Readings from Today

Genesis 9: 8-15

God spoke as follows to Noah and his sons, ‘I am now establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants to come, and with every living creature that was with you: birds, cattle and every wild animal with you; everything that came out of the ark, every living thing on earth. And I shall maintain my covenant with you: that never again shall all living things be destroyed by the waters of a flood, nor shall there ever again be a flood to devastate the earth.’

‘And this’, God said, ‘is the sign of the covenant which I now make between myself and you and every living creature with you for all ages to come: I now set my bow in the clouds and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I gather the clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I shall recall the covenant between myself and you and every living creature, in a word all living things, and never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all living things.

Psalm 25

ADORATION I offer, Yahweh,
to you, my God.

BUT in my trust in you do not put me to shame,
let not my enemies gloat over me.

CALLING to you, none shall ever be put to shame,
but shame is theirs who groundlessly break faith.

DIRECT me in your ways, Yahweh,
and teach me your paths.

ENCOURAGE me to walk in your truth and teach me
since you are the God who saves me.

FOR my hope is in you all day long—
such is your generosity, Yahweh.
GOODNESS and faithful love have been yours for ever,
Yahweh, do not forget them.

HOLD not my youthful sins against me,
but remember me as your faithful love dictates.

INTEGRITY and generosity are marks of Yahweh
for he brings sinners back to the path.

JUDICIOUSLY he guides the humble,
instructing the poor in his way.

KINDNESS unfailing and constancy mark all Yahweh’s paths,
for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

LET my sin, great though it is, be forgiven,
Yahweh, for the sake of your name.

MEN who respect Yahweh, what of them?
He teaches them the way they must choose.
NEIGHBOURS to happiness will they live,
and their children inherit the land.
ONLY those who fear Yahweh have his secret
and his covenant, for their understanding.

PERMANENTLY my eyes are on Yahweh,
for he will free my feet from the snare.
QUICK, turn to me, pity me,
alone and wretched as I am!

RELIEVE the distress of my heart,
bring me out of my constraint.

SPARE a glance for my misery and pain,
take all my sins away.

TAKE note how countless are my enemies,
how violent their hatred for me.
UNLESS you guard me and rescue me
I shall be put to shame, for you are my refuge.
VIRTUE and integrity be my protection,
for my hope, Yahweh, is in you.

Ransom Israel, O God,
from all its troubles.

1 Peter 3: 18-22

Christ himself died once and for all for sins, the upright for the sake of the guilty, to lead us to God. In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life, and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison. They refused to believe long ago, while God patiently waited to receive them, in Noah’s time when the ark was being built. In it only a few, that is eight souls, were saved through water. It is the baptism corresponding to this water which saves you now—not the washing off of physical dirt but the pledge of a good conscience given to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has entered heaven and is at God’s right hand, with angels, ruling forces and powers subject to him.

Mark 1: 12-15

And at once the Spirit drove him into the desertland he remained there for forty days, and was put to the test by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels looked after him.

Messenger:     Jesus said people can become
pathological liars and I don't know
what that is. But I know this.
People in a dysfunctional family, many
times are sworn to secrecy to continue
the dysfunction in the family setting and
                    present a pure untainted picture
to the world (outside the house) with alcohol and drugs.
The alcoholic or drug addict's behavior
is totally unpredictable and the enabler
                    is controlled by the unpredictable
                    alcoholic or user.

Unpredictability of one pulling the strings
another dancing to their step like one leading
the dance, the alcoholic leads, the enabler follows
priding themselves on their ability to rescue and
help the sick alcoholic who uses and maybe destroying
the family life. They (the alcoholic) are practiced in their
methods of trying to make the enabler responsible
for them. They begin the dance, the
enabler runs to the dance floor,
the alcoholic leads, the mind of the enabler
so focused on the steps, somewhere down the
line the enabler begins to forget about their
own spiritual growth. They can begin working
outside themselves, rescuing, looking for solutions
for the alcoholic to change. Thinking to themselves
all their answers for their happiness, for spiritual
freedom lies in fixing their alcoholic mate, son,
                    daughter, whatever.

