Exodus 20: 1-17

Then God spoke all these words. He said, ‘I am Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, where you lived as slaves.

‘You shall have no other gods to rival me.

‘You shall not make yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything in heaven above or on earth beneath or in the waters under the earth.

‘You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God and I punish a parent’s fault in the children, the grandchildren, and the great–grandchildren among those who hate me; but I act with faithful love towards thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

‘You shall not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, for Yahweh will not leave unpunished anyone who misuses his name.

‘Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath for Yahweh your God. You shall do no work that day, neither you nor your son nor your daughter nor your servants, men or women, nor your animals nor the alien living with you. For in six days Yahweh made the heavens, earth and sea and all that these contain, but on the seventh day he rested; that is why Yahweh has blessed the Sabbath day and made it sacred.

‘Honour your father and your mother so that you may live long in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you.

    ‘You shall not kill.

    ‘You shall not commit adultery.

    ‘You shall not steal.

‘You shall not give false evidence against your neighbour.

‘You shall not set your heart on your neighbour’s house. You shall not set your heart on your neighbour’s spouse, or servant, man or woman, or ox, or donkey, or any of your neighbour’s possessions.’

Psalm 19: 8-11

The precepts of Yahweh are honest,
    joy for the heart;
the commandment of Yahweh is pure,
    light for the eyes.

The fear of Yahweh is pure,
    lasting for ever;
the judgements of Yahweh are true,
    upright, every one,

more desirable than gold,
    even than the finest gold;
his words are sweeter than honey,
    that drips from the comb.

Thus your servant is formed by them;
    observing them brings great reward.

1 Corinthians 1: 22-25

While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the gentiles foolishness, but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is both the power of God and the wisdom of God. God's folly is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.

John 2: 13-25

When the time of the Jewish Passover was near Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting there. Making a whip out of cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, sheep and cattle as well, scattered the money changers' coins, knocked their tables over and said to the dove sellers, 'Take all this out of here and stop using my Father's house as a market.' Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: I am eaten up with zeal for your house. The Jews intervened and said, 'What sign can you show us that you should act like this?' Jesus answered, ‘Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple: are you going to raise it up again in three days?’ But he was speaking of the Temple that was his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and what he had said.

During his stay in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he did, but Jesus knew all people and did not trust himself to them; he never needed evidence about anyone; he could tell what someone had within.

                R. All 4 of the Gospels tells us about
                    Jesus cleaning the temple —

John's Gospel said it was at
                    beginning of His ministry —

But other 3 Gospels say it is at the
end of His public ministries —

Money - changers were offering a legitimate
service, but they had a monopoly
on it and they were gouging —
the high priest was the great
                    procurer of money —

The story of the temple is tragic
                    It was destroyed —
                    Jesus predicted it and
said He would raise up the temple
                    in 3 days —

The Apostles understood after the resurrection.
                Religion needs money,
                    Jesus paid the temple tax,
                    but those who support
                    the work of religion
do not need to take advantage
                    of the religious organization —

                From Ash Wednesday

                Antiphon 1

                    Let us change our garments
                    to sackcloth and ashes,
let us fast and weep before the Lord,
that our God, rich in mercy,
                    might forgive us our sins.

                R. God calls us in our vocation to
                freely answer. Response to God's
love — Response to the vocation
He has called us to —

                    It requires a free response
                from the heart.

We see Jesus threw out the money
changers who were using God's house
                for their personal gain —

God gives us hearts to love — Hearts to be soft,
supple, to spread His love to others —
we are commissioned in baptism to go out —
what is in the heart — Are our hearts hypocritical,
phony! Look at what Christ did to the money changers
                    in the temple —

We are a temple of the Holy Spirit —
Our hearts are for unity and love!!
Do we have bitterness in our heart?

                We are to live
our vocation having a free response
                    to the structure involved
                    not raising up for power.

We are to have free response to the
                    rules to help build the
Kingdom of God in our vocation —
to bear fruit for the Kingdom —

We can see in the Bible how
                the prophets were persecuted
and put to death for delivering
                the message God wanted
                to give.

