R. Summary of Retreats November 2013
Excerpt from Response in Christ by Fr. Edward Carter, S.J.
e) Relationship with Members of the Church
There is but one true Church of Christ. Yet this one Church has three different states of existence. There is the pilgrim Church, the Church of this world, composed of members who have received the grace of Christ and strive for its development. They have not yet obtained the goal of their efforts, as have the members of the heavenly Church, who enjoy God in eternal happiness. The Church suffering is an intermediate state of existence necessary for those who had not achieved the required purification as members of the pilgrim Church. Although there are these three phases of the Churchs existence, there is a profound union existing between all the members. All these members possess the same basic life of grace in Christ, and this common life establishes the most intimate bonds of love. In our preceding chapter, we discussed the pilgrim Church. Let us now consider the Church suffering and the heavenly Church.
The members of the Church suffering are those who have departed from this life in an incomplete state of Christian development. Their development is incomplete in the sense that grace has not fully taken possession of them, and, as a result, they are yet closed in upon themselves to a greater or lesser degree. They as yet cannot open themselves out in complete love to the Triune God in the beatific vision. They must undergo a further purification, a purification which could have been achieved upon earth with merit. Now the purification must be achieved with no merit attached. The pain of this purification is mixed with the certain expectation of achieving the vision of God. We can hasten the advent of this vision for this people by the offering of prayers and other good works. Scripture itself refers to our action on behalf of those in purgatory in Chapter 12 of the Second Book of Maccabees beginning with verse 38.
The members of the heavenly Church are those in whom the life of grace has taken full possession and has reached its completion in the life of glory. Faith now is unnecessary, as the light of glory gives the human intellect a new strength and capacity for seeing God face-to-face. While the Christian was a wayfarer, he received the imprint of the indwelling Trinity as he shared in Gods own life. Now in heaven that grace-life and possession of God reaches its completionthe absolute completion is not achieved, however, until the resurrection of the body. The divine persons give Themselves to the beatified in a profound union far surpassing that of the indwelling of the Trinity experienced here below.
This life of heaven is still the Christ-life, for just as we possess a share in Trinitarian life here below as mediated by Christ, and exercise this grace-life as structured by Him, so also in heaven is the mediation of Christ present. In the words of Rahner, "One always sees the Father through Jesus. Just as immediately as this, for the directness of the vision of God is not a denial of the mediatorship of Christ as man."14 And not only does the humanity of Christ unite the blessed to God, but also, in some way, to the whole of creation. This is merely a completion of what is begun here below, namely, the union with Christ in His humanity establishing the Christian in a special relationship with God, with other men, and with the whole of creation. We have a glimpse, therefore, of the fullness of life which members of the heavenly Church possess.
The heavenly Church, as St. Thomas says, is the true Church.15 The Church of this earth and the Church of purgatory are, each in its own way, reaching out in loving hope for the heavenly Jerusalem. Vatican II puts it very simply: "The Church, to which we are called in Christ Jesus, and in which we acquire sanctity through the grace of God, will attain her full perfection only in the glory of heaven."16
The members of the heavenly Church can help us in living our life of grace until we too share its fullness with them. Their power of intercession on our behalf is but another ramification of the communal aspect of Christianity. We are meant to help others grow in Christ. We, in turn, are intended by God to receive aid from othersyes, from members of the heavenly Church, as well as from those with whom we dwell here below.
Not only can we be aided by the saints intercession, but the example of the canonized saints can also be of great value to us. They have concretely proved that full holiness is possible. Such an inspiration is of real worth when we are tempted to think that Christian sanctity in its higher degrees is impossible of attainment. Moreover, the canonized saints, in their diversity, teach us that there are many authentic versions of Christian holiness. They can be innovators in showing us that there are numerous possibilities in assimilating the mystery of Christ, although the basic assimilation remains the same for all Christians of all times. In the opinion of Rahner this is one of the chief roles the canonized saints exert in the life of the Church.17

