Today's Readings
Exodus 19: 1-2, 9-11, 16-20
Three months to the day after leaving Egypt, the Israelites reached the desert of Sinai. Setting out from Rephidim, they reached the desert of Sinai and pitched camp in the desert; there, facing the mountain, Israel pitched camp.
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Look, I shall come to you in a dense cloud so that the people will hear when I speak to you and believe you ever after.' Moses then told Yahweh what the people had said.
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go to the people and tell them to sanctify themselves today and tomorrow. They must wash their clothes and be ready for the day after tomorrow; for the day after tomorrow, in the sight of all the people, Yahweh will descend on Mount Sinai.
Now at daybreak two days later, there were peals of thunder and flashes of lightning, dense cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast; and, in the camp, all the people trembled. Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they took their stand at the bottom of the mountain. Mount Sinai was entirely wrapped in smoke, because Yahweh had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke rose like smoke from a furnace and the whole mountain shook violently. Louder and louder grew the trumpeting. Moses spoke, and God answered him in the thunder. Yahweh descended on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, and Yahweh called Moses to the top of the mountain; and Moses went up.
Matthew 13: 11-17
In answer, he said, ‘Because to you is granted to understand the mysteries of the kingdom of Heaven, but to them it is not granted. Anyone who has will be given more and will have more than enough; but anyone who has not will be deprived even of what he has. The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. So in their case what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah is being fulfilled:
Listen and listen, but never understand!
Look and look, but never perceive!
This people’s heart has grown coarse,
their ears dulled,
they have shut their eyes tight
to avoid using their eyes to see,
their ears to hear,
their heart to understand,
changing their ways
and being healed by me.‘But blessed are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! In truth I tell you, many prophets and upright people longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.
This Gospel follows sower and seed
Disciples ask why Jesus preaches in
parables
People see and hear but
they do not listen or understand.
We need insight to understand and see
insight into the kingdom
Many prophets longed to see what you see
and didn't see it.
Exodus — Key moment in Jewish History
The signs
God manifested Himself to them —
They recognized God is communicating
to them, but they didn't remember
it very long.
God has given us this revelation in Jesus —
We pray we will understand —
God we pray:
Help us so we keep the covenant with God
We must pray to see the vision of God —
Pray we move more and more from our
distorted vision of God, others
and ourselves —
into the light —
To see with eyes unveiled
To see clearly — not be blinded by the
fallacies of the world
Let us see — that
Jesus is truly present and with us in
the Holy Eucharist
Let us see — God —
Fill us with Your grace —
Let our eyes be opened
Let us hear and understand
Let us know insight into the hidden
mysteries
When I go to the Eucharist —
I am filled with His life
When I do my hour before the Blessed Sacrament
I am filled with His grace —
When I go to confession — I receive
His grace
I am saturated more and more with His
grace — His life
I live in Him
I must let go — surrender — let Him
run my life
I must believe in Him
We can see and not believe
We can see and not see at all
God give us Your vision —
The more we give into things that are dark —
judging —
looking at what is not true —
the more our vision is clouded
We pray to see through the eyes of God —
not the world —
not the negative thoughts we have —
We pray to the Holy Spirit to give us vision —
I surrender to You oh God —
In alcoholics anonymous and all their programs —
in dysfunctional programs —
they operate by the 12 steps
The Twelve Steps of AA
Here are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery:
1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol,
that our lives had become unmanageable.2. Came to believe that a Power greater than
ourselves could restore us to sanity.3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives
over to the care of God as we understood Him.4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human
being the exact nature of our wrongs.6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all
these defects of character.7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed,
and became willing to make amends to them all.9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible,
except when to do so would injure them or others.10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we
were wrong promptly admitted it.11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our
conscious contact with God as we understood Him,
praying only for knowledge of His will for us and
the power to carry that out.12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps,
we tried to carry this message to alcoholics,
and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Notice the surrendering —
The recognition of the dysfunction in the first
step —
not denial —
like ignoring the elephant in the living
room
A person can tip-toe around an alcoholic —
dysfunctional — angry and
become blind to what is going on in their
own house —
As children they may have grown up in a house
with denial — maybe secrets —
sworn to secrecy about anger, abuse etc.