                    God the Father made the
                vineyard to produce fruit
                for the Kingdom. When the
person who was to lead the
                operation came they killed
him - even killing the son —

This reminds us of Jesus —
being put to death — Jesus came
to the earth and He was put to death.

The Father is the Divine Dresser
                    of the Vineyard —

Look at the way the world
                    is today —

Look at what they did to
                    Jesus when He walked
                    the earth —

                Look what Joseph's brothers
                    did to him —

Look at what Cain did to Abel —

Look at the 2 sons and the one
                    squandered his Father's
                    wealth —
                    the other was jealous —

God is calling us to love, to
                    having virtue —

                God loves us with
                    unfathomable love

R. The Two Sons

Matthew 21: 28-32

‘What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, "My boy, go and work in the vineyard today." He answered, "I will not go," but afterwards thought better of it and went. The man then went and said the same thing to the second who answered, "Certainly, sir," but did not go. Which of the two did the father’s will?’ They said, ‘The first.’ Jesus said to them, ‘In truth I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you, showing the way of uprightness, but you did not believe him, and yet the tax collectors and prostitutes did. Even after seeing that, you refused to think better of it and believe in him.

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 28, 2008

INTRODUCTION – (Ezekiel 18: 25-28, Philippians 2:1-11, Matthew 21: 28-32) In 587 B.C. when the Babylonians conquered the Jews, destroyed their cities and their Temple, and made the Jews who were still alive after the conquest into their slaves, the Jews concluded they were being punished for the sins of previous generations. They complained that God was not fair. In today’s first reading from Ezekiel, God addresses the Jews in exile instructing them that their own refusal to hear God’s prophets and to follow God’s laws led them to the disaster they were suffering. But, God says, the situation was not hopeless. They could always turn back to God if they wanted. This reading prepares us for the gospel where we hear a similar message. If we have damaged our relationship with God, we can always turn back.

HOMILY – Jesus asks for our thoughts about the story we just heard in St. Matthew’s gospel. “What do you think of this? A man had two sons.” I do not want to confuse things, but I wonder if you remember another parable that begins: “A man had two sons.” This other parable is in St. Luke and if you do not know which one it is, it is the story of the prodigal son. The older son was an obedient and hard working son. The younger decided he wanted his share of the inheritance so he could get off the farm and go have lots of fun in the big city. After he spent all his inheritance, he realized what a fool he had made of himself and came home to a most loving and forgiving father. Today’s gospel from Matthew is somewhat similar. There are two sons. In Matthew’s story the father had a problem with both of his sons. However, the son who said “no” to his father realized he made a mistake and changed his mind. That is key to understanding both parables. The prodigal son and the son who told his father “I will not” in today’s gospel both had a change of heart. The son in today’s parable who said “no” to his father wasn’t as bad as the son who blew away half his father’s money. It may not sound like a big deal in today’s culture – a lot of kids have no trouble saying “no.” But when I was growing up, it was close to committing suicide to say “I will not” to my father. After his change of heart, the son was soon working side by side with his father in the vineyard and was back in his father’s good graces.

Jesus’ point, in both of these parables as in everything he taught us, is it’s never too late to change our mind if we have not been living the way God wants us to. Ezekiel had the same message in today’s first reading. He told the Jews in exile to take responsibility for what they did and stop making excuses or blaming someone else. We live in a world where anything we’ve ever done can come back to haunt us. If we were a goof off in school, if we got in trouble with the law, smoked pot, got a traffic ticket, had to declare bankruptcy, robbed a bank or whatever, it’s all there in someone’s memory and perhaps in public records. Especially if we tried to run for public office. The media would let the world know everything we did, and everything anyone related to us did as well. To some extent that makes sense. What a person did in the past tells a lot about their character and may be a predictor or what they’ll do in the future. It’s the only basis on which we can evaluate someone, to decide whether we want them as our president, or our friend or our doctor or financial advisor or someone we can trust with our children. But God judges us differently and that’s because he can see what kind of person we are right now. If we’ve been bad and decide to change, he sees our change of heart. Conversely, if we’ve been good and decide otherwise, he sees that too. Today’s gospel tells us no matter what we’ve done in the past, it’s where we are now that matters with God. It’s a message that brings healing and peace if we’ve made mistakes in the past (and who hasn’t because we’re all sinners). I have a little story to tell that I love. I got it from Scott Peck. There was a lady who claimed that Jesus was appearing to her. And she went to tell her bishop about it. He was skeptical and said he wanted some proof it was happening. So he told her that the next time Jesus appeared to her she was to ask Jesus what the bishop confessed the last time he went to confession. The next time she saw the bishop he asked her to report on what happened. Did she ask Jesus what the bishop said the last time he went to confession? She did ask she said. “And what did he answer?” the bishop asked. She said he forgot. Scott Peck said that was a genuine vision or the lady was a pretty smart cookie because that’s the way it is with God: when we repent and change our hearts, God forgets the past. It brings healing and peace to know that we can change and God gives us a chance to start over. The message in today’s gospel should also shake a few people out of their spiritual lethargy if they, like the son who didn’t show up at work, say to themselves it doesn’t matter how I live or what I do, God won’t notice. Yes God will.

