Prayer for Grace for our Country
Dear Father united to Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacrifice of Calvary sacramentally made present, celebrated around the world, in the Holy Spirit. We offer up all we do united to the Mass. We unite in one mind and one heart as members of the mystical body of Christ, with Christ our head in the pure and holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary, through the powerful intercession of Mary with all the angels and saints and souls in purgatory, and we beg for the saving grace, for our country, the United States. Please help us. We further pray for unity to always do the will of God in love. We spread the Blood of Jesus on the leaders and people of the United States and cast the devil into hell. We consecrate our country to the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart and all our dioceses, and beg for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. God help us. We pray for our families, the priests, the Church and the world. In the Name of Jesus please hear us, we pray. We pray for our president and leaders. We pray that we are united as one nation under God to work together in love as God wants.

I woke today and
a blanket of snow had
covered the earth.
The trees were covered so beautifully,
the ground so softly.
The flakes come so quietly and they
cover the earth in richness
and beauty.
God gives us
so many signs every day.
He gives us the beautiful rolling hills
so we can see and have such
pleasure in their beauty.
He gives us the softly fallen beautiful
snow and our heart feels
at rest by the beautiful
scene He has painted for us.
I see roads
and hills and scenes
in nature and my heart finds
rest.
He gives
us music to soothe our
aching heart.
Here is a
message from Mary
January 2, 1999.
January 2, 1999
Mary: I am Our Lady of Snows. I come to cover the earth with a soft white blanket of my love.
I come to bring peace to the earth. I tell you to let go of the anxiety in your heart and experience my peace and His love.
I am your heavenly Mother. I come to hold you and caress you and take you to my Immaculate Heart.
Here is a picture of Columbiere the morning after Fr. Carter died.
Here are his works for us
He leaves these seeds with us.
God's hand
extends over all of us.
This is His world.
God created all these things for us;
the sun, the moon, the clouds,
the air, (cold and warm),
the wind, the rolling hills,
the flowers, the snow, the
baby to touch and to love -
the face of the people to look
into with love -
the eyes of the toddlers full of
wonder and joy -
Oh God today you
give us so many
gifts, we cannot hold on to
people and certain things -
you give us gifts a-new.
Some people want
people to be with
that is not God's will -
A person
cannot covet another's
spouse.
"You shall not covet your neighbor's wife."
God gives
us people to love today in our lives -
God gives us people that love us
and we miss that gift if we
are hungering for the love of
another that is not wanting to
be with us.
Some want
people to love them like
they want a house or boat -
they
center their whole life
in trying to get someone especially
to love them who doesn't
want to love them.
What a waste of energy.
We must
do God's will -
not wasting precious time
coveting others.
Jesus loves us so
much.
He is always there.
He fills our needs.
He is our Divine Bridegroom.
He is God Almighty.
Our God loves us -
He gives us Himself in the Eucharist.
God gives us the
priest - to guide us -
to administer the sacraments -
God gives us such gifts
Many times we
want things we
don't have and miss the
gifts we do have.
From a Lenten Homily, March 24, 2000
Live in the Moment
Today’s Gospel in its story certainly points ahead to Jesus in His Passion and death. And as we read passages such as this during the Lenten season, we are reminded once again that the Church in her Liturgy of the Word gives us an opportunity to undergo a purification, an ever deepening cleansing of ourselves so that we may be a more fit instrument for receiving the great graces which are to be given to us at the time of the Resurrection memorial on Easter. And so all in all, Lent is a time of purification to prepare us for ever-greater gifts of the Lord. It’s a time of self-discipline, a time to renew our efforts to be self-disciplined in the service of the Lord. Self-discipline is an aspect of purification. And I suggest that one of the most difficult acts of self-discipline in the spiritual journey is to concentrate on the present moment. We have a very strong tendency to disregard the importance of the present moment by focusing in a wrong way on the past or in a wrong way on the future. There are proper occasions for thinking of the past and the future. For example, we have to learn from the past and we have to prepare for the future, but our great emphasis has to be upon the present. There is a Latin axiom which says, age quod agis, age quod agis, which means: do what you are doing, concentrate on the present. And of course we are familiar with that term in the history of spirituality: the sacrament of the present moment. And so the discipline of Lent certainly encourages us to include in a deeper self-discipline a greater determination to get as much as we can out of the present moment. People with a terminal illness have an opportunity as they prepare for death for increased prayer, contrition, love of God. However, some are taken very, very quickly. But for those who have the opportunity of knowing with some certainty the time of their death, I’m sure as they look back on their lives, they are saddened by the many times they did not use time and opportunities for the service of the Lord properly, and are overjoyed at those times in which they did use the present opportunity properly. A great means we have of living in the present properly is a greater focus upon our Lord. For if I have that awareness of the fact I am united with Jesus here and now, why should I be concerned so much about the future or the past? Yes, a great help in living in the present and deriving all the good we can from it for ourselves and others is an ever greater focus upon Jesus, because the more I focus upon Jesus and the more I live with Him in the present moment, the more I am satisfied with the present moment. And so let us in our Lenten activity resolve to grow in that self-discipline - which is very difficult at times - to really live in the presence with the fullness of our being as much as is possible, with the help of God’s grace. Now is the day of salvation. Now is the day of salvation.

Messenger: Before the 17th meeting in January of 1995, I had received the following vision when at Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Chains. It was either late December, 1994 or early January, 1995. I drew the picture in the notebook.
It looks as follows:
The face was a flesh colored, but I could not see the features. The gown was white with a square neck.
The next day Jesus told me it was Father Carter.

Talk given by Fr. Edward J. Carter, S.J.
Founder of Shepherds of Christ MinistriesTalk given February 13, 1997 National Conference of Shepherds of Christ, held at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center, Norwood, Ohio.
Before we begin the rosary, I’d like to say a few words about the great importance of these days on the 13th of each month. Before Our Lord asked me to begin the Shepherds of Christ Ministries, the 1st dimension of that ministries was given to me on May the 31st, 1994. But before Our Lord asked me to start the ministries, I had been given a great devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. And I knew that everything concerning recent Marian apparitions centered around the Fatima message. The Fatima message is key to the peace of the world, as Our Lady of Fatima has told us. So because I had been given a great devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, it was no surprise to me when Our Lord told me, and through me the whole Movement, the great connection that there would be between Shepherds of Christ Ministries and helping to bring the Fatima message to conclusion. I’ll expand more upon that in my talk this afternoon. But here and now I’d like to read just a part of the message I received on October the 13th, 1994, when Our Lord called the full Ministries into existence. It had begun May 31st , some five or six months previous to that. But really October the 13th, 1994, marks the real birth, the complete birth of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. And part of the message I received on that day reads as follows:
"I am giving you this message on this day, the 77th anniversary of the great apparition at Fatima, because of the close connection between the Shepherds of Christ Movement and the Fatima message. The Fatima message is centered in devotion to My Heart and My Mother’s Heart, especially in consecration to Our Hearts. Shepherds of Christ Ministries is also centered in devotion to Our Hearts. I will use Shepherds of Christ Ministries as a great instrument in helping to bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the Reign of My Sacred Heart. Today then, October the 13th, 1994, the 77th anniversary of the great apparition at Fatima, marks the birth of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. I pour forth the great love of My Sacred Heart to all. I am Jesus, the Chief Shepherd of the Flock."
The calling of Our Lord to Shepherds of Christ to be present if possible at these meetings on the 13th of each month, and if they cannot be present physically, to be present in spirit with us then comes as no surprise. It’s merely another unfolding in the history of the Shepherds of Christ Movement and in the Fatima message.
These 13th of the months meetings are extremely important. They are great instruments which Our Lord and Our Lady are using to help bring to completion the Fatima message, which will result in that great era of peace, which Our Lady of Fatima promised eventually would come to the world.
So I ask you to take these meetings on the 13th of the month with the utmost seriousness, gratitude, thanksgiving, joy that Our Lord, for His own reasons has chosen Shepherds of Christ, the members thereof, the whole Ministries to play such a great part in the completion of the Fatima message. It comes as no surprise either that Our Lord gives special messages during the rosary on the meeting of the 13th, just as Our Lady of Fatima gave messages to the three visionaries at Fatima in 1917, from May through October. So at this stage of the Fatima message’s unfolding, it is no surprise that they continue, and in a new way and a new phase of the Fatima plan, give us these very special messages on the 13th. They are meant not only for us here present, they are meant for all members of the Movement, and eventually for the whole world. All these messages, all these rosaries on the 13th, eventually go onto our Internet with its world-wide audience.
