“Look, the days are coming, Yahweh declares, when I shall fulfil the promise of happiness I made to the House of Israel and the House of Judah:

May the Lord increase and enrich your love for each other and for all, so that it matches ours for you. And may he so confirm your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless in the sight of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

‘Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened by debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will come upon you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come down on all those living on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to hold your ground before the Son of man.’
1st Sunday of Advent
November 29, 2009
– (Jeremiah 33:14-16; 1 Thess. 3:12-4:2; Luke 21:25-28,34-36) The prophet, Jeremiah, lived during one of the most devastating times in the history of Israel. He witnessed the Babylonian invasion which brought with it the destruction of the city of Jerusalem along with its Temple, the only Temple of the Jewish people. He saw many of his fellow citizens enslaved and taken into exile. Yet his words reflect hope and not despair. His hope is based not on human capabilities but on God’s faithfulness to God’s promises. Jeremiah recalls God’s promise to his people made over 400 years earlier – during the time of King David. God would bring to the throne a successor to the King who would bring peace and security to Jerusalem. We still wait for peace and security – not only in Jerusalem but all over the world. The promised one, a descendant of the House of David, has begun his reign. The gospel tells us one day he will come in great glory to complete his work and to establish the kingdom of God forever.INTRODUCTION
HOMILY
– You may have heard this one before. It’s about a fellow who wanted a Lexus for Christmas. So a few weeks before Christmas he went to his parish priest and asked: “Would you do a novena for me so I get a Lexus for Christmas?” The priest said, “I need to ask one question first: ‘What’s a Lexus?’” So the fellow thought it was probably a lost cause. I’ll ask someone else. So he went to a nearby Church where a Franciscan priest was a pastor and he asked him: “Would you do a novena for me so I get a Lexus for Christmas?” The poor, humble priest said, “I need to ask one question: ‘What’s a Lexus?’” The fellow thought, “I won’t get anywhere here.” So he went to the local Jesuit parish and asked the pastor: “Would you do a novena for me so I get a Lexus for Christmas?” The Jesuit priest said, “I have one question I need to ask, ‘What’s a novena?’”Never let it be said that you came to St. Boniface and never heard the word “novena.” It comes from the Latin word “novem.” That’s how November got its name because originally in the Roman calendar November was the ninth month of the year. A novena is nine days of prayer or sacrifice for a special intention or to prepare for a special feast. Many people make a novena of prayer for the gift of the Holy Spirit right before Pentecost. Today starts Advent, a time to prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Advent is longer than nine days – this year it’s more like three novenas, 27 days. We might consider including the spirit of novena, prayer and sacrifice, as part of our Christmas preparations. Buying gifts, decorating, sending cards and going to parties might be nice but how much do they do for our inner self, our spirit, besides maybe wear us out? Jesus tells us pointedly in today’s gospel, “Be careful not to let your hearts be weighed down from dissipation and drunkenness and the anxieties of this life … but be alert at all times and pray…” In the midst of all our preparations for Christmas, we have to work at making this also a time of spiritual preparation or Christ’s birth will be a shallow event for us. If his birth is an event without much depth of spiritual meaning for us, neither will any other part of our faith have much depth of meaning, including the beautiful gift of himself he gives us in the Eucharist.
Jesus’ first coming was simple and humble, his coming to us now in the poor, in prayer and sacrament is experienced mostly by faith, but his coming in the future will be glorious and unmistakable, although it will be frightful for some as he tells us in today’s gospel. On this first Sunday of Advent, we prepare for his coming by beginning to tell his story again: the story of his birth, his miracles and teaching, his death and resurrection. St. Luke will be our mentor through much of this year. When I taught religion in high school, I would often introduce a topic and the students would complain: “We studied that in grade school.” The implication being, of course, that they thought they knew all there was to know about the topic. We might be tempted to think the same thing as we begin again to tell Jesus’ story: “we heard that last year.” But we’re not the same person we were last year, or the year before. We’ve grown older, we’ve encountered new experiences, we may have made new friends or other friends have gone out of our lives, we most likely see things a little differently than we did a year or two ago. As we hear it again, we will see the story of Jesus perhaps a little differently than we did a year ago, perhaps it will mean a little more to us than it did then. Although the story of Jesus does not change, we do. We have to keep hearing it over and over to fully appreciate it for it is a story of infinite love, a story of infinite meaning that will continue to speak to us. We will never exhaust the richness of the love Christ has shown us. Amen.