As I conclude, let us return to another lesson from the parable of the prodigal son. There were two sons. Remember the older son was very responsible. He worked hard on the farm. He never did anything to displease his father, but he resented his father for welcoming his younger brother back and celebrating when he returned. The older son lacked compassion. God wants us to be responsible, hard working, obedient and faithful and we will be blessed. He wants us to say “yes” and be willing to follow him when he calls, that is the point of today’s gospel. He wants us to have a compassionate heart as well: “have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus,” St. Paul tells us in today’s second reading. When Jesus asks in today’s gospel: “What is your opinion?” he is asking what kind of son or daughter are you and am I. Are we like any of these sons we heard about today. Or are we like Christ, the faithful Son who always says “yes” to the Father and goes to work doing what he asks of us. If we’re lots of talk and offer lots of excuses and blame others for why we don’t do what God wants, God can see right through us and it will get us nowhere. If we’ve said “no” to the Father, we can change our mind. If we feel we’ve been pretty faithful to God throughout our lives, trying to always say “yes” and doing what God wants, then there are a few things we need to pray for: pray to be humble, thank him for the graces he’s given us, pray for the grace to remain close to him, pray for those who have forgotten about God and ask for a heart that does not hold grudges. Amen.

R. We see in Genesis 21: 9-10
    Sarah is jealous of Hagar's
    son playing with Isaac.

    Sarah asks Abraham to
    send Hagar and her
    son, Ishmael, away —

We see the jealousy in the
    scriptures
We see the division —
We see disobedience to God —

At the start
Eve is tempted, she was alone, satan tempted her —
        Eve gave in —
Eve wanted to be equal to God

    Eve went to Adam —
Adam and Eve both disobey God —

We see Cain in Chapter 4 of Genesis who
    shed his brother's blood —

God is all good —
We see the effects of sin —
We see the covenant God made —
God created an orderly,
    harmonious world — without sin!
God created the seen and the unseen —

God created out of nothing!!

Satan, is cunning —
    Satan makes good look evil
        and evil look good —

Satan tried to trick Eve —
    He wanted her disobedience
        to God to look okay!!
    Eve disobeyed God —
    Adam disobeyed God —

Sin entered the world —
The harmony was disturbed!

People see now with distorted
    vision —

There is now lust, envy, pride,
    jealousies, anger among
    human creatures —

They see with a distorted image —
Men can then, because of his
    distorted vision give into
    abandoning his call by God!!

Blame comes —

Failure to take responsibility for
    wrong doing —

Man has a wounded human nature

There is an attraction in wounded
    man toward sin —

grace  ←———————→  Sin

Matthew 23: 25

'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leave the inside full of extortion and intemperance. Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.

R. Cain is the firstborn of Adam and Eve —
Cain is jealous of Abel —
Abel is holy —
Cain lied to God —
Cain killed Abel

Then there is the scripture
    about Noah —

We see in the flood at the time
    of Noah —
    the prefiguring of the
    waters of baptism
    8 faithful people survive —

The corrupted perish

Noah planted a vineyard for wine!