So please, be very grateful to God for the messages He gives us during the rosary. Not everything which Rita says is a message. I think you’ll be able to distinguish when she’s receiving a message from Our Lord or from Our Lady, and when she is speaking from her own heart. Sometimes the transition is very quick and you may miss it, but there are both ways in which meditations are given on the decades: in strict locutions or messages, and then from Rita’s meditations or reflections herself.
(After the Rosary)
I wish to thank everybody who made the effort to be here with us, especially those people who had to travel from out of town. I’m sure the Lord has blessed you already and will continue to do so for your effort to be here. These are extremely important meetings on the 13th of the month. Our Lord has, Himself, instructed us in His great love and mercy for us and the whole world to have them. From these meetings, the messages of Our Lord, the previous message given at Fatima, go out to the whole world...
I sort of left off when I introduced the rosary by reading the rest, or at least a good part of the rest, of that message which I, myself, received on October the 13th, 1994, when Our Lord called the full Shepherds of Christ Ministries into existence.
"My beloved priest-companion, today I come to you with another mission."
He had already asked me on May the 31st of 1994 to start the priestly newsletter and then shortly after that to start the prayer chapters.
"I’m asking you to establish Shepherds of Christ Ministries. At My request you have already begun the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the prayer chapters, Shepherds of Christ Associates...
When this occurs, My Church and the world will be experiencing the great era of peace promised by My Mother at Fatima.
"Today, then, October 13, 1994, the 77th Anniversary of the Great Apparition at Fatima, marks the birth of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. I pour forth the great love of My Sacred Heart to all. I am Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock."
So (this is) one of the most important messages given in the whole history of our Movement, and I think you can see why. Not only was Our Lord calling the Ministries into full bloom with this message, but He was making that great connection between Shepherds of Christ and the Fatima message.
You see how He says that both the Fatima message and Shepherds of Christ is centered in devotion, and especially in consecration, to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
So in my moments here before you this afternoon, I wish to speak a bit about this consecration.
I’ll start off by reading a message of Our Lord and from "Tell My People" which deals with this consecration to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
"My beloved friend, tell My people that I desire all to consecrate themselves to My Sacred Heart and to Mary’s Immaculate Heart. Tell them not to just recite words in making the Act of Consecration, but to realize what they are saying. Consecration to Our Hearts means a total gift of self. That means handing over everything to Me and My Mother. Consecration means a willingness to surrender completely to Me. In Baptism, one is consecrated to Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But how many fail to live out their consecration? I extend to all the invitation to renew this Baptismal consecration through consecration to My Heart and to My Mother’s Heart.
"My beloved companion, I have taught you what this consecration means. I have given you great peace, joy and happiness because you have made this consecration. I have taught you that you are to renew this act of consecration each day. I constantly remind you that you are to pray each day for the grace to more and more live the consecration. I have taught you that your consecration to Me and My Mother means that you constantly surrender yourself to Us and to Our care. I have taught you that the more you surrender yourself to Me, the more I live in you, and through you and for you. I have taught you that My great love for you longs to draw you more deeply into My Heart. I have shown you that I wish your Mother Mary to place you there within My Heart, and that the more you dwell within her Heart, the more deeply she places you within My Heart. Dwelling within Our Hearts, the Holy Spirit fashions you more and more in My likeness. The Father thus looks upon you with greater favor and takes you more closely to Himself.
"Tell My people all these wondrous truths. I am Lord and Master and I desire all to listen to My words. (end of message)"
And what beautiful words those are, which Christ gives all, to us all regarding the consecration to His Heart and Mary’s Heart.
I want to - after that message of Jesus telling us what consecration involves, I wish to single out a few aspects of the consecration, what it includes. One aspect of our consecration and especially the consecration which Our Lord has given us for Shepherds of Christ, one aspect of our consecration to Their Hearts is to realize that we are apostles and that we are called to go out into the world as we have heard in the rosary today, and other times to be the apostles of His love, of His love and His Mother’s love, and thus to help bring about that great era of peace promised by Our Lord, Our Lady of Fatima in which love will just dominate. That’s what it means when Our Lady says, "In the end," she says, "my Immaculate Heart will triumph." And along with that triumph of her Immaculate Heart will occur the Reign of the Sacred Heart. The Reign of the Sacred Heart and the triumph of the Immaculate Heart simply is a reign of love, a triumph of love and in that era there will be a type of love existent in the hearts of the members of the human family never known before. We will all be so united in love to the Father and the Holy Spirit through the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. And not only with Them, but with each other. What a glorious era we have to look forward to.
We are apostles. More and more as the Movement has gone on, Jesus is letting us know that, yes, we are supposed to pray. This is one of our primary duties in the chapters and elsewhere, to pray for priests and all others. But more and more He is telling us that now is the time to start to more and more move out from our chapters and to be apostles of His love, to help spread the Movement, to help spread the consecrations in the schools through the consecration cards, the Rosary Aves, both of which have the Imprimatur of the Cincinnati Archdiocese, to help spread all our materials, all our books and all the various rosaries, the rosary tapes. And you are called to do that.
In the beginning of the Movement, it was a relatively few people who were carrying the burden and carrying the Ministry on. We have entered a great new episode of the Movement, principally in that episode, principally centers itself around these meetings of the 13th. More and more people are realizing as they hear more and more the messages, more and more people in the Movement are hearing that Jesus is calling each one of us to be apostles of the Movement, to spread the Movement, to help implement the various ministries in all ways possible, to help spread the movement by starting new prayer chapters. Just think if we have something like, I guess, 2500-3000 members in the chapters and the Apostles of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Movement here in this country and throughout the world-most of those, thus far, in this country.
But just think if each person would take it upon himself or herself to go all out to get one more new chapter formed. That’s not impossible, I don’t think that’s asking something heroic. That would double our chapters; that would double our prayer power. And so much of the Movement, the success of it, depends upon the prayer power coming out of the chapters and the Apostles of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Movement. So He’s calling all of us; and how admirably so many in the Movement are answering. I wish to single out-just because all of you know about the Florida apparition-four or five, six, I don’t know how many now of our members from Rita’s core group have gone down to the apparition site. One of our main members, Tom A., has a home there at St. Petersburg, and Clearwater is just a short distance from there. And they’ve been going down and staying in his house, and each day going over to the apparition site and handing out our materials, especially the rosary message tape, but other materials also. This is what Our Lord, Our Lady has asked us to do. And they’ve had phenomenal success. We can’t keep enough materials down there. They just, the people are just so eager for it. But this is what. . .and they do it on their own time, they drive down, some of them spend three or four days, some a week and they come back. But what a marvelous example of their answering the call to the apostleship to which Jesus calls them in the Movement. And they’re doing just a tremendous amount of good.
And by the way when I’m talking and as long as I’m talking about Florida I might read you part of that message of Our Lady. You have read it, no doubt if you’d gotten a copy of the picture with the message on the back. But for my own purposes I want to read that here and now. So Mary tells us, this is the message which Rita received on December the 19th:
Mary: My dear children, I give to you, my Son, Jesus, born in a stable in Bethlehem on Christmas morn’. He is the Almighty God the Light of the world.
I appear to you, my children on a bank in Florida. You have made money your god! Do you know how cold are your hearts? You turn away from my Son, Jesus for your money. Your money is your god.
I am Mary, your Mother. I do not appear as I once appeared to you.
When Rita got that message and when she gave it to me, both of us for a number of days thought that her number of apparitions was simply decreasing, but we both came to the conclusion; well Rita came to the conclusion and I followed after her, in agreement with her conclusion, Mary says, "I do not appear as I once appeared to you." She was saying apparently that, "I’m appearing to you in this new way, where the whole world can see me."
So many others’ apparition sites have had their believers of course, but many, many people throughout the world have doubted all this talk about the various apparition sites of Mary. She says, "I do not appear as I once appeared to you." She is appearing on a bank for the whole world to see.
Mary continues:
"I am asking you today to circulate my message given on a tape on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12, 1996. Please circulate this tape now."
That’s one of the main things our apostles down in Florida are doing, handing out the tapes with this message.
