Christ the King
November 20, 2005INTRODUCTION – (Ez 14, 11–12, 15–17; I Cor 15, 20–26. 28; Mt 25, 31–46) There was an artist who wanted to create a statue of Christ the King. He started working on a clay model, picturing Christ with his arms upraised, his head back and a joyful expression on his face. It was a triumphant Christ, much like the picture of Christ St. Paul gives us in today’s second reading. But when the artist went to bed it started to rain and the moist air blowing in the window made the clay in his statue begin to sag. When the artist saw his work in the morning, Christ’s arms were down, his head was bowed, his shoulders drooped and the expression on his face looked sad. Our readings give us both images of Christ the king today. In the first reading he is the powerful Christ, acting as shepherd of his people caring for them. In the gospel he is our judge. But also in the gospel he identifies himself with the hungry and the thirsty, the stranger and the naked, the sick and imprisoned and he tells us “just as you did it for one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it for me.”
HOMILY – The lesson Jesus teaches us in today’s gospel has really been understood and accepted by most Christians. There was an article on the front page of the Catholic Telegraph in which Catholics were asked what teachings of the Church were personally “very important” to them. At the very top of the list 84% listed helping the poor as “very important.” The picture Jesus paints of the last judgment has deeply impacted most people when it comes to caring for others.
But I always wondered where worship of God fit in here. Isn’t that something that’s important too? Why didn’t Jesus mention that when he talked about the last judgment? Should we forget about prayer and worship and Mass and spend more time doing good for others? That question always puzzled me until I realized that Jesus was preaching to people who took their religious responsibilities seriously. In Jesus’ day a good Jew wouldn’t think of missing synagogue on the Sabbath. Jesus himself went to the synagogue each week, St. Luke tells us. Furthermore, St. Matthew was not writing his gospel for unbelievers but the Church, for a community of believers who gathered together each Sunday, the Lord’s Day, to celebrate the Eucharist in memory of the Lord Jesus and in union with him. Neither Jesus, nor Matthew in talking about how God will judge us had to stress the importance of keeping holy the Lord’s day, because their audience was already doing that. Instead, they had to stress to church going people that just going to church is not enough to be a good Christian. Remember there were two commandments Jesus gave us when he was asked what is the greatest commandment. In the early Church most people were aware of the first one (love God) and knew we owed God our worship and praise and thanksgiving, but they needed to be reminded of the second one (love your neighbor).
Today that seems to have flip-flopped. The same article in the Catholic Telegraph reported that many Catholics think they can be good Catholics without going to Mass every Sunday. The percentage of those who think Mass every Sunday is important ranges from a high of 60 % for those over 65 to just 15% for those in the 18–25 age bracket. After I read this report in the Catholic Telegraph I was struck by an interesting passage from the Book of Revelation. The passage described God’s people in heaven who were victorious over the forces of evil and they were singing a hymn to God. The words of their hymn were: “Who would dare refuse you honor, or the glory due your name, O Lord? Since you alone are holy, all nations shall come and worship in your
presence.” Worship is what too many people are missing in their spiritual lives. Worship is part of being a “good” Catholic. And for a good Catholic that worship is the Mass. Somewhere along the line, the third commandment has been forgotten. If Christ is our king do we not owe him honor and praise and thanksgiving? We’ll all get together with family and friends this Thursday and stuff ourselves and call that thanksgiving. And some will feel we’ve done a duty to God. If we’re satisfied with that, the Bible tells us: God’s not.
We live in a democracy. It’s far from perfect, but when I travel to other countries or read about the politics in other countries, I’m grateful to be here in the United States of America. Over two hundred years ago, our ancestors fought hard to be rid of having a king to rule over us. We want to make up our own rules. Our feast today reminds us there are limits to our ability to make our own rules and determine our own destiny. There are certain values that are absolute, that society cannot do away with. There is a layer of power above us that is higher than the president and the governors and the legislators. That power is God who has the authority
to tell us how to live and the things we must or must not do. When we honor Christ as our king, we’re not saying he’s a president we can vote out if we do not like what he tells us. When we honor him as our king we commit ourselves to faithfully following him, the only path that will lead to sharing in his glory and in his kingdom some day. Amen.
Transfiguration of the Lord
August 6, 2017INTRODUCTION – (Dn 7:9-10,13-14; 2 Pt1:16-19; Mt. 17:1-9); Our first reading is from the Book of Daniel. At the time it was written, about 165 years before Christ, the Greeks were pressuring the Jews to give up their faith in YHWH and join the pagan religions. The unknown author of Daniel is trying to assure God’s people that God’s law and God’s teachings will triumph in the end. That leads us to today’s first reading. Daniel is given a vision of this victory. The reading starts with a vision of God who is referred to as the Ancient One (implying he has existed from all eternity). One like a Son of Man received from the Ancient One dominion, glory and a kingship that would be everlasting. This is an important passage because Son of Man is one of the most frequently used titles Jesus used when he spoke about himself.
HOMILY – The transfiguration apparently is a onetime event in the life of Jesus – so unique that three gospels speak of it and Peter refers to it in one of his letters – which is the second reading for today. What is so unique about it? Jesus’ special and unique nature revealed itself on other occasions such as walking on water, calming a storm, healing the sick, raising the dead and feeding a group of a few thousand people in a miraculous way with five loaves and two fish. The transfiguration seems especially unique because it is a miracle that comes out of his very self – not to be repeated again until his resurrection.
I have always believed that the transfiguration happened to boost the Apostles’ faith as well as to strengthen Jesus’ faithfulness to the mission of his suffering which was rapidly approaching.
