Homily by Fr. Mike
Hey, Rita. The building down in Clearwater - You got it free, right? You don't have to pay a dime for it, is that correct? No way, right? No way, it's not correct.
I look out and - what about the houses and homes that you all own. They were all given to you, right? You don't have to pay a dime for them? No way, right?
Are there any cars amongst us? Do any of us own cars? We all got them free, right? Yeah, right.
What about, what about the shoes on your feet? Were they free? I mean, okay, even if they were a gift some Christmas, were they free to the person who gave them to you then?
All things in life, then, are things we have to pay for to get them? I think that our lives kind of teach us that. And I think, sometimes, that idea then spills over into our spirituality, and our concept of faith.
That there's a startling proclamation, a tremendous bit of good news that is given to us today in the Gospel, which of course means Good News.
"Without cost, you have received."
Let's think about that for a second. I want to ask a question. Without cost, you have received. What is it that Jesus is referring to? I think that He is referring to what the disciples have received. They have received the Good News. They have received Christ in their life. They have received salvation.
"Without cost, you have received."
So, this is the question. How much does it cost to get salvation? How much does it cost to be a member of the Church? How much does it cost to receive?
What do you think?
You know, it's interesting. When I have asked a similar question of people who are away from the Church, or people who are struggling being in the Church because of an issue akin to this, these are some of the answers I get.
"Well, the Church wants, well, 10% of everything I make or maybe even more, because they talk about a sacrificial gift. It's too costly." They don't need that. Ever heard someone say that to you before, or heard other people talk about that?
Or here's another one. "You know what? They just want all of my time up there at church. It costs too much to be a member of the Church."
Or if you have people that have incredible talents, you know like builders or plumbers. It's true, they get tapped on a lot. "Hey, do you think you could fix this?" And so they will say, the cost is too much. The cost is too much.
Or here's another one I hear: "The cost for salvation is my life! I gotta give my life! It's too much." Or here's a great gripe I hear: "You know, in order to be a Catholic, in order to be a disciple of Jesus, I gotta give up my freedom. Costs too much!"
But Jesus says, "Without cost, you have received."
It's very important that we ponder these words, and allow them to take deep root in our hearts and in the depths of our souls, and to capture our minds. Because it will transform our lives as God wants them to be transformed.
"Without cost, you have received."
All that we have, all that we are, even the salvation and its completeness that we long for in the glories of heaven, all of it is gift. We have done nothing to merit it, nor is there anything we can do to merit it. It is pure gift given to us. No payment needed. Without cost, we have received.
I'm going to ask you a couple of questions, then. What did you do, how much did you pay for your life, and how much do you continue to pay to have it now? Nothing. It's a gift, a gift from God.
Did you eat today? Will you eat later today? What did you pay, in order for the seed and the animal to grow, which will nourish you? Nothing. You can't do it, God does it. It's a gift from God to us.
Salvation. What did you do to merit salvation?
It's not true, what you're thinking, it's not true. Jesus says, in describing this He says, "You know what, there was a servant. And the servant does exactly what the master wants him to do."
You know what Jesus says about that servant? He's useless. He's useless, he's only done what he's supposed to do. And so when we do what God wants us to do, what are we doing? We're only doing what we're supposed to do! We're not doing anything extra!
When do you normally give someone a merit, a reward? Or as we used to call it when I was working as an engineer, an "Atta boy" or an "Atta girl", "Keep up the good work." Are they not normally given, and indeed, are given when we have done something over and beyond what we're supposed to be doing? That's what merit is about. That's what reward is about.
But when we do what God wants us to do, all we're doing is what we're supposed to be doing, nothing more! We can't go around, "Waaah! Look at me! I did such great things today for God! And now, you know what, God owes me." Wrong, it's not true. We've only done what we're supposed to do.
So we're not useless in the sense of, well you know, we didn't do good. But we're useless in the sense, that we haven't done anything more than we are supposed to do, and need to do.
And so salvation, also, is a wondrous gift from God. "Without cost, you have received." It's been given, and it has been accepted. And all of that, in the giving, and in the accepting, it is done without cost. In the giving and in the accepting, it has been done without cost. What you have received, you have received without cost.