Mary continues:
"Please circulate this tape now. Give it to as many people as you can. I am Mary, your Mother. Please circulate my Rosary Book."
She’s referring to a book which Shepherds of Christ Publications came out right around Christmas time. Hopefully all of you have received it in the mail, Rosaries from the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, as given to Rita. Now here’s the point I want to make here and now. Notice how she links up the apparition site with the circulation of her Rosary Book, and we are circulating the book there. But to me, there’s a very great phenomenon connected with the colors on the window, bank windows and the Rosary Book. And Rita herself pointed this out to me. Now this cover on this book-it was designed by Hal K. weeks and even months before the apparition of Our Lady on the bank in Florida. When did you start to design that Hal? (question asked to Harold K.) Almost, two years ago. And the colors were already selected months ago, right? Well if you’ll take the picture of the bank of the apparition of the bank on Florida, and this Rosary Book, you will notice that the colors are the same. To me, that’s a miraculous confirmation of the fact that Our Lady is connecting the apparition site on the bank in Florida with the Shepherds of Christ Ministries in a special way with the rosaries. It’s just phenomenal. You can check the colors out one by one. They’re a little bit brighter on the book, but because of the photography involved I think you can see how they wouldn’t be quite as bright on this. But check out the colors. They’re the same on the Rosary Book and on this. And these colors, as I say, were picked by Hal months and months before the apparition. You can take it for what you want, but for me it’s a miraculous confirmation of this message, that Our Lady chose those same colors which are on the front of her Rosary Book, to show the same colors relative to her apparition there on the bank in Florida.
Therefore, our Florida apostles are one of the many examples I could point out to you of how people in the Movement are more and more taking up the challenge, the invitation of Jesus and Mary to spread this Movement throughout the world. They have chosen the Shepherds of Christ Movement as a great instrument to help bring about the Fatima message. How privileged we are to be part of it, to be called to it. I believe, I’ve told you this before, at least some of you have heard me, I think this Movement is one of the greatest in the history of the Church. And I think history itself will bear that out. So how precious a gift each of us has been given by Our Lord in calling us to be members of this Movement.
Therefore, a very important aspect of our consecration to Their Hearts is to be apostles, to help spread all the ministries. Another aspect of our consecration is the idea of union. I think we’re all very well aware how the consecration unites us to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and through Them to the Father and the Holy Spirit. But perhaps we don’t think often enough of that how it unites us with one another, in the Movement, in the Church, throughout the whole world. You cannot grow in union with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and Mary, without growing in union with all your neighbors. And this is the tough part. It’s relatively easy to love Father, Son and Holy Spirit and Mary, isn’t it? Three Persons in One God infinitely perfect and Mary a human person, perfect, free from all sin. It’s easy to love the Triune Persons and Mary, relatively speaking. But it’s not all that easy to love each other all the time, isn’t it? And yet that’s what Jesus calls us to. Jesus literally died for each and every person. And no matter how unattractive a person is in their behavior, Jesus still died for that person. If He loved that person enough to die for that person, then certainly we have to love them, him or her, and especially within the Movement. Satan is violently attacking us, he will always try to cause division in the Movement. But if we are going to be examples - and we are called to that, to be examples to the whole Church and the whole world of what it’s going to be like in the new era, when we all exist in such great loving union with each other in Christ. We are the forerunners of that. We’re helping to prepare the way for that for the whole Church, for the whole world. Not only us, but we have been given a special mission for that. So we have to be united in love with each other, if we have differences, we work them out in love and in peace. We work them out in love and in peace. In one of the Blue Books, Jesus says, "The glass is either half-empty or it’s half-full." I look at my neighbor, whether he or she is in the Movement or outside of it. I can either look at the half-empty part of the glass or the half-full part. I can either look at that person’s faults and concentrate on them, or I can concentrate on the great goodness which is inherently theirs. If they are in the state of sanctifying grace, their soul is magnificently beautiful, despite the blemishes of their failings of their sins. When I look at a person, do I look at the half-empty part or the half-full part?
Everyday I ask you to pray for a growing unity in the Movement. What Our Lord has allowed us to accomplish so far in less than three years is just miraculous, I think it’s just miraculous. The sign becomes ever and ever greater that He started this Movement, not me. I was just the instrument which He chose to head it up. He has given me so many beautiful people to help me do the Movement and that includes all of you. He has given you so many beautiful companions in the Movement. Let us concentrate on that part of it. This is the only way we’re going to be models to the rest of the Church and the world, of the profound union that Our Lord calls us to, not only with Himself, but with each other.
Strength for all this, day after day, it’s not easy to live this way, is it? But as I said in my homily, the great strength we have for that is the Eucharist. The power of the Eucharist is much greater than your faults or my faults or the faults of others in the Movement that surround you, or the faults of others in your parish, or the rest of the Church and the world. He can give you the strength to arise above your own faults and the faults of others around you, and march forward in the most positive way towards this great new era. Oh what a gift the Eucharist is.
St. Julian Eymard, the founder of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers, who gave us such beautiful writings on the Eucharist, in one of his writings on the Eucharist he says:
"It is true also that the world does all in its power to prevent us from loving Jesus in the most Blessed Sacrament with a real and practical love, to prevent us from visiting Him and cripple the effects of His love. This world engrosses the attention of souls; it finds and enslaves them with external occupations in order to deter them from dwelling too long on the love of Jesus. It even fights directly against this practical love and represents it as optional, as practicable at most only in a convent. And the devil wages incessant warfare on our love for Jesus in the most Blessed Sacrament. He knows that Jesus is there, living and substantially present; that by Himself He is drawing souls and taking direct possession of them. The devil tries to efface the thought of the Eucharist in us, and the good impression made by it; for in his mind, that should decide the issue of the struggle." (That is if we give in to Jesus’ desire to possess us in the Eucharist.) "And yet God is all love. This gentle Savior pleads with us from the Host: "Love Me as I have loved you; abide in My love! I came to cast the fire of love on the earth, and My most ardent desire is that it should set your hearts on fire." 1
1St. Peter Eymard, "The Most Blessed Sacrament Is Not Loved!," as in The Treasury of Catholic Wisdom, Fr. John Hardon, S.J., ed.; Ignatius Press, p. 384.
Union amongst ourselves through our union with Jesus and Mary and Father and Holy Spirit. Each of you is so precious to Jesus. He has given each of you a very, very, very special gift, precious gift, in calling you to be involved in this Movement. Very early on in the Movement, it was July 31st of 1994, on the Feast of St. Ignatius, He often gives me very important messages on key feasts, and the Feast of St. Ignatius is a feast for Jesuits, Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. And He told me in that message that He would give great, great, great graces to those who join the Movement, and hope I’m sure, all of you who have been in the Movement have experienced those great graces. In appreciation for the great graces Jesus has given you in the Movement, I ask you, with great joy and a great sense of responsibility and a great sense of privilege, to do what you can to implement the ministries of the Movement. No one else can do your role, can carry out your part. You are preciously unique, no one exists like you now, no one ever has, no one ever will. It’s you alone who can give Jesus the opportunity to do what He wants through your humanity to help spread the Movement. To the extent that you answer Jesus and give yourselves to Him, and work as time and energy permits, as your other duties permit to help spread the ministries, to that extent you give Him an opportunity which no one else can give Him, and to the extent that you hold back, to this extent He loses this opportunity which no one else can give Him.
A precious Savior who has done so much to each of us. Certainly He deserves our full loving response. As I kneel before the crucifix each day, either before a actual crucifix or one in my mind, let us ask ourselves those questions posed to us by Ignatius Loyola, "What have I done for Christ?" "What am I now doing for Christ?" "What ought I to do for Christ?"

Messenger: Dear Jesus,
I give you myself.
Today is Fr. Carter's birthday.
Fr. Carter was loving and he cared for
the movement.
He tried to always have pure actions
dealing with the movement.
He told me in 1994 he had a vision
of the levels the movement would
have — priests
— servants and handmaids
— apostles
I know it is Jesus' desire that we have
this commitment of the
servants and handmaids to be
the special spouse of Christ —
working and praying to help bring
about the Reign of the Sacred Heart
and triumph of the Immaculate
Heart and help running the Movement.
The Shepherds of Christ Movement
strongly relies on the commitment
of the servants and handmaids.
Fr. Carter received them all into this
special calling.