R. We are to open ourselves to God's will
To forgive those who have hurt us
Unforgiveness keeps us clogged
We cannot be divided
Being divided keeps us from intimacy with God
Makes us miserable - in the fight mode
We must pray for our persecutors
Follow in Jesus' footsteps
God is watching us to see if we will obey
or not
He wants us to be in harmony with
the Father's will
If we obey God and those over us
we are blessed God is watching
us
Why would we try to show God how
we don't obey authority
God is the source
When we operate we should see God and
His will first
Not operate to please the world
We see God, others and ourselves
with distorted vision
Seek to go out to be used as God's
instrument
Don't turn in from past hurts.
We need to forgive from past hurts
There is a soul on the edge of death
If it was us - are we prepared to go
to heaven
were we open in life
were we perfected to be in
heaven in the beatific vision?
We need to change - be converted
We need to clean out the debris in our
hearts
When we love we are being more
and more like Jesus

R. Fear keeps us from loving.
1 John 4: 17-21
Love comes to its perfection in us when we can face the Day of Judgement fearlessly, because even in this world we have become as he is. In love there is no room for fear, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear implies punishment and no one who is afraid has come to perfection in love. Let us love, then, because he first loved us. Anyone who says 'I love God' and hates his brother, is a liar, since whoever does not love the brother whom he can see cannot love God whom he has not seen. Indeed this is the commandment we have received from him, that whoever loves God, must also love his brother.
1 John 4: 7-11
My dear friends, let us love one another, since love is from God and everyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. Whoever fails to love does not know God, because God is love. This is the revelation of God's love for us, that God sent his only Son into the world that we might have life through him. Love consists in this: it is not we who loved God, but God loved us and sent his Son to expiate our sins. My dear friends, if God loved us so much, we too should love one another.

R. Do you know how tender is your
head - with hair
a pin prick in the head
is so painful
pulling the hair
What about nerve endings,
What about a small paper cut
a cut in ones chapped hands
by the fingernail
Blood is right behind the open
cut
There is such a gift in
sensitivity behind the skin
The face is our precious gift
If someone does anything to the
head, the face, it is so
offensive to us
In our face is our eyes
In our face is our mouth
In our face is our smelling
In our head is our ears
Behind the head of hair we
find the brain
We use our face to show
ourselves to others
We take pictures of our face
We can smile with our face
to the world
We can cry and see and show emotions
with our eyes
Our head is so important
Christ allowed His head to be
crowned by human men
Christ allowed them to pound
thorns into His skull
Christ was whipped on His eyes
punched and kicked in His
Head and face
Christ was bloodied in His mouth
teeth going through His lip
Bloodied nose
Lacerated face
Christ suffered to His face
and head for love of us
Christ gave His all to us
Now He gives us His Body
and Blood in the Mass
Christ loves us so much
Christ wants us with Him
in heaven
We have a wounded human nature
Christ is showing us we
must recognize our
fallen human nature
and be converted
Pride keeps us from this
Jealousy keeps us from this
Anger keeps us from this
Envy keeps us from this
Slothfulness keeps us from this
What a price Christ paid for
our sins of pride, envy,
anger, slothfulness, greed
Jesus loves us
to His death on the cross
He loves us
He is the teacher
He teaches us about love
He teaches us about Himself
He teaches us about doing the
Father's will
God commands us to love
Matthew 22: 36-40
'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?' Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'
R. God is love
We were created in God's
image and likeness
Genesis 1: 26-27
God said, Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild animals and all the creatures that creep along the ground.
God created man in the image of himself,
in the image of God he created him,
male and female he created them.

