Mysteries of Light

Baptism in the Jordan

1. Matthew 3: 16-17

    And when Jesus had been baptised he at once came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. And suddenly there was a voice from heaven, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.’

We, through our incorporation into Christ which occurs at Baptism, are meant to relive the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

It is not sufficient, however, that we be incorporated into Christ through Baptism. All forms of life require nourishment. So, too, our life in Christ must be continually nourished. How can we continually keep in contact with Christ? There are various ways. We contact Christ in a most special way through the liturgy, above all in the Eucharistic liturgy.

We have already spoken of how we are incorporated into Christ at Baptism. Now we shall speak of the life which comes to us in Baptism in terms of consecration:

To consecrate means to make sacred, to make holy. Only God can make a being holy. So to speak of our consecration is to speak of God's activity in making us holy, His activity of giving us a share in His own holiness. At Baptism we receive a share in God's life, a share in His holiness. Christ is the Mediator of this grace life. We are baptized into Christ, into His death and resurrection. In Baptism we become holy by sharing in the holiness of Christ. We become consecrated, sealed with the divine holiness. We belong to the Father, through Christ, in the Holy Spirit.

On our part, we must respond to God's consecration of us. We must live out the consecration of Baptism. We must realize what God has done for us in Christ and live according to this awareness. We need to live the life of holiness and grow in it. In other words, we must develop the life of grace, the Christ-life.

What God has done for us in Christ involves Mary. God has given us a Christ-life, our life of grace, and Mary is the Mother of this Christ-life. Consequently, living out our life of consecration to God-living out the Christ-life-includes allowing Mary to increasingly be the Mother of our Christ-life.

My hour has not come yet.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water,’ and they filled them to the brim. Then he said to them, ‘Draw some out now and take it to the president of the feast.’ They did this; the president tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew—the president of the feast called the bridegroom and said, ‘Everyone serves good wine first and the worse wine when the guests are well wined; but you have kept the best wine till now.’ 

2. John 19: 25-27

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

In giving Mary to the disciple, Jesus has also given her to each of us. Behold, then, one of God's greatest gifts to us—Mary as our spiritual mother.

As Mary cooperated with the Holy Spirit in first giving Christ to the world, so she continues to work with the Spirit in giving Jesus to each of us. Under God, Mary gives us our life of grace, our Christ-life. With her maternal love she protects and nourishes this life. Mary's desire for us is that we continue to grow in Christ, that increasingly we experience transformation in Him. Her overwhelming love for us, then, is evident.

We manifest our love for Mary by committing ourselves to her maternal, loving care. Let us commit ourselves to Mary regarding every aspect of our life in Christ. When we are experiencing joy, let us go to Mary. Let us share our happiness with her. Let us ask for her assistance so that we may use these times of joy according to God's designs. On the other hand, when we feel burdened with anxiety and worry, when fear makes us feel so weak and helpless, when failure and discouragement seem almost to crush us—at these times let us also look to Mary. Let us ask her to comfort us, to strengthen us. Let us further seek out Mary when we are aglow with enthusiasm, when we feel so completely permeated with dreams and desires to do great things for Christ and the world. Let us ask our mother to help us to channel this enthusiasm in a way which best serves the interests of Christ's kingdom.

One of the grandest forms of love we can show for someone is that of friendship. One of its beauties is that it is available to persons of all ages and all vocations. Each of us belongs to a particular state of life and gives and receive love according to the basic dictates of that special vocation. Single and married people in the world, religious, clergy—all of us are meant to love and be loved. Although many of the experiences of love are the same for all, others are indigenous to the particular state of life in question. For example, the celibate cleric is closed off from the experience peculiar to married love just as man and wife, in turn, are not exposed to the pains and joys of celibate love. However, one of the common experiences of love we can all share is that of friendship.

In the course of our daily lives we deal with many people, and some of these we meet rather regularly. We can thus establish amicable relationships with a number of people. We can develop many friends in the process. Deep friendship, however, friendship in the stricter sense of the word, is another matter. For various reasons it seems we establish this type of relationship with only a relatively small number of individuals. Whatever may be the degree and kind of friendship, it is a special gift of God. It indeed plays a treasured role in the Christian life. Christ Himself has shown us this; He, too, had friends, such as Lazarus, Martha, and Mary.

What is friendship, this special, close friendship? It is a mutual self-giving in love. Through this gift of self, friends desire to promote the good of each other. In one's love for a friend, he or she desires that this person becomes everything the friend can become according to God's designs. Through the love of friendship we give ourselves in a very direct, personal, and intimate manner to help achieve this growth.

   Celibacy lived for the sake of the kingdom of God is an important aspect of the Church's life. The fact that our times have witnessed a decrease in the number of celibates does not detract from the fact that celibacy has always been, and is, a powerful force in the life of the Christian community.

   Jesus, the founder of Christianity, lived a celibate existence. There have always been those within the Church who have been willing to renounce the great good which is marriage in order to continue this celibate witness.

