Today's Readings
Hebrews 3: 7-14
That is why, as the Holy Spirit says:
If only you would listen to him today!
Do not harden your hearts,
as at the rebellion,
as at the time of testing in the desert,
when your ancestors challenged me,
and put me to the test,
and saw what I could do
for forty years.That was why
that generation sickened me
and I said, ‘Always fickle hearts,
that cannot grasp my ways!’
And then in my anger I swore
that they would never enter my place of rest.Take care, brothers, that none of you ever has a wicked heart, so unbelieving as to turn away from the living God. Every day, as long as this today lasts, keep encouraging one another so that none of you is hardened by the lure of sin, because we have been granted a share with Christ only if we keep the grasp of our first confidence firm to the end.
Mark 1:40-45
A man suffering from a virulent skin-disease came to him and pleaded on his knees saying, 'If you are willing, you can cleanse me.' Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, 'I am willing. Be cleansed.' And at once the skin-disease left him and he was cleansed. And at once Jesus sternly sent him away and said to him, 'Mind you tell no one anything, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your cleansing prescribed by Moses as evidence to them.' The man went away, but started freely proclaiming and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but stayed outside in deserted places. Even so, people from all around kept coming to him.
Sing: If Today You Hear His Voice
Hebrews 4: 1-5, 11
Let us beware, then: since the promise never lapses, none of you must think that he has come too late for the promise of entering his place of rest. We received the gospel exactly as they did; but hearing the message did them no good because they did not share the faith of those who did listen. We, however, who have faith, are entering a place of rest, as in the text: And then in my anger I swore that they would never enter my place of rest. Now God's work was all finished at the beginning of the world; as one text says, referring to the seventh day: And God rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing. And, again, the passage above says: They will never reach my place of rest.
Let us, then, press forward to enter this place of rest, or some of you might copy this example of refusal to believe and be lost.
R. Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden
as long as they obeyed God.
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God – they were
cast from the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 17: 7
And I shall maintain my covenant between myself and you, and your descendants after you, generation after generation, as a covenant in perpetuity, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
Mark 10: 43-45
Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of man himself came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’
Hebrews 12: 2
Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection: for the sake of the joy which lay ahead of him, he endured the cross, disregarding the shame of it, and has taken his seat at the right of God’s throne.
R. God created an orderly world –
Adam and Eve sinned and disorder
entered the world –
Eve wanted to be equal to God –
this was disorder.
The devil attacks through a person
that uses disorder to do the
devil's work –
Eve sinned in disorder raising herself
above God – The devil works through
a person operating in disorder
against God –
Excerpt of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, by Louis J. Puhl, S.J. P.60-61
136. THE FOURTH DAY
A MEDITATION ON TWO STANDARDS
The one of Christ, our supreme leader and lord,
the other of Lucifer, the deadly enemy of our
human naturePRAYER. The usual preparatory prayer.
window at a former Jesuit Seminary
137. FIRST PRELUDE. This is the history. Here it will be that Christ calls and wants all beneath His standard, and Lucifer, on the other hand, wants all under his.
138. SECOND PRELUDE. This is a mental representation of the place. It will be here to see a great plain, comprising the whole region about Jerusalem, where the sovereign Commander-in-Chief of all the good is Christ our Lord; and another plain about the region of Babylon, where the chief of the enemy is Lucifer.
139. THIRD PRELUDE. This is to ask for what I desire. Here it will be to ask for a knowledge of the deceits of the rebel chief and help to guard myself against them; and also to ask for a knowledge of the true life exemplified in the sovereign and true Commander, and the grace to imitate Him.
FIRST PART
THE STANDARD OF SATAN
140. FIRST POINT. Imagine you see the chief of all the enemy in the vast plain about Babylon, seated on a great throne of fire and smoke, his appearance inspiring horror and terror.
141. SECOND POINT. Consider how he summons innumerable demons, and scatters them, some to one city and some to another, throughout the whole world, so that no province, no place, no state of life, no individual is overlooked.
142. THIRD POINT. Consider the address he makes to them, how he goads them on to lay snares for men and bind them with chains. First they are to tempt them to covet riches (as Satan himself is accustomed to do in most cases) that they may the more easily attain the empty honors of this world, and then come to overweening pride.
