Baruch 5: 1-9
Jerusalem, take off your dress of sorrow
and distress,
put on the beauty of God’s glory
for evermore,
wrap the cloak of God’s saving justice
around you,
put the diadem of the Eternal One’s glory
on your head,
for God means to show your splendour
to every nation under heaven,
and the name God gives you
for evermore will be,
‘Peace–through–Justice,
and Glory–through–Devotion’.
Arise, Jerusalem, stand on the heights
and turn your eyes to the east:
see your children reassembled
from west and east
at the Holy One’s command,
rejoicing because God has remembered.
Though they left you on foot
driven by enemies,
now God brings them back to you,
carried gloriously, like a royal throne.
For God has decreed the flattening
of each high mountain,
of the everlasting hills,
the filling of the valleys
to make the ground level
so that Israel can walk safely
in God’s glory.
And the forests and every fragrant tree
will provide shade
for Israel, at God’s command;
for God will guide Israel in joy
by the light of his glory,
with the mercy and saving justice
which come from him.
Philippians 1: 4-6, 8-11
and every time I pray for you all, I always pray with joy for your partnership in the gospel from the very first day up to the present. I am quite confident that the One who began a good work in you will go on completing it until the Day of Jesus Christ comes.
For God will testify for me how much I long for you all with the warm longing of Christ Jesus; it is my prayer that your love for one another may grow more and more with the knowledge and complete understanding that will help you to come to true discernment, so that you will be innocent and free of any trace of guilt when the Day of Christ comes, entirely filled with the fruits of uprightness through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.
Luke 3: 1-6
In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah, in the desert. He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet:
A voice of one that cries in the desert:
Prepare a way for the Lord,
make his paths straight!
Let every valley be filled in,
every mountain and hill be levelled,
winding ways be straightened
and rough roads made smooth,
and all humanity
will see the salvation of God.

INTRODUCTION: In today’s first reading, we hear from Baruch, the secretary of Jeremiah the prophet and apparently a prophet himself. He lived during the Babylonian exile over 500 years before Christ. When the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem, they destroyed everything and took most of its citizens to Babylon as captives. The prophet Baruch addresses Jerusalem and tells the city to rejoice, God will bring back the captives and Jerusalem will prosper again.
HOMILY: Father Joseph Donders who lives in Washington DC tells an interesting story about going to the airport to pick up a friend who was coming to visit him from Africa. It was a cold, winter day and all the trees were bare except for a few firs and the pines. This was the first time his friend had ever left his home country in Africa. As he looked at the trees he said, “I had heard about this, but I did not realize things were so bad.” Not knowing what his African friend was talking about, Fr. Donders asked “What do you mean?” His friend said he heard about air pollution in America and its effect on the trees, “but,” he said, “I never thought it was bad as this with all those trees dead!”
In the part of Africa where his visitor came from, the trees were always green and most of the time in full bloom. Some trees would lose their leaves for brief periods throughout the year but never all at once as happens here in the fall and winter in the United States. So the visitor from Africa presumed air pollution had killed them all.
Two men saw the same thing and yet their view was entirely different. One saw only death and destruction, the other saw nothing of the kind, for he could see beyond the winter to springtime and new life. Our readings today demonstrate a similar event. Baruch, in today’s first reading, is speaking to God’s people during the upheaval of the Babylonian exile. He tells them God is ready to bring the exiles back home, and the return home will be a glorious event. By this time the people had lost hope that Jerusalem would ever be rebuilt, and the exiles believed they would be spending the rest of their lives as captives in a foreign land. The prophet saw beyond their present captivity to a glorious future.
The Jews at the time of John the Baptist, 500 years later, were not a free people. They had their Temple; Jerusalem had been rebuilt. But they were part of the great Roman Empire. Rome made the rules, Rome collected their taxes (and they were heavily taxed), Roman soldiers marched through their streets and a Roman governor who was noted for his brutality, named Pontius Pilate, controlled their land. Most of us think of Pilate as sympathetic or just plain weak because of the way he handled Jesus when Jesus was arrested. Most of us do not know that in a couple of years Pilate would lose his job because his Roman bosses, who were not nice people themselves, considered him too ruthless and violent. But the prophet John the Baptist saw beyond all their oppression as he quotes from the prophet Isaiah: “all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
In our own day there are enough things going on to depress us if we dwell on them all. It might be world events, it might be the social and moral climate we live in, it might be personal agonies or worries. Sometimes we need help to see beyond our present woes, someone who can give us hope, someone who is a prophet who can tells us spring will soon be here and the trees will be in full bloom again.