People in abusive, alcoholic, angry, food
disorders, sexual disorders can ignore
the problems
rage-aholics — acting as if this is normal —
It may be functional because the people
accepted the dysfunction and are living
by these dysfunctional rules —
but it is dysfunctional, not what God
wants —
Denial —
In alcoholics anonymous there is a pamphlet —
"The Merry-go-round called denial"
A person who is dysfunctional usually forces
their behavior on others —
anger, rage, money constraints —
in business one can try to control by holding
out with needed materials for operation
of the business —
passive-aggressive behavior
means a person passively provokes, but
they are really forcing their behavior
They operate with these relationships with others —
hurting our relationship with God and
hurting our relationship with others —
the opposite of the greatest commandment —
unloving and selfish
A person - married — in relationship of all
kinds —
works together to help each other —
realizing all things are done for the honor and
glory of God
Power seeking — seeking dominance for dominance
sake is from the defects of original sin —
A person is here to learn to work, in love, to
promote God's Kingdom
Wearing bags of dysfunction on our back,
unfinished business, anger, can
enter into all our dealings —
A person who has a relationship that is
wrong (i.e. married and cheating on their
partner) sees through these impure
eyes, as their goal, when they operate —
they have this impure outcome as their
goal and their dealings will be shaded —
"not right on" — not doing God's will —
It is baggage getting in the way of our relationship
with God and others
Other things can be deep rooted jealousies —
deep rooted anger —
deep rooted possessiveness —
laziness —
lustfulness —
gluttony —
pride
acted out in our relationships with others
Jesus: Take not the bag on your back for the
the journey to heaven —
be pure — like Mary
R. Purity — St. Ignatius purpose (Spiritual Exercises)
Let go of inordinate attachments
Mastery of self
self discipline
Foundation
Doing all things for the honor and glory
of God
We want purity —

we tried to carry this message to alcoholics,
and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
We recognize the unmanageableness
of our life
Then we recognize God and only God
can help us
Then we turn our lives over —
our will over to Him —
(we want only God's will)
Then we make a fearless inventory —
- list our offenses against God and others
A person who denies their past sins — stays
stuck —
We look at what we have done and
We tell somebody else and
We make amends, say we are sorry
unless we would hurt them further —
Working the Spiritual Exercises of
St. Ignatius has the examination
of conscience
year by year St. Ignatius says —
we write down our sins
We make a general confession
we let it go — we know the
truth about ourselves
We say we are sorry —
We are here to do God's work —
Not carry bags of dysfunction on our backs —
our purpose is to build the kingdom —
In St. Ignatius Spiritual Exercises —
purpose — mastery of self
— letting go of inordinate attachments —
Many people don't want to change
We are here to change
Sometimes the hardest thing is to change —
We need to ask God to remove our defects of character —
We are willing to have them removed —
We forgive
We end old unfinished relationships in our mind
and heart with — dealing with anger — then
forgiving them and loving and praying for
them in our heart —
Like a snow plow
going down a clogged street —
clearing dirty snow away,
ice and debris
To die to self —
To grow to be more and more like Christ
To be filled more and more with His life —
Look at the Transfiguration
Look at Bread and wine
changed to the Body and Blood of Christ —
in the Mass
Look at the Death of Jesus
Look at the Resurrection —
Jesus feeds us with Himself —
We are to put on Christ —
When we quit working on ourselves — we can
slip more and more backward —
In marriage — God has given men and women a
gift and children to work together — a family
At work people are to work together —
In friendships we are to work together —
In our lives we are to obey God —
God gave us His commandments —
We have a covenant with God to obey —
God is over us — He is the Creator
We are the creatures
God has the plan — we are created in the
image and likeness of God —
God created an orderly, beautiful world —
Adam and Eve sinned — they rebelled against God —
disorder entered the world —
death entered the world —
pain, suffering, discord —
Because of our wounded human nature we
have tendencies toward —
Pride, Greed, Envy, Wrath, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth
How for do we let jealousies, anger, pride,
lust, gluttony, slothfulness — determine
our actions —
The more we give into these ways — the more we
are rebelling against what God wants
Romans 8: 5-9
Those who are living by their natural inclinations have their minds on the things human nature desires; those who live in the Spirit have their minds on spiritual things. And human nature has nothing to look forward to but death, while the Spirit looks forward to life and peace, because the outlook of disordered human nature is opposed to God, since it does not submit to God's Law, and indeed it cannot, and those who live by their natural inclinations can never be pleasing to God. You, however, live not by your natural inclinations, but by the Spirit, since the Spirit of God has made a home in you. Indeed, anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
People can go through life seeking dominance
for dominance sake their whole life —
have pride
Fr. Joe said Sunday —
a disciple is one who listens to God
when we stop listening —
we aren't a disciple of God
Jesus is the Teacher —
Jesus has revealed insight into the hidden
mysteries in these writings —
We have to empty ourselves —
Christ suffered for our sins —
The Father's family is dysfunctional —
God flooded the earth at the time of Noah —
Only those on the Ark survived
God divided the Red Sea
God gives us the Church
From the Mass Book
They pierced His Heart with a lance and what flowed forth was blood and water, the sacramental life of the Church, water for Baptism and blood for the Eucharist. His life, death, and Resurrection live on in the Church this day.
God gives us this sharing in His life in baptism
Jesus feeds this life with Himself in the Eucharist
God gives us the Church —
the fountain of His life
Life — Light — Vision
When we pray the rosary —
the Holy Spirit gives us insight into the hidden
mysteries
Going to the Eucharist — confession — adoration
We are filled with His life —
A hard heart — |
All can block the flow of His grace
to us
We want to be an empty vessel —
pure
holy
A bottle open ready for His grace
Doing God's will —

1 Corinthians 15: 20-28
In fact, however, Christ has been raised from the dead, as the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. As it was by one man that death came, so through one man has come the resurrection of the dead. Just as all die in Adam, so in Christ all will be brought to life; but all of them in their proper order: Christ the first-fruits, and next, at his coming, those who belong to him. After that will come the end, when he will hand over the kingdom to God the Father, having abolished every principality, every ruling force and power. For he is to be king until he has made his enemies his footstool, and the last of the enemies to be done away with is death, for he has put all things under his feet. But when it is said everything is subjected, this obviously cannot include the One who subjected everything to him. When everything has been subjected to him, then the Son himself will be subjected to the One who has subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.
