From the Priestly Newsletter 1998 - Issue 1

A Sense of Community. If our life in Christ means anything to you, if love can persuade at all, or the Spirit that we have in common, or any tenderness and sympathy, then be united in your convictions and united in your love, with a common purpose and a common mind. That is the one thing which would make me completely happy. There must be no competition among you, no conceit; but everybody is to be self-effacing. Always consider the other person to be better than yourself, so that nobody thinks of his own interests first but everybody thinks of other people’s interests instead. (Phil 2:1-4)

A selfless person is a beautiful person. A person who is consistently thinking of others reinforces one’s belief in the inherent goodness of human nature. The Christian community needs this kind of person. He or she is a community-forming person. Such a person looks to the building up of the entire body. Such a person looks for ways to promote union and avoid divisiveness.

A community-forming person is one who rejoices in the gifts and accomplishments of others. He or she does not jealously brood over these successes, but thanks God, happy that the Church has been so blessed. One’s joy is thus being constantly multiplied, for the person easily and sincerely shares in the success of others. One’s own joy, consequently, is not enslaved to what happens only to oneself, but rather is a joy linked to the growth, interests, and accomplishment of community.

A community-forming person is also one who responsibly uses his or her talents and opportunities for the good of all. The person realizes that one’s own Christian growth contributes to the Church’s progress, while one’s mediocrity or regression is a burden to all. The person realizes that the exercise of one’s God-given capabilities is beneficial to the community as well as oneself, while abuse or neglect of talents likewise affects not only oneself, but others also.

We can, then, consider a community-forming person from many different perspectives. We see that such a person has a rich and diversified capacity to promote the Christian Community’s ongoing conversion, growth, and sense of solidarity. But from whatever perspective we consider the community-forming person, we always observe a person who is thinking and acting as guided by a sense of "we", not just "I".

The Good Life. I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full. (Jn 10:10).

Words from Henri Nouwen

Although death has recently taken him from us in one way, Henri Nouwen will always remain with us through his written words. There follow a few excerpts from these writings.

  • "I vividly remember how I had, at one time, become totally dependent on the affection and friendship of one person. This dependency threw me into a pit of great anguish and brought me to the verge of a very self-destructive depression. But from the moment I was helped to experience my interpersonal addiction as an expression of a need for total surrender to a living God who would fulfill the deepest desires of my heart, I started to live my dependency in a radically new way. Instead of living it in shame and embarrassment, I was able to live it as an urgent invitation to claim God's unconditional love for myself, a love I can depend on without any fear."13

13. Henri Nouwen, Life of the Beloved, Crossroads, pp. 80-81.

                R. Dear God please help us to be prudent,
to do Your will oh Heavenly Father –
We give our hearts to Jesus and Mary with
                You in love –

Sing: Come to me Lord and Possess my Soul

Dear Father I offer You this day, my
                prayers, works, joys and sufferings,
help the world to be as You want it
                to be –

I offer all I do in union with
Jesus in the Mass, in the Holy Spirit,
                and pray through the intercession
of Mary, with all the angels and
                saints and the souls in
                purgatory.

As the liturgical year comes to an
end in this cycle and we approach
the Feast of Christ the King we
                have readings in our scripture
today of the end times –

                Today's Readings

Daniel 12: 1-3

‘At that time Michael will arise–the great Prince, defender of your people. That will be a time of great distress, unparalleled since nations first came into existence. When that time comes, your own people will be spared–all those whose names are found written in the Book.

‘Of those who are sleeping in the Land of Dust, many will awaken, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting disgrace. Those who are wise will shine as brightly as the expanse of the heavens, and those who have instructed many in uprightness, as bright as stars for all eternity.

Psalm 16: 5, 8-11

My birthright, my cup is Yahweh;
you, you alone, hold my lot secure.

I keep Yahweh before me always,
for with him at my right hand, nothing can shake me.

So my heart rejoices, my soul delights,
my body too will rest secure,
for you will not abandon me to Sheol,
you cannot allow your faithful servant to see the abyss.
You will teach me the path of life,
unbounded joy in your presence,
at your right hand delight for ever.

  Hebrews 10: 11-14, 18

Every priest stands at his duties every day, offering over and over again the same sacrifices which are quite incapable of taking away sins. He, on the other hand, has offered one single sacrifice for sins, and then taken his seat for ever, at the right hand of God, where he is now waiting till his enemies are made his footstool. By virtue of that one single offering, he has achieved the eternal perfection of all who are sanctified.

