                    The Spiritual life
                is the reality inside
                most like Jesus.

To be filled with - the
                    Spirit of God - inside
                    LIFE - IN - HIM —

                INSIDE more perfected
as Our Heavenly Father is perfect.

                To hide our faults and
                    woundedness inside
                    from ourselves is
                    to stay stuck in
                    the muck —

                Inside reality to be —
                    living in the truth —
                    having the light of life
                    IN US —

                    not darkness

                    Now look inside of yourself.
What makes you act, but all people
                see is the outside.

The eyes are the windows of the
                soul.

                    The hard-skin - tough-jaw —
                stiff mannerisms.

                    Who are we kidding?
                    God —
                    God knows the heart —
God knows the condition of our organs.
                    Who are we kidding?
If we sin or lie about our
                    imperfections —
our fear of someone seeing how
really insecure we really are —
Do we think we get our acceptance
                        from others —
We must focus on what God thinks —
We must focus on God who sees our heart and
We can never lie to God —
We stand naked before Him ALWAYS

                Jesus says
I am the way, the truth and the life.

                God knows all things
Fame and fortune cannot give us power
What others think does not give us power —
                Power comes from God
Power is not gotten in being accepted
                    by others.
Power is not gotten in wealth
Wealthy - well accepted people get
                    cancer too

                Look inside —
For we act from what we believe
                    what we are thinking inside
The eyes are the windows of the
                    soul

It shows on the outside when
                people don't like themselves —

Things show about our heart by
how we smile, how we act —

Actors learn to be actors —
They learn to act like another person
                    to play their role —
They study how they are inside —
                    their actions

                We study Jesus
                    life IN Him

                Pray the rosary
                Read the Scriptures
Jesus is the Son of God

                Love finds a way

The Heart is the organ that pumps
                    life to the body

                Love is why I give

                I love

Yesterday all the power went out
The radio did not go out there
                The waves or whatever were
                    not going out

A beating heart that is unloving
                    can send hate, selfishness

                Satan wants the person focused
                    on themselves
Satan attacked Eve in the garden —
                Satan presses down
Satan wants us to think someone
                    is not liking us
                Satan's grip is paralyzing and
                    crippling
                Satan wants us willful
                Satan wants us disobedient
                Satan presses in — Fallacious
                    reasoning —
                    self-focus

We cannot read each other's minds —

Satan is the father of lies
Satan LIED to Eve in the garden

                Love
                Love is in my heart
Jesus allows us to be tested —
                Jesus wants faith
                Jesus wants us to hope
                Jesus wants us to love

Faith, hope and love the cardinal
                    virtues

1 Corinthians 13: 1-13

Though I command languages both human and angelic—if I speak without love, I am no more than a gong booming or a cymbal clashing. And though I have the power of prophecy, to penetrate all mysteries and knowledge, and though I have all the faith necessary to move mountains—if I am without love, I am nothing. Though I should give away to the poor all that I possess, and even give up my body to be burned—if I am without love, it will do me no good whatever.

Love is always patient and kind; love is never jealous; love is not boastful or conceited, it is never rude and never seeks its own advantage, it does not take offence or store up grievances. Love does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but finds its joy in the truth. It is always ready to make allowances, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes.

Love never comes to an end. But if there are prophecies, they will be done away with; if tongues, they will fall silent; and if knowledge, it will be done away with. For we know only imperfectly, and we prophesy imperfectly; but once perfection comes, all imperfect things will be done away with. When I was a child, I used to talk like a child, and see things as a child does, and think like a child; but now that I have become an adult, I have finished with all childish ways. Now we see only reflections in a mirror, mere riddles, but then we shall be seeing face to face. Now I can know only imperfectly; but then I shall know just as fully as I am myself known.

As it is, these remain: faith, hope and love, the three of them; and the greatest of them is love.

                The Eucharist heals

                Attack —
                A cold
                A germ
                Call the doctor
                Help me
                Medicine

                Devil
                Attack
                Temptation
                Darkness
                Self-focus
                Blaming
                Fallacious Reasoning

                Temptation to Complain
                Fear of being unloved
                Fear of being unaccepted
                Tired, Hungry —————>

Love pumps life to the body

                Love
                Love
                Love
Love sends out good to the world

                Radio - dark - broken —
                    no signal - no light

                Self-focus
                Cripple
                Seeking dominance for dominance
                    sake
                Blaming others

                See all as being wounded
                See offences against God
See we want to help repair
                    the breech
                Say - I don't like them
                Love the unloving
                Love those who persecute you
                Jesus shows us

                Jesus:  I am love
                    I am love.