Messenger: Tomorrow is Father Carter's birthday.
We listened to an excerpt of a tape on January 13, 2001.
It was from his 70th
birthday celebration
which we celebrated on
January 17, 1999.
He said he worked so
hard on his birthday
he never even had time
to go out to dinner.
He had been writing the
priestly newsletter.
Father Carter is gone now but the seeds he planted
in so many from his
writings live in
our hearts.
Today for the message I include two things,
January 15, 1994, a
message from Blue Book II
he loved so much. It
was one of his
favorite messages.
Father Carter worked hard on
the newsletter January/
February 1999, on Priesthood.
He disciplined himself so he could study
and write and pray.
Today his writings will reach so many.
Every person we touch can effect
so many people's lives.
I remember the funerals this summer and the
children of the
grandfathers that died.
God's grace is a gift.
Baptism is a gift.
We take so many things for granted.
God loves us so much and He wants us to
thank Him and love Him.
I thank God for the gift of Father Carter and
to be called to be a
shepherd of Christ.
I am proud to be called
to Jesus' Movement.
. . . and when we go to heaven we will be asked,
"Where are your
children?"
Our Church is to help bring forth fruit for the
Kingdom.
The Church is Mother.
Mary cries for her children.
All of us in the Church must spread the
good news.
We are the sons of God.
Christ came and showed us how to live as
a son of God.
Today we model our lives after His.
Oh God, show us the way.
Jesus speaks: I am the Way; I am Truth and Life. (John 14:6)
Messenger: Father Carter, Happy Birthday January 15.
Now he is in a holy place.
God has enveloped him in His ravishing love.
Let's be thankful for the air we breathe.
Let's be thankful for our warm houses in the cold winter.
Let's be thankful for each other.
Let's be thankful for our clothes.
Let's be thankful for our food.
Let's be thankful for His grace.
The list can go on and on, God is so good to us.
January l5, 1994 4:50 a.m.
Jesus speaks: I am Jesus, Your Savior. When you are tired and weary, come to Me. I wait for you as would a doting mother, ready to kiss your little wounds and send you out to play.
I love you so, little one. Come and be with Me in your heart. Do not worry about anything concerning this book. My hand is in everything and I will see to its publishing Myself. Do you fret and fume for nothing? I am God. Why should you worry for the work of God? Do you not think I will take care of My own work? I tend to everything that needs to be done in your life. You are so precious to Me. There is not one thing that happens that I have not consented to.
To be able to be in the midst of adversity and struggle and say, "God's hand is here and He knows what is happening; I will let go of my anxiety and be at peace," is to reach a great plateau of trust in Me! Trust in Me in all your trials. Refuse to worry. What good does such a needless task perform? If I am God and I am there in every moment of your life and you truly believe it, what are you doing letting yourself worry?
Child, I have so much love for you that I died on the a cross for you. Look at Me there. I spread My arms and came for you. I love you this much, this very day. How do I make you realize how much you mean to Me? Well, I am here in everything you are experiencing. There is not one thing that happens without My consent. Do you hear Me? Think of one of your little hairs falling out. I am that hyper-vigilant. I know whence that hair came. I know the very pore on your head it fell from.
If I, Jesus, am that attentive to you and everything that is happening with you, what are you doing worrying? It is your trust and faith in Me that gives you peace. Practice letting go on all matters. Refuse to worry. Place every care in My hands and trust I will tend to it. You, My child, are so precious. I want you to know how I am truly there, loving you and watching you and guarding you.
I watch you like a doting mother lest you stumble and fall and lose your way. In that little trial, practice turning it over to Me. Trust in Me. It is an act of your will to truly trust Me or to worry about your problem.
Listen to Me saying, "Child, I love you, child, I am love, child, don't worry. Turn your burden over to Me." You can be free of worry if you let go. Sail away in your hot air balloon. Drop the package of worries at the foot of My cross and sail away in a trouble-free sky.
You are lifted to such heights in My love! I am so powerful. I can do all things. I am working in your life at every moment. I never leave you abandoned. Take this opportunity to get closer to Me.
It is in your trials you are taught how to trust. Do not curse the dark nights. Come to Me and let Me light your way. Take each trial as an opportunity to get closer to Me. Ascend the ladder to trust in the Lord. You develop trust a step at a time. Trust must be developed by you. Pray that you will learn all the lessons on trust I am sending you.
You are so favored, My little sweet one. I love you. I love you. I love you. Come to Me weary and leave carefree. Only I can take a burdened heart and give it rest. Do not go to your brothers and complain. Keep reading My letters to you (December 30, 1993). Know which letters are those that set you free of worry.
Note: In His December 30 letter He said, "It is in acceptance of all things that you are drawn closer to Me. Do not try to throw back into My face the little opportunity for grace you receive. Child, I am ever by your side and I am ever teaching you. Know that My hand is in everything you are experiencing. I am vigilant and by your side. Nothing happens to you that I have not consented to. I love you. Trust in Me."
Messenger: Jesus, I trust in you!
Jesus speaks: Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. I am there with you. Turn to Me. Turn to Me alone and I will give you rest. Oh, you, who are heavily burdened, I will give you rest!
1999 - ISSUE ONE
CONTENTS
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and the sheep do not belong to him, abandons the sheep and runs away as soon as he sees a wolf coming, and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep; this is because he is only a hired man and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep. (Jn 10:11-151)
Yes, the Good Shepherd has given His all for us. Through His life, His brutal and agonizing suffering and death on the cross, and His glorious resurrection, He has achieved new life for us. Through the sacrament of Holy Orders, Jesus has provided His Church with priests who play a major role in the dispensing of this life which Jesus has come to give and to give most abundantly. There follow various thoughts on the priesthood.Pope John Paul II states: "It is within the Church's mystery, as a mystery of Trinitarian communion in missionary tension, that every Christian identity is revealed, and likewise the specific identity of the priest and his ministry. Indeed, the priest, by virtue of the consecration which he receives in the sacrament of orders, is sent forth by the Father through the mediatorship of Jesus Christ, to whom he is configured in a special way as head and shepherd of his people, in order to live and work by the power of the Holy Spirit in service of the Church and for the salvation of the world."2
The Holy Father further states: "The priest finds the full truth of his identity in being a derivation, a specific participation in and continuation of Christ himself, the one high priest of the new and eternal covenant. The priest is a living and transparent image of Christ the priest. "3
Fr. Richard Nahman, O.S.A., tells about the priest's relationship with Christ.
"All too often Christ is one known about-maybe better known about than
Napoleon, Alexander the Great, John F. Kennedy-but still only known about and not
known. Much can be said, much can be appreciated and a great deal of dedication can spring
from knowledge about someone. But a personal relationship cannot be built on mere
knowledge about another. Knowledge about an individual and knowing anyone differs not in
the order of knowledge but in the order of experience. One may have studied every
conceivable expression of the reality 'friendship', and may know as much as there is to
know about friendship, but if he has never had a friend, then he does not know
friendship.
"It might be profitable here to ask the question: Does priestly formation today
emphasize, if not in theory at least in practice, knowledge about Christ or
knowledge of Christ?
"A priest is a man to whom Christ offers himself as the other in response to Whom he
will find his own identity. A priest is called to come to know Christ, him crucified. And
this knowledge leads to love, and this love to union and this union to identity...
"The crisis of identity within the priest fraternity can only be met by establishing
the ground of the individual's identity really with full intellectual conviction, in that
of Christ. This is the Christian paradox-losing oneself to find oneself-to which the
priest gives witness, not by what he does, but by what he is. It is the abandon in faith.
But all too frequently one's reaction is one of a drowning man, clinging desperately to
the neck of his would-be-saver. The more tenaciously he hangs on to what is immediately at
hand, the more certainly he is bringing his own destruction.
For the priest, the dynamics of being himself, achieving and coming to realize his own
identity, lies totally in the depth and intensity of his personal relationship with Christ
as a person whose dynamic, vital and real presence is 'experienced' and 'realized' in his
daily life." 4
The priest can obviously apply to himself in an appropriate way what Vatican II says
concerning the spiritual formation of seminarians: "Spiritual formation should be
closely linked with doctrinal and pastoral training. Especially with the help of the
spiritual director, such formation should help seminarians learn to live in familiar and
constant companionship with the Father, through Jesus Christ His Son, in the Holy Spirit.
