Now, the boy Samuel was serving Yahweh in the presence of Eli; in those days it was rare for Yahweh to speak; visions were uncommon. One day, it happened that Eli was lying down in his room. His eyes were beginning to grow dim; he could no longer see. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying in Yahweh’s sanctuary, where the ark of God was, when Yahweh called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ He answered, ‘Here I am,’ and, running to Eli, he said, ‘Here I am, as you called me.’ Eli said, ‘I did not call. Go back and lie down.’ So he went and lay down. And again Yahweh called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ He got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am, as you called me.’ He replied, ‘I did not call, my son; go back and lie down.’ As yet, Samuel had no knowledge of Yahweh and the word of Yahweh had not yet been revealed to him. Again Yahweh called, the third time. He got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am, as you called me.’ Eli then understood that Yahweh was calling the child, and he said to Samuel, ‘Go and lie down, and if someone calls say, "Speak, Yahweh; for your servant is listening." ’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
Yahweh then came and stood by, calling as he had done before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Samuel answered, ‘Speak, Yahweh; for your servant is listening.’
Samuel grew up. Yahweh was with him and did not let a single word fall to the ground of all that he had told him. All Israel knew, from Dan to Beersheba, that Samuel was attested as a prophet of Yahweh.

And at once on leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed and feverish, and at once they told him about her. He went in to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to serve them.
That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were sick with diseases of one kind or another; he also drove out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.
In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place and prayed there. Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, 'Everybody is looking for you.' He answered, 'Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can proclaim the message there too, because that is why I came.' And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out devils.

In trying to live according to God's will —

Those that give into satan — having this chaos —

The evil one wants us to have this confusion —

136. THE FOURTH DAY
A MEDITATION ON TWO STANDARDS
The one of Christ, our supreme leader and lord,
the other of Lucifer, the deadly enemy of our
human naturePRAYER. The usual preparatory prayer.

137. FIRST PRELUDE. This is the history. Here it will be that Christ calls and wants all beneath His standard, and Lucifer, on the other hand, wants all under his.
138. SECOND PRELUDE. This is a mental representation of the place. It will be here to see a great plain, comprising the whole region about Jerusalem, where the sovereign Commander-in-Chief of all the good is Christ our Lord; and another plain about the region of Babylon, where the chief of the enemy is Lucifer.
139. THIRD PRELUDE. This is to ask for what I desire. Here it will be to ask for a knowledge of the deceits of the rebel chief and help to guard myself against them; and also to ask for a knowledge of the true life exemplified in the sovereign and true Commander, and the grace to imitate Him.
FIRST PART
THE STANDARD OF SATAN
140. FIRST POINT. Imagine you see the chief of all the enemy in the vast plain about Babylon, seated on a great throne of fire and smoke, his appearance inspiring horror and terror.
141. SECOND POINT. Consider how he summons innumerable demons, and scatters them, some to one city and some to another, throughout the whole world, so that no province, no place, no state of life, no individual is overlooked.
142. THIRD POINT. Consider the address he makes to them, how he goads them on to lay snares for men and bind them with chains. First they are to tempt them to covet riches (as Satan himself is accustomed to do in most cases) that they may the more easily attain the empty honors of this world, and then come to overweening pride.
The first step, then, will be riches, the second honor, the third pride. From these three steps the evil one leads to all other vices.
SECOND PART
THE STANDARD OF CHRIST
143. In a similar way, we are to picture to ourselves the sovereign and true Commander, Christ our Lord.
144. FIRST POINT. Consider Christ our Lord, standing in a lowly place in a great plain about the region of Jerusalem, His appearance beautiful and attractive.
145. SECOND POINT. Consider how the Lord of all the world chooses so many persons, apostles, disciples, etc., and sends them throughout the whole world to spread His sacred doctrine among all men, no matter what their state or condition.

After the first day of retreat I saw the
sun over the river and Madison —
It was the biggest I ever saw —
It was red and orange and golden —
I raced to catch it by downtown
Madison over the River —
I only saw it from afar —
Then it went down —
Today coming to this last day of retreat
I saw the pulsating sun — through
the trees — brighter than ever —
silver gold —
dancing like a big silver bright
light, as one so bright — I never
saw, but mirror-like as the
vision of March 26, 1996
The river and the sky and its surroundings
seemed to be so brightly lighted
there was no color —
just the brightest light — so
bright the color over the river and
sky and trees gone —
a land of light —
a scene of the brightest light —
a pulsating sun and
it says in Isaiah —
Isaiah 30: 26
"Then moonlight will be bright as sunlight
and sunlight itself be seven times brighter
-like the light of seven days in one-..."
The more we spread the devotion to the Sacred Heart
and Immaculate Heart and the knowledge of our
Church and the sacraments —
Let people know, who are hungering,
Jesus is with us truly present
in the Eucharist —
The more the world will be filled with
light — the brightest light —
during this retreat and all retreats we pray
for grace, for the priests, the Church and the world —
for grace for ourselves to be more deeply
one in Him and
for grace for all of us to be one with each
other doing His work —
doing the will of God —
Don't give into the disorder satan wants —
leading us in disorder — down
confusing roads —
be steadfast in following the
will of God —
giving ourselves unreservedly
to His will — to our vocation —
In this lies our peace —
our greater intimacy with God —
Jesus says
I am the Good Shepherd
I know Mine and Mine know Me —
Listen to Me —
and we say
"Speak Lord, your servant
is listening —
not to the disorder and confusion
of satan,
but to our heavenly Father and
His will for us"
Our goals are to be good goals —
Our greatest goal is for us to do
all things for the greater glory
of God —
(1) God can clearly tell us it is God's will —
we see with unmistakable clarity —
St. Paul falling off the horse —
(2) We may say "For years I have felt this vocation —
God has been working in my
life and I keep knowing it
gives me peace"
(3) What is the goal of my life —
Not much movement —
I work as a spiral staircase as
Pope John Paul II says —
I don't move too fast —
until I know assuredly what He wants —
It can be like a balance —
Don't rush it
What would God say to us on
judgment day —
what should I have done —
When I do God's will — I have
joy and peace —
even though I have to
carry a cross — in following
Him — I will suffer and rise --
But in the water Fr. Carter said
I beg God to give me grace to know
my vocation —
Meditate on the passion —
Meditate on the rosary —
Think of Jesus and how He gave Himself —
even though Judas betrayed
Him — Jesus did God's will —
Jesus treated all the Apostles belovedly
Jesus treats us this way
Even Peter denied Christ
But Judas committed suicide —
Peter was sorry —
Peter had a contrite heart —
Jesus washed their feet, He washed the dirt away
(Jesus forgives our sins in confession)
Jesus wants us to go to Mass
and to be sorry for sins — to be made
more filled with His life —
to be transformed —
Jesus gives us baptism — in which He