This is what our readings are telling us. This is what Jesus’ birth is telling us. This is what his presence with us today in the Eucharist is telling us. But today’s readings are telling us one more thing. They are telling us we can’t just sit back and wait for it all to happen. We have to prepare. Quoting Isaiah, the Baptist cries out to prepare the way of the Lord.
There is a danger that when I say the word “prepare” most people will start thinking “yeah! I have tons of things to get ready!” Suddenly I’ll lose their attention while they’re making their list and checking it twice thinking of all the things they have to do. That’s not what it’s all about. The springtime that we have to look forward to depends on our willingness to open our lives to it through faith or we will remain in the cold and dark. The new life we hope for comes to us only when we submit our lives to Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
So when I say prepare, I want you to look into your lives more deeply than thinking of decorations or parties or gifts or cards. Those are nice, but there’s more to it. St. Paul today gives us an idea of what we should be doing to prepare when he tells the Philippians what he prays for them. He prays that their love for God and for each other may increase, that they keep a sense of what is important in life and that they live pure and blameless lives filled with good works. That is my prayer for you too. Amen.

Tell My People
Messages from Jesus and Mary
as given to Fr. Edward Carter, S.J.
The Peace of Christ
Jesus: "My beloved priest-companion, tell My beloved people that I am the Divine Giver of peace. I want so much to give My people an even greater sense of peace, but many refuse My offer! They think they know their own way to peace and happiness—a way which is not My way. The further they stray from Me, the more restless they become, and the less true peace they have. My way is the only way to peace.
"My people, come each day to My Sacred Heart. Let Mary lead you to My Heart. The more you dwell within My Heart, the more peace will be yours. I am Lord and Master. Please listen to My words! Do not seek your peace and consolation in worldly pursuits. Come within My Heart, and you will be filled with the peace you so much crave. I will press you to My Sacred Heart. I will tell you how much I love you! The more you realize this love, the more My peace will possess your soul!"
Reflection: The chief fruit of love is peace. The more we open ourselves to the burning love of Jesus' Heart, and respond by loving God and neighbor more and more, the more peace we experience.
The Two Hearts and the Mass
Jesus: "My beloved friend, tell My people that they are living in the Age of the Two Hearts—that of My Heart and My Mother's heart. My people live in the initial stages of this great era. I call all My people to take up their refuge in My Heart and My Mother's heart. In Our Hearts they will become more and more transformed into My likeness.
"The greatest source for growth in devotion to Our Hearts is the Eucharist. I wish My people to attend Mass often, daily if possible. What a great gift I have given to My people in the Eucharist! Yet many of My people are indifferent to the treasures contained in the Mass. Think of it! My people are privileged to offer the Sacrifice of the Mass together with Me! And yet how many prefer to do other things rather than attend Mass. How this attitude offends My Sacred Heart!
"I long for My people to participate in the Mass and to receive Me worthily! Think of it! I, Who am your God, long to come to you each day! In the Eucharist I come to you in My Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. Present within you, I long to take you close to My Sacred Heart, this Heart which is truly within you. The more you allow Me to do so, the more closely I press you to this Heart. I shower you with its riches. I abundantly give you great graces which increasingly form you in My likeness.
"I am Lord and Master! Please listen to My words. Pray, pray for a deeper understanding of the Mass. In union with Mary, approach Me daily in the Eucharist. I, your God, long to come to you. How much do you long to receive Me?"
Reflection: Everything in the life of the Church, and in the Christian lives of each of us individually, is centered in the Mass. Vatican II, in a few words, makes a powerful statement concerning the Church's Liturgy—at the center of which is the Eucharistic Sacrifice: ". . .in the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fountain from which all her power flows" [The Documents of Vatican II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, No.10 (American Press edition)].