November 13, 2013 continues
R. Sin is an enemy of human happiness.
A man who has sinned should be sorry,
will recognize his sin and repent
for the wrong he did. He will
try to repair any damage done
through his sin.
Sin is a disorder.
The man who sinned who wants to be close
again to God in love is sorry for
offending God and wants to live
according to the Father's will.
God wants order in the world according
to His will.
We are ready to accept the sufferings
God may allow us to suffer for
our sins. Because of sin, because
of the willfulness of the person
to choose sin over what God wanted,
sin hurts the order God wants.
Sin not only hurts the person
sinning, but sin hurts others.
Sin brings disorder.
When God has called us, created
us and intended for us to be
a person of love and light, a
person can tell themselves they are
not offending God by not doing
what they are supposed to.
When God gives us a responsibility
to do something and we do not do
it, we are acting by - not doing - what
we were supposed to do.
God works in order
God gives us order in the
world. God gives us order in the
plants and animals, the way the
world is. God has given us order
in the Church.
We see a person is to be a person
more and more in the image of God.
Jesus healed on the Sabbath and
they pointed a finger at Him.
The devil can use rules to
an extreme for his own purpose.
We are to be as God wants us
to be,
People living in love according
to the Father's will.
God gave Moses the 10
Commandments.
The Ten Commandments
1. I, the Lord, am your God. You shall not have other gods besides me.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.
4. Honor your father and your mother.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.
R. These are the deadly sins
pride, greed, envy, wrath, lust,
gluttony,
and sloth
When we sin we effect our happiness
and the happiness of others.
When we see a disease in the body,
we know there is pain and suffering.
Sin is a disease of the soul.
I like the scripture involving the
lepers they were healed by Jesus.
Jesus cleansed them with His healing.
Sin can destroy the life of the soul
if the person sins mortally and does
not repent for his sin. God gives
us confession to take away mortal
sin.
Sin enslaves a man.
With sin there is conflict in ones
soul - conflict in opposing
a good and loving God.
Our goal is to be happy forever
in heaven with God
in the beatific vision
Here on earth we see distortedly
We see God distortedly
We see others distortedly
We see ourselves distortedly
God wants to embrace us in heaven
forever in the beatific vision.
But going to heaven is a reward
promised to those who loved
and served the Lord.
God gives us the commandments to
follow
God gives us knowledge and the
ability to know and use our
intellect
God gives us the ability to reason
What is our goal?
It is the goal of eternal happiness
with God
Is the goal based on our recognition
in the world among men?
Is our goal based on fear?
Does being too close to others
make fear in us?
We are to spread the good news,
not remain closed-in
on ourselves. We are
to do God's will, not
be slothful.
We were called to love God first and
to love others as ourselves
God has put us here to work
with others not to be
prideful, or jealous, or envious, or angry,
our slothful in what we are doing
We work with others God has called
us to work with doing our job
as God wants even when others
try to move in to take out our
job, we do what God wants us
to do.
I remember a story a man in the
Movement told me
He said a girl was so good at
her work under him she
"aced-out" all the others
in the department.
He had to let her go because she
moved in and did the work of
four other people.
When God calls us to work together
we don't sit back and not do
what we are called to do.
We do not force others to do
our work, by not doing our work.
Our focus is to bear fruit for the
whole operation.
Some are victims and work until
they drop and are not even doing
what they should
If 4 men were called and a person
works to kick the others out
the work is not done as God wants
then there can be a battle between
two head-strong people
Who will win?
The whole effort is not working
to do God's will, but for personal
control and pride of individuals
doing this, "beating the other-out",
competition, conflict - not meekness.
God called 12 apostles to carry on
His work
They were all different
Peter wasn't John
John wasn't Peter
Matthew was Matthew
etc., etc., etc.
Our goal is doing what God wants,
not giving satan a chance to
dictate disorder
by the controlling, prideful hearts.
When God calls Tom, Mary, Sue
and James to the work
He doesn't want James to be lazy
and force the others to pick up
his jobs,
He doesn't want Sue to try to
control everybody else by
changing the directions to
see if they can do things
their own way.
God wants love and unity.
Doing what is their responsibility
with love and commitment
not sitting back and making the
leader badger them. God does not
want one sitting back
and making others do what needs to
get done, that was their responsibility.
A table had 3 legs and was steady.
A little boy came and took off one
leg
Could the table stand on its own?
Jesus: I will separate the sheep from the
goats I called people to
build up not operate in
fear of others and
tear down to where no one is
left
A man tore down the house he was
to build with his own hands
and then he cried.
Is that a sad story?
You are here to learn to work in love
with others
I cry blood for families torn apart
because of controlling people who
will not work with their spouse
then seek a "haven" to keep acting
in such an isolated way
hurting others and
leaving a trail behind
Here is the greatest commandment
Matthew 22: 36-40
'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?' Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'
Jesus: When 2 are called by God
2 should work together as God
calls them
When 3 are called
3 should work together as
God calls them
When 4 are called together
4 should work together
as God calls them
The house is built with more than
one brick
You are in need of conversion
The man who uses himself as
the source to narrow down
everything to his rules is
building a trap
not a family
not a community
not love
I call you to order
I call you to obey the
directions I have given
Men and women are called to marriage
to work together according
to the Father's will in love
A man spent his life polishing
one vase, when God gave
him a lifetime to grow
and learn to love and to
go out to bear fruit
for the Kingdom
He didn't give him 1000 years
Luke 13: 6-9
He told this parable, A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it but found none. He said to his vinedresser, For three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and finding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground? Sir, the man replied, leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it: it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down.
Romans 8:5-9
Those who are living by their natural inclinations have their minds on the things human nature desires; those who live in the Spirit have their minds on spiritual things. And human nature has nothing to look forward to but death, while the Spirit looks forward to life and peace, because the outlook of disordered human nature is opposed to God, since it does not submit to God's Law, and indeed it cannot, and those who live by their natural inclinations can never be pleasing to God. You, however, live not by your natural inclinations, but by the Spirit, since the Spirit of God has made a home in you. Indeed, anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
R. Society, the home, the
Church, the workplace
should provide peace
and harmony for people
to work together in love.
NO Man is an island
Excerpt from Response to God's Love by Fr. Edward Carter, S.J.
The Christian and Church (excerpt)
The members of this cosmic community are supposed to live in a basic love for one another, united in bonds of mutual support and interdependence. This is true because God has created persons as social beings. We are not intended to cut an isolated path through life. We are meant to walk hand in hand with each other, to live within a societal structure, to help others in many different ways. What is more, we must also realize that, in achieving our destiny, we receive much aid, support, and love from others.
R. We need to pray together for
the order God wants
God gives us the 10 Commandments
so we will behave as we
should to God and man.
"Original justice' was
harmed by original sin
Man sees God, others and himself
with distorted vision
Sin brings unhappiness
Sin is disorder
Sin brings unhappiness
Sin is its own punishment
To give honor and glory to God
which is His due, we
must practice the
virtues.
Vices are bad habits
Virtues are good habits
List Capital sins
pride, greed, envy, wrath, lust,
gluttony,
and sloth
Man has tendencies toward the
capital sins because he is
wounded by original sin
in justice
not giving God and others what
is their due
These vices are opposed to the
vision of God
The sin of pride is one which
leads to disobedience,
false ambition, vanity, etc.
Covetousness love of worldly
goods and possessions
excessive attachment to things
in a wrong way
Anger disorder
wanting vengeance on others
Envy uneasiness at others excellence
or good
thinking we need to bring them
down
thinking it hurts us
We need brotherly love
Slothfulness laziness to
. spiritual things
. not wanting to give the
labor necessary to achieve
them
A slothful person neglects
duties
The opposite of this is diligence
doing what God wants