Our heart is so important —
it is to be soft and loving

Rebekah, Isaac's wife,  was barren for more
    than 19 years

2 twin brothers were born

Luke 15: 1-3, 11-32

The lost son (the ‘prodigal’) and the dutiful son

The tax collectors and sinners, however, were all crowding round to listen to him, and the Pharisees and scribes complained saying, ‘This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ So he told them this parable:

Then he said, ‘There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, "Father, let me have the share of the estate that will come to me," So the father divided the property between them. A few days later, the younger son got together everything he had and left for a distant country where he squandered his money on a life of debauchery.

When he had spent it all, that country experienced a severe famine, and now he began to feel the pinch; so he hired himself out to one of the local inhabitants who put him on his farm to feed the pigs. And he would willingly have filled himself with the husks the pigs were eating but no one would let him have them. Then he came to his senses and said, "How many of my father’s hired men have all the food they want and more, and here am I dying of hunger! I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired men." So he left the place and went back to his father.

‘While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him. Then his son said, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son." But the father said to his servants, "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it; we will celebrate by having a feast, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and is found." And they began to celebrate.

‘Now the elder son was out in the fields, and on his way back, as he drew near the house, he could hear music and dancing. Calling one of the servants he asked what it was all about. The servant told him, "Your brother has come, and your father has killed the calf we had been fattening because he has got him back safe and sound." He was angry then and refused to go in, and his father came out and began to urge him to come in; but he retorted to his father, "All these years I have slaved for you and never once disobeyed any orders of yours, yet you never offered me so much as a kid for me to celebrate with my friends. But, for this son of yours, when he comes back after swallowing up your property—he and his loose women—you kill the calf we had been fattening."

‘The father said, "My son, you are with me always and all I have is yours. But it was only right we should celebrate and rejoice, because your brother here was dead and has come to life; he was lost and is found." ’

Ezekiel 18: 25-28

‘Now, you say, "What the Lord does is unjust." Now listen, House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is it not what you do that is unjust? When the upright abandons uprightness and does wrong and dies, he dies because of the wrong which he himself has done. Similarly, when the wicked abandons wickedness to become law–abiding and upright, he saves his own life. Having chosen to renounce all his previous crimes, he will most certainly live: he will not die.

                R. We have the Penitential Rite
                    at Mass — it is
                    so important to admit
out sins, with a contrite heart
so God will forgive us —

                Christ is our model —

Philippians 2: 1-11

So if in Christ there is anything that will move you, any incentive in love, any fellowship in the Spirit, any warmth or sympathy—I appeal to you, make my joy complete by being of a single mind, one in love, one in heart and one in mind. Nothing is to be done out of jealousy or vanity; instead, out of humility of mind everyone should give preference to others, everyone pursuing not selfish interests but those of others. Make your own the mind of Christ Jesus:

Who, being in the form of God,
did not count equality with God
something to be grasped.

But he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
becoming as human beings are;
and being in every way
    like a human being,
he was humbler yet,
even to accepting death,
    death on a cross.

And for this God raised him high,
and gave him the name
which is above all other names;

so that all beings
in the heavens, on earth
    and in the underworld,
should bend the knee at the name of Jesus
and that every tongue should acknowledge
Jesus Christ as Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

                R. God has chosen us to bear
                    fruit that will last!!

We are to help build the
                    Kingdom —
                    be likened to Christ —
                    not just be passive —
                    not just avoid big sins

Isaiah 5: 1-7

Let me sing my beloved
the song of my friend for his vineyard.

My beloved had a vineyard
on a fertile hillside.
He dug it, cleared it of stones,
and planted it with red grapes.
In the middle he built a tower,
he hewed a press there too.
He expected it to yield fine grapes:
wild grapes were all it yielded.

And now, citizens of Jerusalem
    and people of Judah,
I ask you to judge between me
    and my vineyard.
What more could I have done
    for my vineyard
that I have not done?
Why, when I expected it
    to yield fine grapes,
has it yielded wild ones?