If your own recovery you think depends on
another, one must face the fact that we come into
this world by ourselves (disregarding a twin, etc.) and
we usually die by ourselves at the appointed time.

We all  have weaknesses of the flesh due
to original sin, the concupiscence of the flesh,

7 Capital Sins
Pride, Greed, Envy, Wrath, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth

Our lives are to be lived in learning to love
God and each other, in building these skills
that we are being molded more and more into
the image and likeness of Christ. To be likened
to Christ this is our goal, to follow the new
Adam and the new Eve this is our quest for
                   happiness - to seek God.

Song: Your Love is Finer than Life

Psalm 63

God, you are my God, I pine for you;
my heart thirsts for you,
my body longs for you,
as a land parched, dreary and waterless.
Thus I have gazed on you in the sanctuary,
seeing your power and your glory.

Better your faithful love than life itself;
my lips will praise you.
Thus I will bless you all my life,
in your name lift up my hands.
All my longings fulfilled as with fat and rich foods,
a song of joy on my lips and praise in my mouth.

On my bed when I think of you,
I muse on you in the watches of the night,
for you have always been my help;
in the shadow of your wings I rejoice;
my heart clings to you,
your right hand supports me.

May those who are hounding me to death
go down to the depths of the earth,
given over to the blade of the sword,
and left as food for jackals.
Then the king shall rejoice in God,
all who swear by him shall gain recognition,
for the mouths of liars shall be silence

Messenger:   God made a covenant with man.
God had Noah build an ark.
God gives us His holy Church.
God gives us Himself in the Eucharist.
God gives us His Mother Mary, our
spiritual mother, Mother of the Church.

What is life in the Spirit?

From baptism we receive a special sharing in His life
that the spirit dwells abundantly in the
                           graced soul.

So many people are trying to connect with
this love affair with God in the standoffish
                       intellectual-bookish way.

Now how would you like a lover like that?

You dress with the puffy dress, the scent
of lilac, the smell of apple pie or aroma
in the home, the crystal china on the
table, the candle light and he comes
with a set of wrenches to explain some
intellectual "gizmo", that will be the mood
of your evening from his side.

...For when you've set the mood the
perfect romantic evening, the other comes
to the door with an intellectual theses
of the workings of the Atom.

Jesus speaks:   I am love, I am the author of love.
My Heart is a burning fire of endless love.
My letters are sweet love letters,
                           simply stated, yet so profound.

The gift I give to you is Myself in the Eucharist,
the gift I give to you is the song
of the heart, the touch of the baby,
the smiles of the little ones, the
eyes of the six month olds watching you,
                       yeah, watching you, teach them
about Me and My Mother - I am
sick to the Heart for you do not
know Me, nor My ways, many of you.

For many put Me in a box marked "God"
and they deal with Me this way,
                           not like a Person
and I love you so dearly.

I want a relationship with you.

I am the bridegroom of your soul.

My Heart is consumed with love for you -

March 5, 2006 message continues

Jesus speaks:  I give you the bird to sing the song
                           of love to you.

I give you the sunlight to light your day -
to shine with gleaming radiance on your
                           beautiful hair.

I give you the soft rain on a hot summer
afternoon to cool you and dance with
steps of joy on the flower's petals and
a thirsty drink for the old dried-up tree.

You in your high-faluten ways many
of you, put Me in your "God" box and
tell yourselves about how I am.

I write these letters in God's Blue Books and
My Daily Messages to tell you how I
really am which is not the way many
                           of you think.

I am tired of being ignored.

I am tired of being treated like a dead
                           object by many.

I say to you, "I am alive",
"I am alive", "I am alive"!!

Spread My letters of love that the
world that is hungry will know
                           how I really am.

                       Song: God's Love

Jesus speaks:     And the light steals across the sky
that you can read the blind scripture
in John but ask yourself if you really
                       get it yet,

And you can read the scripture
on the 5th Sunday of Lent about Lazarus
coming out of the tomb, when will
                       you understand.