The first step, then, will be riches, the second honor, the third pride. From these three steps the evil one leads to all other vices.
SECOND PART
THE STANDARD OF CHRIST
143. In a similar way, we are to picture to ourselves the sovereign and true Commander, Christ our Lord.
144. FIRST POINT. Consider Christ our Lord, standing in a lowly place in a great plain about the region of Jerusalem, His appearance beautiful and attractive.
145. SECOND POINT. Consider how the Lord of all the world chooses so many persons, apostles, disciples, etc., and sends them throughout the whole world to spread His sacred doctrine among all men, no matter what their state or condition.
146. THIRD POINT. . . .
end of excerpt
R. The devil is real. The evil spirits
work and tempt people.
To not believe the devil is real
is to not guard against him.
Satan wants disorder – he can
tempt people to do the
disordered thing so he can
work through them.
For example – every one is getting
along in unity and the devil
can tempt a person who is prone to tricks,
passive-aggressive means of control –
the devil tempts them to do something
that will cause disorder, chaos,
division and make something essential
that needs to work and be predictable
fall through. The devil can work
in sins of omission where a person
can bring down the house, make
a house go into foreclosure by not
paying the bill and not telling anyone
who lives in the house.
The devil uses people to bring disorder
and start a chain of events where
he sees his evil design unfold
among other well-meaning people
working together.
This is not right reasoning
based on what God wants, what
the Holy Spirit would counsel a person
to do.
The devil wants those he uses to
lay snares and provide chains
so that those doing God's will
are caught in the evil design of
one operating for satan. It can
be because of power, control,
being over others, jealousy,
envy, a person lays a snare for
the just man they are jealous of.
Satan wants to lure those he can
use to being accustomed to secrets
and surprise. A snare is used
to deceive another person – it
is a deception – to set a trap,
play a game, bind a person
who is trying to work to build the
Kingdom of God.
They can give into satan in the abuse
cycle they use on their victim –
moving ahead by provoking, like
hammering a nail – one deception
and trick to the next – one by one –
to reach a climax and try a just
man's patience to get a rise,
to hurt and punish others.
This becomes darker and darker
evil-rooted in deception and pride
and temptation from satan to snare
movements of love of God, love
of others, love of building God's
Kingdom.
Satan wants to bring down
the house and take souls deeper
and deeper into darkness, he
uses pride and anger, jealousy,
envy, the deadly sins.
These vices can become like
chains, the more a person gives
into pride, anger, deception,
secrets for power – the easier
it is for satan to use them
for his evil designs.
Satan uses disorder. Disrespect
for authority, ways of forcing
abuse if one uses power as
a snare and deception to bind
others. Disordered behavior
a person gives into becomes
habits and vices that may
be hard to break, because
satan doesn't want to stop
tempting an instrument he
is operating through. If a person
tries to sweep the house clean
he can bring 7 more devils to
do the work of disorder he wants
pressing harder and harder on
them. A person may be so controlled
by power and pride and anger
satan can easily tempt them
and they give in. They can become
more and more enslaved to satan
as they give in.
We can see how satan used
abortion to put it into law –
working more and more to try
to take an older and older
baby in the womb in abortion.
There are more and more ways to
abort a baby –
Lucifer uses money, honor and
power and also pride!
Satan is the enemy of Jesus Christ.
With religious satan strongly
works on pride and power,
control. A religious is deeply
led astray by failing to obey
their superiors, the religious can become
interiorly rebellious, competitive
and trying to discredit the
authority, the institution in
front of the community. Putting
up chains so most things
will be blocked through
ways they master in deception
to not be found out. Eventually
if this grows the devil becomes
more and more aggressive in the
individual or individuals to try
to force their sordid control over
the place. The devil is cunning,
is secretive and wants to ruin
any institution promoting deep
love of Jesus Christ, the Eucharist,
the Church, religious life,
prayer, etc.
Being rebellious and disobedient
of a religious to their superiors
leads to greater and greater pride
the devil works through and
the heart of the religious
becomes almost chained in their
hardness – rebelling against
that which they are to obey,
support and give good
example before other religious.
