Prayer for Grace for our Country
Dear Father united to Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacrifice of Calvary sacramentally made present, celebrated around the world, in the Holy Spirit. We offer up all we do united to the Mass. We unite in one mind and one heart as members of the mystical body of Christ, with Christ our head in the pure and holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary, through the powerful intercession of Mary with all the angels and saints and souls in purgatory, and we beg for the saving grace, for our country, the United States. Please help us. We further pray for unity to always do the will of God in love. We spread the Blood of Jesus on the leaders and people of the United States and cast the devil into hell. We consecrate our country to the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart and all our dioceses, and beg for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. God help us. We pray for our families, the priests, the Church and the world. In the Name of Jesus please hear us, we pray. We pray for our new president as he takes office. We pray that we are united as one nation under God to work together in love as God wants.

Sirach 3: 2-6, 12-14

Colossians 3:12-21

The morals of the home and household
Wives, be subject to your husbands, as you should in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be sharp with them. Children, be obedient to your parents always, because that is what will please the Lord. Parents, do not irritate your children or they will lose heart.
Luke 2: 22-40
And when the day came for them to be purified in keeping with the Law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord—observing what is written in the Law of the Lord: Every first–born male must be consecrated to the Lord—and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is prescribed in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he looked forward to the restoration of Israel and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the Law required, he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said:
Now, Master, you are letting
your servant go in peace
as you promised;
for my eyes have seen the salvation
which you have made ready
in the sight of the nations;
a light of revelation for the gentiles
and glory for your people Israel.As the child’s father and mother were wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘Look, he is destined for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed—and a sword will pierce your soul too—so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.’
There was a prophetess, too, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years before becoming a widow. She was now eighty–four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer. She came up just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.
When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. And as the child grew to maturity, he was filled with wisdom; and God's favour was with him.

INTRODUCTION
– (Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14; Col.3:12-21; Luke 2:22-40) The Christmas season will last for two more weeks. With Joseph taking Mary as his wife and with the birth of Jesus, a new family is founded and it is a holy one. Ben Sirach, who speaks to us in today’s first reading, was a teacher in a Jerusalem school nearly 200 years before Christ was born. Sirach’s instructions cover topics such as home life, business, courtship and marriage, travel and entertainment. He even offers proper etiquette for entertaining guests or how to behave when invited out. Today’s passage deals with our relationship with our parents, the importance of respect and obedience when we’re young, and patience and kindness when we get older and they are too. In our second reading, Paul is writing to counteract the heretical teachings of those who thought that salvation was reserved only for those who were members of certain secret cults. He tells us it’s the ordinary virtues that everyone knows and anyone can practice that are important; such as compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness and love. Notice the importance he places on religious virtues such as familiarity with the word of God, prayer, singing and thanksgiving. The Greek word for thanksgiving is Eucharistia. When husbands hear Paul talk about wives being submissive to their husbands, they sometimes do not hear what follows. There is a mutual giving and receiving that is needed in marriage.HOMILY
– When the Holy Family is put before us as a model for us to imitate, we feel that is impossible. They are so far beyond us in holiness that imitating them would be like any of us trying to play baseball like Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth. Well, we may not be the perfect holy family, but we are a holy family if we are in God’s grace. It’s God’s grace that makes us holy and if the members of our family stay in God’s grace, we are a holy family. The only danger we face is becoming spiritually complacent and lazy. We never stay in the same place spiritually, we are either moving forward or backward, and unless we keep trying to grow in God’s grace, we will end up slipping backward or even losing grace altogether. As we heard in the second reading, there are no secrets to living and growing in grace. It’s just a matter of practicing the ordinary virtues we learned when we were young: kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, etc. Jesus summed them up in his famous answer about the greatest commandment: loving God as much as we can and loving our neighbor as ourselves. The neighbor that we most often neglect is the person or persons closest to us. We too often take each other for granted instead of making time for one another, helping each other, complimenting each other, thanking each other or being patient and forgiving of one another. Good relationships are made up of just so many little things.I think at times we imagine the Holy Family lived a charmed life without problems or stress. Problems began even before Jesus was born when Joseph was about to break his engagement to Mary. Think for a moment where Jesus was born - not neat and clean like the little mangers we put up in our homes. He was born in a stable that probably was smelly and dirty, maybe damp and cold. In today’s gospel we are told about their presenting Jesus in the Temple and offering the required sacrifice according to the law of the Lord. St. Luke is telling us they were poor, they offered the sacrifice of the poor.
St. Luke, incidentally, is telling us they observed the laws of their Jewish faith and were obedient to God. We can’t be holy and ignore the things God asks of us. As they went to the Temple, surely they were happy to be able to bring their child there. But then an old man came up to tell Mary her heart would some day be broken because of her child. What a chilling prophecy! Shortly after this St. Joseph is told by an angel to get out of the area, that the king is planning on killing their child. So they end up refugees in a foreign land for a few years. The only other event we know of during Jesus’ youth was when he was 12 and he was lost in the Temple for three days. What a worry and concern that must have been. A holy family is not a family without problems or heart aches. It’s how we deal with those problems that really matters. We must be faithful to God at all times and we must deal with each other with fairness, kindness, patience and love. May God’s blessings be with you and your families today and throughout the coming year.