And I took them to the top of the
mountain and I was transfigured before them
and you say, "Well Jesus, some of you,
if I control this person or that one then
                       I'll be happy.
"

And I write to you the miracles in My
Word and you go somewhere else for your
answers. I am a God of miracles.
I give you Myself in the Eucharist that
you will be changed and radiant, filled
with grace and pure more likened to
                       Me -

Let Me tell you a little story.
There was an old dog that lived in
a little house in the back yard with
a red roof and the sign on the house
said dog house. Now every day
the owner's small boy went to the
house and said "Now dog there are
no friends on this street for me to talk
to, talk to me." And the old dog
barked and made a whiney sound
of affection but nary did he speak
a word to the little lad.

And the owner, the little boy's dad came
out one morning and he said
"Son, dogs don't talk, I am sorry."

Now I give you a special sharing in My life
                           through baptism, I elevated your
knowing and loving capacity to great
heights in sharing in My life and
many never even ponder the Divine
                           Mysteries -

They (many) try to read Me like a book or
treat Me like a thing in
                           a box.

When I give you this great sharing
in My life it is out of the
greatest love for you, but you
don't even spend even a little time
with Me many of you, because you
are too busy and treat Me like
I am not even a Person who loves
                           you dearly.

God the Father says:  "Son for all eternity the Trinity
wants to lavishly pour out gifts and
                                   love to you."

Jesus speaks:      Oh you silly ones - you just don't
get it, many, many of you and I write to
you here to tell you and you won't pay
any attention to Me - My Blue Books
are My gifts to you the Mighty Medicine
                       to the sick world.

                       Dogs love bones.

You were created by God and only that
                           begging heart of yours
                           created by God can be
                           satisfied by Him.

Song: God's Love

To The Reader

Jesus wants to share His love with you. He comes in these letters to tell you how you can be in intimate union with Him.

All of us possess everything we need to have an intimate union with Him. He has written to me since October of 1991. For at least a year I sat in front of the tabernacle and begged him to talk to me. I wanted words. I prayed to the Holy Spirit and begged and begged Him to baptize me. After a long and seemingly endless search, trying to hear God, He told me to "feed the hungry." For six weeks this was all I heard. I thought maybe I wasn't feeding my children well or eating well enough myself. What a long wait for three words! At long last one day, as I was writing to Jesus, I received a letter back. He told me, "I am Jesus, Son of the Living God." I did not want to write this but it kept coming-and so many other messages. I knew nothing of anyone getting messages. I wrote them, reluctantly, and hid my notebooks. The letters kept coming-a lot in the night-and I would be awakened by long letters which I felt compelled to get up and write down. I read these letters privately and my life began to change. I felt a new life within me.

He taught me of His fervent love and how truly present He was. He taught me how precious I was to Him. Over and over again He would call me His precious child and tell me how He loved me, how He clothed me with dignity and honor. He told me over and over how He was right by my side always. He is teaching me to give up all fear and to trust in Him. He is teaching me to let go of myself and let Him run my life. I am trying every day to do His will.

He is also telling you in your heart all you need to know. He has all the answers for you there in your heart. You must be silent and go to Him so you can hear His words for you.

Sit in front of the tabernacle and be with Him. Sit and be open and just be with Him. Read these letters there. These are Jesus' love letters to you. Sit in front of the tabernacle and let Him talk to you. Sit silent awhile. Read these letters part of the time. Open any page and He will talk to you. Do not read this like a book, cover to cover. Just open to a page and read that page. That is the way He speaks to you.

March 5, 2006 message continues

Jesus speaks:  The dog will not talk,
but you can share abundantly in
                           My life through baptism and
                           your loving and knowing
                           capacity is elevated -

Come to Me and share My love.

                       Teach others about Love!!

Messenger:      In writing about the God "box" I
had a vision of a box that said
"God box" on it and one of the things
that Jesus is referring to is that He
does not want us to throw the idea
of God off to something on the side,
like every time we think something
of God we throw the thoughts in an
                           exterior box marked "God box"
                           something not within me.

Now baptism is such a gift
because God gives us a sharing
in His life: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
dwell within, within the graced soul.
God IN us. God dwelling in us.

