 Prayer for Grace for our Country

Dear Father united to Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacrifice of Calvary sacramentally made present, celebrated around the world, in the Holy Spirit. We offer up all we do united to the Mass. We unite in one mind and one heart as members of the mystical body of Christ, with Christ our head in the pure and holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary, through the powerful intercession of Mary with all the angels and saints and souls in purgatory, and we beg for the saving grace, for our country, the United States. Please help us. We further pray for unity to always do the will of God in love. We spread the Blood of Jesus on the leaders and people of the United States and cast the devil into hell. We consecrate our country to the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart and all our dioceses, and beg for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. God help us. We pray for our families, the priests, the Church and the world. In the Name of Jesus please hear us, we pray. We pray for our president and leaders. We pray that we are united as one nation under God to work together in love as God wants.

                Baptism of Jesus

Baptism of the Lord

January 10, 2016

INTRODUCTION – (Isaiah 42, 1-4, 6-7; Acts 10, 34-38; Luke 3, 15-16, 21-22) Surely there were many people who pleased God greatly during the Old Testament period, people such as Abraham, Moses, the prophets. In the book of the prophet Isaiah, however, God speaks of someone as his servant with whom he is especially well-pleased. God does not identify this servant, yet it takes four lengthy passages, known as the servant songs, to describe the faithful and excellent service of this servant of God. One wonders whether the four passages refer to someone who was alive at the time of the prophet, but what is amazing is that, although they were written 500 years before Jesus was born, they describe Jesus perfectly. Today’s first reading is part of the first servant song. It has been chosen as today’s first reading because we hear echoes of it at Jesus’ baptism as God voices his approval of Jesus, saying to him: “you are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

HOMILY – Although the day after Christmas is the end of the Christmas season for many people, the Church’s liturgical year extends the Christmas-Epiphany season to the Baptism of our Lord. Thus our crib is still in church. Here is the connection between the Christmas crib and the feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. Remember “epiphany” means appearance or manifestation. Last Sunday we celebrated God manifesting his Son to the Gentiles, that is, to all nations by the visit of the magi. Today we celebrate God manifesting Jesus to us as his beloved Son at his baptism and at the beginning of his public ministry. Some people think that baptism originated with John the Baptist, but we now know that baptism was practiced before John’s time by the Essenes who are believed to be responsible for creating and preserving the Dead Sea scrolls. When John baptized a person in the river, in a symbolic sense he was asking them to clean up their act, that is, to repent their sins, to prepare themselves to meet their Messiah and Savior. John’s baptism was a symbol of repentance and a commitment to follow God’s laws so that they might share in God’s kingdom which would soon be revealed by Jesus. When Jesus came to be baptized, it was not an expression of repentance on his part because Jesus was without sin. Rather Jesus’ baptism expressed his perfect union with a sinful humanity (he was human in every way except sin as St. Paul tells us) and his baptism expressed his support and solidarity with the message of John the Baptist. God himself used the occasion to reveal the divinity of Christ upon whom God’s Spirit came to rest.

    John’s baptism was only a symbol. It did nothing to make a person change. Jesus, however, gave us a baptism that is a great deal more than a symbol; it is a sacrament and it has the power to truly make us clean and to fill us with new life. When we are baptized we are truly born again, we are freed of all sin, and we actually become God’s children because we share his life. Every Our Father we say reminds us of this - we have been made children of God. Every time we bless ourselves with holy water as we enter church, we are reminded that we have been cleansed of our sins and the life giving water that comes from the Spirit has been poured into our hearts. I think Jesus’ baptism was also meant to teach us by example how important baptism is for us - for through it eternal life is opened up to us. The importance of baptism is stressed also in a conversation Jesus had with the Pharisee, Nicodemus, when he said: “unless a person be born again (or born from above) he or she cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven.”

    We cannot conclude without stressing one last meaning Jesus’ baptism has for us. The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist was at the beginning of Jesus’ saving work. So in baptism we are called to participate in Jesus’ work of salvation in whatever way we can and to the extent that our talents allow us. Certainly this participation includes prayer for ourselves and for others. It surely means being a loving spouse, parent, grandparent, sibling or friend. It may mean anything from being alert to doing simple acts of kindness to dedicating our whole lives to helping others. Only we can sense what God is calling us to do as his sons and daughters. Just remember, when we were baptized, God said to each of us: “you are my beloved son or daughter; with you I am well pleased.” May we live up to the dignity that Jesus allows us to share with him. Amen.