                Healing BALM — the Eucharist
                    Medicine of Immortality
Fr. John's new book on the Eucharist
Prayers for us to pray before
                        the Eucharist —

                LIKE New Adam & New
                    I love
                    I forgive
                    I build a bridge

                    Selfless
                        (die to self)

                    I pray

    ADAM & EVE
        I do not love
        I do not forgive
        I knock the bridge
            down

        Focus on myself

        I blame

                Send out signal of love
                Send out signal of light
                Send out signal of peace

                I am filled with faith
I am an instrument of hope
                I love

Cain was in control of himself
Satan tempts — I can give in
                I can control my will
Bad habits of giving into satan

Consecration to the Hearts of Jesus
                    and Mary

                Hearts of Love
                Satan tempts

Do you do your work for your
                    honor and glory?

Do you attack others doing their
                    work for Jesus seeking
                    dominance for yourself?

Do you manipulate others to prove
                    you are over?

Do you give freely for the sake
                    of souls?

Jesus gave freely for the sake of souls.

                Prayer is love —
Prayer is pleading in love —
Prayer is focused on God —

                Focus on Jesus
Do not focus on what others think —

                My mind is strong
                My heart is loving

I do not give into the fallacious
                    reasoning of satan —

God gives us children to love —
Little ones are learning love —
                They can be jealous
                They want what they want
They have to learn who they are —
They all have a wounded human
                    nature —

                Every child is learning —
                Say - Do this —
                They say "no"
                You say hey do this
                At 2 they say "no"

Two children fight after the same
                    toy —

One may hit a sibling for dominance
The other cries they want somebody
else to pay for how they feel —

                Mom — "he hit me"
                Go sit on a chair
                "Be good" Mary says —
But you say "Be good to
                    follow God's will — His
                    order

Children look at the world —
                    wondering

                Parents may be willful, disobedient
to God — use the fallacious
                    reasoning of satan

We all can be very selfish, sinful
                    at times —
                    we are imperfect parents

                Love finds a way
                The self-lessness of Jesus
                Always doing God's will

A person can call the doctor always
                    focusing on themselves - wanting
the doctor to fix them —

We have to call on God
We have to admit our imperfection
                        to be healed

We have all been raised by
                        imperfect parents — hopefully
                        ones who loved us, but
                        had imperfect ways —
                        focused on self —
                        maybe blamed us —
                        needed spiritual healing —
needed the Word of God —
needed to know God's love themselves —

                Pride can keep us stuck
                We need to be docile
                We need to be loving
We need to be giving in prayer

We are learning about love from
the first moments we are on
                    earth —

                We may say
                    "Why am I here?"

Look at wounds we all have
                    suffered

                Jesus died on the cross
                    covered with wounds

Jesus gives us the sacraments —
Jesus gives us a sharing in His life
                    in baptism

                The Eucharist is Jesus
                The Eucharist heals our wounds

Jesus was all white - glistening —
                    full of Light

The Father says: "This is My beloved
Son in whom I am well pleased."

Jesus gives us the Mass —

                The sacrifice of Calvary sacramentally
                    made present

We unite to the Mass — to the
                    sacrifice of Calvary so
                    our lives (a tainted offering,
                    every moment, every day)
                    is a most pleasing sacrifice
                    to the Father —

                United to Jesus' sacrifice in
the Holy Spirit with all the angels and
                    saints

Jesus teaches us tainted sons of God
to be more like Him —
                    the "Son of God"

                We are tainted
He gives us a sharing in His life —
                    He heals our wounds —

                WE ARE WOUNDED —

Our human nature is wounded —
                We must struggle with
                    Dominance
                    Blaming
                    Imperfect vision of others
                    Pride
                    Envy
                    Lust
                    Lethargy
                    Imperfect, selfish vision
                        of our brothers

                We act taintedly
                Children have to learn about
                    sin, obedience, jealousy
                    love from imperfect parents