It becomes a greater challenge for
them to be docile, loving and
united because of their own
interior rebellion to authority
which is to be obeyed. The pride
becomes more and more stubborn
and there is a chain with satan
working hard in their stubborn
rebellion.
A person in religious life takes a
commitment of Spousal Union with Jesus.
They are under authority and under a
superior who they are to obey – not
argue, not challenge, not discredit
by pulling tricks, snares, so things
the head is trying to accomplish can
be sabotaged by a passive - aggressive
religious under them – using omission
and disguised ways to block the way
their sabotaging efforts are manipulated
by the religious giving into satan's snares.
A religious that is rebelliously disobedient
is in their stubborn rebellious
attitude not being faithful to his
commitment as the Spouse of Christ.
Does he see how he is betraying his marriage
to Jesus by rebelling in disorder
before other religious and trying to
argue, discredit, secretly act in disorder
against events planned for Feast Days,
Retreats, Dinner, Community Gatherings.
A religious may wear an angry face to
show everyone the injustice they
feel has been done to them, how
they have suffered, how they are
wronged and they do not even
see the rebellion on their part to live
as the Spouse of Jesus and give a
good witness before others of their joy
to be called by Christ to such a
vocation. How much negative energy
they have to challenge, discredit,
disobey and no energy for love for
the ring, veil or habit or crucifix
they wear to say they are the Spouse of Jesus.
Some religious give into attractions
with the opposite sex with little
regard how such actions will hurt
the order –
The devil can work in any illegitimate
sexual passions with others a religious
gives into. The devil will try to bring
a religious down to hurt others in
the community, hurt the order,
rebel in pride against authority –
illicit sexual actions that take
a person from their vocation –
When dealing with others the devil can
work in religious life to try to make them
too close or divide. A healthy
relationship is one in which there
is respect, order, obedience, love
for one another, as community love
of brothers and sisters, being with
others, working with others in
productivity and peace. Being together
at meals, functions, road trips
and being united in fun and prayers
and trips made together for a purpose.
Satan is the enemy of God –
satan works in concupiscence to
try to use a religious as his instrument
in a holy institution.
God calls religious to specific duties –
a religious can use sins of omission to
sabotage the work needed for a particular
feast – a religious can use disorder
to take out whatever needs to happen –
If a religious is under authority and God
calls them to that vocation to be the
Spouse of Jesus – it is the way
in which they are to live for the
salvation of their soul – to do it
the best way to please God.
Making a commitment to God as
a religious is serious business. Religious
take the promise or vow of obedience
to a superior. It is their duty to obey
their superior – to give this example
to other religious under them in the
community. It takes prudence
to do duties in the right way –
not hurriedly and in the wrong way –
not holding out and making
someone beg and cry while they
try to provoke authority passively and
in fact are attacking so the
job is not done. A person that has
a serious relationship with Jesus
as their Spouse does not want to
offend Him, but like Mary wants
to do the will of God in love.
God wants to lead the religious
especially into a deeper supernatural life..
The devil wants a religious to get
selfish, be an instrument of
disorder for him in the community.
A religious needs a strong prayer life.
Prayer for Union with Jesus
Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul. Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.
I am Yours to possess. I am Yours to use. I want to be selfless and only exist in You. Help me to spoon out all that is me and be an empty vessel ready to be filled by You. Help me to die to myself and live only for You. Use me as You will. Let me never draw my attention back to myself. I only want to operate as You do, dwelling within me.
I am Yours, Lord. I want to have my life in You. I want to do the will of the Father. Give me the strength to put aside the world and let You operate my very being. Help me to act as You desire. Strengthen me against the distractions of the devil to take me from Your work.
When I worry, I have taken my focus off of You and placed it on myself. Help me not to give in to the promptings of others to change what in my heart You are making very clear to me. I worship You, I adore You and I love You. Come and dwell in me now.