Wisdom 3: 1-9
But the souls of the upright are in the hands of God,
and no torment can touch them.
To the unenlightened, they appeared to die,
their departure was regarded as disaster,
their leaving us like annihilation;
but they are at peace.
If, as it seemed to us, they suffered punishment,
their hope was rich with immortality;
slight was their correction, great will their blessings be.
God was putting them to the test
and has proved them worthy to be with him;
he has tested them like gold in a furnace,
and accepted them as a perfect burnt offering.
At their time of visitation, they will shine out;
as sparks run through the stubble, so will they.
They will judge nations, rule over peoples,
and the Lord will be their king for ever.
Those who trust in him will understand the truth,
those who are faithful will live with him in love;
for grace and mercy await his holy ones,
and he intervenes on behalf of his chosen.
This is a journey
to die to those things in us not likened to Christ to
rise in Him
this takes discipline
this takes examination of conscience
this takes relationship with Our Father — as a little
child — doing His will — following His Plan —
this takes being one with the Holy Spirit that it is the
Holy Spirit that counsels us and gives us wisdom —
Obedience is paramount —
Jesus showed us how He obeyed His Father to
His death on the cross
Obedience to the Father's will
Taking up the crosses God gives us so we rise in Him —
1 Peter 1: 10-16
This salvation was the subject of the search and investigation of the prophets who spoke of the grace you were to receive, searching out the time and circumstances for which the Spirit of Christ, bearing witness in them, was revealing the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow them. It was revealed to them that it was for your sake and not their own that they were acting as servants delivering the message which has now been announced to you by those who preached to you the gospel through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even the angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.
Sing: I am the Bread of Life
John 14: 1-7
Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You trust in God, trust also in me.
In my Father’s house
there are many places to live in;
otherwise I would have told you.
I am going now to prepare a place for you,
and after I have gone
and prepared you a place,
I shall return to take you to myself,
so that you may be with me
where I am.
You know the way
to the place where I am going.Thomas said, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ Jesus said:
I am the Way; I am Truth and Life.
No one can come to the Father
except through me.
If you know me,
you will know my Father too.
From this moment you know him
and have seen him.
It is hard to say good bye to anybody we loved —
Loving is what we are to be — serving — loving wife, mother —
priest, sister, brother —
We live to be close to Jesus —
This death we experience is only a temporary parting for us —
We are in this life a short time —
In relation to eternity this life is only a moment —
Jesus said He was getting a place ready for us
We will all die
Jesus says I am the Way; I am Truth and Life.
We are to follow Jesus —
This Gospel was from the last supper —
He knew how traumatized they would be — because
He would be arrested etc. —
so He told them don't be trouble
In the first reading
Jews were being persecuted for their faith when
they were doing what God wanted —
They concluded — suffering is used to purify us —
God lets us suffer —
Foolish — Jews used this word to mean person
without faith — spiritually wanting —
With faith — we know person is in peace —
We must be ready to meet the Lord —
so we can all be together again
in the place God is preparing for us —
Sing: Be Not Afraid
The more we are filled with anger, bitterness, jealousy —
the more we are not free, but enslaved — locked
in our dark stone heart —
We must let go — not harbor blame hatred to others —
God calls us to look at ourselves and be actors
to build His Kingdom — not reactors to our
tendencies from our wounded human nature
The Father's family is dysfunctional
In an alcoholic family — there is the alcoholic (it can
be any dysfunction) and the enabler - enables —
tip toes around him — not to jostle him — and
controls others in the family to let him (the alcoholic) act
the way he does
The devil presses on people so they act and feel angry inside and
instead of not giving into the feelings and being focused
on the light and God — they tip toe around letting
their thoughts be angry, jealous thoughts —
sometimes —
this blocks that union God wants with us —
The Father's family is dysfunctional —
we are to rise above this
God gives us the Church
God gives us the sacraments — the fountain of His life —
God gives us Baptism — this sharing in His life
God feeds this life with Himself in the Eucharist
God gives us His Word
God gives us penance and we get tremendous grace
from this
God gives us so much —
We cannot give into negative thinking —
We control our thoughts
Take us deeply into Your Heart, Oh Jesus
Mother Mary help us to focus on being little children of the Father
—
loving the Father

Words of Jesus to Members of
Shepherds of Christ Associates:"My beloved priest-companion, I intend to use the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, and the movement, Shepherds of Christ Associates, in a powerful way for the renewal of My Church and the world.
"I will use the newsletter and the chapters of Shepherds of Christ Associates as a powerful instrument for spreading devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart.
"I am calling many to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. To all of them I will give great blessings. I will use them as instruments to help bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. I will give great graces to the members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. I will call them to be deeply united to My Heart and to Mary's Heart as I lead them ever closer to My Father in the Holy Spirit."