When these have been forgiven, there can be no more sin offerings.

Mark 13: 24-32

'But in those days, after that time of distress, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will come falling out of the sky and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.  And then they will see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send the angels to gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the world to the ends of the sky.

'Take the fig tree as a parable: as soon as its twigs grow supple and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. So with you when you see these things happening: know that he is near, right at the gates. In truth I tell you, before this generation has passed away all these things will have taken place. Sky and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 'But as for that day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son; no one but the Father.

                R. Fr. Joe's homily today.

The Last Book of the Bible is Revelation.

                Revelation is Apocalyptic.

There are a number of other
                    books that are Apocalyptic –
                    like Daniel.

The message of these books were
                    hopeful –
The Era of Peace - is
                        God's Reign –

                Daniel is Apocalyptic.

In Today's first reading from Daniel,
the Jews were forced to give up their
religion and follow the pagans –

                Sufferings were unsurpassed.

                Those who remain faithful to
                    God would be okay –

Those who didn't would be sorry.

Our world as we know it will
                    not continue forever –

We need to be better prepared
                    for the end times –

Jesus told of the destruction of the
                    temple in Jerusalem.

Jesus spoke of wars and tribulations
                    and people would suffer.

                The central thing is
we hear of the return of the Glorified Jesus.

Jesus' return is a key feature
                    of the end times.

Daniel didn't say what would happen
                    to those who didn't follow
                    as they should.

In the Gospel we hear we won't need
                    the sun and moon.

                Jesus will be our Light.

How soon will Jesus come –

Soon - we should be always ready.

We are always to be ready to meet the Lord –

                Jesus gives us another parable
                    after the Gospel today –

Matthew 13: 36-43

Then, leaving the crowds, he went to the house; and his disciples came to him and said, 'Explain to us the parable about the darnel in the field.' He said in reply, ' The sower of the good seed is the Son of man. The field is the world; the good seed is the subjects of the kingdom; the darnel, the subjects of the Evil One; the enemy who sowed it, the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; the reapers are the angels. Well then, just as the darnel is gathered up and burnt in the fire, so it will be at the end of time. The Son of man will send his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of falling and all who do evil, and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. The the upright will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Anyone who has ears should listen!

                R. In the Scripture
Jesus calls Himself the Son of Man –

God gives the Son of Man –

who receives glory and honor –

                Jesus is the one –

When will the Second Coming Come?

                Some people think it's
                    right around the corner –

Others think "Oh there he goes again,
it won't come for a million years".

We are to live expecting this Second Coming.

                This has challenged theologians
                    what Jesus meant

"In truth I tell you, before this generation
has passed away all these things
will have taken place."  Mark 13: 30

There is a difference of opinion what
                    Jesus meant here among the
                    scholars –

                Fr. Joe said

                    Every sentence of the Bible
had to be written down by
                    hand - every letter –
                    until they invented other ways.

                Jesus also said:

Acts 1: 7

He replied, ‘It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority,

                Jesus said –

                    It's not for you

                R. We have suffered in this world
                because of threatening events on
                the 13th.

I want to ask you to say the
                Shepherds of Christ prayers Jesus
gave to Fr. Carter 21 years ago –
When Jesus told Fr. Carter to
begin Shepherds of Christ, He gave
him the Shepherds of Christ prayers to pray for
the priests, the Church and the world. He
                told Fr. Carter to have
them translated in all languages and
                prayed around the world.

                R.
I thought was interesting when
Mary first appeared I was told to
be there at 6:30 – later we were
told to say the Holy Spirit Novena at 6:20
and the Shepherds of Christ Prayers
                at 6:30 as usual –

                    So we have prayed these
prayers at 6:30 for 21 years
with the apparitions of Mary and
we have been praying at this time
for the priests, the Church and the
                world.

Then Our Lady gave me a message
in the First Daily Message Book
so these prayers with Devotion to
the Hearts of Jesus and Mary would be
                prayed around the clock.

This is in Daily Message Book I – about
                August, 1998 with letters A - M & N - Z
                something like this.

August 11, 1998

There Will Be a Network of Prayer Power at 6:30 in the Evening

Message from Mary

Mary: My children,

Every day I will give you a message on the Internet for the world.

Also, here is a basic format. I am asking you to pray the prayers from the Shepherds of Christ Prayer Manual and recite the rosary daily if possible at 6:30 p.m.
A-M to pray at 6:30 their time.
N-Z to pray at 6:30 Florida time.

