Ecclesiastes 11: 9 - 12: 8
Young man, enjoy yourself
while you are young,
make the most of the days of your youth,
follow the prompting and desire
of heart and eye,
but remember, God will call you
to account for everything.
Rid your heart of indignation,
keep your body clear of suffering,
though youth and the age of black hair
are both futile.Remember your Creator
while you are still young,
before the bad days come,
before the years come which,
you will say, give you no pleasure;
before the sun and the light grow dim
and the moon and stars,
before the clouds return after the rain;
the time when your watchmen
become shaky,
when strong men are bent double,
when the women, one by one,
quit grinding,
and, as they look out of the window,
find their sight growing dim.
When the street-door is kept shut,
when the sound of grinding fades away,
when the first cry of a bird wakes you up,
when all the singing has stopped;
when going uphill is an ordeal
and you are frightened
at every step you take--
yet the almond tree is in flower
and the grasshopper is weighed down
and the caper-bush loses its tang;
while you are on the way
to your everlasting home
and the mourners are assembling
in the street;
before the silver thread snaps,
or the golden bowl is cracked,
or the pitcher shattered at the fountain,
or the pulley broken at the well-head:
the dust returns to the earth
from which it came,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.Sheer futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.
The Priest said
Ecclesiastics praises the vitality of
youth —
the day will come when
youth will be gone —
but in their youth they can
destroy their life
here and also hereafter —
So they must be prudent —
Luke 9: 43-45
and everyone was awestruck by the greatness of God.
But while everyone was full of admiration for all he did, he said to his disciples, 'For your part, you must have these words constantly in mind: The Son of man is going to be delivered into the power of men.' But they did not understand what he said; it was hidden from them so that they should not see the meaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
In Gospel
Jesus makes second
prediction of death
They don't understand —
The Apostles thought the Messiah
would conquer all his
enemies and
they would have peace
from David —
They ignored the question
to Jesus —
Jesus tells us pay
attention to what I am
telling you —
I must suffer —
You will suffer —
Your attitude ought to be the Lord is
in this
Suffering is identified with
Jesus —
The Mystical body suffers
The Lord is with us
We were not created for eternal
happiness on earth,
but in heaven —
The Lord is not asking us to do
anything He didn't do
first
That God's Kingdom will be seen on
the earth —
To help us to build God's Kingdom
by living according to God's will
We pray dear God
Please help us —
We ask that Your Blood be spread on
us and all who touch us —
all donors and their families —
all Shepherds of Christ people and their families —
We pray for the Holy Spirit
We consecrate ourselves, the Church
and the world to the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart
We cast the devil into the fires
of hell — far away from us
Oh God please hear us
Oh God make us holy —
Oh God help our people to serve You
and to love You as You deserve
Oh Mary help us —
Please we pray —
Oh God help us
Holy Holy Holy
Sing: Holy Is His Name
Oh Jesus we love You

26th Sunday Ordinary Time
Disaster for those
so comfortable in Zion
and for those so confident
on the hill of Samaria,
the notables of this first of nations,
those to whom the House of Israel
has recourse!Lying on ivory beds
and sprawling on their divans,
they dine on lambs from the flock,
and stall-fattened veal;
they bawl to the sound of the lyre
and, like David,
they invent musical instruments;
they drink wine by the bowlful,
and lard themselves with the finest oils,
but for the ruin of Joseph
they care nothing.
That is why they will now go
into captivity,
heading the column of captives.
The sprawlers' revelry is over.
1 Timothy 6: 11-16
But, as someone dedicated to God, avoid all that. You must aim to be upright and religious, filled with faith and love, perseverance and gentleness.Fight the good fight of faith and win the eternal life to which you were called and for which you made your noble profession of faith before many witnesses. Now, before God, the source of all life, and before Jesus Christ, who witnessed to his noble profession of faith before Pontius Pilate, I charge you to do all that you have been told, with no faults or failures, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who at the due time will be revealed
by God, the blessed and only Ruler of all,
the King of kings and the Lord of lords,
who alone is immortal,
whose home is in inaccessible light,
whom no human being has seen
or is able to see:
to him be honour and everlasting power.