Now you see how silly it is for the child
to expect the dog to talk and yet if the dog
could share in the talking capacity
of a human person how silly for the
dog not to use it. But God gives to
us this tremendous gift through baptism
of His life within the graced soul
of this elevated knowing and loving capacity,
the baptized Christian has and many
                           do not even realize this.

Jesus speaks:   I give you the gift of baptism.
I am the Way, the Truth and the Life,
I dwell abundantly in your graced soul.
Now I say to you, ponder this analogy.
                       The analogy of this message.

You think of the enabling spouse, the
one being blinded by the sickness
of the alcoholic user, the one wanting
a way out of their box filled with pain
but addicted in a small way to the
                       rescuing techniques they have learned
to fill their minds some with a
prideful motive "I am better than
the alcoholic." "He needs me and
he is not as good as me."

They do the dance of his steps daily
as the sickness may control their
lives and many children in these scenarios
                       may have many unmet needs
                       because the enabler dances to
the dance of the user priding themselves
on how the user needs them
and the alcoholic may drink away and
away and away while the enabler
                       takes responsibility for the problems
that are created from the users habits.

A user comes and cries to help him
to someone who may not understand
the alcoholic dance, for he or she becomes
a pro at their mask behavior which
happens frequently in the secrets of any
                       dysfunction.

                           In dysfunctional homes in relationships
that are not healthy where one needs
to rescue (for their own prideful power)
and the other is some stance is made by
some form of control, needy. The
                       rescuer goes to work. Manipulating
possibly, keeping the other at bay
using some form of control, creating
                       problems in other places, whatever
it takes for them to have this rescuing
role which gives them a sense of
power, satisfaction in helping the other
who must of course have many problems
for the rescuer to indulge in his habits
and puff up his foolish pride.

The bottom line is this when
relationships have failed causing tremendous hurt
there must be a process of recovery to continue
in a foolish dialogue with oneself
stuffing the pain acting wisely they
think, for those involved may affect
                       others connected with the individual
as the anger from the lack of forgiveness
of the hurt relationship "surfaces" and
is acted out on unrelated others
in their lives. Forgiveness in all
relationships is vital to the spiritual
life for lack of forgiveness acts like
a jumping monkey when the anger
arises in the unforgiving party, his
monkey jumps on an innocent other
while he once again prides himself
on how he had no need of recovery and
                       forgiveness in the hurtful relationship
for he pridefully states "I am above
                       this".

In watching cartoons, one can see
easily how the 7 deadly sins come
into play as animated figures many
times show anger, evil, good, jealousy
and yet you do not see in your own
lives how you block the Father's will
giving into the weaknesses you have
                       toward jealousy, envy, greed, lustfulness,
                       slothfulness, anger ...
and lying to yourselves and others
with your hand in the cookie jar.

                           Transferring your anger onto innocent
others, lying, seeing yourself as spotless
must be addressed for it will act
like an evil seed in your heart
that can soon open a door to
greater evil and greater sin. Once
sin is a practice with your consent and
you begin to lie about its evilness
because of your desire for perfection
(letting all think you are perfect
                       at all cost, etc.) -

Lying about the truth is like a big
boulder in a room - no matter
what you want to do in the room
the boulder takes up most of it.

I want to fill you with My grace.

I want to be one in you and
                       operate from your heart.

I fill you with Myself and your
heart knows more why you were created.

Lies can grow bigger and bigger.
Open a door to evil and it is like
opening a door in a down pouring rain.

John 1: 8-10 - 2: 1-2

If we say, ‘We have no sin,’
we are deceiving ourselves,
and truth has no place in us;
if we acknowledge our sins,
he is trustworthy and upright,
so that he will forgive our sins
and will cleanse us from all evil.
If we say, ‘We have never sinned,’
we make him a liar,
and his word has no place in us.

My children, I am writing this
    to prevent you from sinning;
but if anyone does sin,
we have an advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ, the upright.
He is the sacrifice to expiate our sins,
and not only ours,
but also those of the whole world.

March 5, 2006 message continues

Jesus speaks: Go to the priests and tell them your
                       sins.

