                Don't give into leaven
                    of the Pharisees

It is what is in us with
                    a corruptive attitude
                    when we give into
                    sin —

Don't let evil rise in us
                    like yeast in bread

                Let us live our lives
                    with Christ in us —

                A Family of love

The Saints in heaven — the communion of the
                    saints

                Jesus died — Jesus rose

Here is His prayer before the bitter passion

    John 17: 21-23
    The Prayer of Jesus

    May they all be one,
just as, Father, you are in me
       and I am in you,
so that they also may be in us,
so that the world may believe
it was you who sent me.
I have given them the glory
       you gave to me,
that they may be one as we are one.
With me in them and you in me,
may they be so perfected in unity
    that the world will recognise
that it was you who sent me
and that you have loved them
    as you have loved me.

The Church is One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic —

Psalm 51: 3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17

A prayer of contrition

For I am well aware of my offences,
my sin is constantly in mind.
Against you, you alone, I have sinned,
I have done what you see to be wrong,

that you may show your saving justice when you pass sentence,
and your victory may appear when you give judgement,
remember, I was born guilty,
a sinner from the moment of conception.

But you delight in sincerity of heart,
and in secret you teach me wisdom.

Give me back the joy of your salvation,
sustain in me a generous spirit.
I shall teach the wicked your paths,
and sinners will return to you.

Deliver me from bloodshed, God, God of my salvation,
and my tongue will acclaim your saving justice.

Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit,
a broken, contrite heart you never scorn.

                Jesus has come
Jesus invites sinners to change their hearts

Luke 5: 32

I have come to call not the upright but sinners to repentance.'

Psalm 95: 8

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah,
as at the time of Massah in the desert,

Psalm 130: 5, 7

I rely, my whole being relies,
    Yahweh, on your promise.

    let Israel hope in Yahweh.

For with Yahweh is faithful love,
    with him generous ransom;

Ezekiel 18: 31

Shake off all the crimes you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why die, House of Israel?

Ezekiel 33: 11

Say to them, "As I live — declares the Lord Yahweh — I do not take pleasure in the death of the wicked but in the conversion of the wicked who changes his ways and saves his life. Repent, turn back from your evil ways. Why die, House of Israel?"

Joel 2: 12-13

'But now — declares Yahweh —
come back to me with all your heart,
fasting, weeping, mourning.'
Tear your hearts and not your clothes,
and come back to Yahweh your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger, rich in faithful love,
and he relents about inflicting disaster.

                God forgive our sins.

                Today's readings

James 1: 12-18

Blessed is anyone who perseveres when trials come. Such a person is of proven worth and will win the prize of life, the crown that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Never, when you are being put to the test, say, 'God is tempting me'; God cannot be tempted by evil, and he does not put anybody to the test. Everyone is put to the test by being attracted and seduced by that person's own wrong desire. Then the desire conceives and gives birth to sin, and when sin reaches full growth, it gives birth to death.

Make no mistake about this, my dear brothers: all that is good, all that is perfect, is given us from above; it comes down from the Father of all light; with him there is no such thing as alteration, no shadow caused by change.

By his own choice he gave birth to us by the message of the truth so that we should be a sort of first-fruits of all his creation.

Psalm 94: 12-13, 14-15, 18-19

How blessed are those you instruct, Yahweh,
whom you teach by means of your law,
to give them respite in evil times,
till a pit is dug for the wicked.

Yahweh will not abandon his people,
he will not desert his heritage;
for judgement will again become saving justice,
and in its wake all upright hearts will follow.

I need only say, 'I am slipping,'
for your faithful love, Yahweh, to support me;
however great the anxiety of my heart,
your consolations soothe me.

Mark 8: 14-21

The disciples had forgotten to take any bread and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. Then he gave them this warning, 'Keep your eyes open; look out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.' And they said to one another, 'It is because we have no bread.' And Jesus knew it, and he said to them, 'Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not understand, still not realise? Are your minds closed? Have you eyes and do not see, ears and do not hear? Or do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you collect?' They answered, 'Twelve.' 'And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you collect?' And they answered, 'Seven.' Then he said to them, 'Do you still not realise?'

God wants us to love each other —

                That is His teaching

Leviticus 19: 1-2, 11-18

Moral and religious regulations

Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
‘Speak to the whole community of Israelites and say:
"Be holy, for I, Yahweh your God, am holy.

You will not steal, nor deal deceitfully or fraudulently with your fellow–citizen. You will not swear by my name with intent to deceive and thus profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh. You will not exploit or rob your fellow. You will not keep back the labourer’s wage until next morning. You will not curse the dumb or put an obstacle in the way of the blind, but will fear your God. I am Yahweh.