Very well, I shall tell you
what I am going to do to my vineyard:
I shall take away its hedge,
for it to be grazed on,
and knock down its wall,
for it to be trampled on.
I shall let it go to waste, unpruned, undug,
overgrown by brambles
    and thorn–bushes,
and I shall command the clouds
to rain no rain on it.
Now, the vineyard of Yahweh Sabaoth
    is the House of Israel,
and the people of Judah
    the plant he cherished.
He expected fair judgement,
    but found injustice,
uprightness, but found cries of distress.

                R. God planted the vineyard
                    and the people didn't do
                    their part in helping to
                    get fruit for the Kingdom
                    that would last

Psalm 80: 9, 12-16, 19

you cleared a space for it,
it took root and filled the whole country.

Why have you broken down its fences?
Every passer–by plucks its grapes,
boars from the forest tear at it,
wild beasts feed on it.

God Sabaoth, come back, we pray,
look down from heaven and see,
visit this vine;
protect what your own hand has planted.
They have thrown it on the fire like dung,
the frown of your rebuke will destroy them.

God Sabaoth, bring us back,
let your face shine on us and we shall be safe.

                R. The vineyard of the Lord is
                    the house of Israel!

Philippians 4: 6-9

Never worry about anything; but tell God all your desires of every kind in prayer and petition shot through with gratitude, and the peace of God which is beyond our understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, let your minds be filled with everything that is true, everything that is honourable, everything that is upright and pure, everything that we love and admire—with whatever is good and praiseworthy.  Keep doing everything you learnt from me and were told by me and have heard or seen me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Matthew 21: 33-43

‘Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced it round, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, killed another and stoned a third. Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them thinking, “They will respect my son.” But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance.” So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ They answered, ‘He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him at the proper time.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures:

The stone which the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this is the Lord’s doing
and we marvel at it?

‘I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given

                R. We can reject Jesus, too, if
                    we choose —
                    It is foolish —

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 2, 2005 (excerpt)

...There is a some historical detail in today’s gospel: the servants, whom the owner of the vineyard sent to collect rent, refer to the prophets God sent to his people to call them to faithfulness to his law. But the prophets were rejected and even put to death. The son of the owner of the vineyard, of course, is Jesus who was rejected and put to death. Replacing the tenant farmers by others refers to Christ establishing his Church.

Although God is warning us in these stories of the dire consequences of being spiritually unproductive, there is a lot of love in these stories. In the first reading we heard of the loving attention of Isaiah’s friend to his vineyard, sparing no effort or expense in caring for his vines. But, especially in the gospel, we get a glimpse of God’s love that is beyond common sense. After the owner sent numerous servants to collect the rent and the servants were mistreated and killed, then he decides to send his son. And we ask, “how could he be so dense? Couldn’t he see what would happen?” But God’s love is beyond our understanding. And God keeps on loving us even to giving his own son for us. We celebrate that love now in our Eucharist and we thank God for never giving up on us. Amen.

31st Sunday Ordinary Time

October 30, 2005

HOMILY – Malachi and Jesus are dealing with the sinfulness of the religious leaders of their day. The priests in Malachi’s day were offering unworthy sacrifices to God and neglecting to teach the people how God wanted them to live. In Jesus’ day, the priests (also referred to as the Sadducees) received their share of condemnation from Jesus, but it seems the Pharisees and scholars of the law received the majority of Jesus’ criticism. The Pharisees were not priests, but lay leaders, trained in leading the people in Scripture study and in liturgy. They were not all bad people. Remember Nichodemas and Joseph of Arimathea were Pharisees. So was Paul who at first persecuted the followers of Christ but later became the great apostle to the nations. Some of their membership, as we hear in today’s gospel, were more interested in looking good rather than in being good. They were interested in using their position to bring glory upon themselves rather than to serve God’s people and to lead them to give glory to God. At any time in history we can find leaders, religious or not, who were good leaders or who abused their position. It happens in religion, any religion, and it happens in all levels of society and business. And the abuse of power manifests itself in many ways. It is especially distressing when it happens among religious leaders. They, above all people, should be models of holy living. When I was growing up, the biggest scandals I would hear about were when priests or nuns thought they were little gods, thinking they should be treated as if they were on a pedestal and the world should bow to their demands. That pedestal has crumbled. The Church’s voice of authority is simply ignored by many today. The scandal of priests abusing children and the way it was handled by the hierarchy has given the Church’s authority a serious blow in our own day. We must remember that society needs authority, and the church needs authority so it does not degenerate into anarchy. I can understand the feelings of those who have walked away from the Church because of some people’s abuse of power, but at the same time those who have walked away are missing a lot of good spiritual blessings because they have walked away. Jesus spoke very harshly of the punishment of those who cause scandal. It would be better for them if a great millstone were tied around their neck and they were thrown into the sea. Yet he also says to the people in today’s gospel about the Pharisees: “do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example.” It reminds me of a comment St. Theresa made about a spiritual director. She said she would rather have a learned priest as a spiritual director than a holy one. In other words, she figured she would get better guidance from one who knew what they were talking about than one who didn’t. Ideally, of course, the best arrangement would be to have one who was both learned and holy. It’s a goal I try to achieve in my own priesthood, but I know I do not always achieve it. I keep asking God’s forgiveness for my failures. I am grateful to know that God is a merciful God. In turn I ask forgiveness of anyone I may have let down here at St. Boniface.