The Eucharist help us when we
                    go to Jesus —

The Blue Books lead us to the
                    Eucharist

The Blue Books are the Mighty
                    Medicine

All of us have a face

                All of us have wounds

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life

                Look at the eyes
                They tell the story —
                We must FIGHT TEMPTATION
                Grace helps us
Grace is His life in us
We can seek to be more saturated
                    with His grace
                God has all the power

                Babies learn from imperfect
                    parents

God the Father sent His Son to teach
us to be likened to Him
                    more perfected

                God works in families

                God gives children through an
                    act of love of imperfect
                    parents

                God wants us to love

                God is love

                Fathers and Mothers teach children
                    about love

                Fathers and Mothers teach imperfect
                    ways

Parents are to pray for their children

                Priests are called Father

We need to learn love at Church —
love found in the sacraments —
                    love found in Jesus
love given in the Mass — the
                        sacrifice of Calvary sacramentally
                        made present

                Children want love —
                Children want to be held
                Children want to be secure

As parents we never stop praying
                    for our children —

                God wants "sisters" and "brothers"
                    priests - praying for the
children of the Church to know
                    God's love —

Look at how important docile, loving
                    "sisters" and "brothers" are to
God's family in the Church —
                    God doesn't want more selfish
                        people in the religious life
they give their lives for the
                        children of the Church.

Shepherds of Christ — help to nurture the
                    children of the Church

Jesus wants to renew religious life

                Religious orders are based on
                        obedience
                        celibacy
love for the people of the Church
                        love for Jesus
Jesus is the spouse of the religious
The vocation is married to Jesus
The children - children of the Church
members of the body of Christ

Satan tries to get people focused on themselves

                Read the Blue Books

Beautiful world God gives us —
Jesus wants us to be loving —

Jesus wants us to help people
heal — by knowing His love —
                    By going to the sacraments

                Jesus wants us other focused
                Jesus wants families of love

                Satan has attacked the family
                    drugs
                    divorce

                Satan wants wounded, weak
                    people

                People that are wounded hurt
others — they act more and more
                    imperfectly unless they seek
                    to be healed by Jesus

Love and forgiveness helps others heal

                Single, religious cannot be selfish

Look at a mother, father of children —
                    they get up, sacrifice

Religious in the Church cannot be
limited by their own world —
                    they must see their vocation
is to love the family of God —
                    the children of the Church

Religious must seek to be other focused

Living in communities help them grow
out of imperfections of relating to help
lead the body of Christ to greater
                    oneness

                Selfishness is not like Jesus

Religious are to be focused on others

A Religious vocation is not being a
                    spinster — seeking your
                    own way

A Religious vocation is to give to
                    the Church our lives for
                    the children of the Church

                God wants these religious vocations
                    in the Church

In sunny weather — hot and humid —
                    we love God
                    Jesus is our focus

In cold weather we love Jesus

We don't change like a weather-
                    vane — we are solid

                    ROOTED IN GOD

                Sing:  Dwelling Place

Life is learning to love God
Life is learning to love one another
                Learning to love —
                Showing faces of love —
                Relationships —

                God wants our faces reflecting
                    love inside —
                    a smiling heart —
                    eyes of joy for knowing
                    His love

                Wounded people — very wounded
                    can be VERY CLOSED
                                VERY SELF-FOCUSED

                                Blame others for what is
                                    going on inside of them

Little children test the icy surface
of the earth — they learn to
love — they learn obedience —
                    they learn trust and hope
                    and joy

We are wounded in relationships —
We have cousins, sisters and brothers
in real life, in the members
of the body of Christ —
                    in our families,
                    Religious are to help unite
                        the members in the Church
                        through their love

                Little children are learning
The world, the television is teaching
                    them many times

                    "being out for one-self"
                    "competition"
                    "divorce"
                    "lust"
                    "luring clothing"
                    "focus on the body"
                    "selfishness"

                Children are confused

                Priests are dwindling
We need a strong Church —
                Spreading the Priestly Newsletter —
the voice of the Good Shepherd

                Love — not fear

The Blue Books are the Mighty -
                    Medicine

God gives us the beauty of the
                    earth —
                    we walk as wanderers until
                        we know Him

Jesus is the perfect Son of God
                The Sacred Heart is perfect

                Mary has the Immaculate Heart
                    for the poor banished
                    children of Adam and Eve

We may smile outside and cry
                    inside

Mary appeared to me crying out
                    about her children

                A wounded, prideful person keeps
                    wounding others

Genesis 1: 26-27

God said, 'Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild animals and all the creatures that creep along the ground.'

