Today's Readings
Nehemiah 2: 1-8
In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, since I was in charge of the wine, I took the wine and offered it to the king. Now, he had never seen me looking depressed before. So the king said to me, Why are you looking depressed? You are not sick! This must be a sadness of the heart. Thoroughly alarmed by this, I said to the king, May the king live for ever! How can I not look depressed when the city where the tombs of my ancestors are lies in ruins and its gates have been burnt down? The king then said to me, What would you like me to do? Praying to the God of heaven, I said to the king, If the king approves and your servant enjoys your favour, send me to Judah, to the city of the tombs of my ancestors, so that I can rebuild it. The kingwith the queen sitting beside himsaid, How long will your journey take, and when will you come back? Once I had given him a definite time, the king approved my mission.
I then said to the king, If the king approves, may I be given orders for the governors of Transeuphrates to let me pass through on my way to Judah? Also an order for Asaph, keeper of the kings forest, to supply me with timber for the beams of the gates of the citadel of the Temple, for the city walls and for the house which I am to occupy? These the king granted me because the kindly hand of my God was over me.
Psalm 137: 1-6
By the rivers of Babylon
we sat and wept
at the memory of Zion.
On the poplars there
we had hung up our harps. For there our gaolers had asked us
to sing them a song,
our captors to make merry,
Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How could we sing a song of Yahweh
on alien soil?If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand wither!May my tongue remain stuck to my palate
if I do not keep you in mind,
if I do not count Jerusalem
the greatest of my joys.
Luke 9: 57-62
As they travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, I will follow you wherever you go. Jesus answered, Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.
Another to whom he said, Follow me, replied, Let me go and bury my father first. But he answered, Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.
Another said, I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say goodbye to my people at home. Jesus said to him, Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.
R. The Kingdom of God is the
most important
We don't have a lot of
comfort in this work
A person wants to bury
his father
Jesus' mission is urgent
The Kingdom of God has more importance
even than honoring one's parents
There was lots of conflict then
among those who believed
in Christ and those who didn't.
On a plow it was hard if a
person looked back they
would have trouble looking
back and keeping oxen straight
So if we look back we can't put
Kingdom work first
Nehemiah was sent to rebuild
the walls of Jerusalem,
at least temporarily.
God's Kingdom takes sacrifice and
dedication it isn't
a puffy little job
The work of the Kingdom is a commitment
to do the will of God
It is saying yes
It is being committed
It is what is first in our lives
We can see a religious if their focus
isn't being married to Jesus,
they are unhappy
they can play games
create problems etc.
trying to fill that void they have chosen
and blaming whoever they can for their
misery of not putting Christ first
in their lives, but they are miserable,
searching
A person is to realize Jesus is the
bridegroom of our soul
Not endlessly search for meaning
in our lives and leave Him out
or make Him as a minor priority
in life
The Blue Books are letters of love
from Jesus, where by the Divine
Bridegroom woos the soul
tells the precious soul of His
love
With the upcoming Feast of St. Theresa
we contemplate her way of love
her dedication to Christ
her will so freely given to God
her life lived as a holy handmaid
of the Lord -
Love, Love, Love for God, the Divine Bridegroom
Putting God first
From The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius,
by Louis J. Puhl, S.J. p. 12
23. FIRST PRINCIPLE AND FOUNDATION
Man is created to praise, reverence and serve God
our Lord, and by this means to save his soul.
R. St. Ignatius suffered because of battle
and his suffering from battle drew
him to know the love of God
comes first
He went in a cave
We believe Mary gave him the spiritual exercises
The Spiritual Exercises mean we work out
spiritually. We practice asceticism. We control ourselves
and don't give into the temptations of the devil
we run a marathon for God We put
God and His will first We suffer and
sacrifice joyfully to serve Him
We become stronger as we choose
God's will by the grace God gives us
to live virtuously, prudently,
courageously and we don't give
into satan -
We are longing to be filled more and more
with His life
It is our free will to choose Life or
Death
Deuteronomy 30: 15-20
The two ways
Look, today I am offering you life and prosperity, death and disaster. If you obey the commandments of Yahweh your God, which I am laying down for you today, if you love Yahweh your God and follow his ways, if you keep his commandments, his laws and his customs, you will live and grow numerous, and Yahweh your God will bless you in the country which you are about to enter and make your own. But if your heart turns away, if you refuse to listen, if you let yourself be drawn into worshipping other gods and serving them, I tell you today, you will most certainly perish; you will not live for long in the country which you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. Today, I call heaven and earth to witness against you: I am offering you life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants may live, in the love of Yahweh your God, obeying his voice, holding fast to him; for in this your life consists, and on this depends the length of time that you stay in the country which Yahweh swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that he would give them.
Sing song: Choose Life
R. We live for God
We put the Kingdom of God first
The devil tells us to focus on ourselves
To put ourselves first
He tempts us to give into the 7 deadly
sins
pride, greed, envy, wrath, lust,
gluttony,
and sloth
When we act in jealousy and unloving ways
we oppose God's will and that makes
us miserable
When we listen to the devil he tells us to
blame others now in our lives for
our old anger we have given
into life-long and makes us miserable
Mortal sin makes us an enemy of God
Venial sin weakens us
Living virtuously helps strengthen us
against temptation
Virtues: faith, hope, love, prudence, fortitude
or courage, justice, temperance, humility,
obedience, and sociableness.