There will be a network of prayer power pleasing your Father all through the day and a concentration of prayer power at 6:30 in the evening.

Your God is angered at the earth. Great graces will be granted if you pray as I have requested.

The hand of my Son is raised, and I have asked your God to have mercy on my children.

I am asking you to pray.

I am asking you to consecrate your hearts to my Heart and the Heart of my Son Jesus.

This can be given in a single line.
"I give my heart to Jesus and Mary with you in love."

I love you,

I am your Mother Mary

                R. The Angel of Portugal gave prayers

From the Spirituality of Fatima

A. Springtime

"My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You! I ask pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You."

Then, rising he said: "Pray thus. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications." (3)

                        B. Summer of 1916

Pray! Pray a great deal. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs on you. Offer prayers and sacrifices continually to the Most High. Make everything you do a sacrifice, and offer it as an act of reparation for the sins by which God is offended, and as a petition for the conversion of sinners. Bring peace to our country in this way.... I am the Guardian Angel of Portugal Accept and bear with submission all the sufferings the Lord will send you. (4)

                        C. Fall of the same year

"Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly. I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He is offended. By the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and [the intercession of] the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners." (5)

Mary's Message
from the Rosary of August 27, 1996

Mary:  I stood beneath the cross of my Son, and my Heart was in such pain for I saw Him before my eyes. I saw Him covered with blood. I saw Him die. My Heart, my children, my Heart to watch my Son, but my Heart, my Heart, how I suffered for my little children of the world that give in to this world and give up the love of my Son. O my little children of light, I give you this message. Carry this light into the darkness for your Mother Mary, for I stood beneath the cross and I cried. I cried for the little ones. I cried for the young ones, the ones that do not care and will lose their souls. How do I make you see for you will not listen to me? What can I do? I come. I appear. I beg. I plead. I give you these gifts from my Son, and you reject me. I do not deliver messages very often anymore for I have been ignored. The message is the same. You do not read the messages I have given to you. Please help me. Help the little children. I appear. I appear. I appear, and I am ignored. I stood beneath the cross, and I cried. I cried, and my Heart was in such anguish for my little children, for I am searching for them this day as I searched for the Child Jesus. Please, please help me. I cannot hold back the hand of my Son any longer. I am Mary, your Mother. I ask you to help my children. You are my children of light.

end of Mary's Message

                R. Prudence is important –

Many people do not act with
                    the virtue of prudence –

Many times people need to make
                    choices that are good for
                    the whole family and they
                    can force a decision on
                    all because of their own
                    selfish interests.

                Discernment of spirits is so
                    important –
                    Thoughts or inspirations can
                    come from the Holy Spirit,
                    ourselves, from satan.
                    St. Ignatius says, we must
                    discern the spirits and not
give into those that are not the
                    right ones.

                We seek right reasoning –

We seek guidance from the Holy Spirit.

When one decides it is imprudent to
do something – the way he explains
how he won't do it - to another
should also be done according to
                    God's will –

How we communicate is also under
                    God's will –

If a person is to communicate and
                    they give the silent treatment
for a long period of time – then
ignore the fact they did it –
                    hurt the company plans, hurt
the morale and then come back and
parade around as if they did nothing
and won't take any correction –
                    they are acting imprudently and
bitterness and anger may be the
                    reason they hold out, slothfulness,
                    control, power, etc. –

A person learns to be kind, to be
under authority, to be a leader
                    with responsibility and accountability,
a person learns to be under
                    authority and respect those over
them, a person learns to respect
                    the dignity of others –

A person, from working in relationships –
learns to anticipate many things, learns
how to trust, to talk, to give, to
                    receive –
God has called us to learn these things
and has created us in the image and
                    likeness of Jesus.

We are called to act prudently –
prudence is a virtue – we pray
for the grace to be prudent –

Dwelling in the Heart of Jesus helps
us to be so one with Him – In
the Heart of Jesus are infinite
treasures for us to grow in the
                    likeness of Jesus.

Satan can tempt and influence a
                    man who acts imprudently –
and the man gives into satan's
                    inspiration.

The Holy Spirit can inspire a man to take
the right course and help him
                    to have guidance in actions
                    that are loving and according
                    to the Father's will.

God can give a man a grace to know
what to do and act prudently –
A man because of practice and
acting in love and care for
                    others can act prudently.

The man who doesn't even try to work
                    with others in relationships reminds
me of the guy who had one talent
                    and buried it.