By sacred ordination they will be molded in the likeness of Christ the Priest. As friends
they should be used to loyal association with Him through a profound identification of
their whole lives with His. They should live His paschal mystery in such a way that they
know how to initiate into it the people entrusted to them.
"They should be taught to look for Christ in many places: in faithful meditation on
God's word, in active communion with the most holy mysteries of the Church, especially in
the Eucharist and the divine Office, in the bishop who sends them, and in the people to
whom they are sent, especially the poor, the young, the sick, the sinful, and the
unbelieving. With the trust of a son, they should love and honor the most Blessed Virgin
Mary, who was given as a mother to His disciple by Christ Jesus as He hung dying on the
cross." 5
The theologian, Jean Galot, S.J., has some insightful thoughts on the priest as
shepherd: "As a mediator, the priest is a shepherd in the name of God, or more
precisely in the name of Christ, and through Christ, in the name of the Father. In the
priest is realized the prophetic role of Ezekiel in which Yahweh promises to be the
Shepherd of his people (Ezek 34).
"Some implications of this principle must be underlined. The priest does not draw the
inspiration for his pastoral zeal from his own feelings, from his own personal resolve to
create a better world. He is shepherd on the strength of God's pastoral intention and
represents specifically Christ the shepherd. Consequently he is called upon to fulfill his
pastoral mission not according to ideas of his own and his own personal ambitions, but in
keeping with God's own dispensation and the design of salvation devised by the Father and
carried out by Christ. Like Jesus himself, the priest is at the service of the
Father." 6
The Directory on the Ministry and Life of Priests
reminds priests that the
Eucharist must be at the center of their lives: "It is necessary to recall the
irreplaceable value that the daily celebration of the Holy Mass has for the priest...He
must live it as the central moment of his day and of his daily ministry, fruit of a
sincere desire and an occasion for a deep and effective encounter with Christ, and he must
take the greatest care to celebrate it with intimate participation of the mind and heart.
"In a society ever more sensitive to communication through signs and images, the
priest must pay adequate attention to all that which can enhance the decorum and
sacredness of the Eucharistic celebration. It is important that, in such ceremonies,
proper attention is given to the appropriateness and cleanliness of the place, the
structure of the altar and tabernacle, the dignity of the sacred vessels, the vestments,
the hymns, the music, the necessary silence, etc. These are all elements which can better
contribute to a better participation in the Eucharistic Sacrifice. In fact, a lack of
attention to the symbolic aspects of the liturgy and, even more, carelessness and
coldness, superficiality and disorder... weaken the process of strengthening the faith.
Those who improperly celebrate the Mass reveal a weakness in their faith and fail to
educate the others in the faith. Celebrating the Eucharist well, however, constitutes a
highly important catechesis on the Sacrifice...
"The centrality of the Eucharist should be apparent not only in the worthy
celebration of the Sacrifice, but also in the proper adoration of the Sacrament, so that
the priest might be the model for the faithful also in devout attention and diligent
meditation...whenever possible done in the presence of our Lord in the tabernacle. It is
hoped that priests entrusted with the guidance of communities dedicate long periods of
time for communal adoration and reserve the greatest attention and honour for the Most
Blessed Sacrament of the altar, also outside of the Holy Mass, over any other rite or
gesture. 'Faith and love for the Eucharist will not allow Christ to remain alone in his
presence in the tabernacle.' " 7
The same Directory emphasizes the great love priests should have for the
Church: "The priests, as collaborators of the Episcopal Order, form with their Bishop
a sole presbyterate and participate, in a subordinate degree, in the only priesthood of
Christ. Similar to the Bishop, they participate in that espousal dimension in relation to
the Church which is well expressed in the Rite of the episcopal ordination when the ring
is entrusted to them...
"By this communion with Christ the Spouse, the ministerial priesthood is also
founded-as Christ, with Christ, and in Christ-in that mystery of transcendent love of
which the marriage among Christians is an image and a participation.
"Called to the act of supernatural love, absolutely gratuitous, the priest should
love the Church as Christ has loved her, consecrating to her all his energies and giving
himself with pastoral charity in a continuous act of generosity."8
From Fr. Benedict Groeschel's book, A Priest Forever, here are the inspiring
words of Fr. Eugene Hamilton, who was ordained a priest very shortly before he died of
cancer. The following words were written as he was beginning to write his book,
Servant,
Victim, Brother, Listener, Friend:
"These reflections will form the basis for the rest of my outlook toward the disease,
life, death, the priesthood, and others. One could say they are the lens through which I
look at cancer and the overall experience.
"My hope is that all those affected by this disease-the patients, families, friends,
and those who care for them, will come to a certain amount of peace in their own
particular situation. I have found such peace in the Will of the Father. That is where the
seminarian and future priest will himself find peace as well. Cardinal Cooke realized this
and chose Fiat Voluntas Tua ("Thy Will Be Done") as his episcopal
motto. For those left behind for a while, my prayer is for your own peace as well."
9
"Christ's friendship assumes different forms. His love for Peter and John appear to have been outstanding in the case of his disciples, but he loved them in different ways. His love for John is more tender, and John will be known 'as the disciple whom Jesus loved.' All the disciples were, of course, disciples whom Jesus loved, but the words indicate that he had a particularly tender love for John, a love corresponding to John's sensitive nature. John is attracted by Christ from the first moment he meets him. Until then, apparently, he had been a follower of John the Baptist in his search for an ideal way of life and a spiritual master. It is not difficult to understand that the gentle ways of Jesus must have made an immediate impression on him, compared with the harsh asceticism of the Baptist. He therefore abandons the company of the austere prophet who threatens the people with divine wrath to follow the 'lamb of God,' who has come to take away the sins of the world. He feels a special need for affection himself and is drawn to a Master whose preaching is so obviously inspired by his pity for the crowds and whose miraculous cures show that he is constantly moved by goodness. Hence he is the disciple who becomes the closest follower of Jesus, in the sense that he is the nearest to him and most sensitive to all the manifestations of his friendship. Along with Peter and James he witnesses the Transfiguration on Tabor and the agony in the garden at Gethsemane. But above all he has the good fortune to lie on Christ's breast at the Last Supper. The physical heart of Jesus has a particular meaning for him, and he abandons himself to it, so to speak. This action marks the climax of his friendship and expresses the full measure of his love; it is also destined to remain the permanent symbol of his love, for John will be called 'the disciple who leaned upon the breast of the Lord.' At Calvary John takes his place at the foot of the cross along with the woman, and Christ confides to him the one he holds dearest in this world, his own mother. He gives the most loving of his disciples his most tender gift. The friendship John has formed with the Son was destined to be continued with his mother in the same atmosphere of gentle affection. At Calvary John also witnesses something destined to make a profound impression upon him, the piercing of the side of Jesus by the spear of the soldier. The spear of course only pierces a dead body, but it reaches the human heart on which the beloved apostle has been leaning less than twenty-four hours before in a transport of love. In the same way that the gift of his heart on the previous evening had been a symbol of his great friendship for him, so the piercing of his side now appears to John as a symbol of a love which has suffered to the bitter end. This spectacle serves to bind him to Christ more than ever and puts the seal, as it were, on their friendship.
John is the first of the apostles to arrive at the empty tomb on the morning of Easter. He is also the first one to recognize the Lord on the shore of the sea of Tiberias, because his love is more tender and therefore more perceptive. Finally, Christ promises John that his death shall be a prolongation of their friendship. The chief of the apostles is destined to undergo martyrdom, but John will only have to remain here until the Lord comes. His death will recall their intimacy at the Supper; Christ will simply come and allow the apostle's head to rest on his breast. The beautiful expression often used to describe a Christian death, 'going to sleep in the Lord', is especially applicable in the case of John, because he learned so well to know the meaning of that rest." 10
Pope John Paul II tells us: "The Church professes the mercy of God, the Church lives by it in her wide experience of faith and also in her teaching, constantly contemplating Christ, concentrating on him, on his life and on his Gospel, on his cross and resurrection, on his whole mystery. Everything that forms the 'vision' of Christ in the Church's living faith and teaching brings us nearer to the 'vision of the Father' in the holiness of his mercy. The Church seems in a particular way to profess the mercy of God and to venerate it when she directs herself to the heart of Christ. In fact, it is precisely this drawing close to Christ in the mystery of his heart which enables us to dwell on this point-a point in a sense central and also most accessible on the human level-of the revelation of the merciful love of the Father, a revelation which constituted the central content of the messianic mission of the Son of Man." 11
The Resurrected Christ has sent the
Holy Spirit to sanctify the world:
Still, I am telling you the truth:
it is for your own good that I am going,
because unless I go,
the Paraclete will not come to you;
but if I go,
I will send him to you (Jn 16:7)
The task of the Holy Spirit is to imprint the mystery of Christ ever more deeply upon the whole of creation. The Spirit is gradually leading us to full communion with the Father through Christ.