Amen.
Luke 16: 19-31
'There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feast magnificently every day. And at his gate there used to lie a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to fill himself with what fell from the rich man's table. Even dogs came and licked his sores. Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels into Abraham's embrace. The rich man also died and was buried.
'In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his embrace. So he cried out, "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames." Abraham said, "My son, remember that during your life you had your fill of good things, just as Lazarus his fill of bad. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony. But that is not all: between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, to prevent those who want to cross from our side to yours or from your side to ours."
'So he said, "Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father's house, since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to this place of torment too." Abraham said, "They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them." The rich man replied, "Ah no, father Abraham, but if someone comes to them from the dead, they will repent." Then Abraham said to him, "If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead."

INTRODUCTION: Last week’s first reading was from Amos and so is today’s. Last week his prophecy was aimed at materialism and the oppression of the poor in the northern kingdom of Israel. Today’s reading (Amos 6, 1a.4-7) seems directed to the people in the southern kingdom, “the complacent in Zion” (another name for Jerusalem). Perhaps this warning came after the Assyrians destroyed the northern kingdom which is called “Joseph” in today’s reading. The complacent in Jerusalem were living pampered, comfortable lives, paying no attention to the devastation of the north and not concerned that their own country was headed toward the same fate because of their social and moral depravity. Amos was a true prophet whose words to be true.
HOMILY: Two men were in a private plane and they crashed on an island in the South Pacific. They both survived and one of the survivors right away surveyed the island and returned to his buddy to tell him they were doomed. The island was uninhabited and he could find no food or water. His buddy said “Not to worry. I make $250,000 a week.” The man shook his friend and said “You don’t understand. We’re going to die. There’s no one around, no food, no water.” His buddy repeated: “Not to worry. I make $250,000 a week.” Once more he screamed at him saying: “Don’t you hear me. We’re going to die. There’s no food, no water, no one around.” His buddy said: “Don’t worry. I make $250,000 a week. I’m a Church going Christian and I tithe. My pastor will find us!”
Today’s gospel (Lk. 16, 19-31) always leaves me feeling guilty. I live a fairly comfortable life (I have a place to live, enough to eat, a bed to sleep in, I like to go out occasionally for a nice meal) and there are so many people like Lazarus out there. I try to give generously to charity, but the many people suffering all over the world is overwhelming. I’m sure many of you feel the same way. At the same time, I hate to be taken advantage of by phonies and that has happened more times than I would like to admit in the past 43 years. I just do what I can, knowing I can’t solve every problem. It’s good to be challenged by Jesus, however, because unless we’re challenged, we easily become complacent and self centered. That’s what happened to the people of Jerusalem at the time of Amos. That’s what happened to the rich man in today’s gospel.
Amos and Jesus are not saying a person will automatically be condemned because they are wealthy or will automatically be saved because they are poor. We will all be judged by the same law, the great commandment of love - love for God and love for others. I know people who are well off and at the same time they are very loving and generous, and I know people who are poor who are self-centered and egotistical. Having wealth is not necessarily a vice and being poor is not necessarily virtuous. The rich man in today’s gospel was condemned not because he was a bad man, cruel, violent or evil; he was condemned for a lack of love. For him Lazarus just didn’t exist. When the rich man wanted a favor from Lazarus in the next life, Abraham told him that there was a great chasm between the two of them. One commentator pointed out that the rich man was the one who created the chasm in the first place, holding Lazarus at arms length as if he wasn’t there. Even in the next life, the rich man treated Lazarus as his lackey, not even addressing him but asking Abraham to send him to bring water or to go to warn his brothers.
Probably no society in the history of this world has enjoyed comfort than we do in America today. Kings and emperors did not live as well as most middle class families in America. Comfort is not sinful. But it is distracting and can be dangerous in that it can make us turn our attention increasingly toward ourselves and help us to forget about our responsibility to help others.