   Committed celibacy is a very meaningful sign pointing to transcendent values. By renouncing one of life's great gifts—marriage—committed celibacy makes a statement to all who would listen that there is something beyond the visible and the tangible. Celibacy is a forceful reminder that there is something beyond marriage and all the other tangible goods associated with life upon this earth. Committed celibacy, then, is a witness to the transcendent dimension of our life of grace in Christ. It is a sign with both present and eschatological dimensions. It points to both the invisible life of grace as lived here below, and to the eschatological fulfillment of that Christ-life in eternity.

   The celibate enjoys a certain freedom that the married person does not enjoy. This freedom is another of celibacy's values. A married person must always be aware of his or her obligations to spouse and children. God intends such a person to render a service to Church and world which is compatible with these obligations. Inevitably, this puts certain limitations upon the apostolic—the ministerial—activities of the married person. Celibate freedom, then, is a very significant value in the life of the Church, and the long list of achievements by celibates throughout the history of the Church gives undeniable testimony to this fact.

   Celibacy, however, has its own set of restrictions. We must recognize that both celibacy and marriage have limitations attached to them as these vocations make their particular contributions in the work of the Church. They both are life-forms of Christian love, although in different ways. The important thing is for a person to decide which state God intends for him or her. And that state is the one in which the person thinks he or she can best love God and neighbor.

Kingdom of God

‘Look, the days are coming, Yahweh declares, when I shall make a new covenant with the House of Israel (and the House of Judah), but not like the covenant I made with their ancestors the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of Egypt, a covenant which they broke, even though I was their Master, Yahweh declares. No, this is the covenant I shall make with the House of Israel when those days have come, Yahweh declares. Within them I shall plant my Law, writing it on their hearts. Then I shall be their God and they will be my people. There will be no further need for everyone to teach neighbour or brother, saying, "Learn to know Yahweh!" No, they will all know me, from the least to the greatest, Yahweh declares, since I shall forgive their guilt and never more call their sin to mind.’

It was the Day of Preparation, and to avoid the bodies’ remaining on the cross during the Sabbath—since that Sabbath was a day of special solemnity—the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away. Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with him and then of the other. When they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water. This is the evidence of one who saw it—true evidence, and he knows that what he says is true—and he gives it so that you may believe as well. Because all this happened to fulfil the words of scripture: 

    Not one bone of his will be broken; 

and again, in another place scripture says: 

    They will look to the one 
        whom they have pierced.

He hung upon a cross on a hill called Calvary. Death was near. How much Jesus had already suffered! He had been brutally scourged. Much of His sacred body was a bloody, open wound. He had been derisively crowned with thorns. In a terribly weakened condition, He carried the heavy cross to the hill of Golgotha. There He was stripped of His garments and mercilessly nailed to the cross. Try to imagine the excruciating pain Jesus suffered as the nails penetrated His sacred hands and feet! After all this brutal and agonizing suffering-of body and spirit-Jesus finally died.

Transfiguration

1.

Growth in the spiritual life requires that we grow in spiritual freedom. This freedom consists in striving to relate to all reality according to God's will. The following excerpt addresses itself to this important issue of spiritual freedom: "The apostles who experienced the transfiguration were obviously not expected to close their eyes to the beauty of the experience. (To do so would be to turn their backs on a wonderful gift of God; more than that, it could be an act of ingratitude.) But, on the other hand, neither were they called to set up tents there. Instead, they were expected through this experience of God to be free to carry the experience with them and go out into the unknown future, even to Jerusalem. So, other questions we are asked to grapple with by our spiritual guides are: Are we truly grateful for the people and things God has given to us to enjoy in our lives? Are we also willing to let go of them rather than to try to possess, control, or idolize them?²

And He did it all for you! Yes, you can truly say that Jesus did it all for you. I can say that Jesus did it all for me. He suffered and died for the whole human race, but He did it in a way which makes it true to say He also did it for each individual. When He was undergoing all the brutal and horrible suffering, He knew you and He knew me by name. He was loving each of us with the most tender, and tremendous, and unique love! He gave the last drop of His precious blood for you individually and for me individually!

Let us always thank Mary that she is the Mother of each of us according to each one's uniqueness. I can truly say that Mary is my Mother in an unrepeatable way, and you can truly say that she is your Mother in an unrepeatable way. Realizing what a great and unique love Mary has for each of us, what reason could we ever have for not always going to her? What reason could we ever have for not asking her to take us as her beloved children and to hold us close to her maternal and Immaculate Heart where we always experience the love, the warmth, the tenderness of this magnificent Mother?

Then Peter spoke to Jesus. ‘Lord,’ he said, ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; if you want me to, I will make three shelters here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He was still speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and suddenly from the cloud there came a voice which said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.’ When they heard this, the disciples fell on their faces, overcome with fear. But Jesus came up and touched them, saying, ‘Stand up, do not be afraid.’ And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but Jesus. 

