Sorrowful Mysteries

The Agony in the Garden

1. Luke 22: 39-46

The Mount of Olives

He then left to make his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples following. When he reached the place he said to them, ‘Pray not to be put to the test.’

    Then he withdrew from them, about a stone’s throw away, and knelt down and prayed. ‘Father,’ he said, ‘if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine.’ Then an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength. In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. When he rose from prayer he went to the disciples and found them sleeping for sheer grief. And he said to them, ‘Why are you asleep? Get up and pray not to be put to the test.’

2. We live the life, death and resurrection of Christ in our lives.
3. We as the baptized are to seek a supernatural life.
4. We were created in the image and likeness of Jesus, we are to grow in that image and likeness.
5. Jesus came He showed us the way.
6. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
7. Life is in Him.
8. Jesus saw before Him all the sins of the human race in the Garden.
9. Sin offends God, Jesus paid for our sins.
10. Jesus obeyed the Father’s will, His anguish was so great Jesus sweat blood.
 

The Scourging at the Pillar

1. Luke 23: 15-19, 22

...As you can see, the man has done nothing that deserves death, so I shall have him flogged and then let him go.' But as one man they howled, 'Away with him! Give us Barabbas!' (This man had been thrown into prison because of a riot in the city and murder.)

And for the third time he spoke to them, 'But what harm has this man done? I have found no case against him that deserves death, so I shall have him flogged and then let him go.'

2. Jesus paid for our sins.
3. When we unite our sufferings with Jesus, when others sin against us, we can help bring down great grace identifying with Jesus.
4. The more we meditate on the mysteries of the rosary, the more we live the lives of Jesus and Mary in our lives.
5. The more we know the scriptures the more we know God.
6. To not know the scriptures is to not know Jesus.
    Jesus is the Word.
7. Come to me Lord and possess my soul.
8. Come into my heart and permeate my soul.
    What is in our heart?
    What is in our heart is what counts.
9. See Jesus whipped at the pillar for our sins. His flesh was torn, His body beaten raw.
10. The devil is mean, he wants to make souls suffer.
 

The Crowning with Thorns

1. Matthew 27: 27-31

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus with them into the Praetorium and collected the whole cohort round him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet cloak round him, and having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on his head and placed a reed in his right hand. To make fun of him they knelt to him saying, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head with it. And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the cloak and dressed him in his own clothes and led him away to crucifixion. 

2. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, You taught us surrender during your bitter passion.
3. The soldiers who crowned Jesus with thorns and mocked Jesus, hated Jesus.
4. Jesus offered no resistance to the men who beat him.
5. Jesus was the innocent lamb led to the slaughter.
6. These men spit on Jesus, gave Him a dirty purple robe they put on His wounds, and pounded into His head a crown of thorns.
7. Jesus did not fight them. Jesus surrendered to their ugly treatment. Jesus teaches us about surrender.
8. Many times in our lives we must surrender. Satan wants to make right - wrong and wrong - right. Satan is argumentative. Look at Jesus as they crown Him with thorns and spit on Him and mock Him. Jesus is a little innocent lamb lead to the slaughter.
8. Jesus teaches us not to argue with those that want to prove right is wrong just for an argument, many times we can resist this.
9. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, I am sorry for my sins, thank You for loving me and paying the price for my sins.
10. I love You Jesus.
 

The Carrying of the Cross

1. Luke 23:26-31

As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus. Large numbers of people followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather for yourselves and for your children. For look, the days are surely coming when people will say, "Blessed are those who are barren, the wombs that have never borne children, the breasts that have never suckled!" Then they will begin to say to the mountains, "Fall on us!"; to the hills, "Cover us!" For if this is what is done to green wood, what will be done when the wood is dry?'

2. Many carry heavy crosses in relationships where one is persecuted by their spouse, friend, significant other and children are hurt.
3. See Jesus carry the heavy cross laden with the sins of the world and how Jesus suffered so to do it.
4. Now look at many who carry heavy crosses from a spouse who has hurt and persecuted them and they watch their innocent children suffer so much.
5. We can identify others sinning against us when it is so hard with Jesus carrying our sins, and the sins of the human race on His back.
6. Great grace can be outpoured uniting our sufferings to Jesus and the Mass.
7. Suffering is redemptive.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the side of Christ wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
O good Jesus, hear me
Within Thy wounds hide me
Permit me not to be separated from Thee
From the wicked foe defend me
at the hour of my death call me
and bid me come to Thee
That with Thy saints I may praise Thee
For ever and ever. Amen.

The Crucifixion

1. Mark 15: 24-38

Then they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots to decide what each should get. It was the third hour when they crucified him. The inscription giving the charge against him read, ‘The King of the Jews’. And they crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and one on his left.

The passers–by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, ‘Aha! So you would destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days! Then save yourself; come down from the cross!’ The chief priests and the scribes mocked him among themselves in the same way with the words, ‘He saved others, he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, for us to see it and believe.’ Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.

When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ When some of those who stood by heard this, they said, ‘Listen, he is calling on Elijah.’ Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink saying, ‘Wait! And see if Elijah will come to take him down.’ But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.

5. Mary’s Message - from the Rosary of August 27, 1996

Mary:  I stood beneath the cross of my Son, and my Heart was in such pain for I saw Him before my eyes. I saw Him covered with blood. I saw Him die. My Heart, my children, my Heart to watch my Son, but my Heart, my Heart, how I suffered for my little children of the world that give in to this world and give up the love of my Son. O my little children of light, I give you this message. Carry this light into the darkness for your Mother Mary, for I stood beneath the cross and I cried. I cried for the little ones. I cried for the young ones, the ones that do not care and will lose their souls. How do I make you see for you will not listen to me? What can I do? I come. I appear. I beg. I plead. I give you these gifts from my Son, and you reject me. I do not deliver messages very often anymore for I have been ignored. The message is the same. You do not read the messages I have given to you. Please help me. Help the little children. I appear. I appear. I appear, and I am ignored. I stood beneath the cross, and I cried. I cried, and my Heart was in such anguish for my little children, for I am searching for them this day as I searched for the Child Jesus. Please, please help me. I cannot hold back the hand of my Son any longer. I am Mary, your Mother. I ask you to help my children. You are my children of light. end of Mary's Message

6. Jesus held nothing back, He gave His all.
7. Jesus gave the last beat of His Heart.
8. Jesus gave the last drop of His blood.
9. Jesus did the will of the Father.
10. Jesus' love is burning and on fire for us.
    Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in Thee.