Now think about this along the terms of our human relationships. Think of those people in your life, and I'll think about the people in my life, that really are incredible givers, if you will, in your life - in my life. You know the kind of people I'm talking about. Those people where it's like, wow, if that person wasn't in my life, my life would not be rich, it wouldn't be full. It wouldn't be complete.
And when we think about those people in our lives, what we recognize is they're giving to us and we're receiving those gifts from them, right? It's true, isn't it? And it's not just the matter that they're giving us gifts like material gifts, it's the matter of sharing life, and enriching our life with their presence, most of all. And that's what salvation ultimately is, it's God's presence in our lives.
So when we think about our human relationships, about those people who enrich our lives like that, what is our normal response in those relationships? Don't we want to reciprocate as best we can? Aren't we pulled into the relationship in such a way that we give back, in the way that we can give back, out of gratitude? I think that's what happens, and we do it not expecting anything back. Because we have recognized how incredibly enriched we have been by that person's life, in our lives.
"Without cost, you have received. Without cost you are to give." This, my dear friends, is what stewardship is about in our lives.
Many times we get the proverbial cart before the horse. We think stewardship is about funding projects, like paying for a building in Clearwater. We think that stewardship is about putting in our time, so that the Newsletter gets out. We think stewardship is about using our talents, so the grotto gets built and the plumbing gets put in. That's not what stewardship's about.
Stewardship is a way of living. It's a matter of recognizing that without cost we have received, that everything that we are, we have, everything that we hope to have, is gift from God. And that our God loves us so much, that God will continually, always and forever uphold us and provide for us - through the gift of, yes, material goods, but also through the gift of friends. And most of all through the gift of spiritual goods that are poured into our lives, like this Holy Sacrifice of the Mass - the gift beyond price, so we can't pay for it.
And when we realize, indeed, that without cost we have received, and that means everything, that it moves us to that point of gratitude so we do things out of thanksgiving. We do things to express how much we are grateful to God.
We live our lives in accord to God's Word, according to God's plan, according to the commandments of God - not because we're fearful of condemnation, and not because we're earning our salvation, but because we are grateful to God and we want to live in accord with the God Who loves us and saves us, out of thanksgiving.
And the reason why we reach into our pocketbooks, and give of our time, and give of our talents, is for the same reason - out of gratitude.
And yes, for some of us it takes on another dimension. It's a matter of giving of our time and our lives in such a way, that they are dedicated in a unique way, in religious life and priesthood. But still lived out of thanksgiving to God, Who has given us all that we have, including life and breath, and salvation, as gift.
And so on this day, let us take some time to ponder more deeply, so that our lives might be transformed more completely. Let us then ponder the fact - without cost we have received, so that we might be invigorated to live our faith-lives in every aspect of our living, in a way that without cost, we give.

A Letter from a Cardinal at the Vatican
September 9, 2008
Dear Ms. Ring,
Thank you for your beautiful letter and accompanying material on the Shepherds of Christ. Your invitation that I consider becoming an Associate member was also welcome.
I read with attention the material enclosed. Fr. Edward Carter, S.J., and yourself were specially set aside by the Holy Spirit to pray for those who serve the various ministries of the Church. Your work has given birth to many graces and spiritual fruit. I am certain that your prayer and counsel have saved many priests from an overly pessimistic evaluation of the present state of the presbyterate in the USA.
You began this work in 1993; this was well before the breaking forth of the sexual abuse crisis within the Church in 2002. The strength and consolation that your members are offering to priests through their prayers have been of immense importance in sustaining priests in their ministry.
My own life and ministry have been greatly enhanced through personal membership in a priestly fraternity. It has its own spirituality and goals, some of which would be coincident with those of the Shepherds of Christ. For that reason, I must decline your kind offer to become a formal Associate member of the Shepherds of Christ. However, I will continue to pray for the intentions of your association and deepen my own prayer for the life and ministry of priests in the USA and through the world. Please extend my thanks to John Weickert for the material he sent me.
With best wishes, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Cardinal from the Vatican
Jesus gave to Fr. Carter a mission May 31, 1994 to send the Priestly Newsletter to all the priests in the world.
July 31, 1994
Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.
"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.
"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."