Many of you are in positions of authority too, maybe in your work, maybe as parents. Did you ever think that in your close relationships you exercise a kind of authority over others too, because in those relationships you are an influence on another person for better or for worse. Let us, in our prayers, remember all people who have positions of leadership in whatever field they serve that they may use their position to serve well. And may you who influence others in whatever way lead those under your care to know the God of love and to follow him in a sincere way. May you, in all your dealings, be both wise and holy. Amen.

Matthew 6: 5

'And when you pray, do not imitate the hypocrites: they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them. In truth I tell you, they have had their reward.

Matthew 22: 18

But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to the test?

Matthew 23: 13

'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people's faces, neither going in yourselves nor allowing others to go in who want to.

                R. Good works if not related to
love of God is not as
                    God intends —
                    God wants inner conversion

                Sing: Ashes

                "Remember Man thou are
                    dust and unto dust thou
                    shalt return"

                Love of God
                Love of neighbor

                INNER CONVERSION

Joel 2: 12-18

'But now — declares Yahweh —
come back to me with all your heart,
fasting, weeping, mourning.'
Tear your hearts and not your clothes,
and come back to Yahweh your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger, rich in faithful love,
and he relents about inflicting disaster.
Who knows if he will not come back,
    relent
and leave a blessing behind him,
a cereal offering and a libation
to be presented to Yahweh your God?

Blow the ram's-horn in Zion!
Order a fast,
proclaim a solemn assembly,
call the people together,
summon the community,
assemble the elders,
gather the children,
even infants at the breast!
Call the bridegroom from his bedroom
and the bride from her bower!
Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh,
stand weeping between portico and altar,
saying, 'Spare your people, Yahweh!
Do not expose your heritage
   to the contempt,
to the sarcasm of the nations!
Why give the peoples cause to say,
"Where is their God?" '

Then, becoming jealous over his country,
Yahweh took pity on his people.

2 Corinthians 5: 20; 6:2

So we are ambassadors for Christ; it is as though God were urging you through us, and in the name of Christ we appeal to you to be reconciled to God.

As he said, 'At the time of my favour I have answered you; on the day of salvation I have helped you'; well, now is the real time of favour, now the day of salvation is here.

Sing: If Today you hear His
                    Voice Harden not your Hearts

                R. Conversion is what is
                    important —

                Not like the hypocrites
                    doing things for
                    others to see

                We need reconciliation
                    with God —

                We are to repent

There are 40 days of Lent!

                Adam sinned
                Adam was disobedient —

                Christ came with a generous
                    heart —

                Christ came our Savior —
Christ is the new Adam —

The devil tempted Eve in the
garden and she gave in —

After Jesus fasted for 40 days
the devil tried to tempt Jesus —

                    We see the transfigured Jesus
in the reading the second Sunday
                of Lent —

                    This is to encourage us
                to be reconciled —
to confess our sins and be
                forgiven

2 Timothy 1: 8-10

So you are never to be ashamed of witnessing to our Lord, or ashamed of me for being his prisoner; but share in my hardships for the sake of the gospel, relying on the power of God who has saved us and called us to be holy-not because of anything we ourselves had done but for his own purpose and by his own grace. This grace had already been granted to us, in Christ Jesus, before the beginning of time, but it has been revealed only by the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus. He has abolished death, and he has brought to light immortality and life through the gospel,

                R. Abraham had such faith —

Psalm 24: 1-6

To Yahweh belong the earth and all it contains,
the world and all who live there;
it is he who laid its foundations on the seas,
on the flowing waters fixed it firm.

