Today's Readings

Amos 3: 1-8; 4: 11-12

Listen, Israelites, to this prophecy which Yahweh pronounces against you, against the whole family which I brought up from Egypt:
    You alone have I intimately known of all the families of earth, that is why I shall punish you for all your wrong-doings.

Do two people travel together unless they have agreed to do so?
Does the lion roar in the forest if it has no prey? Does the young lion growl in his lair if it has caught nothing?
Does a bird fall on the ground in a net unless a trap has been set for it? Will the net spring up from the ground without catching something?
Does the trumpet sound in the city without the people being alarmed? Does misfortune come to a city if Yahweh has not caused it?

No indeed, Lord Yahweh does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.
The lion roars: who is not afraid? Lord Yahweh has spoken: who will not prophesy?

I overturned you as God overturned Sodom and Gomorrah; you were like a brand snatched from the blaze and still you would not come back to me -declares Yahweh.

So this, Israel, is what I plan to do to you. Because I am going to do this to you, Israel, prepare to meet your God!

 

Psalm 5: 4-8 

You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil,
    no sinner can be your guest.
Boasters cannot stand their ground
under your gaze.

You hate evil-doers,
    liars you destroy;
the violent and deceitful
    Yahweh detests.

But, so great is your faithful love,
    I may come into your house,
and before your holy temple
    bow down in reverence of you.

In your saving justice, Yahweh, lead me,
    because of those who lie in wait for me;
make your way plain before me.

 

Matthew 8: 23-27

The calming of the storm

Then he got into the boat followed by his disciples. Suddenly a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But he was asleep. So they went to him and woke him saying, ‘Save us, Lord, we are lost!’ And he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened, you who have so little faith?’ And then he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. They were astounded and said, ‘Whatever kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?’

 

R. Jesus fell asleep in the boat and the Apostles
    were afraid of the storm.

Jesus rebuked them when they woke Him
    for their lack of faith –

Jesus calmed the winds and the storm –

 

Philippians 4: 13

There is nothing I cannot do in the One who strengthens me.

                HAPPINESS IS AN INSIDE JOB —

                Getting heart purified for eternity —

                Working on our heart to be like Jesus.

                Do God's will

                Don't be a rival to God's will —

                We will be judged on how we loved —

                Heaven is for lovers —

                Motivated to be intimate with Jesus —

                Jesus is truth —
                Living in the truth —
                    not distorted vision about God
                    not distorted vision about others
                    not distorted vision about ourselves

                Motivated to please the Father —

                Pleasing God is loving

                Being obedient
                Being a servant
                Preparing ourselves for heaven —

                We are tested —

                Like in school —

                When you flunk the life
                    test mortally it is
                    eternal damnation —

                When you pass the life
                    test with great victory
                    the reward is heaven!!

                What a reward for loving!!

                The devil wants our soul —

                What good does it do a man
                    to learn to deceive
                    himself and hurt others
                    in punishment —
                    He sets up his own punishment —

                God created us with a Plan —

                Everything has brought us to
                    where we are today —

                To love God's plan for us —

                To be united with God's plan
                    NOT Rebel against it!!
                    Not be a rival to God's plan!

                    with God's grace —

                    changes and
                    choose life —

                Love never runs out

                We are to have goal —> to do God's will

                Act as God wants —

1 John 4:17-21

Love comes to its perfection in us when we can face the Day of Judgement fearlessly, because even in this world we have become as he is. In love there is no room for fear, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear implies punishment and no one who is afraid has come to perfection in love. Let us love, then, because he first loved us. Anyone who says 'I love God' and hates his brother, is a liar, since whoever does not love the brother whom he can see cannot love God whom he has not seen. Indeed this is the commandment we have received from him, that whoever loves God, must also love his brother.

                    He is helping us to be so

                Sin is not private —

                There were hundreds of seminarians
                    in 1929

                Now — not very many —

                God's Movement for us
                    to pray for
                    priests, the Church
                    and the world —

                To be holy like the
                    Virgin Mary
 

                Handmaids
                Servants for God
                Jesus served the Father

                No sin is private

                April 10, 2011

 

Matthew 8: 23-27

Then he got into the boat followed by his disciples. Suddenly a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But he was asleep. So they went to him and woke him saying, ‘Save us, Lord, we are lost!’ And he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened, you who have so little faith?’ And then he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. They were astounded and said, ‘Whatever kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?’

   

                R. Jesus falls asleep in boat —

                There is a storm in our life
                    we may think Jesus doesn't
                    listen — like the apostles when
                    He is sleeping in the boat —

                Full of terror — we continue through
                    the storm —

                Jesus can calm the storm in a moment —
                Let go to Him —

                Pray and wait on His time —
                He is the Almighty —

                When we have done all we can with
                    storms in our lives — we
                    remember this scripture and
                    remember He can calm the
                    storm in an instant —

                We may feel like the Apostles —
                    feel we can drown and
                    yet we know —
                    God is with us —

                God has power over the storms —

                We can focus on God who is
                    almighty —

                In the miracles of Jesus when
                    on earth we see the power
                    of God —

                Be calm —

                Breathe in the name Jesus —

Matthew 14: 22-33  

And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sent the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was a head–wind. In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea, and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost,’ they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It’s me! Don’t be afraid.’ It was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said, ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’ Jesus said, ‘Come.’ Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord,’ he cried, ‘save me!’ Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘You have so little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’ And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God.’

    

                R. We have to be faith-filled

                We have to let go and know God
                    is with us —

                We focus on Your might, oh God —

                Pray to the Holy Spirit —

                Know God's presence

                God has power over the spirits — 

                Jesus shows us He cast out
                    demons —

                Meditating on the power of Jesus —
                Meditating on the power God gives the priest —

                Believing in this gift God gives us