- Message from Jesus to Father Edward J. Carter, S.J., Founder, as given on July 31, 1994,
feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Founder of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits)
We began sending the first Priestly Newsletter
to all the priests in the United States July 31, 1994 -
first issue.Soon we were sending the Newsletter to so
many countries and 75,000 priests in English
and Spanish - edited by Fr. Edward Carter, S.J.
This was sent every other month until
his death December 18, 2000.
The image of Mary appeared on the building
December 17, 1996 and immediately we began
circulating
the prayer manual from Clearwater, Florida
praying for the priests, the Church, and the world.
We have circulated the Priestly Newsletter now
for 15 years in some form yearly -
The
prayers of the prayer manual were
immediately translated in 6 languages, now 8
languages,
with the Church's Imprimatur and we have had
these
prayer chapters - praying for the priests,
the Church and the world for 15 years now.
Our
primary purpose in the Shepherds of Christ is
to circulate the Priestly Newsletter, our co-equal
purpose to begin prayer
chapters praying for the priests, the Church, and
the world.
Fr.
Carter circulated 33 Priestly Newsletters to his
death
December 18, 2000 - about 1/2 of these
were translated in Spanish.
After his death I circulated two 20 page Priestly Newsletters to about 95,000 priests in 2001 with his writing on grace and Fr. Carter's writing about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. (several more Priestly Newsletters)
In 2002 we had compiled 3 years 1996-1999 Priestly Newsletters as Fr. Carter directed before his death into the Priestly Newsletter Book 2 and we circulated it with the prayer manual to 95,000 priests in the world.
We then
continued circulating the
writings of Fr. Carter in the Priestly Newsletter
with the booklet
Fr. Carter's synopsis on the spiritual life in the
Spirituality Handbook he compiled when living and we
sent the prayer manual and Spiritual Bouquets for
their Priestly Ministry.
We then sent a large Newsletter from another Jesuit before and after Pope John Paul II's death to about 85,000 priests and heirarchy.
Jesus told me to go to Fr. Pasquini we circulated 9 Priestly Newsletters and about 250,000 books to 85,000 priests for most of the newsletters in that course of three years selling the properties before the bottom fell out of the real estate.
Next we believe from the stacks of letters from hierarchy about 3 feet high we help to encourage the hierarchy and strengthen the Church by sending this before this latest crisis in the world, in telling them of all of our prayer chapters for 15 years and other prayers.
We then sent Fr. Joe's homilies and Fr. Carter's Priestly Newsletter Book 3 to hierarchy and my Mass Book 2 times, Fr. Pasquini's Ecce Fides book - now sending Fr. Joe's homily Cycle C Book which Cardinal George told us to do, when I sent out the Cycle A of Fr. Joe's book.
We need funds about 75 cents a book postage to send out these homily books to priests.
The building payment where Mary appeared comes due every month on the 19th and is so hard to pay.
I beg for prayers and funds - this book is a big strength to the priests.
A priest in Florida said he used it for his spiritual reading, every Sunday, and it helped his whole parish.
With all the Negative things in this world we carry out the mission Jesus told Fr. Carter to do in this message 15 years ago.
With all the Priestly Newsletters in books, we circulated singularly, and in books, about 15,000,000 Priestly Newsletters in over 15 years.
How do you measure a direction like this given by Jesus to Fr. Carter and all the prayer of the prayers in 8 languages with the Church's Imprimatur.
After Fr. Carter sent 2 and 1/2 years of Newsletters Our Lady appeared on the building in Clearwater, Florida.
We did not obey the Fatima message and there was World War II as Mary said if we did not listen.
Excerpt from The Spirituality of Fatima
by Fr. Edward Carter, S.J.
July 13, 1917
"During her appearance in July, Our Lady, in answer to Lucia's plea, promised that in October she would work a great miracle so that all might believe and know who she was. Again, the Mother of God told the children to sacrifice themselves for sinners and to say many times, especially when making a sacrifice, this prayer: "O my Jesus, I offer this for love of Thee, for the conversion of poor sinners, and in reparation for all the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary." (11)
"During this same July apparition, Mary showed the three children a vision of Hell. She told them:
"You have seen Hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish, in the world, devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If people do what I tell you, many souls will be saved and there will be peace.