-God's Blue Book, January 17, 1994
A Prayer for Intimacy with the Lamb, the Bridegroom of the Soul
Oh Lamb of God, Who take away the sins of the world, come and act on my soul most intimately. I surrender myself, as I ask for the grace to let go, to just be as I exist in You and You act most intimately on my soul. You are the Initiator. I am the soul waiting Your favors as You act in me. I love You. I adore You. I worship You. Come and possess my soul with Your Divine Grace, as I experience You most intimately.
R. A person who wants to be close to God
cannot live in deception and lies,
secrets to trick people in the
community in passive sneaky
ways.
A religious must seek to be truthful
in all he does - always.
Jesus is the way, the truth and
the life – God is Absolute Truth.
The devil is the father of lies!!
What counts in our lives is how we
grow in our love relationship
with God and others and
know ourselves and die to impurities.
God wants men to spread the Good News
and be witnesses before
men – how much more is
a religious to have zeal and
love for their vocation and Order,
love for their sisters and brothers
in the order.
Satan works on a man's feelings,
sadness, "Oh I can't do that" –
"Oh I didn't have time", "Oh
I didn't know, when a person
just did not do it"
We want to do God's will – not listen
to discouraging, angry, defeatist
feelings, sadness, pessimism,
negativism etc. –
God has called us to our vocation to
love Him, to serve Him and as
a means for us to attain our
eternal salvation.
Satan is the Master of disorder!
God wants us to have fervor
for our relationship of love
with Him – commitment –
sacrifice – doing whatever
it takes and not being spiritually
lazy! Satan wants disorder in
our spiritual life. Religious
need a program, a rigorous
religious program, Mass, retreats,
prayer before the Blessed Sacrament,
Confession. In our life – the Blue Books
and the way of life Jesus gave us,
the prayers, Mass, Adoration,
Morning Offering, Rosary etc. –
The devil wants men that are
religious to be detached from their
relationship with Christ so Jesus
gave us this prayer –
Prayer for Union with Jesus
Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul. Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.
I am Yours to possess. I am Yours to use. I want to be selfless and only exist in You. Help me to spoon out all that is me and be an empty vessel ready to be filled by You. Help me to die to myself and live only for You. Use me as You will. Let me never draw my attention back to myself. I only want to operate as You do, dwelling within me.

R. Satan wants to block the interior
life of Christ with religious. Satan wants
religious busy with matters, other people –
ignore their religious life!
Their Spousal Union with Jesus.
This is a message from Jesus to Fr. Carter.
From Tell My People by Fr. Edward J. Carter, S.J.
Jesus: "My beloved friend, tell My people to pray daily to the Holy Spirit. They are to pray for an increase in His gifts. My people must realize that the Holy Spirit comes to transform them. The Spirit desires to transform you more and more according to My image. Those who are docile to His touch become increasingly shaped in My likeness. He performs this marvel within Mary's Immaculate Heart. The more one dwells in My Mother's Heart, the more active are the workings of the Spirit. The Spirit leads Mary to place you within My own Heart. In both Our Hearts, then, your transformation continues. The more you are formed after My own Heart, the more I lead you to the bosom of My Father. Tell My people all this. Tell them to pray daily for a greater appreciation of these wondrous gifts. I am Lord and Master. All who come to My Heart will be on fire to receive the gifts of the Spirit in ever greater measure! I love and bless My people!"
Reflection: The Holy Spirit is given to us to fashion us ever more according to the likeness of Jesus. And the more we are like Jesus, the more Jesus leads us to the Father. Do we, each day, pray to the Holy Spirit to be more open to His transforming influence? Do we strive each day to grow in union with Mary? The greater our union with our Mother, the spouse of the Holy Spirit, the greater is the transforming action of the Holy Spirit within us.

Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.
"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.
"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."
- Message from Jesus to Father Edward J. Carter, S.J., Founder, as given on July 31, 1994,
feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Founder of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits)
Act of consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
and the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Lord Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock, I consecrate myself to Your most Sacred Heart. From Your pierced Heart the Church was born, the Church You have called me, as a member of Shepherds of Christ Associates, to serve in a most special way. You reveal Your Heart as a symbol of Your love in all its aspects, including Your most special love for me, whom You have chosen as Your companion in this most important work. Help me to always love You in return. Help me to give myself entirely to You. Help me always to pour out my life in love of God and neighbor! Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You!