God created man in the image of himself,
in the image of God he created him,
male and female he created them.

Genesis Chapter 3

Now, the snake was the most subtle of all the wild animals that Yahweh God had made. It asked the woman, 'Did God really say you were not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?' The woman answered the snake, 'We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden. But of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, "You must not eat it, nor touch it, under pain of death." ' Then the snake said to the woman, 'No! You will not die! God knows in fact that the day you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good from evil.' The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and pleasing to the eye, and that it was enticing for the wisdom that it could give. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realised that they were naked. So they sewed fig-leaves together to make themselves loin-cloths.

The man and his wife heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. But Yahweh God called to the man. 'Where are you?' he asked. 'I heard the sound of you in the garden,' he replied. 'I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.' 'Who told you that you were naked?' he asked. 'Have you been eating from the tree I forbade you to eat?' The man replied, 'It was the woman you put with me; she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.' Then Yahweh God said to the woman, 'Why did you do that?' The woman replied, 'The snake tempted me and I ate.'

Then Yahweh God said to the snake, 'Because you have done this,

    Accursed be you
of all animals wild and tame!
On your belly you will go
and on dust you will feed
    as long as you live.
    I shall put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and hers;
    it will bruise your head
and you will strike its heel.'

    To the woman he said:

I shall give you intense pain
        in childbearing,
you will give birth to your children
        in pain.
Your yearning will be for your husband,
    and he will dominate you.

To the man he said, 'Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat,

Accursed be the soil because of you!
Painfully will you get your food from it
    as long as you live.
It will yield you brambles and thistles,
as you eat the produce of the land.
By the sweat of your face

    will you earn you food,
until you return to the ground,
as you were taken from it.
    For dust you are
and to dust you shall return.

The man named his wife 'Eve' because she was the mother of all those who live. Yahweh God made tunics of skins for the man and his wife and clothed them. Then Yahweh God said, 'Now that the man has become like one of us in knowing good from evil, he must not be allowed to reach out his hand and pick from the tree of life too, and eat and live for ever!' So Yahweh God expelled him from the garden of Eden, to till the soil from which he had been taken. He banished the man, and in front of the garden of Eden he posted the great winged creatures and the fiery flashing sword, to guard the way to the tree of life.

Revelation Chapter 12

Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, robed with the sun, standing on the moon, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant, and in labour, crying aloud in the pangs of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared in the sky: there was a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, and each of the seven heads crowned with a coronet. Its tail swept a third of the stars from the sky and hurled them to the ground, and the dragon stopped in front of the woman as she was at the point of giving birth, so that it could eat the child as soon as it was born. The woman was delivered of a boy, the son who was to rule all the nations with an iron scepter, and the child was taken straight up to God and to his throne, while the woman escaped into the desert, where God had prepared a place for her to be looked after for twelve hundred and sixty days.

And now war broke out in heaven, when Michael with his angels attacked the dragon. The dragon fought back with his angels, but they were defeated and driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the primeval serpent, known as the devil or Satan, who had led all the world astray, was hurled down to the earth and his angels were hurled down with him. Then I heard a voice shout from heaven, 'Salvation and power and empire for ever have been won by our God, and all authority for his Christ, now that the accuser, who accused our brothers day and night before our God, has been brought down. They have triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word to which they bore witness, because even in the face of death they did not cling to life. So let the heavens rejoice and all who live there; but for you, earth and sea, disaster is coming-- because the devil has gone down to you in a rage, knowing that he has little time left.'

As soon as the dragon found himself hurled down to the earth, he sprang in pursuit of the woman, the mother of the male child, but she was given a pair of the great eagle's wings to fly away from the serpent into the desert, to the place where she was to be looked after for a time, two times and half a time. So the serpent vomited water from his mouth, like a river, after the woman, to sweep her away in the current, but the earth came to her rescue; it opened its mouth and swallowed the river spewed from the dragon's mouth. Then the dragon was enraged with the woman and went away to make war on the rest of her children, who obey God's commandments and have in themselves the witness of Jesus.

