Today's Readings
Isaiah 5: 1-7
Let me sing my beloved
the song of my friend for his vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard
on a fertile hillside.
He dug it, cleared it of stones,
and planted it with red grapes.
In the middle he built a tower,
he hewed a press there too.
He expected it to yield fine grapes:
wild grapes were all it yielded. And now, citizens of Jerusalem
and people of Judah,
I ask you to judge between me
and my vineyard.
What more could I have done
for my vineyard
that I have not done?
Why, when I expected it
to yield fine grapes,
has it yielded wild ones?Very well, I shall tell you
what I am going to do to my vineyard:
I shall take away its hedge,
for it to be grazed on,
and knock down its wall,
for it to be trampled on.
I shall let it go to waste, unpruned, undug,
overgrown by brambles
and thorn–bushes,
and I shall command the clouds
to rain no rain on it.
Now, the vineyard of Yahweh Sabaoth
is the House of Israel,
and the people of Judah
the plant he cherished.
He expected fair judgement,
but found injustice,
uprightness, but found cries of distress.
Psalm 80: 9, 12-16, 19
you cleared a space for it,
it took root and filled the whole country. Why have you broken down its fences?
Every passer–by plucks its grapes,
boars from the forest tear at it,
wild beasts feed on it.God Sabaoth, come back, we pray,
look down from heaven and see,
visit this vine;
protect what your own hand has planted.
They have thrown it on the fire like dung,
the frown of your rebuke will destroy them.God Sabaoth, bring us back,
let your face shine on us and we shall be safe.
Philippians 4: 6-9
Never worry about anything; but tell God all your desires of every kind in prayer and petition shot through with gratitude, and the peace of God which is beyond our understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, let your minds be filled with everything that is true, everything that is honourable, everything that is upright and pure, everything that we love and admire—with whatever is good and praiseworthy. Keep doing everything you learnt from me and were told by me and have heard or seen me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
Matthew 21: 33-43
‘Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced it round, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, killed another and stoned a third. Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them thinking, “They will respect my son.” But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance.” So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ They answered, ‘He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him at the proper time.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures:
The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this is the Lord’s doing
and we marvel at it?‘I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given
R. Fr. Joe said
Sometimes we think we are a big
wheel until somebody takes us down
a couple of notches —
Isaiah and the Gospel reminds us God
is in charge —
Jesus is talking to the chief priest and
elders — these were the ones
who would have our Lord
crucified —
Now in the Gospel they are talking
about killing the son —
they threw the son out of the
vineyard and killed him —
Holiness is a fruit —
They did not act as they should
when the owner was far
off —
If they thought the owner died
then they treated the son worse
because he would inherit the
vineyard —
God came to establish a Kingdom
of peace, love and joy —
People thought the Kingdom would
be established in a very
short time —
But we are here to bear fruit
for the Kingdom —
to grow in holiness ourselves —
All of us — not only the leaders
are to do what God calls
us to —
Adam and Eve — didn't want to
recognize God was in charge —
They wanted to be in charge and they
lost paradise —
Confiteor
I confess to Almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore, I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the saints, to pray to the Lord our God for me.
Sing: Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God

The 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 5, 2008
INTRODUCTION: (Isaiah 5,1-7; Matthew 21,33-43) Most of us know how much work is involved in caring for a garden. Just imagine how much work is involved with setting up an entire vineyard, which is a full time business. Isaiah describes some of what was involved in today’s first reading. If we wonder why there needed to be a watchtower in the vineyard, it was needed, both day and night, to protect the grapes from thieves and predators, especially during harvest time. Apparently Isaiah was a musician as well as a talented poet. As he sang his song we can imagine the shock his audience felt when they discovered they were the vineyard he was singing about. From history we know Isaiah’s prophecy literally came to be true when the Assyrian invasion came and much of the land was laid waste.
HOMILY: As I reflected on today’s readings about vineyards, I thought back about 40 years to a day when I was traveling with my sister, brother, and sister-in-law in Germany. My brother and I had a great love for Mosel wine at that time and we spent the whole day driving down along the Mosel river, just looking at vineyards. At the end of the day we stopped in a little place to get something to eat. We were tired and thirsty and ordered some of the local wine. It was cold and delicious and, since we hadn’t had much to eat or drink that day, it hit us hard. We both started laughing at the silliest things. My sister (a nun) was much irritated at the two of us, which made us laugh all the more. I guess I wasn’t very sensitive to my sister at the time, but my brother and I sure had a fun time.
At the time I just enjoyed the benefits of all those vineyards and hardly thought of all the work involved in making it possible for us to enjoy ourselves. Maintaining a vineyard is a year round operation, caring for the vines, pruning them for the best yield, protecting them from anything or anyone who might destroy them, pressing the grapes, storing the juice until it ferments, etc., etc. Vineyards were abundant in Judea at the time of Jesus, so it’s natural Jesus would base his story on something his listeners were very familiar with. Jews used lots of wine, in liturgies and at meals, yet they always respected it. Jews have one of the lowest rates of alcoholism among all nationalities. Today we have two stories about vineyards.
In the first story from Isaiah, over 700 years before Christ, the vineyard represented the people of Israel who were a great disappointment to God. God made them his own special people and blessed them abundantly; yet they turned their back on him and the commandments he had given them. Their lives represented sour grapes after all God had done for them.