Recently a person asked me what God looked like. I told the person I did not know. He said “you’re supposed to know that kind of stuff.” God hasn’t appeared to me, but if we could see God, it would involve seeing him with our mind and heart. I think to see him with our eyes in the fullness of his glory would be too powerful for our senses and our body to endure. Today’s gospel gives us a hint of the glory that could not be seen in Jesus, except on this one occasion. Of course, his glory did shine more brightly after his resurrection.
What can we take with us from today’s feast? The first thing is the word of God regarding Jesus: “This is my beloved son: listen to him.” Listening to him presupposes that we take time to reflect on his teachings. If we never stop to listen, we will never learn the way he wants us to live. Second: occasionally, while you are praying, you may find yourself having what could be called a spiritual high.
This usually happens during prayer and I believe these high moments happen at various times in people’s lives. In those moments, we experience God’s love and care in an especially powerful way. Like Peter, we would like to hold on to that feeling forever. It may help our faith be stronger, or it may come to us to help us deal with what might be a very difficult time we’ve been having or that we are about to have. Treasure those moments. Thank God for them. Now, as we continue on with the Mass, let us thank God for the blessings we’ve been given and ask God’s blessings for the needs we have.
The Body and Blood of Christ
May 29, 2005HOMILY - (Dt 8:2-3,14-16; 1 Cor 10: 16-17; Jn 6:51-58) Memorial Day is a testimony to the many women and men who have paid a great price for our freedom and for the blessings we enjoy. Memorial Day is also a testimony to our short memories because if we didn’t have such occasions we could easily forget. And we don’t want to do that. I think one of the worst things we can do as an individual and as a nation is to take our blessings for granted.
This too is one reason Jesus gave us the Mass and told us “Do this in memory of me.” Today at Mass we celebrate the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. As always at Mass we remember all that Jesus did for us. However, our feast informs us that we do more than simply remember what Jesus did. At Mass we are mystically connected with the past and Christ is really present, not like he was 2000 years ago teaching and healing in Israel, but he is with us in his risen form. In his risen form we are not able to see him with our eyes. We can only know him by faith, but when we enter into the next life our spirit will know him even as he knows us now.
Because today’s mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ is based on faith, our only evidence is what Jesus told us. For this is what “faith” is, to accept something as true because of what someone told us. We cannot know it by any of our other senses, only by our sense of hearing. We hear Jesus say in today’s gospel: “the bread that I will give is my flesh…” And we hear his words at the Last Supper every time we say Mass: “This is my body, this is my blood.” And because we believe Jesus spoke truth and spoke with unique power, we believe what he said.
There are many ways to approach today’s mystery. One of my favorite ways is to think of it in terms of energy. Think of an acorn and an acorn sized stone. They might look similar, but one is full of life ready to break out and grow into a tree, and the other will never do anything. One has the energy of life within it and the other does not. We look at the host. It doesn’t look any different after the consecration than it did before, but a whole new energy replaced what was there before: a divine energy that promises: “Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” Another example can be different types of food. You can eat healthy food and it will nourish you and keep you healthy. You can eat junk food and eventually your health will suffer. Healthy food has vitamins and nutrients in it. Our body needs these things to stay healthy. I’ve never seen a vitamin. I’ve seen lots of vitamin pills and I take my share of them, but to see what an actual vitamin looks like, I guess I would need some kind of molecular microscope. But I know they’re in certain foods and they’re important. We can spend our lives feeding our mind and heart and spirit with junk, which like junk food is often more tempting, or we can feed ourselves with healthy things that require a little more discipline to choose. Jesus is giving us something healthy, but it requires a little more discipline than laying in bed on Sunday morning or watching something on TV or going to some sporting event.
One of the more recent statistics I’ve seen reports that a very high percent of young people believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, but a much lower percent say they believe they can be a good Catholic without attending Mass every Sunday. We all know we should eat healthy food, but somehow we think even if we don’t, we’ll still stay healthy. And I think it’s the same with the Eucharist.
I started thinking why people don’t come to Church, even though they say they believe in the Eucharist. They don’t like the sermons, they don’t like the music, they don’t like what some other priests have done, they don’t like some of the people they worship with, they don’t like the Church’s rules, or, and perhaps this is the biggest reason, there is laziness. Remember it’s one of the seven capital sins. It is not sinful because a person is too lazy to cut the grass or clean the house, but, to quote the old catechism: the sin lies in one’s “distaste for spiritual things because their attainment requires much labor.”
he third commandment requires us to give God our worship and praise each week, if only for an hour. The Church specifies this is the proper and perfect way to do it, to respond to our Lord’s invitation to come to his table: “Do this in memory of me.” If we want any proof that Jesus really wants us to believe in his real presence in the Eucharist, today’s gospel spells it out as clearly as possible. If we were to read on in John’s gospel, we would see that after Jesus said what he did, his listeners started drifting away. They said he was crazy. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” He didn’t call them back and say “you misunderstood me,” or “you’re taking me literally and I was speaking symbolically.” Instead he turned to the apostles and asked them “will you leave
me too?” It is a question for us also: “Will you leave me too?”In today’s feast the Church reminds us of the great gift Christ has given us, himself. What greater gift of love can a person give than their own selves? May we not take it for granted.