Revelation 19: 1-10

After this I heard what seemed to be the great sound of a huge crowd in heaven, singing, ‘Alleluia! Salvation and glory and power to our God! He judges fairly, he punishes justly, and he has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her prostitution; he has avenged the blood of his servants which she shed.’ And again they sang, ‘Alleluia! The smoke of her will rise for ever and ever.’ Then the twenty–four elders and the four living creatures threw themselves down and worshipped God seated on his throne, and they cried, ‘Amen, Alleluia.’

Then a voice came from the throne; it said, ‘Praise our God, you servants of his and those who fear him, small and great alike.’ And I heard what seemed to be the voices of a huge crowd, like the sound of the ocean or the great roar of thunder, answering, ‘Alleluia! The reign of the Lord our God Almighty has begun; let us be glad and joyful and give glory to God, because this is the time for the marriage of the Lamb. His bride is ready, and she has been able to dress herself in dazzling white linen, because her linen is made of the good deeds of the saints.’ The angel said, ‘Write this, "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb," ’ and he added, ‘These words of God are true.’ Then I knelt at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, ‘Never do that: I am your fellow–servant and the fellow–servant of all your brothers who have in themselves the witness of Jesus. God alone you must worship.’ The witness of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

John 19: 25-27

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

The Birth of the Full Ministries
of the Shepherds of Christ

"I wish to share with you part of a message which Jesus gave us on October 13, 1994. The message tells us about the expansion of the Shepherds of Christ movement:

'My beloved priest-companion, today I come to you with another mission. I am asking you to establish Shepherds of Christ Ministries. At My request you have already begun the priestly newsletter, "Shepherds of Christ", and the prayer chapters, Shepherds of Christ Associates...

'I am giving you this message on this day, the 77th Anniversary of the Great Apparition at Fatima, because of the close connection between the Shepherds of Christ movement and the Fatima message. The Fatima message is centered in devotion to My Heart and My Mother's Heart, especially in consecration to Our Hearts. Shepherds of Christ Ministries is also centered in devotion to Our Hearts. I will use Shepherds of Christ Ministries as a great instrument in helping to bring about the triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the reign of My Sacred Heart. When this occurs, My Church and the world will be experiencing the great era of peace promised by My Mother at Fatima.

'Today, then, October 13, 1994, the 77th Anniversary of the Great Apparition at Fatima, marks the birth of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. I pour forth the great love of My Sacred Heart to all. I am Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock.'

"Jesus has told us that Shepherds of Christ Ministries includes: the priestly newsletter, Shepherds of Christ, Shepherds of Christ Associates prayer chapters, various publications, including books, whatever else Our Lord directs us to undertake.

"As members of Shepherds of Christ Associates, you are an extremely important part of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. You have given great joy to the Heart of Jesus by responding to His invitation to become members of Shepherds of Christ Associates. As He draws you closer to His Heart and to His Mother's Heart as Associates members, He will fill you with an ever-increasing experience of His love, peace, and joy."

Apostles of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus

My dear fellow Associate Members,

Jesus is calling special apostles to join a new division of the Shepherds of Christ Movement. Here is a message from Jesus given to Father Carter:

My beloved priest-companion, I am requesting that a new prayer movement be started under the direction of Shepherds of Christ Ministries. I am asking for volunteers who are willing to pray before the Blessed Sacrament for one hour, twice-weekly. Members of the Shepherds of Christ prayer chapters, as well as others, are to be invited to join this movement.

These apostles are to pray for the intentions I am giving you. For part of the hour they are to use the prayers of the Shepherds of Christ Associates Handbook. They may spend the rest of the hour as they so choose.

I will use this new prayer movement within My Shepherds of Christ Ministries in a powerful way to help in the renewal of My Church and the world. I will give great graces to those who join this movement. The name, Apostles of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, is to be given to this movement.

I am inviting My beloved Rita Ring to be coordinator for this activity.

I pour out the great love of My Sacred Heart to all. I am Jesus, Chief Shepherd of the flock.