"The war (World War I, then raging) is going to end. But if people do not stop offending God, another and worse one will begin in the reign of Pius XI. When you shall see a night illuminated by an unknown light [January 2, 1938], know that this is the great sign that God gives you that He is going to punish the world for its many crimes by means of war, hunger, and persecution of the Church and the Holy Father. (12)
"To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of Reparation on the five first Saturdays. If my requests are granted, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, she will scatter her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be destroyed....
"But in the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph, the Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, Russia will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world." (13)

Please pray with me.
So many babies are killed daily with abortion.
We are immensely offending God.
Help me send these mailings to the priests as Jesus asked Fr. Carter and say the prayers in the prayer manual at 6:20 or when ever you can in your parishes and homes.

Dear Donor,
I give my heart to Jesus and Mary with you in love –
Jesus asked for prayer and support for our mailing to the priests in a message to Fr. Carter in 1994.
We need your help. $1.00 in postage can send Fr. Joe’s book to a priest – Here is a letter from a priest we received last week:
Dear Friends,
Greetings! Last year you sent me the book – Guiding Light: Focusing on the Word. It is a series of homilies by Fr. Joe Robinson. What a wonderful gift. I have used it for all my homilies and spiritual reading. It has been a blessing for me and even more – a blessing for my parish. I am very grateful for this gift.
Sincerely,
A Florida Parish Priest
We love our priests and have dedicated our lives these past 15 years spreading the Priestly Newsletter and praying these prayers in prayer chapters all over the world in 8 languages with the Church’s Imprimatur.
I am Rita Ring, co-founder of the Shepherds of Christ – Fr. Edward Carter, S.J., doctorate the founder – with John Weickert the President and our officers, servants and handmaids of the Good Shepherd, Fr. Carter named. We pray 24 hours a day before the Blessed Sacrament in our church in China, Indiana given to us for a small price by the archdiocese for this purpose 13 years ago. We have Mass 4 days with a retreat in China, Indiana monthly in which we pray and sing the scriptures, follow St. Ignatius’ format and the rosary. A priest comes 4 days for Mass except Sunday. We have had prayers in the China Church where Fr. Carter used to say Mass and expose the Eucharist since 1997. Now we have perpetual adoration praying for you with thanks and love – praying to make reparation for the sins of the human race. We are so very grateful for you and the Church – our lives are centered in thanking God in these prayer chapters.
My brother, Fr. Joseph Robinson, has allowed us to publish again, his homilies, Cycle C – We have received so much thanks from priests who use his books of homilies. He is the dean of the Cathedral Deanery, but we are so thankful to God for Fr. Carter, S.J. and the Jesuits and my brother and Fr. Pasquini and Fr. Mike who helps us since before Fr. Carter died, my cousin Fr. Don McCarthy.
Many wonderful priests say Mass at the China retreat during our days of prayer – the 10th – 13th every month.
And in Florida at the Clearwater building we pray the 2nd to the 5th each month and have been for years. We acquired the Florida building July 5, 1998 and the China Church June, 1997. We have prayed with these prayer chapters now in 8 languages for over 15 years. There is a network of prayer at 6:20 daily for many, many years.
We live to be ever more one in Him, our beloved bridegroom of our soul – We believe there will be an era of peace as Mary promised at Fatima and we spread this devotion to the Two Hearts and our donors help us spread these books to you to help the priests –
We love our priests and the souls and thank God for His gifts – with God’s grace all things are possible – We unite to the Mass – and try to get people (tiny tots to elderly, priests and sisters) praying in their Morning Offering – offering up all they do for you, the Church and the world united to the Mass for great grace to be outpoured.
Thank You,
Sincerely,
Rita Ring, co founder John Weickert,
Shepherds of Christ President
From the Your Inner Child of the Past
"It takes four to make a marriage. If
you work toward understanding and
respecting all four, you will lessen
the differences and misunderstandings
that wreck many marriages. This can
help you find greater harmony within
yourself and within your marriage."
Greatest commandment
Living in Harmony with Yourself
"Mutual respect is the principle
which can help you live in harmony
with yourself. This means that, as
a good parent to yourself, you
respect the feelings of your childhood,
your "inner child of the past." This also
means that you require your "child of
the past" to accept limits which keep
him from infringing on your life as an
adult and on the rights of others."