Dear Blessed Virgin Mary, I consecrate myself to your maternal and Immaculate Heart, this Heart which is symbol of your life of love. You are the Mother of my Savior. You are also my Mother. You love me with a most special love as a member of Shepherds of Christ Associates, a movement created by your Son as a powerful instrument for the renewal of the Church and the world. In a return of love, I give myself entirely to your motherly love and protection. You followed Jesus perfectly. You are His first and perfect disciple. Teach me to imitate you in the putting on of Christ. Be my motherly intercessor so that, through your Immaculate Heart, I may be guided to an ever closer union with the pierced Heart of Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock.

7 levels of commitment of the Shepherds of Christ
There are Associates who gather and pray at least once monthly as a group and also help with donations to support the Shepherds of Christ priestly newsletter. They can be tremendously involved. They give as they feel they are able.
Apostles are members who have restricted their apostolic activity to the Shepherds of Christ. They literally act as a body of lay people who have given their lives in their present living situation to do all that they can to bring about the Reign of the Sacred Heart and triumph of Mary's Immaculate Heart.
Prayer Apostles are often shut-ins, some are able to go to church and pray. They spend much of their lives praying for the Movement.
Apostles of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus are those who spend at least two separate hours weekly before the Blessed Sacrament praying for the following:
For the spread of the devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary culminating in the reign of the Sacred Heart and the triumph of the Immaculate Heart.
For the Pope.
For all bishops of the world.
For all priests.
For all sisters and brothers in the religious life.
For all members of the Shepherds of Christ Movement, and for the spread of this Movement to the world.
For all members of the Catholic Church.
For all members of the human family.
For all souls in purgatory.
In that hour before the Eucharist they spend part of the time praying the Shepherds of Christ prayers and the rosary. The time can be spent with spouse or others, but most spend the time alone before the Eucharist.
Handmaids of the Good Shepherd are young and older women who have given their lives in community primarily to pray for the Shepherds of Christ Movement and intentions and to be special spouses of Jesus. Some have more duties than others. All have the primary duty of prayer and the desire to be a special spouse of Our Lord. One of the functions of the handmaids is their involvement in praying for and helping to circulate the priestly newsletter. The handmaids are not members of a religious order.
Servants of the Good Shepherd are men who live in community with a lifestyle and purpose similar to that of the handmaids. The servants are not members of a religious order.
We wish to form a special congregation of priests who will realize their great oneness with Christ. They will be consecrated deeply to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and support the Shepherds of Christ Movement as holy priests.

Guiding Light homily series — Reflect on the Word — Cycle B The Word leaves an impression on our souls. In my thoughts and reflections are born a more tangible understanding of these eternal concepts presented in the Gospels and the readings. Anyone can read a sentence, but not anyone can absorb it's true meaning. Truth, in this day and age, is almost a matter of opinion or individual entitlement. We believe that Christ's truth is our Roman Catholic Church. We, as priests, champion it's teachings; we are ambassadors for the Pope and Christ to those faces looking at us. We are the light by which our congregation reads to reflect upon real truth and we do it hand in hand. $15 |
Guiding Light homily series — Steadfast to the Son — Cycle A The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15 |
Guiding Light — Focusing on the Word — Cycle B At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15 |
Guiding Light — Feed My Soul — Cycle C In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15 |
Guiding Light — The Word Alive in Our Hearts. — Cycle A (partial) Homilies by the Reverend Joe Robinson given at St. Boniface Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a tremendous honor Fr. Joe has allowed us to share these great gifts with you – for greater holiness and knowing more and more about God. $10 |

Priestly Newsletter — 2000 #1 — CD. — Christ is Our Strength — Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. It is so beautiful. "This brief passage contains one of the greatest lessons of the spiritual life. As we progress along our spiritual journey, we become increasingly aware of how weak we are in our—selves, but how strong we are in Christ. To experience our weakness involves suffering. The degree and kind of suffering can vary. The suffering can include the experience of the classical dark night of the spirit as described by St. John of the Cross. One of the main purposes of the dark night is to make a person keenly aware of his or her helplessness without God." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10 |