"You will not be unjust in administering justice. You will neither be partial to the poor nor overawed by the great, but will administer justice to your fellow–citizen justly. You will not go about slandering your own family, nor will you put your neighbour’s life in jeopardy. I am Yahweh. You will not harbour hatred for your brother. You will reprove your fellow–countryman firmly and thus avoid burdening yourself with a sin. You will not exact vengeance on, or bear any sort of grudge against, the members of your race, but will love your neighbour as yourself. I am Yahweh.

Psalm 19: 8-14

The precepts of Yahweh are honest,
    joy for the heart;
the commandment of Yahweh is pure,
    light for the eyes.

The fear of Yahweh is pure,
    lasting for ever;
the judgements of Yahweh are true,
    upright, every one,

more desirable than gold,
    even than the finest gold;
his words are sweeter than honey,
    that drips from the comb.

Thus your servant is formed by them;
    observing them brings great reward.
But who can detect his own failings?
    Wash away my hidden faults.

And from pride preserve your servant,
never let it be my master.
So shall I be above reproach,
    free from grave sin.

May the words of my mouth always find favour,
and the whispering of my heart,
in your presence, Yahweh,
    my rock, my redeemer.

Matthew 25: 31-46

The Last Judgement

‘When the Son of man comes in his glory, escorted by all the angels, then he will take his seat on his throne of glory. All nations will be assembled before him and he will separate people one from another as the shepherd separates sheep from goats. He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right hand, "Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take as your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you made me welcome, lacking clothes and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me." Then the upright will say to him in reply, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you? When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you?" And the King will answer, "In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me." Then he will say to those on his left hand, "Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you never gave me food, I was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink, I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, lacking clothes and you never clothed me, sick and in prison and you never visited me." Then it will be their turn to ask, "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or lacking clothes, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?" Then he will answer, "In truth I tell you, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me." And they will go away to eternal punishment, and the upright to eternal life.’

Jesus says: Do not be hard hearted

                R. What we do to our brothers we do to Jesus —

Pray with all your heart —

 Our Father

"Our Father, Who art in heaven hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen."

Every knee must bend at the Name of Jesus —

Christ was obedient to His death —

                Judas betrayed Jesus —
                Judas talked behind Jesus' back
Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss —

The degree of premeditation in the heart of a sin is to be
                    considered

                Jesus loved Judas
                Jesus loves the sinners —

Jesus suffered so much for the ones who would continue
sinning and lose their souls —

Can you imagine — giving and giving love and because
of pride and evil growing in the heart like
yeast — the person refused the love Jesus wanted
                    to give them

Jesus died for our sins —
                Jesus wants us holy —

When we deny Jesus, we hurt ourselves —
What we do unloving to others — Jesus says we do to Him

Commitment to spread the Good News

The devil wants us to block the work Jesus wants to do
                    in us

Oh God hear our prayer — Help us to do what you asked
us to in the Shepherds of Christ — to spread these
homilies of Fr. Joe to all the priests in the United
States and to pray all over the world
in 8 languages the prayers you gave Fr. Ed —
What a gift God gave to us in these prayers —
People who pray them are so blessed —

Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:

"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.

"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.

"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."

- Message from Jesus to Father Edward J. Carter, S.J., Founder, as given on July 31, 1994,
feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Founder of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits)

Jesus was beaten and put to death for His love and teachings
But Jesus did it for love of us —

I asked Him with all the abortions why don't you do something
to the world to get them to take notice

He said, you are praying, you are good, you love me, you aren't
aborting babies — He wants our commitment —
our faithfulness — He loves us so much He died for
us — He wants us faithful to Him

                Having faith is believing —
Jesus says in the scriptures — you want signs —
                Jesus wants faith

Look at the Thomas scripture after the resurrection —
                Jesus wants us faith-filled
Jesus wants us full of hope

                Witnesses of hope —

                Jesus wants us loving —
We are commanded to love God and others —
When we are unloving to others, He says, we do it to Him
Oh God I have not rebelled against You and have given

myself to Your service — Help us Lord — Help us do
the work You call us to —

God sent His own Son for love of us —

Oh God have mercy on us, we want to help make reparation
for these sins — Oh God forgive us — renew our strength
                    our strength is in You

Jesus who is the authority was threatened by those questioning
Him — The crowd chose Barabbas over Jesus —

Oh God let us not give into public opinion, but keep our
                    eyes on You

                Oh God hear our prayer
Help us to be holy — not rebellious —

Let the morning shine on us — that our souls are pure —
white as snow — let us not give into inequity — Oh Savior
My God — My refuge is in You

Day and Night I live to please You — hour by hour - moment
by moment — greater union in You —

A surprise, oh My God — life is full of trials and in these
trials we are brought closer to You —

Look at the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous that helped so
many to not despair like Judas, but changed
their lives with the help of God

The Twelve Steps of AA

Here are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery:

                    1.  We admitted we were powerless over alcohol,
that our lives had become unmanageable.

                    2.  Came to believe that a Power greater than
ourselves could restore us to sanity.

                    3.  Made a decision to turn our will and our lives
over to the care of God as we understood Him.

                    4.  Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

                    5.  Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human
being the exact nature of our wrongs.

