Excerpt from The Spirituality of Fatima
by Fr. Edward Carter, S.J.
July 13, 1917
"During her appearance in July, Our Lady, in answer to Lucia's plea, promised that in October she would work a great miracle so that all might believe and know who she was. Again, the Mother of God told the children to sacrifice themselves for sinners and to say many times, especially when making a sacrifice, this prayer: "O my Jesus, I offer this for love of Thee, for the conversion of poor sinners, and in reparation for all the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary." (11)
"During this same July apparition, Mary showed the three children a vision of Hell. She told them:
"You have seen Hell, where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish, in the world, devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If people do what I tell you, many souls will be saved and there will be peace.
"The war (World War I, then raging) is going to end. But if people do not stop offending God, another and worse one will begin in the reign of Pius XI. When you shall see a night illuminated by an unknown light [January 2, 1938], know that this is the great sign that God gives you that He is going to punish the world for its many crimes by means of war, hunger, and persecution of the Church and the Holy Father. (12)
"To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of Reparation on the five first Saturdays. If my requests are granted, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, she will scatter her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, and various nations will be destroyed....
"But in the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph, the Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, Russia will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world." (13)

R. The third step of the 12 Step program is
we need to put our life and our will in
God's hands.
God has a plan for us. God the Father
created us and we are to learn to live
according to His will. We say in the Our Father,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to do Thy
Holy will. Help us not to give into bad habits
that divide us from others. Help us to seek
positive images in our minds and hearts.
We pray for right reasoning – help us not
to give into distorted thinking that comes
from anger and pride and envy and
jealousy and slothfulness, addictions –
Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus we place our trust
in Thee.
Why would we want to hold onto negative,
punishing thinking when we end up
then, having to go it alone. God wants us
to forgive and to pray for ourselves and
others.
Jesus gave Fr. Carter the Shepherds of Christ
prayers, centered in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
We pray, honoring the Sacred Heart and Mary.
We pray, honoring the Sacred Heart and Immaculate
Heart, we pray for the priests, the Church
and the world.
We pray united to the Mass, to the
Father in the Holy Spirit, in unity with
Jesus, with all the angels and saints
and the souls in purgatory –
We offer up our whole day united to the Mass –
so we want everything we do done in
love – We love God first and love our
neighbor as ourselves.
We can surrender our lives to God
and rely on Him, on His Might and
put our will in His bands.
Let go, He says, Let go to Me.
Prayer for Union with Jesus
Come to me, Lord, and possess my soul. Come into my heart and permeate my soul. Help me to sit in silence with You and let You work in my heart.
I am Yours to possess. I am Yours to use. I want to be selfless and only exist in You. Help me to spoon out all that is me and be an empty vessel ready to be filled by You. Help me to die to myself and live only for You. Use me as You will. Let me never draw my attention back to myself. I only want to operate as You do, dwelling within me.
I am Yours, Lord. I want to have my life in You. I want to do the will of the Father. Give me the strength to put aside the world and let You operate my very being. Help me to act as You desire. Strengthen me against the distractions of the devil to take me from Your work.
When I worry, I have taken my focus off of You and placed it on myself. Help me not to give in to the promptings of others to change what in my heart You are making very clear to me. I worship You, I adore You and I love You. Come and dwell in me now.

R. I must learn to let go and trust
in Him. The more I trust in God
the more I know how much I
can trust in His Might. Let go
to God.

R. When I just trust in myself it
doesn't work, I need His Might in
my life – I need His help – I need to
let go of my will and seek His will –
I must trust in Him – Let go and trust –
I must realize in giving my will
and my life to God, I am doing what
God asks of me, I am responsible
to God for doing my job, I am
accountable to God for doing
what I am supposed to do.
God gives me a free will to
choose my will or His, but He
has given me my talents to use
in the building of His Kingdom. To have
an attitude of gratitude, to be
active doing His will in our lives –
to be a witness of His love before
others –
Allowing Him to operate in us, in
all we do.
God has given me my intelligence
to use right reasoning and in
baptism our knowing and loving
capacity is elevated – So we can
know and love on a supernatural
level - in God.
My judgment for my actions
should be based on right reasoning,
on seeking my actions as a goal
for eternal happiness with God –
my actions should be according to
God's will –
never come from resentment,
anger, pride, punishment,
getting even.
Nobody is perfect. People disappoint
us, they act incorrectly – we can't
throw everybody out because we
think - we can act the way we
want and demand perfections
of others. We will surely stand
alone –
We cannot ignore problems –
And there may be solutions that
demand suffering and are hard –
but God is with us to help us solve
our problems. We must seek
His help and work hard to solve
problems, to communicate, to love,
to be as God wants us to be.
We pray to the Holy Spirit to give
us the gifts of wisdom and counsel
and understanding, fortitude, knowledge,
piety and Fear of the Lord,
but we must be rooted in love for
the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts
in His gifts.
We cannot be full of resentment
and false reasoning, anger,
wanting punishment to others
for our own angry hearts.
Jesus: Be as an unclogged pipe –
Let love flow in your hearts.
First to thine own self be true –
Love yourselves, but admit your
faults and when you hurt
others – MEND the FENCE - by
being reconciled to them –
Be honest, ask for strength to
be as your Heavenly Father
wills you to be –
Let go – I am with you.
Seek the absolute truth.
I am the way, the truth and
the life.
Walk with Me in truth – do
not lie, live honestly.
Surrender to My hand –
Let Go –
Take responsibility for your actions.
R. In hope a man sees a future good
and he is willing to go through difficulty
to attain it.
In despair a man runs away
from a favorable outcome
because he thinks he can't
attain it.
The motive for an action is key.
If we see through the eyes of the
Heavenly Father we see that
He wants us to have eternal
happiness and with hope we
seek this in our every action
by loving and serving God –
We see in Mary, perfect handmaid
of the Lord, she loved the Father's
will, she loved, she loved to serve
God, she lived to do His will –
She was God's servant – He was
her Master –

In all this Mary offers an example. Selfishness was totally foreign to her. She did not belong to herself. She belonged to God. She was not closed in upon herself. She was completely open to God. When God spoke, she listened. When God pointed the way, she followed. She realized that life is not a process a person masters by carefully mapping out one's own self-conceived plans of conquest, but a mystery to be gradually experienced by being open to God's personal and loving guidance.
Selfishness, then, did not close Mary off from God's call. Neither did fear. God asked her to assume a tremendous responsibility. He asked her to be the Mother of Jesus. Mary did not engage in a process of false humility and say that such a great role was above her. She did not say that she did not have the proper qualifications for this awesome mission. Briefly, she did not waste time looking at herself, making pleas that she was not worthy, telling the angel he had better go look for someone else. No, Mary did not look at herself. Her gaze was absorbed in God. She fully realized that whatever God asked of her, His grace would accomplish. She fully realized that although she herself had to cooperate, this work was much more God's than hers.
Mary's words, then, truly sum up what is the authentic Christian response at any point of life, in any kind of situation: "I am the handmaid of the Lord," said Mary, "let what you have said be done to me".