In the second story from the gospel, the vineyard represents God’s people, but it is the religious leaders of Jesus’ time who are taken to task. They ignored their responsibilities to God and controlled and led God’s people, not in God’s ways, but to protect their own interests. We can see the first set of servants who were sent to the tenant farmers as representing the earlier prophets like Amos, Hosea, Isaiah and the second group of servants representing the later prophets like Jeremiah and Ezekiel and others. The son who was put to death was Jesus, of course. I wonder if the parable would apply to the leaders of our modern culture who tell us God is like some big jolly Santa Claus who’s going to give to every person everything they want to be happy when they die. This is the popular theology - everyone is going to heaven no matter how they lived. Whether they prayed and went to church or not, whether they hurt or cheated others; none of that matters. But that’s not what Jesus taught us. The ten commandments are still in force.
Today is Pro-Life Sunday. One of the worst sins of our culture is abortion, the killing of an innocent, defenseless human life. People rationalize all over the place about this issue, but it is a fact that innocent human life is deliberately being destroyed, mostly so as not to embarrass or inconvenience the person who is carrying that life. People who were not planning to conceive often are looking for help to know what to do. Pro-life programs offer that help. Special envelopes are in the pews today to offer support to pro-life programs and organizations. There is an article in today’s bulletin that challenges us to realize that abortion is not the only way our culture does not support life and how we can become in all ways more the kind of person God calls us to be in today’s second reading: true, honorable, pure, just and gracious in whatever we do. Amen.
Sing: Gift of Finest Wheat
R. Jesus uses the parable of the vineyard
Fr. Joe says "Can you imagine how much
is involved setting up a vineyard."
We see a garden and grapes —
We see Adam and Eve and they ate the forbidden
fruit —
They choose themselves over God —
God calls us to the building of His Kingdom —
We are to put this first in our lives —
Sing: Valleys of Green
Sing: Come with Me into the Field
R. In the vineyard there was a watchtower to prevent
thieves and predators from coming day or
night and stealing the grapes —
Especially during the harvest time
the grapes where guarded —
We pray God guards us from the evil one,
from those tempting us to go against God's
will for us — become a rival to God's will —
We are the vineyard —
God is the Divine Dresser —
We are to bear fruit that lasts —
Anyone who cares for plants - knows
they must be pruned, cut back and cared
for — If they are neglected or treated 'sheepishly'
then look like they are uncared for —
God is the Divine Dresser - the Good Shepherd
He cares for us — He cares for the sheep —
He wants to protect us from harm from
anything that can hurt our soul —
our eternal life with Him —
We can say 'no' and be a rival to what
God wants for us — or we can follow in
the footsteps of Jesus —
We can see that in the Gospel when
they take the son out and kill him it
is referring to what would be done
to Christ —
There were lots of vineyards in Judea
at the time of Jesus
Sing: We Have Been Told
R. Fr. Joe says that the vineyard in Isaiah
represents the people of Israel over
700 years before Christ and they were
a disappointment to God —
God loved His people and wanted their
obedience and all through salvation history
in the Old Testament, we see the people rebelling
against God and God letting them suffer —
after they would suffer tremendously they
would turn back to obeying God. The Jews
were important for they believed in the one
true God — even though idolatry would creep
in they maintained their belief in the
one true God for the most part —
God chose them as His special
people and He blessed them.
But they would turn their back on
Him and the commandments and
He would work to bring them
back —
The leaders of the people of God in the
Gospel Fr. Joe said controlled the
people for their own interest —
"and led the people, not in
God's ways, but to protect
their own interests."
We see God sent prophets like
Jeremiah and Ezekiel to the
vineyard and what they did
to them —
Sing: Hosea
R. The son they put to death was
Jesus.
We must obey the commandments
of God and prepare ourselves
spiritually —
God calls us to be holy, pure,
kind, just —
Mary is the perfect handmaid of
the Lord —
Mary is our model —
Sing: Holy Is His Name
R. Say Magnificat —
Luke 1: 46-55
And Mary said:
My soul proclaims
the greatness of the Lord
and my spirit rejoices
in God my Saviour;
because he has looked upon
the humiliation of his servant.
Yes, from now onwards
all generations will call me blessed,
for the Almighty
has done great things for me.
Holy is his name,
and his faithful love extends age after age
to those who fear him.
He has used the power of his arm,
he has routed the arrogant of heart.
He has pulled down princes
from their thrones
and raised high the lowly.
He has filled the starving with good things,
sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the help
of Israel his servant,
mindful of his faithful love
—according to the promise
he made to our ancestors—
of his mercy to Abraham
and to his descendants for ever.
R. Oh Most Holy Heart of Jesus,
help us to be holy,
shower Your blessings abundantly
on us —
on our relatives and friends —
help us at death —
deliver the souls in purgatory —
help our hearts to be hearts
of love —
Oh Most Holy Heart of Jesus,
fountain of every blessing,
We love You
We adore You
We give ourselves to You —
Help us to be obedient to Your will for us —
Keep us from danger

Guiding Light - Steadfast to the Son
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle A of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light homily series - Steadfast to the Son - Cycle A — The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15
Guiding Light - Feed My Soul
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle C of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light - Feed My Soul - Cycle C — In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15
Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light - Focusing on the Word - Cycle B — At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15
