31st Sunday in Ordinary Time - Cycle A
Malachi 1: 14b—2: 2, 8-10
Cursed be the rogue who has a male in his flock but pays his vow by sacrificing a blemished animal to me! For I am a great king, says Yahweh Sabaoth, and among the nations my name inspires awe.'
'And now, priests, this commandment is for you. If you will not listen, if you will not sincerely resolve to glorify my name, says Yahweh Sabaoth, I shall certainly lay a curse on you and I shall curse your blessing. Indeed I will lay a curse, for none of you makes this resolve.
But you yourselves have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to lapse by your teaching. Since you have destroyed the covenant of Levi, says Yahweh Sabaoth, so I in my turn have made you contemptible and vile to the whole people, for not having kept my ways and for being partial in applying the law.
'Is there not one Father of us all? Did not one God create us? Why, then, do we break faith with one another, profaning the covenant of our ancestors?
Psalm 131: 1-3
Yahweh, my heart is not haughty,
I do not set my sights too high.
I have taken no part in great affairs,
in wonders beyond my scope.
No, I hold myself in quiet and silence,
like a little child in its mother’s arms,
like a little child, so I keep myself.
Let Israel hope in Yahweh
henceforth and for ever.
1 Thessalonians 2: 7-9, 13
when we could have imposed ourselves on you with full weight, as apostles of Christ.
Instead, we lived unassumingly among you. Like a mother feeding and looking after her children, we felt so devoted to you, that we would have been happy to share with you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, so dear had you become. You remember, brothers, with what unsparing energy we used to work, slaving night and day so as not to be a burden on any one of you while we were proclaiming the gospel of God to you.
Another reason why we continually thank God for you is that as soon as you heard the word that we brought you as God's message, you welcomed it for what it really is, not the word of any human being, but God's word, a power that is working among you believers.
Matthew 23: 1-12
Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses. You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, since they do not practise what they preach. They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people’s shoulders, but will they lift a finger to move them? Not they! Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels, like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues, being greeted respectfully in the market squares and having people call them Rabbi.
‘You, however, must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and you are all brothers. You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor must you allow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Anyone who raises himself up will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be raised up.
31st Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 3, 2002
– (Malachi 1:14b-2:2b, 8-10, 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13, Matthew 23:1-12) Malachi was a real fire and brimstone prophet who lived about 400 years before Christ. He didn’t write much, but what he wrote had a real punch. As the book of Malachi begins, he condemns the priests of his day for offering sacrifices unworthy of God, animals that were blind, lame and sick – the kind of animals the owner would have gotten rid of anyway. He said offer that to your governor and see if he would be pleased. Probably the one who made the offering also handed the priest a little bribe to sacrifice the sick animal, since the law commanded only perfect offerings were to be used in sacrifice. Also, the priests were causing people to sin by not giving true teachings. They told people things such as “everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them.” Our first reading chastises these unfaithful priests, but it moves on to admonish the people who were unfaithful to God’s covenant through sins of adultery, dishonesty and injustice.INTRODUCTION
HOMILY
– If you think that our readings today are readings that we religious leaders need to reflect on, you are right. But in some ways, they contain lessons for anyone who calls himself or herself a Christian. My homily today consists of two or three different thoughts that occurred to me as I read today’s scriptures. Jesus in the gospel is condemning phoniness. One of my friends who is a truly spiritual person said to me the other day that someone told her she was a phony. She felt hurt by the comment. I told her we’re all phonies to some extent in that we all fail at times to live up to our ideals, our values and our principles. The important thing is that we’re honest with ourselves, that we recognize when we’re being phony and make every effort to be better. Part of being honest means being open to feedback others give us about ourselves, no matter who says it or whether we like it or not. Whenever a person says something to me that hurts, I try to examine it to see if there is any truth in what was said and if there was, I try to benefit from it. Jesus, while he condemned the Pharisees and scribes for their phoniness, told the people they should follow what they say, because the scribes and Pharisees were speaking truth as they taught God’s word, even though they were not living it.
Sometimes we have to teach others what’s right or wrong, while we’re not so perfect ourselves. But we have to realize we teach not only by what we say. I heard a story the other day about a father who punished one of his children for smoking and using bad language. But he smoked and used bad language himself. He was right in trying to guide his child correctly, but he will probably not be very effective. Children learn more from what they see than from what they hear.
On a slightly different topic: one of the frequent excuses people use who do not go to church is that they don’t want to be with all those phonies. Why should a person deprive themselves of the graces of the Mass because of what they judge someone else to be or to do? I have talked to people who have quit going to church since the scandal of priest sexual abuse. There is no excuse for what some priests have done, but that doesn’t mean all priests are bad, or that going to church now has no value.
On the other hand, we have to keep remembering that any of us who call ourselves Christians can lead people toward Christ or away from him by our lives. Mahatma Gandhi put it very forcefully when he said: “I like your Christ, but I don’t like you Christians because you Christians are so unlike your Christ.” For better or for worse it’s not just priests but all of us who show the face of Christ to others.
Another idea I would like to consider is Jesus statement “call no man ‘father’.” You know sometimes Jesus sometimes uses figurative language to make a point. If Jesus intended us to take him literally we could not refer to our own father as “father.” Nor should the gospels refer to anyone as being the father of anyone else. So when Jesus said “you have but one Father in heaven” it reminds us who is the origin of all life and it reminds all of us that, although we may have a certain amount of authority over others, we too are under authority ourselves, under the authority of God.
We have to know the scriptures well to know what Jesus wants us to take literally and what not. We know for certain he does want us to take literally his words about the Eucharist: “This is my body ” and “this is my blood.” As we celebrate this sacrament that Christ gave us, we admit we are not perfect and that we are sinners, and we ask the Lord to help us in uniting us with himself to better live up to what he expects of us. Amen.

Guiding Light - Steadfast to the Son
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle A of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light homily series - Steadfast to the Son - Cycle A — The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15
Guiding Light - Feed My Soul
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle C of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light - Feed My Soul - Cycle C — In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15
Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light - Focusing on the Word - Cycle B — At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15
Guiding Light - The Word Alive in Our Hearts
Inspiring Homilies covering partial year of Cycle A by Fr. Joe Robinson
$ 5.00 plus postageGuiding Light - The Word Alive in Our Hearts. - Cycle A (partial) — Homilies by the Reverend Joe Robinson given at St. Boniface Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a tremendous honor Fr. Joe has allowed us to share these great gifts with you – for greater holiness and knowing more and more about God. $10