                Marriage at Cana

John 2: 1-12

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited. And they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the feast had all been used, and the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ Jesus said, ‘Woman, what do you want from me? My hour has not come yet.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water,’ and they filled them to the brim. Then he said to them, ‘Draw some out now and take it to the president of the feast.’ They did this; the president tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew—the president of the feast called the bridegroom and said, ‘Everyone serves good wine first and the worse wine when the guests are well wined; but you have kept the best wine till now.’

    This was the first of Jesus’ signs: it was at Cana in Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, but they stayed there only a few days.

7th Sunday of Ordinary Time

February 18, 2001

INTRODUCTION – Our first reading goes back 1000 years before Christ. David who was a simple shepherd, had entered battle with the great warrior Goliath, the champion of the Philistines who were the enemies of Israel. He killed Goliath with a shepherd’s sling and this brought David instant popularity. Saul, Israel's king at that time, went crazy with jealousy because of David's popularity and saw him as a threat to his throne. Several times Saul tried to kill David. In today's reading Saul is hunting down David. In those days people lived by the law of retaliation, or getting even: "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." This was a law that was meant to limit the amount of revenge a person was allowed to take on someone who  injured them. In other words, if someone knocked out one of your teeth, you weren't allowed to knock out any more than one of theirs. Since Saul was out to kill David, David would have been entitled to retaliate and get Saul first. David sensed a higher law of respect for God's anointed and chose not to harm the king. This reading prepares us for the gospel where Jesus calls us to live by a higher law, the law of love and forgiveness. In our reading from Paul's letter to the Corinthians, we are still in the section of his letter that deals with the resurrection. Paul is telling the Corinthians that the resurrection will bring about a transformation of our body as it is right now. Our risen body will be similar to Christ's risen body.

HOMILY – Today's reading is a good examination of conscience for how we treat people, not how we treat the people we like, but the people we don't like and the people who don't like us. Jesus' law stretches us to a point that almost seems irrational: "do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who maltreat you, turn your cheek, give to all who beg and expect no repayment (obviously he didn't get dozens of charitable appeals in the mail.) Is it irrational? No. It's beyond logic and reason. The love that he calls for from us is a love like God's own love. There is a lot of logic in what Jesus says: If we're just like everyone else, liking people who like us and hating people who hate us, what's so praiseworthy about that? Anybody can do that. Shouldn't following him make us different, different in the sense of being better? He wants us to help bring his light to the world. Unfortunately today, not enough Christians are helping to bring Christ's light to the world, rather they are letting the world give them direction as to their morals and values. That's because it's not easy to live the way Jesus wants us to.

    How literally do we have to take what he says? Turn the other cheek? Perhaps exaggerated. When Jesus was struck on the face, he didn't turn the other cheek, rather he asked "why did you strike me." He stood up for himself, but he didn't retaliate and hit back, and that's the point. We don't have to become a doormat to be a good Christian, but we cannot fight violence with violence. If we do, rather than being an agent of love, we're just adding to the amount of violence in this world.

    Pray for those who persecute you. I think this is one of the most helpful lines in the gospels. 1 pray for people who cut me off on the expressway. I feel they probably need the prayer, and it keeps me from getting angry. A few years ago when my brother-in-law suddenly, without warning, walked out on my sister and their family, I felt a lot of anger. But I started praying for him. We haven't heard from him since, so I don't know if the prayers are helping him, but they helped me to get over all my anger.

    Jesus said "do to others as you would have them do to you." The golden rule. But it has to be understood correctly. For example, if I love wine and decide I'm giving all my friends wine for Christmas (because that's what I would like my friends to do for me) and a couple of my friends are alcoholic, I'm not doing them a favor. If a man would like his wife to wake him up at night whenever she feel's romantic, he can't presume he should wake her up for the same reason. If I am an extrovert and like to have someone to talk with when I'm troubled, I can't presume that my friend who is an introvert wants company when he or she is troubled. My friend may need time alone. In other words, our Lord is saying "don't stay trapped in your own little world. Get out of yourself." Doing for others as you would have them do for you means being able to recognize and meet their needs, and not presume they are just like you. That's a common problem in all relationships - that people think the other person should think and feel and know just as they think and feel and know. This is connected with what Jesus tells us when he says "stop judging." We don't know a person's heart. Only God knows that. That doesn't mean we have to like everything a person does. We can judge another's behavior. Parents have to judge their children's behavior and teach them correctly. If they don't they're not very good parents. Supervisors have to judge the behavior of those they supervise. If someone is crude, impolite, a pain you-know-where, it's alright to say they are a pain you-know-where. But we don't know why they're that way. And unless they are doing harm to us or to someone else, we may just have to put up with that pain and pray for them.