. . . But the greatest of these is love
Love
God is love
God wants our love
God wants us to love each other in
this way to help build and further
His Kingdom
Building the Kingdom, living our vocation,
like Mary is what we are to do
Not loving our vocation we are
in and feel called by God is
a paradox
How can that person be at peace
Doing God's will
Living by God's will helps us to be
happy
Opposing God's will leads to
misery
O Most Holy Heart of Jesus,
fill us with love
outpour Your abundant grace upon us
outpour Your grace to the priests, the
Church and the world
Oh God convert sinners
help the unbeliever,
help our families, our friends,
our donors all members of the
Shepherds of Christ
Oh God help those dying
Oh God help us at the hour of death
Oh God we pray for the souls in
purgatory and
Help all hearts to be consecrated to
the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and to
know their love
Oh Most Holy Heart of Jesus You are the
fountain of every blessing,
Oh Most Sacred Heart of Jesus I adore You,
Help me to be humble and patient
Oh Most Holy Heart of Jesus help me to be pure
and to love You so ardently to
want to never offend Your Precious
Heart with my sins
Oh God I give You myself, my heart
Help me to be obedient to Your will
Oh God help me to live in You and for You
Oh God protect me from danger
Oh God protect me in health of body
and soul
Oh God help me
Oh God make haste to help me
In indecision I pray to you oh Holy Spirit
that You enlighten me to do God's
will
For when indecision occurs the devil
is ready to counsel
So thus God I pray for the Holy Spirit to fill me
now
Sing: Glory Be
R. Oh God help me to be holy
Oh God wash me clean of my impurities,
remove the guilt I have stored up
because of my indignations and hasten
to forgive me from my sins
I am a sinner Lord, but I seek to
serve You with a pure and generous
heart hasten to help me
I am panting in love to serve you and give
You homage and love
Oh God have mercy on me a sinner
help me to put You first
help me to put aside any wickedness
in heart and to live purely and in truth
Wash me Lord
Let me not be separated in any
way from You
Let me walk a straight path
to You
Let nothing separate me from
the Love of God
Sing: Glory Be
Psalm 77
I cry to God in distress,
I cry to God and he hears me.In the day of my distress I sought the Lord;
all night I tirelessly stretched out my hands,
my heart refused to be consoled.
I sigh as I think of God,
my spirit faints away as I ponder on him. PauseYou kept me from closing my eyes,
I was too distraught to speak;
I thought of former times,
years long past I recalled;
through the night I ponder in my heart,
as I reflect, my spirit asks this question:Is the Lord's rejection final?
Will he never show favour again?
Is his faithful love gone for ever?
Has his Word come to an end for all time?
Does God forget to show mercy?
In anger does he shut off his tenderness? PauseAnd I said, 'This is what wounds me,
the right hand of the Most High has lost its strength.'
Remembering Yahweh's great deeds,
remembering your wonders in the past,
I reflect on all that you did,
I ponder all your great deeds.God, your ways are holy!
What god is as great as our God?
You are the God who does marvellous deeds,
brought nations to acknowledge your power,
with your own arm redeeming your people,
the children of Jacob and Joseph. PauseWhen the waters saw you, God,
when the waters saw you they writhed in anguish,
the very depths shook with fear.
The clouds pelted down water,
the sky thundered,
your arrows shot back and forth. The rolling of your thunder was heard,
your lightning-flashes lit up the world,
the earth shuddered and shook.
Your way led over the sea,
your path over the countless waters,
and none could trace your footsteps. You guided your people like a flock
by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
R. Oh God I run to Thee
I long to serve You
I seek Your will
Oh God shower me with Your grace
Oh God I pray for the Church
Guide the Church
Oh God outpour Your grace
Oh God give us joy
Oh God help us to be humble
1 Samuel 2: 1-10
Hannah then prayed as follows:
My heart exults in Yahweh,
in my God is my strength lifted up,
my mouth derides my foes,
for I rejoice in your deliverance. There is no Holy One like Yahweh,
(indeed, there is none but you)
no Rock like our God.Do not keep talking so proudly,
let no arrogance come from your mouth,
for Yahweh is a wise God,
his to weigh up deeds. The bow of the mighty has been broken
but those who were tottering
are now braced with strength.
The full fed
are hiring themselves out for bread
but the hungry need labour no more;
the barren woman bears sevenfold
but the mother of many is left desolate.Yahweh gives death and life,
brings down to Sheol and draws up;
Yahweh makes poor and rich,
he humbles and also exalts. He raises the poor from the dust,
he lifts the needy from the dunghill
to give them a place with princes,
to assign them a seat of honour;
for to Yahweh belong the pillars
of the earth,
on these he has poised the world. He safeguards the steps of his faithful
but the wicked vanish in darkness
(for human strength can win no victories).
Yahweh, his enemies are shattered,
the Most High thunders in the heavens.Yahweh judges the ends of the earth,
he endows his king with power,
he raises up the strength of his Anointed.
Sing: Glory Be
R. Oh God give us joy
Oh God help us to be humble
Oh God You are our King
we adore You.

Guiding Light - Steadfast to the Son
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle A of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light homily series - Steadfast to the Son - Cycle A — The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15
Guiding Light - Feed My Soul
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle C of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light - Feed My Soul - Cycle C — In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15
Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 10.00 plus postageGuiding Light - Focusing on the Word - Cycle B — At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15
Guiding Light - The Word Alive in Our Hearts
Inspiring Homilies covering partial year of Cycle A by Fr. Joe Robinson
$ 5.00 plus postageGuiding Light - The Word Alive in Our Hearts. - Cycle A (partial) — Homilies by the Reverend Joe Robinson given at St. Boniface Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.