5. 2 Peter 1: 16-18          

    When we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not slavishly repeating cleverly invented myths; no, we had seen his majesty with our own eyes. He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when a voice came to him from the transcendent Glory, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.  We ourselves heard this voice from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.

Jesus:  "My beloved friend, tell My people to pray daily to the Holy Spirit. They are to pray for an increase in His gifts. My people must realize that the Holy Spirit comes to transform them. The Spirit desires to transform you more and more according to My image. Those who are docile to His touch become increasingly shaped in My likeness. He performs this marvel within Mary's Immaculate Heart. The more one dwells in My Mother's Heart, the more active are the workings of the Spirit. The Spirit leads Mary to place you within My own Heart. In both Our Hearts, then, your transformation continues. The more you are formed after My own Heart, the more I lead you to the bosom of My Father. Tell My people all this. Tell them to pray daily for a greater appreciation of these wondrous gifts. I am Lord and Master. All who come to My Heart will be on fire to receive the gifts of the Spirit in ever greater measure! I love and bless My people!"

The owner’s labourers went to him and said, "Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? If so, where does the darnel come from?" He said to them, "Some enemy has done this." And the labourers said, "Do you want us to go and weed it out?" But he said, "No, because when you weed out the darnel you might pull up the wheat with it. Let them both grow till the harvest; and at harvest time I shall say to the reapers: First collect the darnel and tie it in bundles to be burnt, then gather the wheat into my barn." ’

2. A Prayer before the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

    Let me be a holy sacrifice and unite with God in the sacrament of His greatest love.

    I want to be one in Him in this act of love, where He gives Himself to me and I give myself as a sacrifice to Him. Let me be a holy sacrifice as I become one with Him in this my act of greatest love to Him.

    Let me unite with Him more, that I may more deeply love Him. May I help make reparation to His adorable Heart and the heart of His Mother, Mary. With greatest love, I offer myself to You and pray that You will accept my sacrifice of greatest love. I give myself to You and unite in Your gift of Yourself to me. Come and possess my soul.

    Cleanse me, strengthen me, heal me. Dear Holy Spirit act in the heart of Mary to make me more and more like Jesus.

    Father, I offer this my sacrifice, myself united to Jesus in the Holy Spirit to You. Help me to love God more deeply in this act of my greatest love.

    Give me the grace to grow in my knowledge, love and service of You and for this to be my greatest participation in the Mass. Give me the greatest graces to love You so deeply in this Mass, You who are so worthy of my love.

3. A Prayer for Intimacy with the Lamb, the Bridegroom of the Soul

     Oh Lamb of God, Who take away the sins of the world, come and act on my soul most intimately. I surrender myself, as I ask for the grace to let go, to just be as I exist in You and You act most intimately on my soul. You are the Initiator. I am the soul waiting Your favors as You act in me. I love You. I adore You. I worship You. Come and possess my soul with Your Divine Grace, as I experience You most intimately.

 Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, ‘Take this and share it among you, because from now on, I tell you, I shall never again drink wine until the kingdom of God comes.’

Jesus: "My beloved friend, tell My people that they are living in the Age of the Two Hearts—that of My Heart and My Mother's heart. My people live in the initial stages of this great era. I call all My people to take up their refuge in My Heart and My Mother's heart. In Our Hearts they will become more and more transformed into My likeness.

"The greatest source for growth in devotion to Our Hearts is the Eucharist. I wish My people to attend Mass often, daily if possible. What a great gift I have given to My people in the Eucharist! Yet many of My people are indifferent to the treasures contained in the Mass. Think of it! My people are privileged to offer the Sacrifice of the Mass together with Me! And yet how many prefer to do other things rather than attend Mass. How this attitude offends My Sacred Heart!

"I long for My people to participate in the Mass and to receive Me worthily! Think of it! I, Who am your God, long to come to you each day! In the Eucharist I come to you in My Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. Present within you, I long to take you close to My Sacred Heart, this Heart which is truly within you. The more you allow Me to do so, the more closely I press you to this Heart. I shower you with its riches. I abundantly give you great graces which increasingly form you in My likeness.

"I am Lord and Master! Please listen to My words. Pray, pray for a deeper understanding of the Mass. In union with Mary, approach Me daily in the Eucharist. I, your God, long to come to you. How much do you long to receive Me?"

Jesus speaks:  The world is so attached to itself. I am Jesus, Son of God. I am He Who Am. I dwell in your midst this day. Pray for your brothers. Preach the real presence, tell others about God, spread the Good News. So many are in total darkness, they are dying in their hearts. They have made other things their gods. Oh children, you do not know much about the love of God. It is not preached. Many never go to church, they live their lives with hardly a thought of God and they do not hear if someone tells them. Offer up your days for the sake of souls. Pray for them each day when you wake. Offer up your sacrifices for your brothers.