    Do we have to just let people take advantage of us? Is this what being a Christian means? Not really. It means living in the faith that whatever good we do will come back to us. "The measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.” It is with God's own love that we are to love. And how can we love with God's love? Only with God's help. And that's why we're here today, because the Eucharist is the greatest prayer we have and offers us the greatest help there is.

               Kingdom of God

                Sing: Seek Ye First

Christ the King

November 20, 2016

INTRODUCTION – (2 Samuel 5,1-3; Colossians 1,12-20; Luke 23,35-43) To better understand our readings, we have to begin when the Jews arrived at the Promised Land. After Moses died, God chose others who would lead his people in the ways of righteousness. These leaders, such as, Joshua, Samson, Deborah, Gideon and Samuel, were called Judges. When the Hebrews observed that neighboring nations were ruled by kings, they thought if they had a king they would be more powerful. God then gave them permission to have a king to lead them, the first king being King Saul. When Saul was killed in battle, the kingdom became divided into two parts, a northern and a southern part. David ruled in the south; King Saul’s son, Ishbaal, ruled in the north. Ishbaal proved to be incapable of leading, so after a few years, the northern tribes turned to David and asked him to rule them also. This is where our first reading comes in. David was a brilliant and far-sighted military and political leader. David was able to conquer his enemies on all sides. In spite of serious moral misbehavior, for which he repented, the Jews always hoped for another king with David’s talents and capabilities. Many kings came to the throne in the years following David, but none could match David’s capabilities. Solomon, David’s son and successor, bankrupted the nation. When he died, the northern part of Israel rebelled and established their own kingdom. It lasted a couple of hundred years and then it was destroyed by the Assyrians in 722 BC. The southern kingdom lasted twice that long and, for over 400 years, one of David’s descendants was king. In 587 BC the Babylonians invaded and destroyed the south and killed the Hebrews who they did not take into exile. The Babylonians ruled for another 50 years until the Persians defeated them. The Persians allowed the Jews still living in Babylon to return to Israel. But the Jews remained subjects of the Persians, who were eventually overcome by the Greeks, who were eventually overcome by the Romans. The kingship never returned to the Jews, but their longing for their own king remained strong through many centuries, even up to the time of WW II. Today we honor Jesus as the one God sent who would rule, not only the Jews, but who would rule the entire world. He would not be like other earthly kings, but he would rule eternally - guiding God’s people by his spiritual presence until the day he comes again in glory.

HOMILY – Today is the feast of Christ the King. In spite of the fact that our country operates as a democracy and not a monarchy and that our ancestors fought to get free from being under the rule of a king, we need to remember that there is One who remains supreme over all of us, one who will always rule over us, our God. He does not rule with guns or ships or planes or bombs; he rules with love. His authority comes from the fact that he is the creator of all things. If he had not given us life, there would be no life. Our God, who is supreme, is not like any other ruler, power or king – even though we call him a king. The proof that he is entirely different is revealed to us in today’s gospel. There we heard about Jesus who, having been tortured and stripped and nailed to a cross, had a sign above his head identifying who he is: Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews. It doesn’t say he had been the king of the Jews; it doesn’t say he called himself the king of the Jews. It just says he is the king of the Jews. This had been publicly and officially proclaimed by no lesser person than the chief officer and representative of the powerful Roman Empire. No one would dare contradict Pontius Pilate, the governor of that province.

    Our first reading today tells us how the northern kingdom of Israel chose David as their king 1,000 years before Christ. This is significant because God promised David through his prophet Nathan that one of David’s descendants would always be king of the Jews. The Babylonians put an end to that after 400 years as I said in my introduction, but it was only temporary because now again the Jews (and the rest of us too) are ruled by a descendant of David, Jesus, Son of David, and we will be under his rule forever. The sign says it all: Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews - king of all people.

    He is a unique king, not concerned with grabbing power for himself but concerned about using his power to help and heal people, to teach and feed people, to save people from the power of evil and show them how to live in a way that pleases God. His forgiveness of the good thief (this day you will be with me in paradise) shows us the kind of king we have. Today we honor Jesus as our Lord and King, and we ask that we may be a part of his heavenly kingdom forever. Amen.