The priest has the power to forgive your sins.
If he does not say it ask him
to forgive all the sins of your
                           past life.

                       Make a good Confession.

Ask yourself how you were jealous,
angry, envious, how you try to
manipulate others for your own power
because you may have lost power
                       in one situation, work, husband,
                       life, children.

Did you try to get that power
                       back from another situation where
it was not God's will only to make
                       yourself feel superior.

                       Do you obey authority, observe
                       structure, argue to be right,
blocking what needs to be done.

Do you like control for control sake,
more interested in your own power
rather than the good of My Kingdom.

When you leave the confessional and
you have made a good confession,
telling your sins, not trying to
                       make yourself right once again
                       when you really were wrong,
How good does that feel -
                       you receive tremendous grace from
a good confession to help you not to sin.

Sing the Song:  Be Not Afraid

Jesus speaks:  Tell the Truth.

If you were in the habit of telling yourself
you were sinless you know you must
                       examine your conscience.

Lying to yourself blocks your union with Me.
After confession, pray for grace to be holy.

                           When problems occur with others
                           pray for them.

                        I give you the sacraments.
                        I give you My Church.
                        I give you the priest.
I outpour My grace in the sacraments.

John 9: 1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38

As he went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.

Having said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blind man, and said to him, ‘Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam’ (the name means ‘one who has been sent’). So he went off and washed and came back able to see. His neighbours and the people who used to see him before (for he was a beggar) said, ‘Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?’ Some said, ‘Yes, it is the same one.’ Others said, ‘No, but he looks just like him.’ The man himself said, ‘Yes, I am the one.’

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. It had been a Sabbath day when Jesus made the paste and opened the man’s eyes, so when the Pharisees asked him how he had gained his sight, he said, ‘He put a paste on my eyes, and I washed, and I can see.’ Then some of the Pharisees said, ‘That man cannot be from God: he does not keep the Sabbath.’ Others said, ‘How can a sinner produce signs like this?’ And there was division among them. So they spoke to the blind man again, ‘What have you to say about him yourself, now that he has opened your eyes?’ The man answered, ‘He is a prophet.’

They retorted, ‘Are you trying to teach us, and you a sinner through and through ever since you were born!’ And they ejected him.

Jesus heard they had ejected him, and when he found him he said to him, ‘Do you believe in the Son of man?’ ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘tell me who he is so that I may believe in him.’ Jesus said, ‘You have seen him; he is speaking to you.’ The man said, ‘Lord, I believe,’ and worshipped him.

John 11: 1-45

There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he was ill. It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair. The sisters sent this message to Jesus, ‘Lord, the man you love is ill.’ On receiving the message, Jesus said, ‘This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God’s glory so that through it the Son of God may be glorified.’

Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, yet when he heard that he was ill he stayed where he was for two more days before saying to the disciples, ‘Let us go back to Judaea.’ The disciples said, ‘Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going back there again?’ Jesus replied:
Are there not twelve hours in the day?
No one who walks in the daytime
      stumbles,
   having the light of this world to see by;
anyone who walks around at night
      stumbles,
having no light as a guide.

He said that and then added, ‘Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Lord, if he is at rest he will be saved.’ Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by ‘rest’ he meant ‘sleep’; so Jesus put it plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead; and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.’ Then Thomas—known as the Twin—said to the other disciples, ‘Let us also go to die with him.’

On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already. Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died, but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said:

   I am the resurrection.
   Anyone who believes in me,
even though that person dies, will live,
and whoever lives and believes in me
      will never die.
   Do you believe this?

‘Yes, Lord,’ she said, ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’

When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, ‘The Master is here and wants to see you.’ Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him. Jesus had not yet come into the village; he was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed, and with a profound sigh he said, ‘Where have you put him?’ They said, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept; and the Jews said, ‘See how much he loved him!’ But there were some who remarked, ‘He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not have prevented this man’s death?’ Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening. Jesus said, ‘Take the stone away.’ Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to him, ‘Lord, by now he will smell; this is the fourth day since he died.’ Jesus replied, ‘Have I not told you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?’ So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said:

   Father, I thank you
       for hearing my prayer.
I myself knew that you hear me always,
   but I speak
for the sake of all these
      who are standing around me,
   so that they may believe
it was you who sent me.