God has called us to work with certain
others in our vocation in the
building of the Kingdom of God –
If God calls us to interact and
be kind, to be obedient – it
is wrong to hold out and never
                    be accountable for our actions
                    or responsible for the effects
                    of this inactivity and to
                    refuse correction from those
                    in charge –

A person wishing to join a religious
order, must be screened as to whether
it is advantageous for the existing
                    community –

God is all good, to be charitable or
loving and to do the will of God
in love – requires God's grace.
If we are good, it is because of
                    God's grace –

We are to respond to that grace,
                    because we recognize our
dependence on God – we are
sensitive to the Holy Spirit working
                    in us, guiding us, giving
us the fire of God's love –

God can give a man a special grace
                    to act supernaturally prudent. A
man is to remain in the state of
grace if he wants to act virtuously.
                    This supernatural prudence is
                    far above natural prudence from
                    practicing and learning prudence.

We seek the vision of God, we
                seek supernatural prudence with
a special grace from God to
                live virtuously. God guides the
                man with supernatural prudence,
he must respond to the grace
                given by God.

God the Holy Spirit counsels the soul
and guides him in the vision of God.
The Holy Spirit can work in the heart of a
man who is docile to His touch
and ready to be moved by God
to perform actions in him –
the man is giving his will over
                to this action and performing
                as God guides him. This
compliance to the will of God under
the guidance of the Holy Spirit makes
                a man happy –

We need prudence in our lives,
                prudence for ourselves, prudence
for the family, prudence for the
Church and the world etc. –
Prudence helps us to seek good
as God wants us to be for
                His honor and glory!

A man before he acts must seek
counsel if he is to be prudent –
He is always seeking the Father's
                    will in love -
Doing his actions for the honor
                    and glory of God –
Wanting to bring the good according
to the vision of God –

                We are responsible and accountable
for our actions toward others and
                    of course to God –

The 4th through the 10th commandments
                    tell us about our relationship
                    with others –

God calls us to love our neighbors
                    as ourselves –

Of course we know we are to love
                    God above all things –
                    the Commandments one to three
                    tell us this.

When a man is imprudent he
                    doesn't use counsel for
his actions – he does not
                    use guidance, or memory or
                    understanding or right reasoning –
                    he can act impulsively,
he can act because of his vices
                    and be imprudent –
                    jealousy, envy, pride, anger,
                    slothfulness, lustful, gluttony
                    can cause him to act
                    imprudently.

There are consequences to actions –
                    Cause – Effect –

                An imprudent man can just
do his actions on a whim –
because of anger, jealousy etc. –

                To act imprudently, slothfully and
                    refuse correction, direction,
                    being unaccountable and
                    unresponsible for one's
acts hurts a lot of people,
                    hurts the plan God wants
                    for a body of persons
                    involved.

What can have even worse consequences
sometimes, is the man who plays
tricks and acts in evil in
a crafty way to others –

One may in pride see himself
                    as being prudent if he
is crafty in holding power for
                    himself above others –

The vision a man must seek is
the vision of God. God works
in order – God has placed
                    structure in things –

If a man sees himself and his plan
                    of being dominant for dominant
sake – he may pride himself
                    on being above
                    just authority –

He may say if I do work for the
                    company and organization
                    at my pace, the authority
                    God wants, doesn't matter –
This is acting against the vision
                    of God and against authority
                    and is acting imprudently –
God wants obedience to authority –
                    God works in authority –

All actions are to lead man to God.

Actions are to be according to
God's will – God works in
                    structure –
Man is to act according to the
                        vision of God in love.

When a man is imprudent it
                    takes him away from
                    being really happy. Happiness is
found in doing God's will –
                    seeing the vision of God.

A man may seek something out of
                    pride and jealousy toward
                    another –
                    his actions are imprudent –
                    these actions bring himself,
                    ultimately away from God
                    which makes him miserable.

All actions can lead us to God
                    or away from what God
                    wants –

We are here to seek eternal
                    happiness and our actions
                    are ultimately to be

                    1) according to God's will
                        (seeking the vision of God)

                    2) loving

                    3) ultimately seeking eternal
                        happiness

St. Ignatius speaks of the PURPOSE
                    of the SPIRITUAL EXERCISES –

                SPIRITUAL EXERCISES are
                    exercises we practice.

From The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
    by Louis J. Puhl, S.J.

21.                     SPIRITUAL EXERCISES

Which have as their purpose the conquest of self
and the regulation of one's life in such a way that
no decision is made under the influence of any
    inordinate attachment