However, if the feelings from your
childhood are permitted free expression,
they may interfere with your adult life
or the rights of others. To use a broad,
perhaps ridiculous example, if your
"child of the past" doesn't want to
get up in the morning and go to work,
and you indulge this feeling, you are
letting these childhood feelings
interfere with your adult life.
You may lose your job — and be
unable to do the things that you,
the adult, really want to do. In a
similar fashion you may have
trouble limiting your anger
because your temper tantrums were
indulged by your parents. You may
eat too much or 'want what you want
when you want it' regardless of
others because someone indulged
your whims in childhood."
Mysticism and Love
As we previously stated, the mystical process focuses on love. Mysticism entails an evolving realization of how much God loves us, a realization which prompts the mystic to deepen his or her response to this love. Here then, are the aspects of love which increasingly consume the mystic's attention—God's love for us, our love for God, our love for God's creation—including, of course, love of neighbor and love of self. Let us now elaborate upon certain of these aspects of love.
It sounds so obvious to say God loves us; however, to voice this fundamental truth is not the same as allowing it to influence our existence as it should. On the other hand, the more we allow this truth to penetrate into our inner core and more dynamically direct our thinking and acting, the more we allow the words, "God loves us," to become truly life-promoting, and not merely an intellectual assent to an obvious truth. With God's grace, then, we must keep striving for a deeper comprehension of God's love. This love has brought us into existence, has redeemed us, has given us a mission in life. As we give ourselves over to the mystical process, the realization of these truths grips us with an enthusiasm which formerly eluded us. If acted upon, this realization truly transforms us.
God is ever with us. In his desire to take deeper possession of us, he asks us to be more receptive to his presence. God loves us, and he is our supporting rock, the one who will never fail us, the only one who can be our complete fulfillment. We must be determined to allow God in his love for us to be our life, our strength, our source of growth, our happiness. We must say with St. Paul, "What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? . . . No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Rom 8:35-39).
Why are we sometimes afraid of God's love? We can shy away from the white heat of this love, foolishly thinking God will ask too much of us. When has God ever asked anything of us without giving us the grace to accomplish this? When has our heavenly Father ever asked that which has not brought us closer to him and thereby increased our happiness?
The mystics have marvelled at this love of God for his children. Embraced by this love, their fear has diminished and their trust increased. Made secure in this love, they have possessed the courage to undertake the ordinary with uncommon devotion and the heroic with dominant determination. Consumed with this love, they have continually pushed forward to accomplish more for Christ and his kingdom. Transformed by this love, the mystics have said with the most penetrating realization, "I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me" (Gal 2:19-20).
Obviously, we can never fully fathom the depth of God's love for us. We can, however, grow in what will always be a finite comprehension of this awesome reality. Christ has shown us his heart as a constant reminder that we should strive for a greater realization of what it means to say God loves us. The heart of Christ is indeed the symbol of God's fathomless love for us, a love which requests our own response of love.
Some of the mystics have explicitly told us about the treasures found in the heart of Christ. St. Bonaventure, a doctor of the Church, is one of these. In his The Tree Of Life he tells us how the Church and her sacraments have come forth from the heart of Christ: "Then, in order that the Church might be formed out of the side of Christ sleeping on the cross . . . the divine plan permitted that one of the soldiers should pierce open his sacred side with a lance. While blood mixed with water flowed, the price of our salvation was poured forth, which gushing from the secret fountain of the heart gave power to the sacraments of the Church. . . ."1
Christ's heart, then, is a vivid symbol of God's salvific love for us, a love which calls for our own response of love. What does our response include? As Jesus himself has told us, it includes love of God, love of neighbor, love of self. Let us further consider these aspects of Christian love.
Our love for God includes our attachment to him in all his infinite perfections—his goodness, love, mercy, justice, and so forth. Our love for him also includes his will for us as manifested in many different ways. This can be the difficult part of loving God. It is very easy for us to say we love the all-good God, but when God's will shows us how we are to live, we do not always give a ready response in love.