Joyful Mysteries
The Annunciation
1. R. The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and asked Mary to be the Mother of Jesus.
2. R. Mary always complied to the Will of the Father. She had such faith and trust in God.
Mary said, You see before you the Lords servant, let it happen to me as you have said. And the angel left her. Luke 1: 38
3. R. Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit and the Word became flesh!
4. R. There was such intimacy between Jesus and Mary from the first moment of conception.
5. R. The little child Jesus, truly God, grew within the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
6. R. Jesus is with us this day. Jesus truly present in the tabernacle in His Divinity and humanity.
7. R. How tenderly we would treat the child Jesus if He were here today. But how do we treat our children? How do we treat one another?
8. R. God the Father loved us so very much that He sent His only begotten Son into this world.
9. R. Jesus loves us this much this day that He remains with us in the Eucharist!
10. R. Dear Jesus, help us to realize more and more how You truly are God and that You came to this earth a little child, an infant, so that we may be able to follow You.
Song between decades: Ave, ave, ave Maria
The Visitation
1. R. Mary made haste to the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth. She was so overjoyed with the news that Jesus was in her womb. She wanted to tell her cousin Elizabeth. She was told by the angel that her cousin Elizabeth, in her old age, was with child!
2. R. When Mary arrived with Jesus in her womb, her cousin Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out:
Luke 1: 42-43...Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?
3. R. The child within Elizabeth's womb leapt for joy! John, who was in Elizabeth's womb, who would announce the coming of Jesus, was overjoyed. Even in the womb of his mother, he jumped for joy!
4. R. The invisible divine child, the child Jesus, was in Mary's womb. Jesus is in the Tabernacle this day. He comes to us in the Eucharist. We see before us the Consecrated Host. But beyond the veil is the Jesus who is waiting and longing to be with us. We should jump for joy as the child within Elizabeth's womb jumped at the sight of Mary and Jesus in her womb!
5. R. Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out in a loud voice the Magnificat!
6. Song: My soul rejoices in God My Saviour. My Spirit finds its joy in God he Living God.
7. Luke 1: 48
because he has looked upon
the humiliation of his servant.
Yes, from now onwards
all generations will call me blessed,
8. R. For He Who is mighty hath done great things to me and Holy is His Name!
9. R. The first sanctuary of the child Jesus was the womb of the Virgin Mary. Now Jesus remains in the sanctuary of the Tabernacle waiting and longing for us to come and to be with Him. Jesus is no less present than the day that Mary carried Him in her womb. Would we not be so overjoyed to see the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus within her womb? Jesus is in the Tabernacle and wherever Jesus is, Mary is always by His side!
10. R. Come to the Tabernacle and pray your rosary in front of the Tabernacle for Jesus and Mary are truly here!
Song between decades: Ave, ave, ave Maria
The Birth of Jesus
1. R. The child Jesus came to this earth and took on a human nature out of greatest love for us.
2. R. His majesty, the child Jesus, was born in a helpless little baby body.
3. R. Jesus came to this earth in such poverty. There was not a blare of trumpets, not a roll of drums! He came quietly and was born in a little stable in the town of Bethlehem with the cows and the sheep.
4. R. Jesus was born in poverty. However the night was such a great night. For the angels came and they sang greatest praise to the King of Kings — the Son of God — the Child Jesus!
5. R. Jesus wants us to pray to the Child Jesus this day! Jesus was a tender child. Such a loving child. So small but so Mighty! But the Child was Jesus, was God, in all His Power and all His Majesty and He took on a human nature for greatest love of us!
6. R. Oh what Goodness, the Goodness of God that He sent His only begotten Son into the world to become a little, helpless baby!
7. R. This helpless child who was born in the town of Bethlehem is the Savior of the world.
8. R. The Child Jesus came into this world and He brought to us His Divine Love.
9 Song: What Child is This?
10. R. Do we realize even a small amount that Jesus Christ, the Son of God truly came into this world as a small child and that He remains with us this day in the Eucharist waiting for us?
Song between decades: Ave, ave, ave Maria
The Presentation
1. R. Jesus was taken to the Temple
2. R. This reminds us of our own baptism. It is through baptism that we are made children of God and heirs of heaven. It is through baptism that we are given such a gift to have this special sharing in His life.