Mysteries of Light
The Baptism of Jesus
1. Matthew 3: 13-17Then Jesus appeared: he came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. John tried to dissuade him, with the words, ‘It is I who need baptism from you, and yet you come to me!’ But Jesus replied, ‘Leave it like this for the time being; it is fitting that we should, in this way, do all that uprightness demands.’ Then John gave in to him. And when Jesus had been baptised he at once came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. And suddenly there was a voice from heaven, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.’

10. A Prayer for Union with Jesus
Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul. Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.
I am Yours to possess. I am Yours to use. I want to be selfless and only exist in You. Help me to spoon out all that is me and be an empty vessel ready to be filled by You. Help me to die to myself and live only for You. Use me as You will. Let me never draw my attention back to myself. I only want to operate as You do, dwelling within me.
I am Yours, Lord. I want to have my life in You. I want to do the will of the Father. Give me the strength to put aside the world and let You operate my very being. Help me to act as You desire. Strengthen me against the distractions of the devil to take me from Your work.
When I worry, I have taken my focus off of You and placed it on myself. Help me not to give in to the promptings of others to change what in my heart You are making very clear to me. I worship You, I adore You and I love You. Come and dwell in me now.

The
Marriage at Cana
1.
John
2: 1-10
On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited. And they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the feast had all been used, and the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ Jesus said, ‘Woman, what do you want from me? My hour has not come yet.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water,’ and they filled them to the brim. Then he said to them, ‘Draw some out now and take it to the president of the feast.’ They did this; the president tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew—the president of the feast called the bridegroom and said, ‘Everyone serves good wine first and the worse wine when the guests are well wined; but you have kept the best wine till now.’

The
Kingdom of God
1. Matthew 25:31-46
The Last Judgement
‘When the Son of man comes in his glory, escorted by all the angels, then he will take his seat on his throne of glory. All nations will be assembled before him and he will separate people one from another as the shepherd separates sheep from goats. He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right hand, "Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take as your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you made me welcome, lacking clothes and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me." Then the upright will say to him in reply, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you? When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you?" And the King will answer, "In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me." Then he will say to those on his left hand, "Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you never gave me food, I was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink, I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, lacking clothes and you never clothed me, sick and in prison and you never visited me." Then it will be their turn to ask, "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or lacking clothes, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?" Then he will answer, "In truth I tell you, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me." And they will go away to eternal punishment, and the upright to eternal life.’
2.

heaven and earth.
3. “Just as you did it for
one of the least of these
my brothers and sisters,

4. 1 Corinthians 15:20-26
In fact, however, Christ has been raised from the dead, as the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. As it was by one man that death came, so through one man has come the resurrection of the dead. Just as all die in Adam, so in Christ all will be brought to life; but all of them in their proper order: Christ the first-fruits, and next, at his coming, those who belong to him. After that will come the end, when he will hand over the kingdom to God the Father, having abolished every principality, every ruling force and power. For he is to be king until he has made his enemies his footstool, and the last of the enemies to be done away with is death, for he has put all things under his feet.

8. Matthew 22: 34-40
The greatest commandment of all
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question, 36 ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’ Jesus said to him, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.’