As we strive to love God by fulfilling his will in our lives, Jesus is our example and our inspiration. Christ's life was supremely successful because he perfectly loved his Father's will. In like manner must the life of each of us be judged—this life which is our response of love. At times we tend to judge the value of our lives not by first looking to God's will, but rather by primarily considering whether our work is enjoying success, whether we are being loved and accepted by others, whether we are feeling particularly worthwhile. Let us make ourselves very clearly understood here. We are not saying that an existence which possesses the above qualities cannot be one deeply conformed in love to God's will, and , therefore, a highly successful and valuable life. This, however, is not always the case. Sometimes our lives could possess the above characteristics and yet be considerably lacking in conformity to God's will; and to the extent that God's will does not influence us, our lives lack real value despite all the appearances to the contrary.
We can, on the other hand, be tempted to think our lives are useless, or, even worse, a nuisance to ourselves and others because of what appears to be unsuccessful living. We may presently be feeling the weight of a continual sense of frustration, or we may be experiencing a painful period of being misunderstood by others or having our work go unnoticed, or a particular trial seems to keep nagging at us—and the list could go on and on. Even though the suffering may be cutting very deeply, and our lives seem to lack success and value, we must realize through reflective faith that our own existence in the distressing here and now is greatly worthwhile provided we are reaching out to embrace God's will with love—yes, even though our love at the time may seem so weak, and frustrated, and almost shattered.
One of the greatest mystical teachers, Teresa of Avila, reminds us of the central position this loving conformity to God's will holds in the mystical journey. It is, she says, the key issue for the beginner in the spiritual life as well as for the most advanced: "All that the beginner in prayer has to do—and you must not forget this, for it is very important—is to labour and to be resolute and prepare himself with all possible diligence to bring his will in conformity with the will of God. As I shall say later, you may be quite sure that this comprises the very greatest perfection which can be attained on the spiritual road."2 And, again, ". . . love consists . . . in the firmness of our determination to try to please God in everything."3
If we become aware of the varied manner in which God manifests his will, and if we act upon the realization that our love for God dictates that we assimilate his will, then the seeds of mysticism given at baptism come more and more into bloom. Our lives will continue to rest upon solid ground and not upon sand. We will be implementing the teaching of Jesus: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven" (Mt 7:21).
As we grow in loving conformity to God's will, we increasingly live by the mutual sharing of gifts between God and ourselves. This concept is extremely important for understanding the mystical life. Progress in the mystical life, then, is centered in the increasingly lived realization of this basic fact: as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have in love given themselves to us, together with a created participation in their life (our life of grace), we too make a love gift of ourselves to them. As this process takes deeper hold of us, God increasingly possesses our persons with all their faculties, and more and more is reflected through our persons. We are indeed finite expressions of the infinite God.
St. John of the Cross tells us how this mutual exchange of gifts between God and the Christian reaches its culminating point in the spiritual marriage—mysticism's highest stage: "It now remains for the said Spiritual Marriage to be made between the soul aforementioned and the Son of God. This is without comparison far geater than the Spiritual Bethrothal because it is a total transformation in the Beloved, wherein on either side there is made surrender by total possession of the one to the other with a certain consummation of union of love . . . ."4
Although the spiritual marriage marks the highest exchange between God and the mystic, it is very important to realize that a lesser exchange occurs in the lower realms of the spiritual life. God in his love is always calling the spiritual pilgrim, inviting her or him to receive his greater self-communication, inviting the person to make a greater gift of self to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We have briefly discussed God's love for us and ours for him. As we progress in our treatment of Christian love, we remind ourselves that much of God's will for us pertains to our relationship with our neighbor. Love of God and love of neighbor are, indeed, inseparably linked. St. John, in a well-known Scriptural passage, vividly reminds us of this: "If anyone says, 'I love God,' but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen" (1 Jn 4:20).
The mystical process involves a maturing realization of why John's statement is true. Growth in the mystical journey includes an increased awareness that one is made in God's image. Increased awareness of this regarding oneself gives a proportionate consciousness of one's neighbor as also being in the divine image. To love God, then, necessarily means to love one's neighbor whose existence possess the divine imprint.
Although we must, then, necessarily love all, this does not mean we must like everyone. There is a difference. There are certain personalities which do not appeal to us—we do not like them. We must, however, love them. Furthermore, regarding the wrong actions of anyone, I can and must reject such actions, yet I can and must love the core person who is in God's image.
