A Joyful Mystery for Apostles
An apostle is one who lives to serve the Lord
The First Joyful Mystery
The Annunciation
Messenger: Christ is the first-fruits.
The Son comes into the womb of the Virgin to set the sinful men free.
Jesus is Redeemer, Savior, King of the world.
Men have been held captive by the devil.
Christ will enter into the belly of the earth, He will rise victorious from a new tomb.
The snarl of the devil is so great, the power of the Almighty God is greater.
Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega.
The One in the womb of the Woman is the promised Redeemer.
He is to die to release the captives from their captivity.
A Son, A Counselor, a Prince of peace.
The Second Joyful Mystery
The Visitation
Messenger: John the Baptist was beheaded.
Christ comes, the Head of His Body the Church.
John the Baptist, the voice of one crying in the desert.
Christ the first-fruits, the One slain to pay the price of the sinful race.
Christ the Lamb of God.
Christ the Son of God.
Christ the Redeemer.
Mary the spotless Virgin.
Mary the Mother all pure.
Mary Mother of the whole human race. A time of trial, a time of joy, a victory, the Son of God comes to save sinful men.
The Third Joyful Mystery
The Nativity

Messenger: Through her powerful intercession great grace is released.
Through the purity of offering sacrifice united to Mary’s Immaculate Heart, great grace is released.
The Son comes in Mary’s womb.
Jesus shows us the great gift of coming in Mary’s spiritual womb, her Immaculate Heart.
The Church advanced greatly while Mary was on earth.
We realize that we can offer sacrifice aided by her powerful intercession.
We need to realize that we should always pray united to her powerful intercession.
The Holy Spirit works in conjunction with His spouse, the Virgin Mary.
With Mary powerfully interceding for us, we need the workings of the Holy Spirit to become more sanctified, to offer a holy sacrifice, to fight off any power the devil may have to interfere with our good work.
The Fourth Joyful Mystery
The Presentation
Messenger: This child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel.
Mary’s children do not recognize the power of praying united to her powerful intercession.
Mary’s sorrow is that her children do not recognize the importance of her Immaculate Heart in the plan of salvation.
Mary is the handmaid of the Lord.
Jesus is the Sacrifice.
We offer ourselves as a sacrifice to the Father through her powerful intercession.
We take time at Mass.
We prepare our hearts before Mass.
We give our hearts to Jesus and Mary in consecration before Mass.
We come in His name to offer sacrifice. We do not come in our own names, we are His servants.

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
1 Kings 3: 5, 7-12
At Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream during the night. God said, 'Ask what you would like me to give you.'
Now, Yahweh my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father. But I am a very young man, unskilled in leadership. And here is your servant, surrounded with your people whom you have chosen, a people so numerous that its number cannot be counted or reckoned. So give your servant a heart to understand how to govern your people, how to discern between good and evil, for how could one otherwise govern such a great people as yours?' It pleased Yahweh that Solomon should have asked for this. 'Since you have asked for this,' God said, 'and not asked for long life for yourself or riches or the lives of your enemies but have asked for a discerning judgement for yourself, here and now I do what you ask. I give you a heart wise and shrewd as no one has had before and no one will have after you.

We are well aware that God works with those who love him, those who have been called in accordance with his purpose, and turns everything to their good. He decided beforehand who were the ones destined to be moulded to the pattern of his Son, so that he should be the eldest of many brothers; it was those so destined that he called; those that he called, he justified, and those that he has justified he has brought into glory.

– (1 Kings 3: 5,7-12, Romans 8: 28-30, Matthew 13: 44-52) King David died about 970 years before Christ. His son, Solomon, succeeded him as king of Israel. Today’s first reading is Solomon’s prayer as he begins his reign. He prayed for an understanding heart that he would reign well. Of all the gifts he could have asked for, he valued wisdom more than anything else. God’s commands guide us to wisdom, so in the psalm refrain we praise God for this gift.INTRODUCTION
HOMILY: Again this Sunday we hear Jesus teaching us about the kingdom of heaven. The parable about the net thrown in the sea was explained and the first two parables about the treasure and the pearl are pretty obvious. However, I have a story that will help us think more deeply about the idea of a treasure.
A lady wrote this story about herself. She recalled that when she was a child her wealthy parents would take an extended vacation every summer and they would leave their child in the care of a sitter. When the girl was eleven, the sitter quit right before the parents were to go on vacation, but the parents were able to hire a substitute. The girl came upon her mother wrapping up and hiding all the family jewels and silverware. The little girl asked why, since her mother had never done that before. Her mother explained she could not trust the new sitter with the family valuables. You can imagine how the little girl interpreted this remark. The parents were trusting the sitter with their daughter but not with anything that had material value. Was she not a “family valuable” of greater importance than knives and forks?
That remark did not make the little girl feel valued. I am sure her parents would have protested that they greatly valued their daughter. The point I am making is that we can all say we value something or someone. But sometimes the things or people we value most are taken for granted.
Jesus is telling us today that the kingdom of God and living in God’s good grace is of the highest value to us. Going to Mass, prayer, keeping the Commandments, loving God and each other is not just a form of insurance that we will be happy in the next life. It is something that we make part of our lives. The man who found the treasure was lucky, but the treasure wasn’t legally and fully his until he sacrificed his possessions in order to buy the field. The man who wanted the pearl had to do the same. The kingdom of heaven doesn’t come automatically. We have to invest in it to really possess it, or rather I should say, to have it possess us. The most important thing we have to invest is our time, time to pray and to reflect on the Scriptures, perhaps even to serve God or the Church with some of our gifts and talents. But it also requires an investment of our will, choosing to guide our lives by Christ’s teachings rather than making up our own rules about what’s good or bad. It even takes an investment of our finances, since if we value our faith, we will adequately support it.
When this life is over, we will have to leave behind most of our treasures. But we will take with us our good works and our love for God and others; these will be our joy for all eternity. A life of holiness and goodness is a treasure that will not fail. Amen.