When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, let him go free.’

Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him

John 3: 14-21

as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert,
so must the Son of man be lifted up
so that everyone who believes
may have eternal life in him.
For this is how God loved the world:
he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
    may not perish
but may have eternal life.
For God sent his Son into the world
not to judge the world,
but so that through him
   the world might be saved.
No one who believes in him
    will be judged;
but whoever does not believe
    is judged already,
because that person does not believe
in the Name of God’s only Son.
And the judgement is this:
though the light has come into the world
people have preferred
darkness to the light
because their deeds were evil.
And indeed, everybody who does wrong
hates the light and avoids it,
to prevent his actions
    from being shown up;
but whoever does the truth
comes out into the light,
so that what he is doing
may plainly appear as done in God.’

Romans  5: 1-2, 5-8

So then, now that we have been justified by faith, we are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; it is through him, by faith, that we have been admitted into God’s favour in which we are living, and look forward exultantly to God’s glory.

and a hope which will not let us down, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. When we were still helpless, at the appointed time, Christ died for the godless. You could hardly find anyone ready to die even for someone upright; though it is just possible that, for a really good person, someone might undertake to die. So it is proof of God’s own love for us, that Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

Sing:  Come to the Water

Exodus  17: 3-7

But tormented by thirst, the people complained to Moses. ‘Why did you bring us out of Egypt,’ they said, ‘only to make us, our children and our livestock, die of thirst?’ Moses appealed to Yahweh for help. ‘How am I to deal with this people?’ he said. ‘Any moment now they will stone me! ’Yahweh then said to Moses, ‘Go on ahead of the people, taking some of the elders of Israel with you; in your hand take the staff with which you struck the River, and go. I shall be waiting for you there on the rock (at Horeb). Strike the rock, and water will come out for the people to drink.’ This was what Moses did, with the elders of Israel looking on. He gave the place the names Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites’ contentiousness and because they put Yahweh to the test by saying, ‘Is Yahweh with us, or not?’

Exodus  20: 1-17

Then God spoke all these words. He said, ‘I am Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, where you lived as slaves.

‘You shall have no other gods to rival me.

‘You shall not make yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything in heaven above or on earth beneath or in the waters under the earth.

‘You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God and I punish a parent’s fault in the children, the grandchildren, and the great–grandchildren among those who hate me; but I act with faithful love towards thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

‘You shall not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, for Yahweh will not leave unpunished anyone who misuses his name.

‘Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath for Yahweh your God. You shall do no work that day, neither you nor your son nor your daughter nor your servants, men or women, nor your animals nor the alien living with you. For in six days Yahweh made the heavens, earth and sea and all that these contain, but on the seventh day he rested; that is why Yahweh has blessed the Sabbath day and made it sacred.

‘Honour your father and your mother so that you may live long in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you.

   ‘You shall not kill.

   ‘You shall not commit adultery.

   ‘You shall not steal.

‘You shall not give false evidence against your neighbour.

‘You shall not set your heart on your neighbour’s house. You shall not set your heart on your neighbour’s spouse, or servant, man or woman, or ox, or donkey, or any of your neighbour’s possessions.’

Messenger:    God tests us.

Genesis  22, 1-2, 9-13, 15-18

It happened some time later that God put Abraham to the test. ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ he called. ‘Here I am,’ he replied. God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, your beloved Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, where you are to offer him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I shall point out to you.’?

When they arrived at the place which God had indicated to him, Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he bound his son and put him on the altar on top of the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.

But the angel of Yahweh called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ he said. ‘Here I am,’ he replied. ‘Do not raise your hand against the boy,’ the angel said. ‘Do not harm him, for now I know you fear God. You have not refused me your own beloved son.’ Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

The angel of Yahweh called Abraham a second time from heaven. ‘I swear by my own self, Yahweh declares, that because you have done this, because you have not refused me your own beloved son, I will shower blessings on you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will gain possession of the gates of their enemies. All nations on earth will bless themselves by your descendants, because you have obeyed my command.’