The Transfiguration
1. Matthew 17:1-9
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as dazzling as light. And suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him. Then Peter spoke to Jesus. ‘Lord,’ he said, ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; if you want me to, I will make three shelters here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He was still speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and suddenly from the cloud there came a voice which said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.’ When they heard this, the disciples fell on their faces, overcome with fear. But Jesus came up and touched them, saying, ‘Stand up, do not be afraid.’ And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but Jesus.
As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, ‘Tell no one about this vision until the Son of man has risen from the dead.’

The Institution of the Eucharist
1. Matthew 26: 26-29
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to the disciples. ‘Take it and eat,’ he said, ‘this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you, for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. From now on, I tell you, I shall never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you in the kingdom of my Father.’

I Love You
April 13, 1994
Words of Jesus. Read before the Tabernacle.
Jesus: How, child, do I, Jesus, tell you I love you? You hold on to silly things when God is in your midst and is ardently loving you. I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I am writing to each precious child this day. I am on fire for love of you. I remain in the Eucharist to be with you with My ardent love. I did not want to leave My beloved ones at the Last Supper. I love you so, My dear and ardently loved children. I remain with you this day in the Blessed Sacrament, the same Jesus Who died a brutal death on the Cross.
Do you know I am truly present there? Do you know that God waits every day for you in the tabernacle? Do you comprehend even a minute amount of My love? You will never know of how I love you on earth.
I, Jesus, truly the Son of God, came to earth a man and suffered a brutal death for love of you. I love you so much! I remain with you this day. I long for your love. I want you to come and be with Me in front of the tabernacle. I wait, I yearn for you to come and whisper your love to Me. I am a person and I love you this day, with such an ardent on-fire love! No human could ever compare a speck to My love for you.
I wait, little ones, in the tabernacle. I wait for you to come and receive Me in Communion. I want you to want Me so much you cannot wait to come and receive Me. I want to be the love, the center of your life!
I am Jesus. I am the Son of God. I am writing to you this day. I want to possess your very soul and live in you. I have all you need, sweet ones. Oh, you are so blind! I long for your union with Me. I wrote the book of love. I instituted it, yet you go to the world for your love and do not even come to Me! Oh, I love you, little ones. Little ones, beloved of the Father, loved by the Holy Spirit, mothered by My very own mother! What more can I say? The rest is up to you!
I give you your will with such love and I want your love freely given. I am God. What do you think you could ever need that I do not give you? I am the Savior of this world. I am Jesus, the Son of God. I am waiting for you. I am longing for you. I am yearning for you. I am God. I have all you ever will need!
Surrender this life to Me. Pray My Prayer for Union with Me. I want to possess your soul and operate from your very being. I am Jesus. I am the Son of God. I am the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I am Who am. I died and rose on the third day.
Harken to My call, harken to My pleading. Spend your days in love with Me. Nothing matters unless it is rooted in Me and rooted in My love. I am the Son of God. I am the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I love you with the tenderest love. I am waiting this day for just you, My beloved one. Come to Me for I am the tenderest of all hearts. I am the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

7. A Prayer Before the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
Let me be a holy sacrifice and unite with God in the sacrament of His greatest love.
I want to be one in Him in this act of love, where He gives Himself to me and I give myself as a sacrifice to Him. Let me be a holy sacrifice as I become one with Him in this my act of greatest love to Him.
Let me unite with Him more, that I may more deeply love Him. May I help make reparation to His adorable Heart and the heart of His Mother, Mary. With greatest love, I offer myself to You and pray that You will accept my sacrifice of greatest love. I give myself to You and unite in Your gift of Yourself to me. Come and possess my soul.
Cleanse me, strengthen me, heal me. Dear Holy Spirit act in the heart of Mary to make me more and more like Jesus.
Father, I offer this my sacrifice, myself united to Jesus in the Holy Spirit to You. Help me to love God more deeply in this act of my greatest love.
Give me the grace to grow in my knowledge, love and service of You and for this to be my greatest participation in the Mass. Give me the greatest graces to love You so deeply in this Mass, You who are so worthy of my love.

Guiding Light homily series — Reflect on the Word — Cycle B The Word leaves an impression on our souls. In my thoughts and reflections are born a more tangible understanding of these eternal concepts presented in the Gospels and the readings. Anyone can read a sentence, but not anyone can absorb it's true meaning. Truth, in this day and age, is almost a matter of opinion or individual entitlement. We believe that Christ's truth is our Roman Catholic Church. We, as priests, champion it's teachings; we are ambassadors for the Pope and Christ to those faces looking at us. We are the light by which our congregation reads to reflect upon real truth and we do it hand in hand. $10 |
Guiding Light homily series — Steadfast to the Son — Cycle A The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $10 |
Guiding Light — Focusing on the Word — Cycle B At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $10 |
Guiding Light — Feed My Soul — Cycle C In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $10 |