As this process evolves, the Holy Spirit concentrates His action upon the Church.
The Church progressively evolves by assimilating more perfectly the mystery of Christ. The Holy Spirit guides this process. He is the soul of the Church. He constantly labors to unite the diversified elements of the Church so that she is constantly being formed more and more according to the image of Christ.
The Holy Spirit as Sanctifier not only guides the entire Church, but He also guides each member of the Church. He strives to deepen the image of Christ which has been indelibly imprinted upon the Christian through Baptism and Confirmation. He labors to guide the Christian so that his or her activity becomes increasingly Christ-like. In this regard we notice the biblical distinction between living according to the Spirit rather than according to the flesh. To live according to the flesh does not refer only to sins against chastity. It refers to anything in one's life which is not according to the Spirit. Therefore, capitulating to intellectual pride, something "spiritual," would be living according to the flesh.
On the other hand, to live according to the Spirit can include the most intense involvement with material creation. This is Christ-like activity as long as one is following the lead of the Holy Spirit.
In summary, the Holy Spirit promotes the process of our growing as sons and daughters of the Father in Christ: "All who are guided by the Spirit of God are sons of God; for what you received was not the spirit of slavery to bring you back into fear; you received the Spirit of adoption, enabling us to cry out, 'Abba, Father!' The Spirit himself joins with our spirit to bear witness that we are children of God. And if we are children, then we are heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, provided that we share his suffering, so as to share his glory." (Rom 8:14-17).
Laurentin also speaks about the presence of Mary in the life of the Church: "Mary's discreet and universal presence continues throughout the life of the Church: visible and invisible, in history, its churches, its religious art. The call for her intercession appears throughout the dogmatic history of the Councils and the various complex struggles within the Church which, during the Carolingian era, inspired the famous anthiphon: 'You have conquered all heresies throughout the world.'
"She was also the inspiration for the initiatives and victories of the Church. Many feasts were instituted in order to commemorate her efficacious assistance. From the earliest centuries, the most ancient churches were dedicated to her since she was the first temple of God and remains the model of all others. Mary, model of the Church, is also the model of the churches where the eucharistic presence of the Lord is renewed and where prayer takes place continuously."
Present to the universal Church, Mary is also present to the individual Christian. Laurentin quotes from the writings of numerous holy men and women who give witness concerning this personal presence of Mary. There follow some of Laurentin's quotations regarding this testimony.
He refers to St. Anthony of Padua: "And St. Anthony of Padua, Doctor of the Church, whose canonization broke all records, taking place less than two years after his death, concluded one of his principal homilies with this prayer: 'We beseech you, Our Lady, our hope, tossed about as we are by the storm. You, Star of the Sea, bright ray, direct us towards safe harbour, assist our arrival by the protection of your presence. (Sermon 3 in Praise of the Virgin, op. 1, p 163.)"
Laurentin also refers to Jean Jacques Olier, founder of the Sulpicians, and one of the most prominent figures of the French School of Spirituality. He quotes Olier: "One Saturday Mary became interiorly present to my soul...She recalled to me that her dear son had told me that he would only live in me through her...as if she were a sacrament by which he wished to communicate his life to me. (Brettonvillers, L'esprit de Monsieur Olier, t. 1, 1, 9 pp. 396-397)."
And it is not surprising that Laurentin, in his discussion of Mary's presence to us, refers to St. Louis de Montfort, one of the greatest apostles of devotion to Mary. Laurentin says: "Let us not pick any further from the petals of the dossier (Laurentin refers to the list of citations he has made concerning Mary's presence to us) which stretches over the centuries and which seems to justify de Montfort's prediction in his Treatise on True Devotion (no 46): 'At the end of the world, the greatest saints will be those who are most devoted to praying to the most Holy Virgin, and who have had her always present... in order... to have her as their powerful helper in their time of need '' " 12
Let us remind ourselves, regarding St. Louis de Montfort, that his Marian devotion is deeply Christocentric. J. Patrick Gaffney, S. S. M., tells us: "Montfort's intense devotion to Mary is clearly Christocentric. So strongly does the saint insist upon the point that he forcefully teaches that if devotion to Mary alienated us from Jesus it would have to be rejected as a diabolical temptation...with Mary we enter into a more intense and more immediate union with the Incarnate Wisdom. To wrench Mary from salvation history and therefore from Christian life is, for Montfort, to reject the plan of salvation as decreed by the Father." 13
"At the Last Supper, on the night He was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of His Body and Blood. He did this in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the Cross throughout the centuries until He should come again, and so to entrust to His beloved spouse, the Church, a memorial of His death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us (Vatican II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, No. 47) 14
The Church, therefore, earnestly desires that Christ's faithful, when present at this mystery of faith, should not be there as strangers or silent spectators. On the contrary, through a proper appreciation of the rites and prayers they should participate knowingly, devoutly, and actively. They should be instructed by God's word and be refreshed at the table of the Lord's body; they should give thanks to God; by offering the Immaculate Victim, not only through the hands of the priest, but also with him, they should learn to offer themselves too. Through Christ the Mediator, they should be drawn day by day into ever closer union with God and with each other, so that finally God may be all in all." (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, No. 48) 15
"Through the Eucharistic Sacrifice Christ the Lord desired to set before us in a very special way this remarkable union whereby we are united one with another and with our divine Head, a union that no word of praise can ever sufficiently express. For in this sacrifice the sacred ministers act not only as the representative of our Saviour, but as the representative of the whole Mystical Body and of each one of the faithful. Again, in this act of sacrifice, the faithful of Christ, united by the common bond of devotion and prayer, offer to the eternal Father through the hands of the priest, whose prayer alone has made it present on the altar, the Immaculate Lamb, the most acceptable victim of praise and propitiation for the Church's universal need. Moreover, just as the divine Redeemer, while dying on the Cross, offered Himself to the eternal Father as Head of the whole human race, so now, 'in this clean oblation' He not only offers Himself as Head of the Church to His heavenly Father but in Himself His mystical members as well. He embraces them all, yes, even the weaker and more ailing members, with the deepest love of His Heart. (Pope Pius XII, Mystici Corporis AAS, XXXV, 232-233) 16
Fr. Bruno Forte tells us: "If the Eucharist forms the Church, it is also true that the Church makes the Eucharist. The Word is not proclaimed if there is no one to announce it; the memorial is not celebrated if there is no one to do it in obedience to the Lord's mandate. Word and Sacrament, therefore, require the ministry of the Church, the service of proclamation, of the celebration of the sacrifice, and of the regathering of the human family into the unity of the holy people of God. The eucharistic Church is totally ministerial: totally committed to this threefold role: prophetic, priestly and royal. Every baptized person is formed by the Spirit into the likeness of Christ, Priest, Prophet, and King, and consequently, in communion with all the others, committed to proclaiming the Word of God with his or her life, to celebrating the Easter memorial in order to bring about in history the justice of the...Kingdom of God." 17
From a spiritual journal we are given these words concerning the Mass: "I love you, Jesus, I love you. I love you, in the deepest love that I experience in uniting in the Sacrifice of the Mass. Let our hearts sing with the love of God as we are transformed more and more into the creatures that are more like the Father intends us to be. In this great mystery of God's burning love for His creatures, we unite with our beloved Savior in deepest union. In the Holy Eucharist, He gives Himself to us, and we become one with the Father through Jesus, in the Holy Spirit. Jesus gives us a share in His life and He nourishes this life with His own Body and Blood. We become one in Him, and we are united more deeply to each other. We are one body in Him."