                Transfiguration

Second Sunday of Lent

February 21, 2016

HOMILY – The account of the transfiguration in Luke’s gospel begins with chapter nine, verse 28. I want to begin my homily with verse 22, just six verses earlier. In verse 22 Jesus speaks, for the first time, of his suffering, death and resurrection. Then Jesus warns his apostles that their life as his followers will be very challenging. Luke tells us that about eight days after these warnings, Jesus took Peter, James and John up a mountain to pray. I want everyone to notice that the transfiguration is so closely tied in with Jesus’ prediction of his passion and death.

    How often do we hear a time reference between two events? Hardly ever. So this is important to mention – that Jesus’ transfiguration happened just a few days after he warned the apostles that he would suffer greatly at the hands of the Jewish leaders. On a very mundane level, this time sequence describes our own lives, sometimes things are going well, sometimes life is really the pits. That pattern repeats itself day after day, month after month, year after year our whole lifetime. With Jesus, however, it ends on a positive note. For Jesus, all his suffering and rejection ended with his rising from death to eternal life and his ascension to the right hand of the Father in heaven. Our own lives are not nearly so dramatic, but the pain and the glory are just as real. We have to keep remembering that with Jesus it will end in glory.

    When it seems that our life is all pain and misery, we just need to keep God’s promises in mind. We heard the story of Abraham to whom God promised much land and many descendants, but the promise never seemed to happen. Yet it did. All Abraham had to do was to have faith, a faith that really challenged him. In the second reading, Paul assures us that our citizenship is in heaven – our life in this world is brief and we are just tourists here. Our true home, our native country is heaven, and we will be transformed into a glorified body like Jesus’ own risen body and enjoy forever the home that God is creating for us in heaven.

    Along with this theme, the sufferings of this life will be transformed into glory just as Jesus’ sufferings would be transformed into glory. His transfiguration was meant to show this to his three disciples who went up the mountain with him. Luke is the only gospel who tells us what Jesus was talking about as he spoke with Moses and Elijah. He was talking about his exodus – his passage from this world to the next. Jesus is talking with us today about our passage from this world to the next. He wants us to trust him. He has great plans for us. He wants us to know God is faithful to his promises; God does not lie.

    Jesus said in John’s gospel, “I came that they might have life and might have it fully.” (Jn. 10,10) God does not lie. God is faithful to his promises. We have to see that especially in the sacraments: in baptism we are born from above, we are called God’s children and indeed that is what we really are. (I Jn, 3,1) In the sacrament of reconciliation, Jesus tells us through the words of the priest: “I absolve you from your sins.” In the Eucharist he tells us “This is my body. This is the cup of my blood which will be shed for the forgiveness of sins.” God does not lie; God is faithful to his promises.

    Lately, what I have been reading about near death experiences helps me understand more concretely what Jesus has promised. Not everyone has a near death experience and not everyone has a good one, but those who do have a good one report on the sounds, the colors, the friends and relatives they meet, the light that casts out everything that is dark in us and most of all, the desire not to return to this life. It reminds me of  Peter who wanted to stay on top of the mountain permanently – the experience of Jesus’ glory that he had was so awesome. I’m not an expert on near death experiences, but when people report a good experience, it gives me an idea of all the blessings that God has promised to us when we love him and serve him. God is faithful to his promises; and God does not lie.

                Institution of the Eucharist

                Song: I Love You Jesus

Picture of the Sacred Heart of JesusI Love You

 April 13, 1994

 Words of Jesus. Read before the Tabernacle.

Jesus:  How, child, do I, Jesus, tell you I love you? You hold on to silly things when God is in your midst and is ardently loving you. I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I am writing to each precious child this day. I am on fire for love of you. I remain in the Eucharist to be with you with My ardent love. I did not want to leave My beloved ones at the Last Supper. I love you so, My dear and ardently loved children. I remain with you this day in the Blessed Sacrament, the same Jesus Who died a brutal death on the Cross.

    Do you know I am truly present there? Do you know that God waits every day for you in the tabernacle? Do you comprehend even a minute amount of My love? You will never know of how I love you on earth.

    I, Jesus, truly the Son of God, came to earth a man and suffered a brutal death for love of you. I love you so much! I remain with you this day. I long for your love. I want you to come and be with Me in front of the tabernacle. I wait, I yearn for you to come and whisper your love to Me. I am a person and I love you this day, with such an ardent on-fire love! No human could ever compare a speck to My love for you.

    I wait, little ones, in the tabernacle. I wait for you to come and receive Me in Communion. I want you to want Me so much you cannot wait to come and receive Me. I want to be the love, the center of your life!