The contemporary Christian has a special responsibility and privilege as bearer of love for one's neighbor. A Christian of any age certainly has a duty of love towards the human race, but our present-day world has special need of people who deeply love their brothers and sisters within the human family. We live in critical times. Enormous problems confront the human race, and many of these occur because there is insufficient love in the hearts of many. As we sweep our gaze across the world and observe what happens when there is this failure of love, we are aware of the special danger this lack of love produces in contemporary times. We live in a nuclear age. We must counterbalance the awesome threat of holocaust with increased effort to love our fellow human beings. Responding to God's grace, you and I must decide what this means for each of us.
Some today doubtlessly think that to talk of mysticism is to distract us from attending to the overwhelming needs of contemporary society. This attitude is nothing new. There have always been those who have thought that mysticism hinders a practical love and social concern for one's neighbor. Such an attitude is far from the truth. Growth in the authentic mystical process—as opposed to false mysticism—means growth in union with God. Greater union with God, in turn, means a greater capacity to be and to do for one's sisters and brothers. The lives of the mystics are outstanding witnesses to this statement. What they have accomplished for others comprises a remarkable story of loving concern for one's neighbor. They achieved all this, moreover, precisely because of their mysticism. As Dom Cuthbert Butler succinctly observes, ". . . the mystics were what they were, not in spite of their mysticism, but because of it."5 William James, in speaking of one of these mystics, St. Ignatius Loyola, says, "Saint Ignatius was a mystic, but his mysticism made him assuredly one of the most powerfully practical human engines that ever lived."6
We have briefly discussed God's love for us, our love for God, and our love for neighbor. Finally, let us discuss love for oneself. This is an extremely important concept, one that has not always received proper attention throughout the history of Christian spiritual writing and teaching. The situation, happily, is changing today. Indeed, we must love ourselves, since we are in the image of God. As we cooperate with God in developing our Christic, Trinitarian image, we grow in the capacity to see our worth and loveableness. What John of the Cross says concerning the worth and loveableness of one who has achieved the spiritual marriage is proportionately true of those still walking in the lower regions of the spiritual journey: "When, therefore, the soul feels itself very near to going forth to possess its kingdom completely and perfectly, in the abundance wherewith it sees itself enriched (for it knows itself to be pure and rich and full of virtues and prepared for this . . .)."7
We are loveable, then, because God has clothed us with his beauty. Proper self-love, consequently, is a virtue. In love for the self we rejoice at how we have thus far participated through grace in the greatness of God; in love for the self we also determine to develop further this divine image.
True self-love, therefore, is far removed from the narcissistic self-love, the selfish love of self, which is so prevalent in today's culture. Narcissistic love has no concern for God and others. Such love focuses one's attention solely on the selfish interests of a person. It is interested only in the so-called personal fulfillment and satisfaction of the narcissistic individual. Because this falsely conceived fulfillment is based on selfishness, however, real fulfillment for the narcissist is impossible. Narcissistic love of self is really hatred of self, since it is totally opposed to the true good of the individual—life according to God.
Authentic love of self, then, is the love of the true self, the self possessing the Christic, Trinitarian image. This self desires to live according to God's plan. Part of this plan is the same for all human beings—God has a basic will according to which all must live in order to achieve happiness here and hereafter. In addition, God also has a special plan for each individual, since he has created each a unique person.
Love of self, consequently, involves growth in achieving self-identity—achieving an ever greater self-knowledge, an ever greater awareness of who I am as this unique, Christic, individual, an ever greater awareness of what God wants me to do with my life. Love of self also involves acting according to this awareness.
Getting to know myself would seem to be a simple process. After all, do I not consistently live on a very intimate basis with myself? I can tell myself, therefore, that self-knowledge comes with little effort. In fact, it is not all that easy. There are indications that in certain respects I do not know myself nearly as well as I had thought. At times people tell me something about myself of which I was hardly aware, and the number of persons concurring in this observation excludes the probability that they all are in error regarding their assessment. There is also the possibility that I may really think I have the talent for a certain occupation whereas in reality I possess very little potential for it. On the other hand, the talents I actually possess for some other work or profession I may only slightly recognize or recognize not at all. The significant number of people who have actually mistakenly assessed themselves should make me realize that erroneous self-evaluation in some regards is not an unrealistic possibility. To be unaware of the various possibilities of incorrect self-evaluation is to hinder growth in self-knowledge.