Fr. Bruno Forte, a professor of Theology on the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Italy, tells us: "The Church comes from the Trinity, reflects in itself the Trinitarian communion-oneness in diversity-and journeys toward the Trinity, to the final handing over of all things to Christ, so that he might hand them over to the Father and God might be all in all. As 'a people gathered in the unity of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,' the Church is the Church of the Father. In his universal salvific plan, God has willed it to be a sign and instrument of the unity of people among themselves and with him. It is the Church of the Son, who through his incarnation and the paschal mystery has placed it in history as His Body. It is the Church of the Spirit, who makes the Risen Christ present in human history and enriching the people of God with charisms and ministries, leads it toward the promised future goal." 18
St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Ignatius of Loyola have all spoken with great spiritual insight on prayer. Fr. Thomas McKenna, C.M., offers some astute observations concerning their spiritual doctrine: "Confessing that the approach to God happens only in God's terms, Teresa nonetheless painted the way there in warm and welcoming colors. Her chronicle of the journey through a series of successively enclosed chambers (mansions) is classic among the descriptions of the mystical path. Sparkling as it does with images of emerging butterflies and bubbling artesian wells, it depicts her move from active to passive contemplation. Hardly a passive personality, Teresa initiated a prodigious reform within the Carmelites and this also testified to the synergy between genuine interior life and effective apostolic action."
"If Teresa sketched resting points along the spiritual ascent, her prodigy, John of the Cross, fixed his gaze on the summit. Compactly in his poetry but also in interpretive prose, John detailed the melting-down and recasting of human desire as it draws near the Divine. His is a shadowy passage through a twilight of the senses and spirit, an intensely dark nocturne, and out into a dawn streaked with the divine light. Over the course of that night, the darkness that blinded the traveler is revealed as the radiance of God, which at the earlier stage could not be recognized for the light it was...
"Ignatius of Loyola took a different tact as he found intimacy with God in the press of active service. As he interacted with his times and circumstances, he discovered certain patterns of divine guidance embedded within his experience and subsequently constructed an imaginatively rich method to help others appropriate theirs. Basic to his logic was a conviction that the Spirit of Jesus is 'afoot in the universe,' particularly within each individual, and that therefore the Spirit-filled person is able to know by both interior and exterior signs which activities are the genuine works of Christ. Such a mystical perception of the world ties the closest of bonds between prayer and ministry, providing the apostle to view all activities in their relation to their divine ground, and conversely to find that source in all things." 19
There are certain days which make us especially glad to be alive. Sometimes,-but not always-the weather is consonant with our inner feelings. If it happens to be fall (I speak as a resident of the mid-west in the U.S.A.), the air is crisp, quickened with October freshness. The leaves spellbind us with their rich and varied colors-their golds, and reds, and browns. The sky is autumn blue, clear blue, crowned with a golden sun. Or, if it happens to be spring, a deep and fresh greenness seems to cover everything, breathing forth new signs of hope for the world. A gentle breeze mixed with the sun's warmth in a perfect mixture makes us eagerly seek the out-of-doors.
Regardless of what the weather may be, special days, in the ultimate meaning of our present use of the word special, awaken us in an unique way regarding the beauty of life. We feel an inner glow. Life has a mysterious freshness on these days, making us especially aware of its grandeur, its tenderness, its expansiveness, its capacity to call us forth to greatness. On such days the splendid drama of life deeply attracts us, takes hold of us in those inner depths where we are most alive, where we are most ourselves.
We need these days on which we feel deeply alive. If such days do not periodically refresh us with their pleasant arrival, then boredom and the monotonous aspect of daily living, the drudgery of life, would be too much for us. As the little child needs to be especially refreshed on occasion by a surprise gift of candy or a toy, so all of us need periodic excursions into the realm of these special kind of days. They, too, are often pleasant surprises, for usually we cannot forecast their advent with any degree of precision.
We should make the most of these special days. They are precious gifts which God lovingly offers us. Through them God enlivens the awareness of our lives, and gives us the desire to refurbish what may have become a rather lethargic type of existence. We can fall into a rut of wasting many of the opportunities which each day presents. Our lethargic condition can cause us to squander much of life's precious moments. We must allow the beauty of the special kind of day we have been describing to once again enliven our appreciation of the value of life. We must determine not to squander existence, but to drink in its preciousness from the depths of our being in Christ Jesus Our Lord, Who leads us to the Father, in the Holy Spirit, with Mary our Mother at our side.
"This year, June 9, the feast of the Holy Trinity, I received the grace to understand more than ever how much Jesus desires to be loved". 20
"I understand so well that it is only love which makes us acceptable to God, that this love is the only goal I ambition. Jesus deigned to show me the road that leads to the Divine Furnace, and the road is the surrender of the little child who sleeps without fear in its Father's arms." 21
"Oh, if all weak and imperfect souls felt what the least of souls feels, that is, the soul of your little Therese, not one of you would despair of reaching the summit of love. Jesus does not demand great actions from us but simple surrender and gratitude." 22
"...He (Jesus) finds few hearts who surrender to Him without reservations, who understand the real tenderness of His infinite Love." 23
Here is an excerpt from a spiritual journal: "I envision the
sorrowful face of my beautiful Mother. I can see the face, so sorrowful-words cannot
express the sorrow. This is the face Jesus saw on the way to Calvary. How could anyone
describe the face Christ saw as Mary walked the nightmare path!
"I feel I am suffering, and I want relief. Behold the face of Mary on the way to
Calvary. Behold the face of Christ as Mary looked at Him. Endurance! His face was covered
with blood and wounds. This was the face of Mary, this was the face of Jesus. His way is
the way of the cross-and the cross leads to resurrection. In all the sufferings, Jesus and
May were comforted as they peered into each other's eyes. Let us be wrapped in the love of
these two Hearts. Pure love unites with pure love and we are caught in the embrace. This
love is found in dwelling in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. We are comforted by their love,
even in suffering, even in great suffering."
Here is an excerpt regarding Edith Stein, recently canonized by Pope John Paul II. The description refers to her life in the Carmelite Convent: "Edith did find some difficulty in adapting to community life. Her ineptitude at manual labor was a unique cross. She told Frau Conrad-Martius how difficult it was to get used to 'all the little details of the religious life'. But even these difficulties became part of her joy; they were like the 'small change' of the immense treasure that she offers the Lord and that he redeemed in joy. What counted was the essence of this life that she had so long desired, hoped for and awaited-the total oblation of herself to him whom she loved, a lasting presence with him, total absorption in him and therefore, always greater nearness to him. How could Edith help but be joyful? And when news came from the outside, how could she not but offer these heartaches as a pledge of her love for her Lover?." 24
Pope John Paul II instructs us: "In order to overcome today's widespread individualistic mentality, what is required is a concrete commitment to solidarity and charity, beginning in the family with the mutual support of husband and wife and the care which the different generations give to one another. In this sense the family too can be called a community of work and solidarity. It can happen, however, that when a family does decide to live up fully to its vocation, it finds itself without the necessary support from the State and without sufficient resources. It is urgent therefore to promote not only family policies, but also those social policies which have the family as their principal object, policies which assist the family by providing adequate resources and efficient means of support, both for bringing up children and for looking after the elderly, so as to avoid distancing the latter from the family unit and in order to strengthen relations between generations.
"Apart from the family, other intermediate communities exercise primary functions and give life to specific networks of solidarity. These develop as real communities of persons and strengthen the social fabric, preventing society from becoming an anonymous and impersonal mass, as unfortunately often happens today. It is in inter-relationships on many levels that a person lives, and that society becomes more 'personalized.' The individual today is often suffocated between two poles represented by the State and the marketplace. At times it seems as though he exists only as a producer and consumer of goods, or as an object of state administration. People lose sight of the fact that life in society has neither the market nor the State as its final purpose, since life itself has a unique value which the State and the market must serve. Man remains above all a being who seeks the truth and strives to live in that truth, deepening his understanding of it through a dialogue which involves past and future generations." 25
Many of the laity pray for us priests, and consistently so. Is it not also fitting that we priests pray for all our brothers in the priesthood, and consistently so? There follows a prayer that can aid us in this endeavor.
"Lord Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the Flock, we pray that in the great love and mercy of Your Heart that You attend to all the needs of your priest-shepherds throughout the world. We ask that you draw back to your Heart all those priests who have seriously strayed from your path, that you rekindle the desire for holiness in the hearts of those priests who have become lukewarm, and that you continue to give your fervent priests the desire for the highest holiness. United with Your Heart and Mary's Heart, we ask that you take this petition to your heavenly Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen".