God Calls Us to Love
John 13:34
I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have loved you.
Matthew 7:7
Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.
R.
Dear Jesus, I stand at the door of Your Heart and knock to come in. I want entry - to be lost totally and entirely in Thee. I want to be sheltered inside of Your Heart and wrapped deeply in Your infinite love.Jesus:
I call you, child, to love. Love is rooted in Me. I gave My all for love of you. I held nothing back. Love gives freely for the good of the other. Love exists to draw the other closer to God. If your relationship with your brother in anyway separates you from God, it is not love.Love is not haughty, love does not demand its own way, love exists to lead the other to closer union with Me. I loved you to My death. I gave to you My all! I ask you to give your all for your beloved brothers. In loving them, you are loving Me. I live in your brothers. How can you love Me who you do not see, if you do not love your brother who you see.
I am the way. I am the truth. I am the life. I give that you will know Me and know how to love one another. Love your brothers as I have loved you. When they persecute you and holler every evil word against you, love them. This is My way - to lay down My life for My friends.
John 13:34
I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have loved you.
R.
And to those who heeded His words, their lives were lived in peace and love and they experienced joy in their hearts, for true love brings peace and true love gives joy to the heart of the beholder. It is in loving that you receive, it is in giving that you are rendered to and it is in following the way of Christ that we are led into a life of everlasting happiness.Jesus:
I have not gone. I live with you this day. I am in your brothers. Love them as I have loved you.R. And He sent them such blessings in such abundance and they knew a little of His unending mercy and love.

I Feed the Hungry Soul
Jesus:
Another person cannot feed your hungry soul. You search, you seek. Your starved soul craves only that which I can give. When your heart is searching for love, come, My sweet dear child, into My Heart. My Mother will take you to the deepest recesses of My Heart. There you will know such comfort - in My Heart on fire for love of you this day.You are a child of dignity. You are precious to Me. You are the creation of the Father. I gave the last drop of My blood for you. This is love - you need grace to realize the immenseness of God's love. You are so special to God, all three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Mary loves you so much.
You can never be satisfied on this earth. If you find the dearest mother, father, lover, friend, they will not fill you with the love your soul craves. To find Me is to seek Me. You will not be satisfied on this earth.
You, My child, experience longing for My intense love. I love you to want Me. This is how I long for love of each precious soul. I long for them with the most tender Heart, beating and breathing with fire. I never falter. I never grow dim. I am the same, with the same burning love. Come to Me and jump into My precious Heart. I love you so much.