We also hinder growth in self-knowledge if we over-identify with the various personalities we assume. In Jungian terminology, these are called various personas or masks we assume in coping with the demands of a necessarily varied existence amid the complex human condition. A Jungian commentator, James Welch, observes regarding the persona, "A persona is a mask, or a number of masks, through which the individual relates to the world around. Masks are means of adaptation to society and a protection for the psyche. A raw psyche, without the mediation of a persona would be a jarring experience for the individual as well as society. . . . I have different masks for different occasions, and, consequently, different views of myself will be highlighted."8 As necessary as the different personas are in the life of an individual, equally necessary is the ability not to equate my total self-identity with the personas. For example, if a person over-identifies with his or her work persona, failure in that work can occasion devastating loss of self-esteem, a sense of worthlessness, and concomitant depression.
Achieving adequate self-knowledge can be both painful and joyful. Coming to the realization that I have this bad trait, or that weakness, can be disturbing, frustrating, or humiliating—especially when others point out these negative characteristics. Growth in self-knowledge, however, can also be encouraging and joy-producing as I realize I can do something about these negative aspects, as I achieve a deeper insight into certain positive qualities or become aware of others that I hardly knew existed. The quest for self-knowledge can, then, be exciting. As I obtain better knowledge of both my limitations and my capabilities, I see interesting possibilities for more advanced Christian living which I have not yet implemented.
Growth in self-identity does not take place in a vacuum—the vacuum of the isolated self. Rather, I achieve self-knowledge through the proper relationship with reality. Through the interaction of myself with various facets of created reality—persons, places, things, happenings—I can come to know much about my strengths and weaknesses, my talents and limitations, my personality and temperament. It is, however, especially through my relationship with God that I grow in achieving self-identity. God, the ultimate source of all knowledge, is, consequently, the ultimate source of self-knowledge. God continually wants to remind me of the fundamental fact concerning myself—that he overwhelmingly loves me and that I am uniquely precious to him. Upon this rock-bottom fact rests all other facets of self-knowledge. Regarding all aspects of knowing myself, God is most anxious to help me grasp these with greater clarity. My task is to allow him to do so. If I open myself to him in prayer, he will continue to reveal himself to me, and also he will reveal myself to me. The more I fathom the mystical depths of my being—the more I allow God to lead me to the center of my being—the more God will tell me about himself and myself, this self which is in his image. Deeper insights concerning himself and myself come to light—and here again we meet up with the hidden aspect of mysticism. The more, in turn, I know of myself under God's guidance, the more I can truly love myself.
The ongoing assimilation of the various dimensions of love which we have been discussing is not without its pain. Some have learned this lesson well, others have not. Indeed, the real tragedy concerning human suffering is not that there is so much of it, but that apparently so much of it is wasted.
There are two basic responses to suffering—one correct, one incorrect. Let us consider a simple example. Two persons have been partially paralyzed because of an accident. One becomes embittered by his fate, and becomes an enclosed-type person, one who refuses to go out in love to God and others. The second person, despite the frustration and disappointment, resolves to strive to continue to grow as a person, and determines to utilize this physical tragedy as a means of becoming a person who loves more deeply.
To grow in love, then, includes the willingness to cope properly with suffering, whatever its kind. Progress in love includes knowing how to use suffering as a means of growth. The mystic has learned this lesson well.
In summarizing this chapter, we can say that our purpose here on earth is to realize in Christ how much God loves us and to respond by loving God, our neighbor, ourselves, and all creation. Christian life, with its highest development occurring in the mystical state, is that simple. Here we speak of simplicity in the sense of unity—a concept marvelously attractive to mystics. The unity of which we speak is that which emanates from the facets of Christian love. This unity is not that which excludes rich variety and numerous possibilities. The more we realize God's love and give our love in return, the more we realize love is an ongoing process that never exhausts all the marvelous and myriad possibilities of its implementation.
Growth in the mystical process, since it both increases our awareness of these splendid truths and allows us to more deeply live them, is, then, an adventurous journey.

8. Invocación a San José.