Our readings today force us to consider our personal attitude toward the material blessings we enjoy. The essence of today’s readings is that no matter how hard we’ve worked or how talented we may be or how thrifty we’ve been, what we have is not just for our own self indulgence. We must share with others. The irony of this is that on the whole, those who have less of this world’s goods are more generous than those who have been blessed with more. I say this because statistics show that, in general, the more income a person has the less, percentage wise, they give to charity. That is really ironic.
Most often Jesus’ words are very comforting, but today’s readings may make us uncomfortable, especially if we need to be made more sensitive to the suffering of others. If Jesus makes us uncomfortable it’s to help us think about what God wants from us and if we are doing what he wants? Jesus wants only one thing, our salvation, and the only way that can happen is if we follow the way he has shown us.
If we keep remembering where our blessings come from, then we will be more likely to remember that they have not been given to us just to help us become selfish, self-centered people. Our great prayer of thanksgiving each week, which we call the Mass or the Eucharist, helps us to keep remembering where all our blessings come from.

Revelation 7: 2-4, 9-14
Then I saw another angel rising where the sun rises, carrying the seal of the living God; he called in a powerful voice to the four angels whose duty was to devastate land and sea, ‘Wait before you do any damage on land or at sea or to the trees, until we have put the seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.’ And I heard how many had been sealed: a hundred and forty–four thousand, out of all the tribes of Israel.
After that I saw that there was a huge number, impossible for anyone to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language; they were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands. They shouted in a loud voice, ‘Salvation to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ And all the angels who were standing in a circle round the throne, surrounding the elders and the four living creatures, prostrated themselves before the throne, and touched the ground with their foreheads, worshipping God with these words:
Amen. Praise and glory and wisdom,
thanksgiving and honour
and power and strength
to our God for ever and ever. Amen. One of the elders then spoke and asked me, ‘Who are these people, dressed in white robes, and where have they come from?’ I answered him, ‘You can tell me, sir.’ Then he said, ‘These are the people who have been through the great trial; they have washed their robes white again in the blood of the Lamb.
1 John 3: 1-3
You must see what great love
the Father has lavished on us
by letting us be called God’s children—
which is what we are!
The reason why the world
does not acknowledge us
is that it did not acknowledge him.
My dear friends,
we are already God’s children,
but what we shall be in the future
has not yet been revealed.
We are well aware that when he appears
we shall be like him,
because we shall see him as he really is.Whoever treasures this hope of him
purifies himself, to be as pure as he is.
Matthew 5: 1-12
Seeing the crowds, he went onto the mountain. And when he was seated his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:
How blessed are the poor in spirit:
the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
Blessed are the gentle:
they shall have the earth as inheritance.
Blessed are those who mourn:
they shall be comforted.
Blessed are those
who hunger and thirst for uprightness:
they shall have their fill.
Blessed are the merciful:
they shall have mercy shown them.
Blessed are the pure in heart:
they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers:
they shall be recognised
as children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted
in the cause of uprightness:
the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven; this is how they persecuted the prophets before you.

INTRODUCTION: Our first reading is from the book of Revelation. The section just preceding today’s passage described the end of the world. It described the sun becoming dark while the moon became red as blood and the great earthquake all over the earth. As people were trying to hide from all the terrible things that were happening, they asked the question “Who can survive?” Today’s reading answers the question: those who have followed Christ faithfully, even through tribulation and persecution. Lest we think that 144,000 people are the only ones to be saved, the passage goes on to describe a crowd of people so large that they could not be numbered. Actually, the number 144,000 is symbolic of completion or perfection.