Who shall go up to the mountain of Yahweh?
Who shall take a stand in his holy place?

The clean of hands and pure of heart,
whose heart is not set on vanities,
who does not swear an oath in order to deceive.

Such a one will receive blessing from Yahweh,
saving justice from the God of his salvation.
Such is the people that seeks him,
that seeks your presence, God of Jacob.                  Pause

Ephesians 5: 8-14

You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light, for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth. Try to discover what the Lord wants of you, take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are. The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of; but anything shown up by the light will be illuminated and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.

John 3: 14-21

as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert,
so must the Son of man be lifted up
    so that everyone who believes
may have eternal life in him.
For this is how God loved the world:
    he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
        may not perish
    but may have eternal life.
For God sent his Son into the world
    not to judge the world,
    but so that through him
        the world might be saved.
No one who believes in him
    will be judged;
    but whoever does not believe
        is judged already,
because that person does not believe
in the Name of God’s only Son.
    And the judgement is this:
though the light has come into the world
    people have preferred
    darkness to the light
    because their deeds were evil.
And indeed, everybody who does wrong
hates the light and avoids it,
    to prevent his actions
        from being shown up;
    but whoever does the truth
    comes out into the light,
so that what he is doing
may plainly appear as done in God.’

                Sing: Lift High the Cross

Guiding Light - Reflect on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light homily series - Reflect on the Word - Cycle B     The Word leaves an impression on our souls. In my thoughts and reflections are born a more tangible understanding of these eternal concepts presented in the Gospels and the readings. Anyone can read a sentence, but not anyone can absorb it's true meaning. Truth, in this day and age, is almost a matter of opinion or individual entitlement. We believe that Christ's truth is our Roman Catholic Church. We, as priests, champion it's teachings; we are ambassadors for the Pope and Christ to those faces looking at us. We are the light by which our congregation reads to reflect upon real truth and we do it hand in hand. $15

Guiding Light - Steadfast to the Son
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle A of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light homily series - Steadfast to the Son - Cycle A    The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle C of the Liturgical Year

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle C of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul - Cycle C    In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15

Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word - Cycle B    At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15

Guiding Light - The Word Alive in Our Hearts
Inspiring Homilies covering partial year of Cycle A by Fr. Joe Robinson

Guiding Light - The Word Alive in Our Hearts. - Cycle A (partial)    Homilies by the Reverend Joe Robinson given at St. Boniface Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a tremendous honor Fr. Priestly Newsletter 2000 Issue 1
Audio CD - Read by Father Edward J. Carter
$ 10.00  plus postage

Priestly Newsletter - 2000 #1 - CD. - Christ is Our Strength - Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. It is so beautiful. "This brief passage contains one of the greatest lessons of the spiritual life. As we progress along our spiritual journey, we become increasingly aware of how weak we are in our-selves, but how strong we are in Christ. To experience our weakness involves suffering. The degree and kind of suffering can vary. The suffering can include the experience of the classical dark night of the spirit as described by St. John of the Cross. One of the main purposes of the dark night is to make a person keenly aware of his or her helplessness without God." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10

Priestly Newsletter - 2000 #2 - CD. - Suffering: A Source of Life - Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. Fr. Carter knew suffering that year. His voice is so powerful as he read each Newsletter from his heart and soul. "Every man has his own share in the redemption. Each one is also called to share in that suffering through which the redemption was accomplished. He is called to share in that suffering through which all human suffering has also been redeemed. In bringing about the redemption through suffering, Christ has also raised human suffering to the level of the redemption. Thus each man in his suffering can also become a sharer in the redemptive suffering of Christ..." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10
