Jesus told me how to set up
the retreat.
Recently a Jesuit told me about
a book by John Hardon, S.J.
I quote some of this book
Retreat with the Lord
A Popular Guide to the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola
by John A. Hardon, S.J.
pp. 9-10
What Are the Spiritual Exercises?
IN HIS OWN WORDS, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are a carefully planned "method of examination of conscience, of meditation, of vocal and mental prayer, and of other spiritual activities." This describes the Spiritual Exercises in terms of what they consist of or what the person making the Exercises is expected to do. Their purpose is also identified by their author. They are a "way of preparing and disposing the soul to rid itself of all inordinate attachments and, after their removal, of seeking and finding the will of God in the disposition of our life for the salvation of our soul."
Ignatius compares the Spiritual Exercises to bodily exercises like "taking a walk, journeying on foot, and running." The comparison is useful. We take bodily exercise in order to strengthen the bodily muscles, our bodily circulation, and the function of the heart. So the Spiritual Exercises are meant to strengthen our faculties of the soul, to enlighten the mind, and inspire the will to operate more effectively.
Moreover, and more importantly, the Spiritual Exercises have a definite goal. They are to help us remove our sinful addictions, as we may call them. Once these are removed, the Exercises are to dispose us to want to learn what God expects of us, discover his will, and then determine to put it into practice.
The expression "want to learn" is not casual. Our bad habits are not only ingrained through frequent yielding to our fallen human nature. They blind us to even recognizing that we have bad inclinations. The Exercises therefore have as their first purpose to open our eyes to our own sorry condition. With God's grace, they enable us to want to look at the humiliating side of ourselves. Unless we recognize our moral weakness, we will lack the humility necessary to cooperate with the grace of God. This is no small matter because our natural bent is to see what is praiseworthy in our character and to admire our own virtues.
...In other words, we should aim at obtaining a balanced perspective of our relationship with God.
...This should not be surprising because what most obscures our seeing the will of God is preoccupation with our own will.
Note that Ignatius does not leave this "will of God" in the abstract. He says that we are to find the divine will "in the disposition of our life for the salvation of our soul." This means that we are to find out how God wants us to dispose, that is, arrange or organize our life in order to reach heaven.end of excerpt

Preparatory Prayer
The examination of conscience is
so important.
Of looking deep within ourselves and
seeing bad habits and praying
for grace to see — grace to change,
grace to do God's will and to
not act willfully against God's will.
Constantly looking within to be
more pure.
The incarnation goes on in us.
Here is today's Gospel.
Luke 1: 39-56
Mary set out at that time and went as quickly as she could into the hill country to a town in Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. Now it happened that as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? Look, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.’
And Mary said:
My soul proclaims
the greatness of the Lord
and my spirit rejoices
in God my Saviour;
because he has looked upon
the humiliation of his servant.
Yes, from now onwards
all generations will call me blessed,
for the Almighty
has done great things for me.
Holy is his name,
and his faithful love extends age after age
to those who fear him.
He has used the power of his arm,
he has routed the arrogant of heart.
He has pulled down princes
from their thrones
and raised high the lowly.
He has filled the starving with good things,
sent the rich away empty.
He has come to the help
of Israel his servant,
mindful of his faithful love
—according to the promise
he made to our ancestors—
of his mercy to Abraham
and to his descendants for ever.Mary stayed with her some three months and then went home.