HOMILY: When we walk into St. Boniface church, we are surrounded by saints. And I don't mean just the saints here at Mass today. There are many holy people in our parish. However, I am talking about saints like the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph, St. Rita, Sts. Martha and Mary with Jesus in the stained glass window, St. Teresa (aka, the Little Flower), all the apostles, St. John Vianney and St. Patrick in the back, St. Cecilia and St. Gregory the Great in the stained glass windows in the choir loft, St. Anthony, St. Boniface in the window. This is just a tiny sample of all the holy people the Church honors with the title "saint." There are thousands of others. My book of saints lists 7000. But who could count the number of holy people the Church has never honored as "saint?" That is that large crowd that the first reading tells us about, so large that no one could count them. There are many wonderful people I have known personally who are among them. And if the Church tried to honor all of them and assign them their own special feast day, it would take thousands of years to get through the list.
The Church today not only wants us to remember our relatives and friends who lived holy lives and who are now with God, but it also wants to remind us where we are headed if we live the way Jesus taught us to live. That is most important. If we read the lives of the saints we see that some were not always holy, but they realized they were doing wrong and they changed their ways. And we shouldn't wait until the last minute to change our ways either. I want to tell you an Irish story about a person who tried to wait until the last minute and it didn't work. His name was Jack. He was smart, and he was lazy. He loved to drink too much whiskey and he loved to gamble. He never did a good thing for anyone his whole life. One Halloween night while he was at a bar, the devil showed up and told him it was time for him to die and the devil was going to take him to hell. Jack wasn't ready to die. He was pretty smart so he tried to figure out how to trick the devil. He told the devil "if you had all the power people say you do, you could turn yourself into a gold coin, but I'll bet you can't do it." The devil, being very proud, said "I can be anything I want." And he turned himself into a gold coin. Jack grabbed the coin and held it tight. It happened that Jack had a scar in the palm of his hand shaped like a cross and the devil is powerless in the presence of a cross. When the devil asked him to let him go, Jack told him he would only if the devil would give him another year to live. The devil agreed, so Jack opened his hand and let the devil go. Jack decided he would change his life during that year, but he was too busy drinking and gambling that he never got around to it. The next Halloween the devil showed up again. This time Jack challenged the devil to a game of dice. He agreed to go with the devil if he lost and if he won, he would have another year of life. The devil couldn't pass up the offer. Jack, being an expert gambler, won the toss and the devil lost again. Again, Jack said he would straighten out his life, but giving up his bad habits was too much effort and by the next Halloween he was no better. This time he really died and he found himself before St. Peter at heaven's gates. The devil didn't show up this time. He was still in hell, angry that Jack had tricked him twice. But St. Peter wouldn't let Jack in. He said he didn't belong there. But when Jack went to hell, even the devil didn't want him there either, he was so angry with him. "Where can I go," cried Jack. "I can't see in the dark." The devil tossed a burning coal into a pumpkin and ordered him to wander forever with only a pumpkin to light his path. From that day on he has been named Jack o' the lantern.
It's a fanciful story, but there are similar stories in the gospels where Jesus is telling us in all truthfulness we never know when our life will be ended and we always have to be prepared. We ask the Lord today to help us realize our dignity as God's children which St. John tells us about in today's second reading. And we ask our Lord to help us live our lives in such a way that we realize the purpose for which we were made, to live as God's children for all eternity with God in heaven.

Prayer to St. Michael
"St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen."
Prayer from St. Ignatius
Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
To give and not to count the cost;
To fight and not to heed the wounds;
To toil and not to seek for rest;
To labor and not to ask for any reward,
Save that of knowing
that I am doing your will.
Healing Rosary
A rosary can be used to pray for healing. It is powerful to unite our prayers to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and pray through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of Clearwater.
In times of trouble, for special prayer, we can use our rosary and pray as follows.
A Rosary for Healing or for Someone with Cancer.
On one Hail Mary bead or as many as you desire, say:
May God heal through the intercession of Our Lady of Clearwater in union with the Mass and all the Masses being celebrated around the world.
Pray the Hail Mary or Hail Mary's then pray this after the Hail Mary.
May the cancer be uprooted and thrown into the sea.
We believe with all our hearts.
After the Glory Be — pray the following petition.
May be healed through the intercession of Our Lady of Clearwater if it be the holy will of God.

We need $13,000.00 for this work.