                    6.  Were entirely ready to have God remove all
                            these defects of character.

                    7.  Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

                    8.  Made a list of all persons we had harmed,
and became willing to make amends to them all.

                    9.  Made direct amends to such people wherever possible,
except when to do so would injure them or others.

                    10.  Continued to take personal inventory and when we
                            were wrong promptly admitted it.

                    11.  Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our
conscious contact with God as we understood Him,
praying only for knowledge of His will for us and
the power to carry that out.

                    12.  Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps,
we tried to carry this message to alcoholics,
and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Life is for greater purity in Him —
Life is for being like Jesus — more and more in His
                    image and likeness —

Life is in following in the footsteps of Jesus

Oh God the darkness crouches in and in the light of You
dwelling in my heart, I am not overcome —

Jesus says, I am the way, the truth and the life —
I am the Light of the World —

                R. In You Oh Lord I find rest — Let me not be put to
shame but have greater life in You

Let every knee bend to our Savior
Let the mountains clap with joy —
Let the birds sing of His glory —
                Let night turn into day
Let day be brighter than ever before

Let our hearts be contrite and truthful — not giving
into satan — for an evil heart is like yeast
                    in the flour

Jesus: Where light was called — the wicked clutches his
darkness, fondles it like a treasure and is
led to a dung heap pile — not the top of
the mountain — not to the well filled with pure water
Why do you labor for darkness —
Do you not see that the yeast grows larger and
So the stone hearts grow darker, like pillars of salt

Your refuge is found in Me
Your light is only found in Me —

You, who disobey and rebel, curse the light and give way
to the darkness, rebelling against a loving God —

Oh pity for you — you who turn your backs to My peace

It is clear to many — My way — they lie and say "Oh I didn't
know" When they knew very well —
Deception may cause others grief, but I read the
heart, I know your darkness, I know your
ways and your deception — not hidden from Me —

Your God — Creator of all,
Oh little lost one — be not the sheep falling over the hill
into the pit — follow the Good Shepherd — lest
you fall and never return —

Oh I shed My Blood for love of you —

I called you and in your pride — you rejected Me —

                Light —— Darkness
                Life ——— Death

                You have a free will

                    Holy —— Rebelling

                Your soul is at stake

You were called to be My apostle — a child of light —
                    not giving into darkness

And I called to you and I prodded you and I called your name
I knocked on your door —

And you said "Go away Jesus, I want my will I have a life
going on here and I don't need to be under anyone"

They did not recognize My authority those who interrogated
Me and put Me to death —
They led Me off like an innocent lamb led to
                    the slaughter and
I did this, was put to death for you, My beloved —
I died for your sins —
                    Sins of pride —
Sins of seeing yourself above others —
Sins of refusing to really love Me and meditate
on your own sins instead of persecuting
others — I was whipped for this —

                R. Oh Jesus, My Savior, Your love is unending, Your kiss —
the kiss of sweetness and obedience to God's will
to love God above all things —
to love others as Yourself —

Oh Jesus, My Savior, Your love is unending, Your kiss
the kiss of sweetness and obedience to God's will
to love God above all things —
to love others as Yourself —

Jesus: Let your heart not be troubled, be about My work
for what they do to you — they do to Me —
and I call them in love to be instruments
of love — Love Apostles of My Sacred Heart

Why be a rival to the will of God —
Seek God's will and do it with all your heart —
Do not rebel against Me —
                    I am your God —
I speak to you out of love for you —

                R. Jesus sweat blood at the Mount of Olives for our sins
Imagine sweating blood and doing all Jesus did for love
and then seeing the hard hearts unloving and
                    hateful ways —

Create in me, oh God, a clean heart — help me
                    to love as You desire

Jesus had enemies — when they saw His miracles
they put Him to death —

A prophet is without honor in His own land —

They hated Jeremiah — they put him through so much
for delivering God's word to the King —

                Hear my prayer God and
Let my cry come unto Thee
                I am Your servant
                I love You

July 31, 1994