    I am Jesus. I am the Son of God. I am writing to you this day. I want to possess your very soul and live in you. I have all you need, sweet ones. Oh, you are so blind! I long for your union with Me. I wrote the book of love. I instituted it, yet you go to the world for your love and do not even come to Me! Oh, I love you, little ones. Little ones, beloved of the Father, loved by the Holy Spirit, mothered by My very own mother! What more can I say? The rest is up to you!

    I give you your will with such love and I want your love freely given. I am God. What do you think you could ever need that I do not give you? I am the Savior of this world. I am Jesus, the Son of God. I am waiting for you. I am longing for you. I am yearning for you. I am God. I have all you ever will need!

    Surrender this life to Me. Pray My Prayer for Union with Me. I want to possess your soul and operate from your very being. I am Jesus. I am the Son of God. I am the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I am Who am. I died and rose on the third day.

    Harken to My call, harken to My pleading. Spend your days in love with Me. Nothing matters unless it is rooted in Me and rooted in My love. I am the Son of God. I am the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I love you with the tenderest love. I am waiting this day for just you, My beloved one. Come to Me for I am the tenderest of all hearts. I am the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Guiding Light - Reflect on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light homily series - Reflect on the Word - Cycle B —  The Word leaves an impression on our souls. In my thoughts and reflections are born a more tangible understanding of these eternal concepts presented in the Gospels and the readings. Anyone can read a sentence, but not anyone can absorb it's true meaning. Truth, in this day and age, is almost a matter of opinion or individual entitlement. We believe that Christ's truth is our Roman Catholic Church. We, as priests, champion it's teachings; we are ambassadors for the Pope and Christ to those faces looking at us. We are the light by which our congregation reads to reflect upon real truth and we do it hand in hand. $15

Guiding Light - Steadfast to the Son
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle A of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light homily series - Steadfast to the Son - Cycle A — The sunflower is a great example of how we should be steadfastly guided by light. What a powerful thought that this exceptional plant is not stuck in one pose day in and day out, yet adaptable and magnetized to the sun. We feel the same about our Son. Our heads turns to face Christ as each day presents its challenges to find light. We join together like plants in a field and soak up the Son through the pulpit. We are a warm circle of strength using the wind of our breath to carry our priests' words, Christ's words, to new rich soil. $15

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle C of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light - Feed My Soul - Cycle C — In a world rapidly advancing and encouraging personal gain, we are faced with modern problems. There is a challenge to find time in our busy schedules for Sunday Mass or a family meal. We are able to research, shop, bank and even work without hearing one human voice. It is no wonder that we may often feel disconnected and famished at our week's end. In Fr. Joe's third book of homilies from Cycle C, we are reminded of the charity that Christ intended us to show each other. We have a calling to turn the other cheek and be the Good Samaritan to others. We are rewarded with the Father's kingdom and love when we are not worthy. We are not left alone or hungry. $15

Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word
Inspiring Homilies Covering Cycle B of the Liturgical Year
$ 15.00 plus postage

Guiding Light - Focusing on the Word - Cycle B — At times we may feel that our path to Christ is a bit "out of focus". Like the disciples in the Book of Mark, this ordinary life clouds our vision of Christ's Divinity. We may doubt the practicality or possibility of applying His teachings and example to our modern life. Cycle B's homilies are a "guiding light" to help us realize Jesus' Messianic greatness and His promise of better things to come. $15

Priestly Newsletter 2000 Issue 1
Audio CD - Read by Father Edward J. Carter
$ 10.00  plus postage

Priestly Newsletter - 2000 #1 - CD. - Christ is Our Strength - Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. It is so beautiful. "This brief passage contains one of the greatest lessons of the spiritual life. As we progress along our spiritual journey, we become increasingly aware of how weak we are in our-selves, but how strong we are in Christ. To experience our weakness involves suffering. The degree and kind of suffering can vary. The suffering can include the experience of the classical dark night of the spirit as described by St. John of the Cross. One of the main purposes of the dark night is to make a person keenly aware of his or her helplessness without God." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10

Priestly Newsletter - 2000 #2 - CD. - Suffering: A Source of Life - Fr. Edward Carter, S.J. read it the year he died. Fr. Carter knew suffering that year. His voice is so powerful as he read each Newsletter from his heart and soul. "Every man has his own share in the redemption. Each one is also called to share in that suffering through which the redemption was accomplished. He is called to share in that suffering through which all human suffering has also been redeemed. In bringing about the redemption through suffering, Christ has also raised human suffering to the level of the redemption. Thus each man in his suffering can also become a sharer in the redemptive suffering of Christ–." quote by Fr. Carter from the newsletter $10
