Excerpt from Response to God's Love by Fr. Edward Carter, S.J.
... In reference to Christianity, God himself is the ultimate mystery. Radically, God is completely other and transcendent, hidden from man in his inner life, unless he chooses to reveal himself. Let us briefly look at this inner life of God.
The Father, in a perfect act of self-expression, in a perfect act of knowing, generates his son. The Son, the Word, is, then, the immanent expression of God's fullness, the reflection of the Father. Likewise, from all eternity, the Father and the Son bring forth the Holy Spirit in a perfect act of loving.
At the destined moment in human history, God's self-expression, the Word, immersed himself into man's world. God's inner self-expression now had also become God's outer self-expression. Consequently, the mystery of God becomes the mystery of Christ. In Christ, God tells us about himself, about his inner life, about his plan of creation and redemption. He tells us how Father, Son, and Holy Spirit desire to dwell within us in the most intimate fashion, how they wish to share with us their own life through grace. All this he has accomplished and does accomplish through Christ.
R. The Eucharist is the most intimate
act when God gives Himself
to man.
God shares His life with us
through grace.
We say at Mass
Through Him, With Him and In Him
R. We offer ourselves to the Father united to
Jesus in the Holy Spirit, through
the powerful intercession
of the angels and saints.
Colossians 1: 24-28
It makes me happy to be suffering for you now, and in my own body to make up all the hardships that still have to be undergone by Christ for the sake of his body, the Church, of which I was made a servant with the responsibility towards you that God gave to me, that of completing God's message, the message which was a mystery hidden for generations and centuries and has now been revealed to his holy people. It was God's purpose to reveal to them how rich is the glory of this mystery among the gentiles; it is Christ among you, your hope of glory: this is the Christ we are proclaiming, admonishing and instructing everyone in all wisdom, to make everyone perfect in Christ.
R. The Mystery of the Christian life
is rooted in the Incarnation
The Mystery of Christ's life IN US!!
Everything the Father wishes to
tell us is summed up
in Jesus.
Jesus came, Jesus of Nazareth
and He lived here.
He taught us about the
mystery of God
He taught us about
the Word Incarnate
Hebrews 1: 1-2
At many moments in the past and by many means, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; but in our time, the final days, he has spoken to us in the person of his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things and through whom he made the ages.
R. Jesus (1) released us from the
dominion of sin
(2) elevated us to a new
level of existence
GRACE PERMEATES NATURE
The Christian is meant to be an expression
of the Christ-life
All of our experiences are made
more deeply human because
of Jesus.
Christ has come to perfect the
human and leading man to
graced fulfillment
The more like God we become
the more human we become.
We live in Christ
We have been given baptism
We have been incorporated
into the mystery of Christ.
The Mystery of Christ
is the Christ event
The Mystery of these events
are not past, but
are present in the
glorified Christ
We are limited here on earth
to time
Christ lives in us
We make Christ visible and
tangible
He lives in us
We live in union with Christ
Prayer for Union with Jesus
Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul. Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.
I am Yours to possess. I am Yours to use. I want to be selfless and only exist in You. Help me to spoon out all that is me and be an empty vessel ready to be filled by You. Help me to die to myself and live only for You. Use me as You will. Let me never draw my attention back to myself. I only want to operate as You do, dwelling within me.
I am Yours, Lord. I want to have my life in You. I want to do the will of the Father. Give me the strength to put aside the world and let You operate my very being. Help me to act as You desire. Strengthen me against the distractions of the devil to take me from Your work.
When I worry, I have taken my focus off of You and placed it on myself. Help me not to give in to the promptings of others to change what in my heart You are making very clear to me. I worship You, I adore You and I love You. Come and dwell in me now.

Cling to Me
May 13, 1993
Jesus: My dear child, if you stay close to Me, then I live in you and you live in Me. I am He Who created you and I love you with such an intensity that you will never know. My words are your truth. You must abide in My heart in all things. There is no room for doubt. My ways are steadfast, direct, and without error.
You must stay rooted in Me to ward off the power of the evil one. His grip is paralyzing and crippling. His power is stronger every day.
When you live in Me, I am in your heart and he has no power over Me. I am your God. I am your true lover. I want to protect you. I want to guard you from this force. Stay rooted firmly in Me and he will have no power.
I am He Who comforts you. My hand is upon you. Hold tight to Me, My child. My eyes are fixed right on you. You are My most precious child. I love you as no other can. My arms are about you. My tenderness surrounds you. My love is in your heart. You go not alone. I walk with you.
I share every aspect of your life with you. Cling to Me, feel My presence. It is warm and secure within your chest. There is no room for fear, for I cast out fear and bring you comfort and joy.

R. This is a privilege that the
Incarnation goes on
in us
We are the Body of Christ
We are to live the life, death
and resurrection in our
lives
Romans 6: 3-4
You cannot have forgotten that all of us, when we were baptised into Christ Jesus, were baptised into his death. So by our baptism into his death we were buried with him, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Fathers glorious power, we too should begin living a new life.
R. This life we have been given needs
nourishment
We have been given the
Eucharist,
the Scripture
Fr. Carter considered the Christian life
to celebrate this life
(1) Consider the Christian life as
Response to God's love
(a) God loves us
John 3: 16
For this is how God loved the world:
he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
may not perish
but may have eternal life.
(b) Jesus shows us His Heart
it is a symbol of
God's love for us
(2) Our Response to God's love
(a) Matthew 22: 34-40
Matthew 22:34-40
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question, 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?' Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'
(b) We give Him great love
We love Him
Shower Him with love
(3) Connection of the 3 loves
(a) Love of God
(b) Love of Other
(c) Love of Self
Genesis 1: 26-27
God said, Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild animals and all the creatures that creep along the ground.
God created man in the image of himself,
in the image of God he created him,
male and female he created them.
1 John 4: 19-21
Let us love, then, because he first loved us. Anyone who says 'I love God' and hates his brother, is a liar, since whoever does not love the brother whom he can see cannot love God whom he has not seen. Indeed this is the commandment we have received from him, that whoever loves God, must also love his brother.
R. All 3 loves go together
God made our neighbor in His
image and likeness
We can't hate our neighbor
if we are obeying God!!
We love because God first
loved us
God gives us a sharing in
His loving activity
The more we are united to God
the more we share in
His capacity to love
We must see the person at
their core existence!!
We are in the state of becoming.
The Church is in the state of becoming.
The World is in the state of becoming.
We participate in God's life
through grace.