This is indeed a special calling for us to unite in one heart with His Eucharistic Heart and pray for the following intentions:

  1. For the spread of the devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary culminating in the reign of the Sacred Heart and the triumph of the Immaculate Heart.

  2. For the Pope.

  3. For all bishops of the world.

  4. For all priests.

  5. For all sisters and brothers in the religious life.

  6. For all members of the Shepherds of Christ Movement, and for the spread of this movement to the world.

  7. For all members of the Catholic Church.

  8. For all members of the human family.

  9. For all souls in purgatory.

                Peace

                Love

                Joy

                Faith

                Hope and

                Charity

Hebrews 11: 1-40

Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of realities that are unseen. It is for their faith that our ancestors are acknowledged.

It is by faith that we understand that the ages were created by a word from God, so that from the invisible the visible world came to be.

It was because of his faith that Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain, and for that he was acknowledged as upright when God himself made acknowledgement of his offerings. Though he is dead, he still speaks by faith.

It was because of his faith that Enoch was taken up and did not experience death: he was no more, because God took him; because before his assumption he was acknowledged to have pleased God. Now it is impossible to please God without faith, since anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and rewards those who seek him.

It was through his faith that Noah, when he had been warned by God of something that had never been seen before, took care to build an ark to save his family. His faith was a judgement on the world, and he was able to claim the uprightness which comes from faith.

It was by faith that Abraham obeyed the call to set out for a country that was the inheritance given to him and his descendants, and that he set out without knowing where he was going. By faith he sojourned in the Promised Land as though it were not his, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. He looked forward to the well-founded city, designed and built by God.

It was equally by faith that Sarah, in spite of being past the age, was made able to conceive, because she believed that he who had made the promise was faithful to it.

Because of this, there came from one man, and one who already had the mark of death on him, descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore which cannot be counted.

All these died in faith, before receiving any of the things that had been promised, but they saw them in the far distance and welcomed them, recognising that they were only strangers and nomads on earth. People who use such terms about themselves make it quite plain that they are in search of a homeland. If they had meant the country they came from, they would have had the opportunity to return to it; but in fact they were longing for a better homeland, their heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, since he has founded the city for them.

It was by faith that Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He offered to sacrifice his only son even though he had yet to receive what had been promised, and he had been told: Isaac is the one through whom your name will be carried on. He was confident that God had the power even to raise the dead; and so, figuratively speaking, he was given back Isaac from the dead.

It was by faith that this same Isaac gave his blessing to Jacob and Esau for the still distant future. By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, bowed in reverence, as he leant on his staff. It was by faith that, when he was about to die, Joseph mentioned the Exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his own remains.

It was by faith that Moses, when he was born, was kept hidden by his parents for three months; because they saw that he was a fine child; they were not afraid of the royal edict. It was by faith that, when he was grown up, Moses refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter and chose to be ill-treated in company with God's people rather than to enjoy the transitory pleasures of sin. He considered that the humiliations offered to the Anointed were something more precious than all the treasures of Egypt, because he had his eyes fixed on the reward. It was by faith that he left Egypt without fear of the king's anger; he held to his purpose like someone who could see the Invisible. It was by faith that he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood to prevent the Destroyer from touching any of their first-born sons. It was by faith they crossed the Red Sea as easily as dry land, while the Egyptians, trying to do the same, were drowned.

It was through faith that the walls of Jericho fell down when the people had marched round them for seven days. It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute welcomed the spies and so was not killed with the unbelievers.

What more shall I say? There is not time for me to give an account of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, or of David, Samuel and the prophets. These were men who through faith conquered kingdoms, did what was upright and earned the promises. They could keep a lion's mouth shut, put out blazing fires and emerge unscathed from battle. They were weak people who were given strength to be brave in war and drive back foreign invaders. Some returned to their wives from the dead by resurrection; and others submitted to torture, refusing release so that they would rise again to a better life. Some had to bear being pilloried and flogged, or even chained up in prison. They were stoned, or sawn in half, or killed by the sword; they were homeless, and wore only the skins of sheep and goats; they were in want and hardship, and maltreated. They were too good for the world and they wandered in deserts and mountains and in caves and ravines. These all won acknowledgment through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised, since God had made provision for us to have something better, and they were not to reach perfection except with us.