3. R. As water and blood poured forth from the pierced Heart of Jesus after His death, water is for Baptism. And Blood for the Eucharist.
4. R. It is through His pierced Heart on Calvary, that the sacramental life of the Church was born!
5. R. Jesus is our Savior.
6. R. Jesus has provided for us so well. We are one body in the Church!
7. R. The child Jesus was taken to the Temple to be presented to God. Mary place us ever so tenderly in the Heart of Jesus. Jesus take us to Our Most Loving Father.
8. R. Father please accept us as a loving sacrifice. We come in the Heart of Your Beloved Son!
9. R. Let our heart forever slip so comfortably into the Heart of Our Beloved Jesus. Let us rest there in perfect peace away from all the turmoil, all the trouble, all the anxieties of this busy world. Let us find our refuge forever in the Heart of Jesus.
10. R. Dear Mary, as the Heart of Jesus was formed in your womb, as you held in your arms the Most Tender Sacred Heart as a little Child, as you watched Him on Calvary, a Heart so overflowing with love that He gave His flesh and His blood for us, now you see as they pierce His Heart with a lance and what pours forth is the blood and water, the sacramental life of the Church — Mary help us to be close to God. Mary, you who know the Heart of Jesus, lead us to such intimacy with His Heart brimming over with greatest love for each one of us.
Song between decades: Ave, ave, ave Maria
The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
1. R. The Child Jesus was taken up to the Temple when He was twelve years old. When Mary and Joseph had left, they left the Child Jesus behind!
2. R. Mary's Heart is a Heart that suffered and also experienced joy as she lived so closely to the Child Jesus. Mary, as you know the Heart of the Child Jesus, help us know more and more how to give Him love. He, Who is deserving of all of our love! We who think so little of how to give love to Him! Open up our eyes! Open up our minds to know how to love Jesus more tenderly.
3. R. Dear Child Jesus, You Who were lost in the Temple, were not lost at all. For You were doing the work the Father called You to do, preaching to the doctors in the Temple. As You preached in the Temple, teach us Your truths so that we may more and more see with our eyes, know with our minds and hearts, more and more about You about Your Divine Love.
4. Song: Little Child
5. R. How hard it is for us to let go. To let go and let God lead the way. To realize that the way that He will lead us is the most wonderful way. It leads to the burning love of His Divine Heart.
6. Song: Come Holy Spirit
7. R. Mary's life with Jesus was a life with sorrow and joy. She held Him with great joy but then Simeon told her of the sufferings that she would experience all through her life. During all the joy that she had with the Child Jesus, she had before her eyes the prophecy of Simeon. Now as they search for the Child Jesus in the Temple, her Heart was in such sorrowing to know that He was lost.
8. R. Holy Spirit, come upon us and open up our minds and our hearts so that we can more and more be drawn to know and love God more. So that if we are lost, we are led quickly back to the light that You impart to our hearts.
9. R. Give to us the gift of Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Counsel and Fortitude so that we may be strengthened more and more to walk the way that Jesus is calling us to walk. May we never become lost and lose our way but follow the way that the Father has planned for us as His beloved children. Always follow His plan and always live in His Divine Will!
10. Song: I Love You Jesus
Song after last decade: Ave, ave, ave Maria

I give to you directions to help take you more deeply into My Heart and My Mother's Heart.
You have been called by Me to lead the strayed ones home to My Heart.
‘Disaster for the shepherds who lose and scatter the sheep of my pasture, Yahweh declares. This, therefore, is what Yahweh, God of Israel, says about the shepherds who shepherd my people, "You have scattered my flock, you have driven them away and have not taken care of them. Right, I shall take care of you for your misdeeds, Yahweh declares! But the remnant of my flock I myself shall gather from all the countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; they will be fruitful and increase in numbers. For them I shall raise up shepherds to shepherd them and pasture them. No fear, no terror for them any more; not one shall be lost, Yahweh declares!
Look, the days are coming,
Yahweh declares,
when I shall raise an upright Branch
for David;
he will reign as king and be wise,
doing what is just and upright
in the country.
In his days Judah will triumph
and Israel live in safety.
And this is the name he will be called,
‘Yahweh–is–our–Saving–Justice.’ "