You Are the Fathers Creation
Jesus:
I come to you in one another. Let not your hearts be hard, let your hearts be as little children, tender and pure. They do not hold grudges, they love each other, they love themselves. You are the creation of My beloved Father. You were created with such dignity and love. I died for you. I gave My life that you would share My life. Oh, My child, pray to the Holy Spirit to open your eyes, to let you see where you are blind, to open your hearts to the ways of God. Pray to Him to sanctify you.
You are called to be Christ to one another. Your hearts have turned hard. Your ways are not My ways. My way is always to love. My ways are to give. My ways are to see in your brother the creation of the Father, so beautiful, so uniquely created.
Each child is a gift from God to this world. Each child is a gift of unique love, given by the Father. You were uniquely created. You are so loved. Pray to know your specialness to God. It is in realizing His love for you that you will love your brothers.
R. We are all brothers in Christ. God is our Father. We are all one.
Jesus:
Join, My little ones, in such love. It is in loving that you will be at peace. Love of each other creates joy in your hearts. Pray for the grace to know and love God more. It is in this knowledge and God's love that you will be My light that shines in the darkest night.I am the Way, I am the Truth. I am the Life! To live in Me you must come to know and love Me. Follow My ways. My ways are the ways of truth. My ways are not always the easy way, they are the ways of love.
If you are to be joined in your hearts, you must love every man. Every man is your brother. You must put on Christ in all your ways. Would Christ act as you are acting?
I love you so much. It is in meditating on My love for you that you will love your brothers.
I put you on this earth to love one another. Pray to the Spirit to know My ways. I am Jesus, Son of the Living God. I truly come to bring you new life. It is in Me you will have the light of life. I love you so, the Father loves you so, the Spirit wants to live in your hearts and make you alive with the love of God. Pray to Mary to lead you through her loving heart into such love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
My child, come to My ever burning Heart. I do not love you one moment and forget you the next. I am forever burning brightly for you. I never falter. I am forever on fire for love of you. If you forget Me, I never ever forget you, I love you so much.

These Messages Need to Circulate
Jesus:
My dear children, I tell you to listen to Me here. I am delivering messages for all to be read and distributed. Souls need to read these messages. Your Center will grow in love of Me when you circulate these messages. I ask. You have a free will. These are My letters of love to all. They are not being read. I deliver these messages to you to deliver to My faithful ones. Please, I beg you to circulate My messages. What more do I say to you! This world is moving further and further from Me. I control your every breath. Do you think you are independent of He Who keeps you alive, second by second?
You do not know how truly frail you are? You do not control the air, the water, the sun, your food. You are dependent on Me for your existence, second by second.
I am your Most loving Savior. I speak to you here. Please listen to Me. This is an urgent request. I love you so and love each hurting soul. All the Blue Books have different messages. They speak to all of you. They need to be published. I will provide the funds to see to this. Your delays are stopping the progress of so many returning to My most intimate love. I beg you, please answer My plea.

Guiding Light
- Reflect on the Word
Guiding Light homily series - Reflect on the Word - Cycle
B The Word leaves an impression on our souls. In my thoughts and
reflections are born a more tangible understanding of these eternal
concepts presented in the Gospels and the readings. Anyone can read a
sentence, but not anyone can absorb it's true meaning. Truth, in this
day and age, is almost a matter of opinion or individual entitlement. We
believe that Christ's truth is our Roman Catholic Church. We, as
priests, champion it's teachings; we are ambassadors for the Pope and
Christ to those faces looking at us. We are the light by which our
congregation reads to reflect upon real truth and we do it hand in hand.

Guiding Light homily series - Steadfast to the Son - Cycle A The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15 | ||
|
Guiding Light - Feed My Soul - Cycle C In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15 |
Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word - Cycle B At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15 |
|
Guiding Light - The Word Alive in Our Hearts. - Cycle A (partial) Homilies by the Reverend Joe Robinson given at St. Boniface Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a tremendous honor Fr. Joe has allowed us to share these great gifts with you for greater holiness and knowing more and more about God. $10 |