The above prayer is taken from the prayer manual of Shepherds of Christ Associates, a facet of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. The associates are members of prayer groups which meet regularly to pray for all the needs of the entire human family, but most especially for priests. If you would like a copy, or copies, of this prayer manual, and, further, if you would like information on how to begin a Shepherds of Christ prayer chapter, contact us at:

Lord, Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the Flock, I consecrate my priestly life to your Heart, pierced on Calvary for love of us. From your pierced Heart the Church was born, the Church you have called me, as a priest, to serve in a most special way. You reveal Your Heart as a symbol of Your love in all its aspects, including Your most special love for me, whom you have chosen as Your priest-companion. Help me always to pour out my life in love of God and neighbor. Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You!
Dear Blessed Virgin Mary, I consecrate myself to your maternal and Immaculate Heart, this Heart which is symbol of your life of love. You are the Mother of my Savior. You are also My Mother. You love me with a most special love as this unique priest-son. In a return of love I give myself entirely to your motherly love and protection. You followed Jesus perfectly. You are His first and perfect disciple. Teach me to imitate you in the putting on of Christ. Be my motherly intercessor so that, through your Immaculate Heart, I may be guided to an ever closer union with the pierced Heart of Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the Flock, Who leads me to the Father in the Holy Spirit.
Thank you for Shepherds of Christ which I treasure and read as spiritual reading. It contains a volume of practical recommendations.
Let's pray for each other...

Dear Fr. Edward,
The peace of the Lord be always with you. Recently I received your newsletter, Shepherds of Christ from my Bishop. It is very interesting for me and the priests who are working with me in this parish.
I would like to ask you for the cassettes (Newsletters on cassettes).
Could you please supply me with these cassettes, which will be of great help to priests and the thirty catechists working in the same parish.
Thank you very much for your cooperation.
Yours in Christ,

Excerpt from January 10, 2001, Daily Message
Messenger: My dear apostles and donors,
I give my heart to Jesus and Mary with you in love. Father Carter has majorly affected all of our lives. The mission given to him (Father Carter) by Jesus is major to help bring about the renewal of the Church and the world.
Father Carter told me to put out the newsletter in January 2001. The 33 newsletters are not the complete picture of his writings. He has written seventeen books. His writings give deep insight into the divine mysteries.
His writings centered in consecration are a big part of God the Fathers plan to help bring about the Reign of Jesus' Sacred Heart and the mission Mary began at Fatima to help bring peace to the world.
The prayer chapters Father Carter began were to pray for the priests, the Church and the world.
It is absolutely essential we continue the newsletter with Father Carters writings; this was his desire.
It is absolutely necessary we tell the 70,000 priests about his death.
Funds are needed to pay off the last newsletters and pay for this one.
Father Carter gave his life for this mission, his last newsletter was to ask for funds to help support it. And I quote from Father Carter's last newsletter.
Letter written by Father Edward J. Carter S.J. for Shepherds of Christ priestly newsletter, Issue 4, 2000
CAN YOU HELP US?
As you know, we distribute the Newsletter free of charge. We have been publishing the Newsletter for six years. Although the fine print on the last page of each Newsletter says that donations are always welcome, we have, to this date, only made one major appeal for donations.
Now we come to you again and ask for your financial assistance. It is considerably expensive to print the Newsletter and to mail it here in the U.S.A. and to other countries around the world. With our English and Spanish editions, we send the Newsletter to readers in about 90 countries. We soon hope to add a French edition.
With the help of Gods grace, the Newsletter seems to be accomplishing much good. The numerous letters we receive from around the world regarding the Newsletters helpfulness are one indication of this.
If you share with us our belief that the Newsletter is a very worthwhile ministry, we urgently ask you to seriously consider sending us a donation. We are always struggling to obtain the funds to continue publication of the Newsletter.
If you are financially able, we would be extremely grateful to receive your donation -- whether it is small, large, or medium-sized! We thank all of you who have previously sent donations.
Some of you may know of possible benefactors who would be interested in helping a worthy cause. And we firmly believe that a ministry which offers an aid for spiritual growth to priests especially, but to others also, is a most worthy endeavor.
For your convenience, we have enclosed a self-addressed donation envelope.
Very importantly, we also ask for your prayers that we may obtain the funds necessary to continue publication of the Newsletter and that the Newsletter will be spiritually beneficial to its readers. We hope to continue to publish it four to six times a year. The number of issues will depend upon various factors. Thank you very much for your attention to our urgent plea.
(End of Letter written by Father Edward J. Carter S.J.)
Messenger: In this new newsletter we will begin with the Morning Offering telling about Father Carters death and then the prayers that Jesus gave to us to spread prayer chapters. The newsletter includes a most powerful extensive writing of Father Carters on Grace.
This newsletter can help change the face of the earth as people pray the Morning Offering and the prayers Jesus gave to Father Carter for the priests, the Church and the world, great grace can be released on the earth. Only Gods grace will help change the hearts.
Reaching the priests with this information is crucial in getting the prayer manual in the hands of the priests.
Father Laurentin recently did an article on Clearwater, Florida, which included the information about the Morning Offering and several messages I received from Mary. It was written in French. Also it included pictures of the site in Florida. He sent his regrets to me about Father Carters death.
We need help to do as Father Carter wished. He asked that this newsletter be put out in January.
He spent his very sick days after chemo helping to prepare this for this publication.
His birthday is January 15.
Father Carter was very upset because we struggled so much for funds to do the 20 page newsletter.
We still owe on the last newsletter. Father Carter wrote the article about money and told us to include a donation envelope.
God the Father was angry when we did not receive help for the 20 page newsletter.
Can you please help us?
The day after that, I received the letter from Father Laurentin and the magazine with the Clearwater, Florida, pictures and article. Father Laurentin wrote a letter of sympathy regarding Father Carters death.
Please help us.
Jesus gave me a strong message today to get the newsletter out immediately.
Please help us for all Father Carter did to help change your life.
I love you,
The Messenger
Here is a letter Father Carter received about the newsletter.
Excerpt from priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, Issue 4, 2000
Dear Father Carter,
For years I have received Shepherds of Christ Newsletter; I do not know who put me on your mailing list, but Im grateful to you both. Since I first began to receive the newsletter I have been assigned as the Director of Formation Advising for the Pontifical North American College in Rome.
I would like to know if it would be possible to make a bulk order so that our seminarians could benefit from the newsletter as well. I will make sure they are distributed to our seminarians. At present we have about 200 seminarians and student priests on our campus, all eager for good spiritual reading!
Please let me know if we can make an arrangement for the delivery of the newsletter here at the college.
Please keep our faculty and seminarians in your prayers.
Sincerely yours in Christ,Rev. J. Mark Williams

Guiding Light homily series — Reflect on the Word — Cycle B The Word leaves an impression on our souls. In my thoughts and reflections are born a more tangible understanding of these eternal concepts presented in the Gospels and the readings. Anyone can read a sentence, but not anyone can absorb it's true meaning. Truth, in this day and age, is almost a matter of opinion or individual entitlement. We believe that Christ's truth is our Roman Catholic Church. We, as priests, champion it's teachings; we are ambassadors for the Pope and Christ to those faces looking at us. We are the light by which our congregation reads to reflect upon real truth and we do it hand in hand. $15 |
Guiding Light homily series — Steadfast to the Son — Cycle A The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15 |
Guiding Light — Focusing on the Word — Cycle B At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15 |
Guiding Light — Feed My Soul — Cycle C In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15 |
Guiding Light — The Word Alive in Our Hearts. — Cycle A (partial) Homilies by the Reverend Joe Robinson given at St. Boniface Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a tremendous honor Fr. Joe has allowed us to share these great gifts with you – for greater holiness and knowing more and more about God. $10 |

Priestly Newsletter — 2000 #1 — CD. — Christ is Our Strength — Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. It is so beautiful. "This brief passage contains one of the greatest lessons of the spiritual life. As we progress along our spiritual journey, we become increasingly aware of how weak we are in our—selves, but how strong we are in Christ. To experience our weakness involves suffering. The degree and kind of suffering can vary. The suffering can include the experience of the classical dark night of the spirit as described by St. John of the Cross. One of the main purposes of the dark night is to make a person keenly aware of his or her helplessness without God." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10 |
